Shackletn and all f his men lived, but the tale f their lng and difficult return is ne f the mst famus survival stries f all time.
Althugh Shackletn kept accurate recrds f the ship’s psitin and the ship’s phtgrapher even tk pictures f it as it went dwn, the ship had never been fund ever since.
On March 6, 2022, a search team annunced that it had lcated the ship. The Endurance was fund 3 kilmeters belw the cean’s surface, abut 6 kilmeters suth frm its last knwn psitin. The name can be clearly read n the back f the ship. Even thugh the ship is made f wd and is ver 100 years ld, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say the small rganisms that nrmally break dwn wden bjects underwater dn’t live in the cld waters arund Antarctica.
T lcate the Endurance the team used tw underwater rbts. They were especially useful, since they culd travel under the ice, g where the ship culd nt and find anything sticking up abve the sea flr. Last Saturday, the ship was fund. Once the ship was lcated, the rbts used high-quality cameras and scanners t recrd the Endurance in detail.

In cld winter mnths, lakes and rivers freeze ver, frming ice. Yet, fish and ther aquatic(水生的)animals manage t survive. Hw d they d it?
That's because nly the tp layer(层)f the lake r river freezes, while under the frzen layer, the water remains in its liquid frm and des nt freeze. Als, xygen is trapped under the layer f ice. As a result, fish and ther aquatic animals find it pssible t live cmfrtably in the frzen lakes and pnds.
But why desn't the entire bdy f water freeze, like a large, lake - sized ice blck? Generally, all liquids expand n heating, but water is an exceptin t this rule. If water is heated, its vlume(体积)gradually reduces. At temperatures ver 4℃ water starts expanding. It then keeps expanding with the further rise in temperature, till finally at100℃ it turns int steam r evaprates(蒸发). In ther wrds, at 4℃, water takes up the least amunt f space and it is at its heaviest. This irregular expansin f water is called abnrmal expansin, which plays an imprtant rle in nly freezing the upper layer f lakes and rivers.
When the temperature f the surface layer falls t 4℃, the water bdy becmes the heaviest and sinks dwn while the lwer water rises up until the temperature f the water bdy finally ges belw 4℃. The surface water finally fees at 0℃, flating n tp while the lwer part still remains at 4℃.
Ice des nt allw heat t pass thrugh it easily, s the freeing f the waters belw is a very slw prcess. At depths lw 30 meters, temperatures are cld and sable, but fd is scarce. As a result, animals have adapted t this situatin by grwing mre slwly but utlive many ther creatures n Earth.
8. Why can fish live in frzen lakes r rivers?
A. There is air under the layer f iceB. There are always many hles in the ice.
C. They will stay asleep in winter.D. They can make xygen with water.
9. What makes water special cmpared t ther liquids?
A. It is clrless.B. It has three frms f state.
C. It can freeze at 4℃.D. Its expansin is irregular.
10. What happens t the surface water when it drps t 4℃?
A. It remains still.B. It ges dwn.
C. It begins t expand.D. It starts t freeze.
11. What des the underlined wrd “scarce” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A. Inadequate.B. Fresh.
C. Natural.D. Delicius.
D
The research evidence is clear. Learning by trying smething yurself is superir t passively listening t lectures. It’s puzzling why mre university prfessrs dn’t teach in this mre hands - n, interactive way.
Lgan McCarty, directr f science educatin at Harvard University, is an example. Ten years ag, he was aware f the anti - lecture studies. But he cntinued t lecture. Indeed, his title at Harvard was and is “lecturer”, As a frmer pera singer, he has a gift fr drama and is a natural perfrmer.
But McCarty changed his classrm apprach after 2014, when Luis Deslauriers jined the physics department. Deslauriers is a spreader fr teaching by ding. what he calls “active learning”, and prmised t shw McCarty hw t d it. McCarty was a cnvert (皈依者). The tw scratched their heads abut why scientists - wh teach the scientific methd t their students - weren’t nticing the science themselves. S they cnducted an experiment tgether where they each taught bth ways and studied what happened.
As expected, students mastered the material mre when they were actively learning regardless f whether McCarty r Deslauriers had been their instructr. But the fascinating result was that mst students felt just the ppsite - they had learned mre in the lecture. In fllw - up interviews with sme f the students, researchers heard the students cmplain that they didn’t like the frequent switches frm grup wrk t instructr feedback in active learning. They were wrried that their errrs during class wuldn’t be crrected. Generally, they felt defeated and mre cnfused.
Tw things appear t be ging n here. When yu’re listening t a great expert explain smething well, it’s easy t mistake the speaker’s smth, easy delivery fr yur wn understanding. The secnd part f the explanatin is that real learning is hard wrk and it ften desn’t feel gd. Making mistakes and getting feedback t crrect misunderstandings is where the leaning happens.
12. Why did Lgan McCarty prefer lecturing prbably?
A. Because it impressed students mre.
B. Because it had the best teaching effect.
C. Because he is very skilled in perfrming.
D. Because he didn’t knw any ther teaching methd.
13. Hw did Deslauriers and McCarty feel abut the ppularity f passive learning?
A. Cnfused.B. Wrried.C. Excited.D. Prud
14. What can we knw abut active learning frm paragraph 4?
A. Students were nt quite satisfied with it.B. Gd lecturers had n wrk t d in it.
C. Mistakes wuldn’t be crrected in it.D. Students didn’t learn anything useful frm it.
15. What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
A. The different respnses t real learning.B. The necessary elements f learning.
C. The explanatin f the experiment’s result.D. The thery abut hw t cnduct real learning.
