The grup were willing t g with my idea, thugh they had questins: Wuld we cllect mney at the petry stand? N. What if there were n custmers? It's part f the risk. What if we had nthing t say n the tpic they gave us? Yu will, and Ill train yu.
A few times a day, whenever we had a little extra time in the writing studi, I asked my students t turn t a clean sheet f paper and I gave them an assumed petry-stand pem request. I tried t get the students int the habit f asking fr specifics and authenticity.
On Thursday mrning came the big day n Palmer Square. We set up the tables and chairs beside the place. The ft traffic t and fr was a sight that might have pleased Walt Whitman: peple f all ages and races. Peple shwed tentatively(试探性地) at the sign ffering free petry. A wman wheeling a strller became ur first custmer t have smene write fr her kid n the subject f candy. An Asian wman asked if the pets culd d haiku. A man tld us that he nly spke Spanish. S we brught Ricky, a Latin kid t take his rder and returned with a pem in Spanish. The man culdn’t cntain his smile.
By 4:30, when it was time t leave, custmers std in line, wanting t knw when we wuld be returning. I watched and their enthusiasm made me wnder abut the place f petry in the lives f rdinary American.

The latest pht taken at China’s well-knwn Tsinghua University became a hit, where a student was seen using his laptp while riding n a bike. The mral f the stry is that wasting time n things like cmmuting between university facilities becmes unacceptable, since the pressure t graduate tp f the class is s intense.
Int the real wrld, wrking extra hurs is a cmmn practice f China’s mst brilliant figures in technlgy. Infinite vertime, pre-mature balding(秃顶) and hspital admissins are all but part f standard prfessinal life fr the natin’s brightest. Similarly, blue-cllar wrkers dn’t have it easier. Fd delivery riders are reprtedly trapped by an algrithm(算法) that autmatically wrks ut the best delivery time fr app users, and never minds if the wrkers are at the risk f rad accidents.
Peple are wndering whether all this hard wrk really makes life better. Actually, it may well be making things harder fr everyne, but there desn’t seem t be a way ut. A ppular sense f being stuck in an ever s exhausting rat race where everyne lses has given rise t a new buzzwrd: neijuan(invlutin). The Chinese wrd, neijuan, is made up f the characters fr “in-side” and “rlling”, and is understd as smething that spirals in n itself, a prcess that traps participants wh knw they wn’t benefit frm it.
“Frm a scilgical pint f view, invlutin is unavidable because f sciety’s structural shifts,” said Yan Fei, a prfessr f scilgy at 'Tsinghua University, "One big questin fr the middle class is hw t remain in the middle class. Meanwhile, the lwer class still hpes t change their fate. But the middle and upper classes aren't s much lking upward , and they are marked by a deep fear f falling dwnward. Their greater fear is perhaps lsing what they already have,” he explained.
28. Why is the pht f a student in Tsinghua University mentined in Paragraph 1?
A. T clarify the writing purpse.
B. T present an argument.
C. T intrduce the tpic f the passage.
D. T describe a character.
29. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. It's cmmn t wrk vertime in the real wrld.
B. Neijuan reflects the fierce cmpetitin in China.
C. Fd delivery riders benefit a lt frm the apps.
D. Peple live a better life due t their great effrts.
30. What can be inferred frm what Yan Fei said in the last paragraph?
A. The lwer class suffers a deep fear f falling dwnward.
B. The middle class tries t be a member f the upper class.
C. The greatest fear f every class is t lse what they already have.
D. Invlutin is inescapable' in the develpment f sciety fr each class.
31. Frm which clumn f the newspaper can the passage be taken?
A. Sciety.
B. Ecnmy.
C. Entertainment.
D. Turism.

Mining rare-earth(稀土)elements ( REEs) has lng been cnsidered a dirty business , as it can lead t water and sil pllutin , but a new technlgy develped by Chinese scientists may change the trend, ffering a greener alternative fr the industry.
REEs , especially heavy nes , are an essential part f many high-tech devices , frm the engines f electric cars and smartphnes , t LED lights. Mre than 90% f the glbal heavy REE demand is surced frm in-adsrptin depsits (离子吸附沉积物) , which frm within weathering crusts(硬壳). Hwever, "cnventinal mining applies vermuch usage f chemical agents t recver REEs frm these depsits, nt nly exhibiting lw efficiency but als plluting the envirnment.
Researchers frm the Chinese Academy f Sciences' Guangzhu Institute f Gechemistry prpsed a new apprach in the jurnal Nature Sustainability earlier this mnth, shwing that emplying electrkinetic mining techniques t extract(提取)REEs frm weathering crusts can be- bth cleagi and efficient. Using this apprach , researchers generated an electric field by putting electrdes (电极) n the tp and bttm f a vlume f sil. The electrkinetic effect can speed up the migratin f REEs, reducing the need fr harmful chemical agents.
T evaluate the practicality f the new _methd, they carried ut several experiments f different scales. Results suggested that the new methd utperfrmed traditinal mining techniques. Fr instance, the scaled-up experiments achieved a recvery efficiency f 96% within 67 hurs by using electrkinetic. Using the cnventinal technique, it was nly 62% at 130 hurs.
The difference between the impact f the ld and the new appraches was even mre significant in ann-site field test: Using electrkinetic can achieve a recvery efficiency higher than 90% , an 80% decrease in plluting agent usage and a 70 % reductin in impurity.
The study cnfirmed that this nvel electrkinetic technlgy enabled green, efficient and selective recvery f REEs. Researchers als nted that the new methd has great ptential fr use in the mining f ther critical metals under cnditins in which the metals exist in inic states.
32. Why is the new technlgy referred t as a “greener alternative” fr REE mining?
A. It is based n cleaner energy.
B. It achieves a higher recvery efficiency.
C. It recvers REEs frm weathering crusts.
D. Lt depends less n the use f chemical agents.
33. Hw des the authr present the practicality f the new technlgy?
A. By analyzing causes.
B. By listing examples.
C. By prviding test results.
D. By giving instructins.
34. What can' we knw abut the new technlgy?
A. It cntributes t the extractin f purer REEs.
B. It causes REEs t be mined at a higher cst.
C. It is widely adpted in mining critical metals.
D. It frees REE mining f the impact n nature.
35. What is the text mainly abut?
A. A new technlgy with great ptential in mining metals.
B. A greener REE mining technlgy with higher efficiency.
C. The difficulties in mining REEs frm in-adsrptin depsits.
D. The differences between cnventinal and new REE mining methds.
