It might be fun to use your smartphone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful to your health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain(劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.

It is reported that some developed countries have shipped broken parts of computers to China.Such a thing can be founded every day although it is against international laws. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131, 000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones that were sent from Japan.
Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste (电子垃圾). Dealing with it is not an easy job because dangerous poison like mercury(汞) and lead(铅) can be found in them. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. But at present, broken computer parts are usually entombed. It may be hundreds of years before they are really goes in the earth.
Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong province is one of them. This town is named as “the ewaste capital of the world”. It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms of ewaste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan. But it comes at a cost. Many of the poison in ewaste find their way into the environment. Plastic is burned outdoors and chemical water is poured into rivers, Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted.
The Chinese government wants the country to develop, but in a way that doesn't do harm to the environment and people's life. This year, China presents a new protection law, the strictest one we have ever had. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. The days of having to carry a phone charger (充电) everywhere could soon be over.
Researchers from America have made great progress in getting power (电力) from human motion (运动). They say smart phones could get enough power just by the motion of fingers on the screen.
The low-cost device has already been tested in an American university. Scientists successfully showed an LED touch screen, a total of 20 LED lights and a keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the help of a battery (电池).
“What I predicted is the possibility of not having to charge your smart phone for a whole week, for example, because that energy will be produced by your motion,” said one of the researchers.
The completed device is as thin as a sheet of paper. Electrical energy is created when you press it. The device used to power the LED lights is the size of a hand while the device used to power the touch screen is as small as a finger.
The device will become more powerful when folded. Each time you fold it, the energy you create will be doubled. You can start with a large device, but when you fold it once, and again, and again. It’s now much smaller, but it has more energy. It may be small enough to put in a specially made device in the hindside of your shoes so that it can create power each time your heel knocks the ground. The researchers are also developing technology that would send the power produced from the heel strike to an earphone.

Many countries are facing energy problems. How can corn help the world? According to a new study, corn can provide a new kind of sustainable biofuels (生物燃料),which is green and cost less. Nopalimex, a company in Mexico, has made one of the world’s first corn-powered factories. The idea came to Sosa in Nopalimex when he was looking for ways to save money for his food factory. He now powers his factory with corn. The cost to produce the gas is half the cost of electricity.
Soon, the gas produced by Nopalimex will also be used in cars. Lately, Nopalimex’s gas is made by using the prickly pear(刺梨). To make the gas, the prickly pear is mixed together with manure(肥料). Then the mixture produces the gas that can be used as fuel.
Why prickly pear? Fuel can be made from other plants such as corn, but there are a few reasons why prickly pear is a better choice. First, prickly pears need very little water and very little care, and grow well in hot temperatures. Today, these characteristics are key. Also, unlike corn, prickly pears don’t need space that could be used for other food plants. They can grow in areas where many food plants can’t grow. Last, after making gas from prickly pears and manure, their byproducts(副产品) can be used to help grow food.
Scientists still need to do more research on making and using prickly pear gas. As projects like Nopalimex show, we have the possibility to produce more sustainable biofuel to power our lives.

Many people have special pets. One of them is the fiddler crab(招潮蟹). It is just like a living clock. It shows the time of day by the colour of its skin, which is dark by day and nearly white by night. The crab’s changing colour follows a regular twenty-four hour schedule(时间表)that exactly matches the daily rhythm of the sun.
People who raise fiddler crabs usually like a pair of them, that is, a male and a female. The size of the claws makes it very easy to tell the difference between male and female fiddler crabs. A male fiddler crab has one claw that is larger than both its other claws and the claws of the females. The females have two small claws.
Even without daylight, the crab’s skin colour continues to change exactly on time. The change of the crab’s colour probably developed slowly in answer to the daily rising and setting of the sun, to help shield the crab from sunlight and enemies. After millions of years it has become completely regular inside the living body of the crab.
The scientist notice that once each day the colour of the fiddler crab is especially dark, and that each day this happens fifty minutes later than on the day before. From this they discovered that each crab follows not only the rhythm of the sun but also that of the tide(潮水). The crab’s period of greatest darkening is exactly the time of low tide on the beach where it was caught!
( )36. How does a fiddler crab change its colour?

A serious earthquake can be a terrible experience, and it is easy to forget safety in disorder (混乱). Fortunately, most earthquake safety measures are common sense, but if you forget everything else, remember the following instructions: drop, cover, and hold on. Also, most of earthquake deaths happen after the earthquake, so remember that the danger does not end when the shaking does!
If you stay indoors during an earthquake, move away from unsupported areas and windows. Try to get under a doorway or another area of the building which is held up by strong beams (房梁). Stay under a table or desk only if it is very strong. Do not rush to lifts, because it is far safer to stay where you are. Cover your head with your arms around it and curl (蜷缩) into a ball, and wait for the shaking to stop.
As for outdoors when an earthquake happens, move to an area which is as open as possible. Don’t run into buildings, electric poles and other objects which may fall during an earthquake and injure you. Protect your head and stay low to the ground till the shaking ends and it is safe to move.
After an earthquake, many buildings are weak, although they appear safe. If you stay indoors, move people from the building quickly and help disabled or injured people. Once outdoors, move well away from the building so that if it falls down, you will not be injured. Wait till public safety officials announce that it is safe to stay indoors.
By planning ahead and keeping calm during an earthquake, you can greatly increase your chances of survival without injury.

( )48.If you stay outdoors during an earthquake, you can do all the following except________ .
    A.trying to protect your head
    B.moving to an open place
    C.moving away from buildings
D.taking the disabled people into the room
