When Louis Tewanima was a boy, he'd venture far beyond his village of Shungopavi on the Hopi Reservation. For fun, he’d test his stamina (体力, 耐力) by running alongside the trains before watching them pass. Then he'd turn around and run the 56 miles home. Louis Tewanima seemed born to run.
In 1907, Louis was headed east to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. With language barrier and colder weather, he had difficulty adapting to the new environment and missed his family and his way of life. Therefore, he turned to something familiar-running. He'd seen the school's track team practice, so he approached the coach Pop Warner, and asked if he could run for him.
After watching Louis run, Warner immediately realized Louis had talent. Warner coached him on applying his stamina and strength to track and field. It wasn’t long before medals, trophies(奖杯), and prizes filled Louis's room at the Carlisle school, and he became known as one of the best distance runners in America.
Later, Pop Warner knew that the U. S. Olympic Team needed runners for the 1908 Summer Olympic in London, England. Louis trained, entered his first Olympic, and placed ninth in the marathon. Four years later, he competed in the 1912 Summer Olympic in Stockholm, Sweden. This time, he ranthe 1, 000-meter race and finished in second place. For 52 years, Louis Tewanima's silver medal marked the best finish for
the U. S. in that event at the Olympics. Billy Mills, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, won gold for the U. S. in that event at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Shortly after the Stockholm Olympics, Louis returned to his village. He reunited with his wife and family and settled into herding sheep and growing corn. In 1954, he was named to the all-time U. S.
    Olympic track field team.
Despite the difficulties of his changing surroundings, Louis Tewanima proved to be a man of honor and strength, and many people recognize him as a hero to this day.

The enjoyment of reading books is celebrated on World Book Day on April 23. It's a day to celebrate the privilege of being able to read, so head to the library or curl up on the sofa and just be a bookworm!
Books are a valuable aspect of society but this wasn't always the case. The first form of a book was achieved by the Chinese in the 3rd century, although their books consisted of thick pages, made out of bamboo, which were stitched(缝) together. By the mid-15th century, the printing press revolutionized books to become what they are today and made them readily accessible for everyone. Thanks to this clever invention we are able to enjoy the prose (散文) and poetry of countless authors and poets-from Shakespeare and Tolstoy to George R. R. Martin.
World Book Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on April 23, 1995. This date is chosen because it is the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and prominent Spanish chronicler (编年史家)Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
Before this, there were several ideas on when World Book Day should be celebrated. Originally, Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés suggested that the day should be on a day that honored the author. Miguel de Cervantes. This meant that it could either be on his birthday, on October 7, or the day he died, on April 23. Because the day he died coincided with the date on which William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega had also died, this date was chosen. Surprisingly, there are several other famous authors who have also died on April 23, like William Wordsworth and David Halberstam.
Around the world, there are many other dates on which World Book Day takes place. The UK, Sweden, and Ireland all celebrate World Book Day on different dates.

    D. Because it is the anniversary of the death of two literary giants.
    31. What can we infer about World Book Day?

An international team led by Chinese scientists has successfully produced the youngest human cells outside the organism, which may pave the way for advances in organ regeneration(再生).
In 2012, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Shinya Yamanaka and John Gurdon. The former is one of the developers of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPS) technology, while the latter has conducted pioneering research on nuclear transplantation. These studies make scientists free from the ethical limitations on using human embryos (胚胎) to obtain stem cells, thus enabling further disease research related to stem cells.
A team of researchers from China, Britain and Bangladesh transformed pluripotent stem cells, or an “adult” version of early embryonic cells, back into a more “young” version of cells with developmental potential, equal to fertilized eggs(受精卵)in their Day 3 developmental stage. The study published Tuesday in the journal Nature announced the discovery of a rapid, controllable method to change stem cells into real 8-cell embryo-like cells, without relying on genetic engineering.
The 8-cell stage embryo-like cells recreate the embryonic state of a fertilized egg after only three divisions, making them the youngest human cells acquired outside the organism ever known, said Li Wenjuan, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is one of the corresponding authors of the paper. Cells described as“totipotent” mean that they have the potential to create all types of cells within embryonic and extra-embryonic tissues, according to the researchers. “These cells can not only distinguish into placental (胎盘的) tissue but also potentially develop into more mature organs, ”Li said.
The researchers also transplanted the 8-cell stage cells into adult mice, and those cells developed into complex teratomas (畸胎瘤), according to the study. The experiment was promoted by the single-cell sequencing(先后顺序)technology developed by Shenzhen-based BGI-Research. Ethical review had approved of the relevant study.
    32. What makes the research related to stem cells possible?
    A. The development of iPS technology.
    B. The advances in organ regeneration.
    C. The demands for nuclear transplantation.
    D. The former studies of Shinya Yamanaka and John Gurdon.
    33. How did the researchers transform stem cells?
    A. By making organ regeneration.
    B. By using a controllable method.
    C. By making required human cells.
    D. By conducting pioneering research.
    34. What does the underlined word “totipotent” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Mature.
    B. Capable.
    C. Content.
    D. Advanced.
    35. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The importance of stem cells.
    B. The study of genetic engineering.
    C. The production of the youngest human cells.
    D. The application of transforming embryonic cells.

Just as is said, “Unawareness of dawn after the sleep in spring, hearing the twitters of birds everywhere”, spring is a time when people can fall asleep easily. But many modern people suffer from insomnia(失眠), tossing and turning every night. 36__.
Make a schedule, and stick to it. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body to regulate when you get sleepy and when you wake up. As night approaches, levels of melatonin rise, becoming a signal to the body that it's time for bed. Production of melatonin is stopped by light-so levels naturally fall as daylight approaches, getting you ready to greet the day. To work properly, the release of this hormone needs to occur at regular times. 37__.
Don't lay in bed awake. The best sleep tip you can ever give somebody is get up-don't lay in bed awake but not sleeping. Whether it's the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you've been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up and reset. Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don't spend that time awake in bed. Why is that so important? 38__Establishing that positive relationship between the bed and sleep can be beneficial on nights where your schedule has to be erratic(飘忽不定的) due to work or travel.
__39_Many people view sleeping as the final thing they have to do in a jam-packed day, worth delaying to catch up on housework, schoolwork, office work or the latest binge-worthy television series. That thinking needs to be changed. 40__See your sleep as the amount of time you need in order to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow.
    A. Set yourself up for tomorrow.
    B. Change your attitude about sleep.
    C. So it's important to have a standard wake up time.
    D. The problem is we don't stop and we don't disconnect.
    E. Don't see your sleep as the amount of time you have left in your day.
    F. Here are some tips people can follow to actually “train” their brains to fall asleep.
    G. Because lying in bed awake can form an association in your brain that can lead to chronic insomnia.

Gento Galmes, 57, had driven to pick up his daughter back to Sant Lloren. His daughter, Margalida Galmes, 24, was spending her holidays at his small summer home in the suburb. But when they intended to return Sant Lloren, the unexpected floodwaters happened, forcing them to stay put.
Two days later, the flood still didn’t recede (消退). After supper, Galmes was looking out of the window of his small summer home. At around the same time, his neighbor Miquel Montoro stepped out of the door of his summer house. It was now well past 7 p. m. and dark, but during the frequent flashes of lightning, Montoro could see a car in the floodwaters.
Suddenly, just above the roar of the water, he heard screams coming from the white car 40 yards or so out into the powerful stream. Galmes heard the screams, too, and rushed out to join his neighbor. “We've got to do something, " he told Montoro.
Montoro agreed. “If we don't try, we might hear those screams for the rest of our lives, ” he said.
Montoro ran to his van and shone its headlights across the water toward the car so they could get a better idea of what they were facing. But even with the headlights, they still couldn't really see any details-not even how many people they might need to rescue. What they could see was how far they would have to go into the fast flowing waters.
Montoro grabbed a long rope from his house and the two men tied themselves together like mountain climbers: Montoro, a strong 47-year-old blacksmith (铁匠), would be the anchor (锚), giving Galmes the line as Galmes went through the flood. Galmes, like his neighbor, had wound the rope around his middle but with enough remaining free so he could throw the loose end to those needing rescue.
    注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
They started into the water and toward the car.

But it wasn't within the reach of the trapped couple.

From my point of view, schools in the future will have three distinguished differences. First of all, there will no classrooms any more, with all students study anywhere with wearable VR devices. Besides, there will be no teachers, for AI can take their place to teach. Last but not least, no curriculum exists. Instead, students can learn what they need and what they want.
With the rapid development of technology, I believe it will become reality in the near future. That's all. Thank you!

    第二节
They started into the water and toward the car: The two men could feel themselves sinking into churning mud. But, according to plan, Montoro stood firm while Galmes fought the current to struggle ahead. Along with the occasional flash of lightning, it took Galmes ten minutes to get within ten yards of the car. He could make out a couple clinging to the back. Bracing himself, Galmes threw the end of the rope toward the car, hoping someone would be able to grab hold.
But it wasn't within the reach of the trapped couple. After several attempts, the husband finally caught the rope. Galmes gestured to him to tie it around his wife's waist, and then Galmes steadied himself as he pulled the woman toward him. Galmes hauled on the rope until the woman was safe. With the same method, the husband was rescued eventually. On the river bank safe and sound, leaving the roar of water behind them, the couple felt what happened just now was just a nightmare, but a warm glow flooded into their inner hearts as they thought of the unselfish assistance of Galmes and Montoro. The most precious part of humans is their care and help for each other.

. . had wound the rope around his middle but with enough remaining free so he could throw the loose end to those needing rescue.

M: Sabrina, they're all in India. The cost of flying from their hometowns to the UK would be thousands of pounds.
    (14)
W: Well, I hope they can visit in the future.

W: Yes, we have 20 people arriving for lunch and an additional 30 guests coming in the early evening for dinner.

    Text 10
Steve, you're becoming a young man, and it's time that I tell you about the family business. (17)(18) Since you were a child, you've been around our wine shop, but I've never told you about its creation by your grandfather. (17) As you know, in the 1980s, your grandfather moved us from Russia to Canada. At that time, I was a young boy, and the country was experiencing social and economic issues. As a low-income family, we were forced to either stay and wait for conditions to improve or leave and start a new life elsewhere. With 1, 000 dollars and a few boxes of clothing, we moved to Canada. This was one of my life's scariest moments, but I trusted my father. We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment while my father worked at a wine store. Yes, the same wine store that he went on to buy. Then, I helped grow this business to an online store and a national one. (18) Now, I want to teach you about the company. (19) With your help, we'll create social media pages for this store and open more locations. (19) (20) What is important is that you learn to manage this business and never sell it.
