When I was a kid, my mom set aside some breakfast food for supper every now and then. I remember one night after a long, hard day at work, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and a plate of extremely burnt biscuits on the table. I waited to see if my dad would get annoyed.
All my dad did was to reach for the biscuits, smile at my mom and ask me how my day at school had been. I don't remember what I told him that night but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!
When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then."
Later that night, I went to say good night to my daddy, and I wondered if he really liked his biscuits burnt. He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently, "Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!
As I have grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. We could extend this philosophy to any relationship, such as a husband-wife, parent-child, or friendship. Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket. Keep it in your own. So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burnt one will do just fine.

A. He set it aside for breakfast.
B. He ate butter and jelly instead.
C. He uttered his complaints loudly.
D. He ate it up as if nothing happened.
5. Which of the following words can best describe the author's dad?

6. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Show understanding to imperfect things.
B. Ask the children to respect their parents.
C. Enjoy the over-cooked biscuits willingly.
D. Make important decisions on your own.
7. In which section of a magazine may this passage appear?
A. History and culture. B. Family and relationship.
C. Cuisine and health. D. Entertainment and sports.
D 5. A 6. A 7. B

根据文章第二段最后一句话“... but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!”
根据第三段的“When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then.(那天晚上,当我从桌子上站起来的时候,我记得听到妈妈因为饼干烧焦而向爸爸道歉,我永远不会忘记他说的话:“亲爱的,我时不时喜欢烧焦的饼干。)”和第四段的“ He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently, "Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!(他把我搂在怀里,温柔地说:“你妈妈今天工作很辛苦,她真的很累。再说,一点烧焦的饼干也不会伤害任何人!)”可知,爸爸吃掉妈妈烤糊的饼干,丝毫不抱怨,反而感谢妈妈的付出并教育作者也要多体谅妈妈。由此推知,爸爸是一个体贴他人的人。故选A项。
根据最后一段二三句“Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.” 故选A项。
C
Global waming is the increase of the earth’ s average surface temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases, for example, carbon dioxide, which traps heat that would otherwise escape from the earth. After the trees are cut down and more greenhouse gases are released, the “blanket’around the earth called the ozone layer(臭氧层), will get thicker. This catches more heat and makes the earth hotter. Luckily, there are many things that every citizen of the earth can do to help reduce the effects of global warming, and it is never too late or too early for children to take action.
The children should learn what a carbon footprint is. A carbon footprint is the amount of carbonand greenhouse gases people make as they lead the daily life and go about the normal activities. In other words, the carbon footprint is a measure of the environmental impact(冲击)the life has. To live an environmentally friendly life that doesn’t contribute to global warming, people want to have the smallest carbon footprint possible.
Almost everything people do contributes to global warming and is related to fossil fuel consumption. These can be direct uses of fossil fuels, like riding in a gasoline-powered car, or indirect contributions to greenhouse gases, such as eating fruits or vegetables that have to be shipped from far away to reach their tables.
If a child wants to make a contribution to reducing global warming, he should ridc a bicycle tothe near park, school, his friend’s house, or anywhere else instead of taking the car. Or he may try to walk or jog, which is also helpful. In addition, although trains and buses often run on fossil fuels, on average, each person uses less energy and produces less polution to run. Next time if children with their parents have to get around town or it’s too far to walk or bike, take the bus or other public transportation instead of asking for a ride.
8. What is the main reason for global warming?
A. Too much greenhouse gases being released.
B. The ozone layer having caught more heat.
C. Too many trees having been cut down.
D The earth’s inner temperature having increased.
9. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Life has an impact on carbon footprint.
B. The definition of a carbon footprint.
C. People should live an environmental friendly life.
D. People make a huge amount of carbon and greenhouse gases.
10. For whom does the author want to write the passage?
A. Scientists. B. Parents.
C. Children educators. D. Adults.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What Can People Do to Use Less Energy?
B. Why Does Global Warming Affects Humans’ Life?
C. How Can Kids Help Reduce Global Warming?
D. How Does Carbon Footprints Measure Pollution?
A 9. B 10. C 11. C

Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone? If yes, you’re not alone. These days, many people suffer from the stress of FOMO (fear of missing out). They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and for the rest of the day, they constantly scroll down (向下滚动) the timelines of their social media apps to get the latest updates.
Despite the convenience smartphones bring, many people struggle with their digital habits. As Sameer Samat, US tech Company Google’s vice president of product management, said in his speech at the 2018 Google I/O developer conference on May 8th, 70 percent of people don’t want to spend so much time on their phones. This is why during the conference Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new version (版本) of its Android operating system. This new app includes well-being functions that aim to help users manage the time they spend on their digital devices.
It all starts with a bird’s-eye view. Dashboard allows users to look at all the details of their phone habits. For example, a user can see how many times they’ve unlocked their phone and how many times they’ve checked their social media apps, as well as how much time they spend on each app every day.
Once the users see this information, they’ll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to launch the app until the next day.
But even if users become more mindful of their usage, they’re still likely to be drawn in by notifications (通知). This is where the Shush feature comes in. It automatically (自动地) silences incoming calls and notifications when a user puts their phone face down.
If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours using their smart phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that. After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps when the easiest answer would be just to use your willpower?
12. Who are the target users of Dashboard?
A. People who know little about smartphones.
B People who have trouble dealing with stress.
C. People who are slow at searching for things online.
D. People who wish to manage the time they spend on their smartphone.
13. What can Dashboard do?
A. Lock the phone at a certain time. B. Limit some apps to certain users.
C. Limit the time certain apps can be used. D. Silence app notifications at night.
14. The underlined word “mindful” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. skillful. B. careful. C. trapped. D. creative.
15. What does the author think of Dashboard?
A. It’s not useful at all. B. It’s perfectly designed.
C. It should include more functions. D. It may be helpful to some people.
D 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据第四段第二句“With the App Timer function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to launch the app until the next day.(通过定时功能,用户可以设置每天使用每个应用程序的时间限制。当他们达到时间上限后,他们直到第二天才能启动该应用程序)”,由此可知,Dashboard能够限制用户在使用某些应用程序的时间,故选C项。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段最后一句“After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to launch the app until the next day.(当他们达到时间上限后,他们直到第二天才能启动该应用程序)”,以及划线词所在句“But even if users become more mindful of their usage, they’re still likely to be drawn in by notifications (通知).(但即使用户更mindful他们的使用,他们仍然可能被通知所吸引)”可知,用户会很留意自己的使用某些应用程序的时间,mindful意为“留心的”,与careful语意相近,故选B项。
根据最后一段“If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours using their smart phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that. After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps when the easiest answer would be just to use your willpower?(如果人们真的想充分利用他们的空闲时间,而不是浪费时间使用他们的智能手机,这些新功能只是其中一种方式。毕竟,当最简单的解决办法就是利用意志力时,谁还需要用一个应用程序来阻止你使用其他应用程序呢?)”可知,Dashboard的这个功能对于没有意志力的人来说应该是有帮助的。故选D项。
