REEs , especially heavy nes , are an essential part f many high-tech devices , frm the engines f electric cars and smartphnes , t LED lights. Mre than 90% f the glbal heavy REE demand is surced frm in-adsrptin depsits (离子吸附沉积物) , which frm within weathering crusts(硬壳). Hwever, "cnventinal mining applies vermuch usage f chemical agents t recver REEs frm these depsits, nt nly exhibiting lw efficiency but als plluting the envirnment.
Researchers frm the Chinese Academy f Sciences' Guangzhu Institute f Gechemistry prpsed a new apprach in the jurnal Nature Sustainability earlier this mnth, shwing that emplying electrkinetic mining techniques t extract(提取）REEs frm weathering crusts can be- bth cleagi and efficient. Using this apprach , researchers generated an electric field by putting electrdes (电极) n the tp and bttm f a vlume f sil. The electrkinetic effect can speed up the migratin f REEs, reducing the need fr harmful chemical agents.
T evaluate the practicality f the new _methd, they carried ut several experiments f different scales. Results suggested that the new methd utperfrmed traditinal mining techniques. Fr instance, the scaled-up experiments achieved a recvery efficiency f 96% within 67 hurs by using electrkinetic. Using the cnventinal technique, it was nly 62% at 130 hurs.
The difference between the impact f the ld and the new appraches was even mre significant in ann-site field test: Using electrkinetic can achieve a recvery efficiency higher than 90% , an 80% decrease in plluting agent usage and a 70 % reductin in impurity.
