Welcome to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art(SFMOMA).We have built a website(网站)that we hope you will find easy to use, informative, and beautiful.
As one of the world’s most famous museums of modern art, SFMOMA has had an active web presence for ten years. During this period we have redesigned our site twice, always with the idea that a museum such as ours should continually try to improve the ways in which it serves a variety of public.
We have all become comfortable with the idea that the physical museum space and the virtual(虚拟的)space of the internet go very well together. Like many who have spent time exploring the web, we also know that there are some programs that make more sense in physical space while others exist better in this extraordinary virtual world.
We bring works from the white walls of our galleries(画廊)to online visitors throughout searchable online collection and the programs produced by our Interactive Educational Technologies team. Our program Making Sense of Modem Art addresses many of the questions that we know are asked by visitors as they meet key artworks in SFMOMA’s collection.
We hope you enjoy your online visit and look forward to welcoming you at the Museum as well.

Jaguar (美 洲 豹) numbers have dropped very fast in the last hundred years. The main cause for this drop is people.
Jaguars once lived from Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico all the way to southern Argentina. Since 1900, the amount of land suitable for jaguars to live in has dropped by more than half. Today, wild jaguar families no longer live anywhere in the United States.
Gunshot wounds are the main causes of jaguar deaths. Jaguars sometimes kill cattle (牛). As a result, farmers shoot jaguars to protect their animals.
In the 1960s, people shot more than 15,000 jaguars a year in Brazil. Many farmers worry that steps to protect jaguars will lead to more jaguars killing cattle.
Studies show that people often blame jaguars for killing cattle. If there is enough wild prey, jaguars seem to prefer to eat wild animals, such as deer, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Jaguars are also in danger because people cut down trees for farms, cities, and towns. This action has destroyed more than one and ä half billion acres (202,300,00 hectares) of jaguar habitat(栖息地)。That's nearly two-thirds the size of the United States!
Scientists believe that the key for jaguars to remain alive is to find ways for jaguars and people to live together peacefully.
    42. It is stated in the text that a hundred years ago ______________
A.15,000 Jaguars were killed a year B. there were much more wild jaguars
    C. Jaguars were more dangerous D. Jaguars preferred to eat cattle
43.From the text we know that ________________
    A. gunshot wounds caused more deaths of the cattle
    B. no wild jaguar families remain in the United States
    C. the land in North America is not suitable for jaguars
    D. farmers are trying to shoot jaguars to protect their land
A选项偷换了概念,由第三段得知gunshot wound caused more deaths of jaguars 而非 cattle,故A错。
44.The underlined word "prey" in Paragraph 5 refers to _______________
    A. food that cattle eat B. animals that jaguars hunt for food
    C. disease caused by wild animals D. deer raised by farmers
45.Which of the following causes the dropping of jaguar numbers?
    A. The reducing of farm animals. B. Thousands of trees cut in cities.
    C. The fight between jaguars and people. D. The change of jaguar habitat.
Millions of people all over the world use the word OK. In fact, some people say the word is used more often than any other word in the world. OK means all right or acceptable. It expresses agreement.
Some people say it came from the Native American Indian tribe(部落) known as the Choctaw (乔克托语). The Choctaw word “okeh” means the same as the American word okay. Experts say early explorers in the American West spoke the Choctaw language in the nineteenth century and the language spread across the country.
But many people do not accept this. Language expert Allen Walker Read talked about the word “OK” in reports published in the 1960s. He said the word began being used in the 1830s. It was a short way of writing a different spelling of the words “all correct”. Some foreign-born people wrote all “correct” as “o-l-l-k-o-r-r-e-c-t”, and used the letters O.K. Other people say a railroad worker named Obadiah Kelly invented the word long ago. They said he put the first letters of his names-O and K-on each object people gave him to send on the train. Not everyone agrees with this explanation, either. But experts do agree that the word is purely American. And it has spread to almost every country on Earth.

    C. as a short form of "all correct" D. by a man named "Obadiah Kelly"
He said the word began being used in the 1830s. It was a short way of writing a different spelling of the words “all correct”.
    45. What do experts feel certain about the word OK?
    A. It's all American B. It was made up in 1830s
    C. It was once used in railway station D. It is understood differently in the world
    答案:A
But experts do agree that the word is purely American. And it has spread to almost every country on Earth.

The origins of this website, tasmanian-tiger. com, go back to 1978 when we, Buckand Joan Emberg, saw to Tasmanian tigers. We called the Department of Parks and Wildlife people and were told not to tell anyone. They said everyone would then be going through the bush tiger-hunting(猎虎).We accepted what they said. Then we found what we thought might be tiger droppings near our house. Excitedly we took them to Hobart, our capital city, and presented our "prize" to an official. He took the droppings and threw it carelessly into a drawer The result of that action, of course, was the destruction(破坏)of any scientific evidence. This is where we began to feel that something was wrong. Did they really care about saving the animal ……If it existed? In short, we and people like us were told to keep it quiet.
Later, we thought we found some tiger prints. The local newspaper published the story and, like most people who admitted they saw a tiger in the wild, we received no respect.
Here's something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: Struggling with school work on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
This theory might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. "Don't be too quick to get help when learning something new," Professor Manu Kapur said. "Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways."
Kapur tested his idea out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, the students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher's help. In the second group, the students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher. With the teacher's help, the students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. The students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas.
The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process, not just the solution(答案).
Kapur’s advice for children is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to the teacher for help. "Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won't work," says Kapur, "The struggle needs to be an attempt to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible."
42.What did Kapur find out in his recent study?

    C. The best way to support learning. D. The benefit of a teacher's help.

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. He was also an inventor, an architect (建筑师), an astronomer(天文学家),and a scientist. Leonardo was born in Italy in 1452. When he was fourteen years old, he moved to the city of Florence to study painting. People could see that he was a great artist, and he quickly became known throughout Italy. However, he had other interests, too. One of them was city planning and architecture. He designed several churches and was hired as an engineer to help repair others.
Later in his life, Leonardo became a teacher. When he was in his forties, he invented a flying machine which one of his young students tried to fly. Unluckily, it didn’t work. So Leonardo made another flying machine. Another of his students tested it by jumping with it from a tall tower. The one didn’t work either. Luckily, the student wasn’t hurt. Leonardo made many machines like this.

Large cities are known to have higher temperatures than rural areas(农村地区 )in summer months. This extra heat can raise temperatures in cities by about one to three degrees compared to rural areas.
Scientists say there are many reasons for this. One reason is that heat from the sun can go through many of the building materials commonly found in cities. One such material is asphalt(沥青), which is often placed on top of buildings and used to cover road surfaces.
Recently, researchers studied ways to reduce the heat in developed areas. Scientists with the National Center for Atmospheric Research led the study. They found that painting the tops of buildings white could possibly help to cool cities. The researchers used a computer model that could tell the effects of the sun’s heat. They compared the effects of black surfaces on rooftops with white roofs. They found that a city with only white rooftops could reduce the heat effect by 33%.
However, white roofs could have the opposite effect in winter. That is because they have a cooling effect within buildings. Cooler building temperatures in winter could require more energy to heat the buildings.
The researchers found that some cities would be helped more than others from white roofs. This would depend on the total surface area of roofs in a city. It would also depend on the building materials used since some materials are less resistant to heat (耐热的) than others. The researchers say white roofs would work best in areas with temperatures and strong sunlight all year.
