B 18. A 19. C 20. A
M: This is the local daily news. More than half of British airline pilots say they have fallen asleep during flight, a survey said yesterday. According to BALPA, the British Airline Pilots’ Association, 300 out of 500 pilots surveyed admitted being asleep during work. And one third of these sleeping pilots said that they had woken up to find their co-pilot also asleep. Pilot exhaustion became the headlines and aroused public concern this week when a newspaper reported two pilots on a British flight fell asleep, leaving the full plane traveling automatically in the air. The survey came before the European governments decide on the air rule changes. The rule changes would mean that pilots could work a total of 110 hours in a two-week period, more than the 95-hour limit under the current regulations and at night pilots could be expected to fly for up to 11 hours, against a current 10-hour limit. Many people are worried about the changes. Tiredness is already a major challenge for pilots who are deeply concerned that the new EU rules will increase levels of tiredness, which is believed to be the leading cause for air accidents, beating mechanical faults and natural threats such as storms or fogs.

If you are longing for a hike in Alaska and aren’t sure where to start, here are our favorites. There’s something for all levels of skills and ambitions.
The Kenai River Trail
A half mile down this trail are wonderful views of the Kenai River Canyon. There are really two trailheads (小道的起点); the main “upper” trail starts at mile 0.6 of Skilak Lake Rd, and the other at mile 2.3.
Turnagain Arm Trail
This 11-mile hike begins at Potter Trailhead (Mile 115). Initially used by Alaska Natives, the trail, can also be accessible to points along the way: McHugh Creek (Mile 112), Rainbow (Mile 108) and Windy (Mile 107).
Iditarod National Historic Trail
The National Historic Iditarod Trail is a 24-mile hike used by gold miners and sled-dog teams until 1918, when the Alaska Railroad was finished. It’s a two-to-three day hike through superb mountain scenery to Girdwood (where it’s known as the Crow Pass Trail), and is the region’s best backpack adventure.
Put up a tent at Echo Bend (Mile 3), or rent one of two yurts (毡房) ($65 per night) close by. For a shorter outing you can turn around at the Perch, then return to the Dew Mound Trail at Echo Bend and then to the Nature Center, making this a scenic 8-mile trip.
Reed Lakes Trail
Two alpine lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and towering granite (花岗岩) walls: the 7-to-9-mile Reed Lakes Trail is one of the most wonderful hikes in the region, and worth the climb. Once you reach upper Reed Lake, continue 1 mile to Bomber Glacier, where the ruin of a B-29 bomber lies in memorial to six men who died in a 1957 crash.
21. Which of the following was originally used by Alaska Natives?
A. The Kenai River Trail. B. Turnagain Arm Trail.
C. Iditarod National Historic Trail. D. Reed Lakes Trail.
22. At which place can hikers set up a tent?
A. Girdwood. B. Potter Trailhead. C. Echo Bend. D. Turnagain Arm.

9 days after he was born, Zig Ziglar stopped breathing. Sadly, the doctor laid the lifeless body on the bed and then his grandmother held his body close and began whispering in his ear. Surprisingly, he came back to life in her arms.
He was 5 when his father died and 2 days later, his baby sister died too. He was raised the 10th out of 12 children by his widowed (寡妇的) mother during The Great Depression. At 7 he was already helping to support his family by selling their vegetables and milk. When he was 20, he married a woman called Jean. In order to support his new family, he quit school and sold pots and pans.
Life as a salesman was unpredictable and so for years, the couple struggled financially. Sometimes he could only afford a few gallons of gas, so wherever his car rolled to a stop was where he would start working door-to-door. But he maintained a positive attitude about everything.
Refusing to accept defeat, he began travelling to churches, schools and clubs, sharing lessons about the power of positive thinking. When the company he worked for broke up, he turned to full-time motivational speaking, helping countless people achieve their dreams.
By 1975 he had written See you at the top a book of his most inspiring thoughts and stories. It was rejected by 30 different publishers before it was finally printed. It has now sold more than
2 million copies worldwide.
Zig Ziglar passed away in 2012, two days after celebrating his 66th wedding anniversary. In his 30 books that have been translated into more than 36 languages, his optimism and enthusiasm have impacted more than 250 million people around the world and continues to inspire more every day.

Scientists have figured out how COVID-19 causes many people to lose their sense of smell. And they have good news: The loss of their smell appears to be temporary because the actual cells in the nose that recognize smell aren’t harmed.
Temporary loss of smell is called anosmia by doctors. It’s one of the earliest and most commonly reported indicators of COVID-19. In fact, studies suggest it can better predict whether someone likely suffers from the disease than fever and cough.
But to be exact, why people with COVID-19 stop being able to smell was unclear. It was thought that damage or inflammation (炎症) of the sensory nerve cells that detect and send the sense of smell to the brain caused the problem. That turned out to be wrong.
In a paper published on Friday, researchers found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, attacks the cells that support those smell-detecting neurons (神经元) but not the neurons themselves.
“The novel coronavirus changes the sense of smell in patients not by directly infecting neurons but by affecting the function of those supporting cells,” said Sandeep Robert Datta, a professor at Harvard Medical School.
That’s good news because it means the infection isn’t likely to permanently damage COVID-19 patients’ smell nerves. “Once the infection disappears, smell neurons don’t appear to need to be replaced or rebuilt from scratch,” he said. “But we need more data and a better understanding of the hidden theory to confirm this conclusion.”
COVID-19 patients typically recover their sense of smell over the course of several weeks. In other infections caused by a virus patients can take months to regain their sense of smell.
28. Which can better predict the infection of COVID-19?
A. Loss of smell. B. Constant cough.
C. High fever. D. Temporary unconsciousness.
29. What is the new discovery published on Friday?
A. The novel coronavirus changes the sense of smell.
B. The virus that causes COVID-19 will kill smell nerves.
C. The virus of COVID-19 doesn’t attack those smell-detecting neurons.
D. The infection of COVID-19 permanently damages patients’ smell nerves.
30. Why does the author mention other virus infections in the last paragraph?
A. To share his or her relevant knowledge.
B. To prove shorter smell loss of COVID-19 patients.
C. To introduce the next hot topic about virus infection.
D. To conclude the bad results of different infections.
31. What of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Patients living with COVID-19 will soon recover
B. COVID-19 is easy to predict by several symptoms
C. Will COVID-19 destroy your nerve system?
D. Will COVID-19 patients’ smell loss last long?
A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第二段中的“Temporary loss of smell is called anosmia by doctors. It’s one of the earliest and most commonly reported indicators of COVID-19. In fact, studies suggest it can better predict whether someone likely suffers from the disease than fever and cough.”(嗅觉暂时丧失被医生称为嗅觉缺失。
根据第四段“In a paper published on Friday, researchers found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, attacks the cells that support those smell-detecting neurons (神经元) but not the neurons themselves.”(在上周五发表的一篇论文中,研究人员发现,SARS冠状病毒2型——引起2019冠状病毒疾病的病毒,攻击的是支持那些嗅觉神经元的细胞,而不是这些嗅觉神经元本身。)
根据最后一段“COVID-19 patients typically recover their sense of smell over the course of several weeks. In other infections caused by a virus patients can take months to regain their sense of smell.”(2019冠状病毒患者通常需要几周的时间才能恢复嗅觉。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Scientists have figured out how COVID-19 causes many people to lose their sense of smell. And they have good news: The loss of their smell appears to be temporary because the actual cells in the nose that recognize smell aren’t harmed.”(科学家们已经弄清楚了2019冠状病毒是如何导致许多人丧失嗅觉的。 所以D选项“Will COVID-19 patients’ smell loss last long?”(2019冠状病毒病人的嗅觉丧失会持续很久吗?)
D
Buying furniture is easier than ever. You can even order a new table and chairs online without ever leaving home. But did you ever think about how furniture is made? The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation, Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”
The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue (组织) — wood and fiber — in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown. While there is still a long way to go to actually grow a table, the team was able to grow structures from cells from zinnia leaves.
Making furniture and other items from biomaterials could eliminate cutting down trees in forests. “The way we get these materials hasn’t changed in centuries and is very inefficient,” said Velasquez-Garcia. “This is a real chance to avoid all that inefficiency.”
There are other benefits to using lab wood too. Lab grown wood can be handled to take on any shape — like 3 D printing — so it may be possible to build a table without glue or screwing parts together.
Beckwith, a mechanical engineering PhD student, was inspired by a visit to a farm to try to make land-use more efficient and environmentally sound. “That got me thinking: Can we be more strategic (战略上的) about what we’re getting out of our process? Can we get more yield for our inputs?” she told MIT News. “I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity.”
Today, the two largest uses of trees are to make wood products and paper. When new biomaterials become readily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be preserved for their environmental, health, and recreational value. These researchers, like Velasquez-Garcia, are speaking for the trees.
32. What does the author think of growing furniture according to Paragraph 1?
A. It turns out to be convenient.
B. It’ll cut down daily expense.
C. It might have a bright future.
D. It’s as important as making furniture.
33. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Risk. B. Fancy. C. Remove. D. Delay.
34. What is the purpose of Beckwith’s growing furniture?
A. To make large profits.
B. To keep biodiversity.
C. To increase production.
D. To use wild resources.
35. What’s the key to protecting forests?
A. Wide use of new biomaterials.
B. Less use of wood products and paper.
C. Making effective forest laws.
D. Caring more for the environment.
【答案】32 C 33. C 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation, Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”(这个过程从树木开始,但现在研究人员发现了一个更好的方法:在实验室里而不是在森林里生长。Velasquez-Garcia说:“如果你想要一张桌子,那么你应该自己种一张桌子。”)”可推知,作者认为种植家具更环保,是更好的选择,所以可能会有一个光明的未来。故选C项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue (组织) — wood and fiber — in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown.
根据第五段中Beckwith的话“I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity.(我想找到一种更有效的方式来利用土地和资源,这样我们就可以让更多的农田保持野生状态,或者保持低产量,但同时允许更大的生物多样性)”可知,Beckwith种植家具的目的是保持生物多样性。
根据最后一段中“When new biomaterials become readily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be preserved for their environmental, health, and recreational value.(当新的生物材料变得唾手可得时,森林将失去其经济价值,并将因其环境、健康和娱乐价值而得到保护)”可推知,保护森林的关键是新型生物材料的广泛应用。故选A项。

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY'', and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn't only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades."
“Of course I will." I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.
注意:
1.续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn't communicate as much with my phone. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I' m not saying that phones are bad and not to use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day.
