In 1980, I lived in Sydney, Nva Sctia which was a dirty steel twn then. The steel factry was fed by a large number f cal mines surrunding the area. A bird nce lived inside. Treated kindly by the miners, it was well fed. It sat and waited t give up its life as a warning f the deadly methane gas (沼气) the cal prduced. With n clr r smell, a buildup f methane wuld kill the miners and destry the tunnels they wrked in. The bird’s death, like a smke detectr, warned the men f danger.
“Turn ff yur helmet lights!” the guide then rdered in the tunnel. “I want yu t experience the life f a miner.” One by ne we turned ff ur lights. The darkness was ttal-s thick that yu thught the very air itself had been sucked ut f the mine. And the silence! The silence was cmplete except fr the breaths f fear frm my cmpanins. In the end, when we were pulled back t the surface the warm sun had new meaning fr us.
Back in my small, rented rm in a basement, I clsed the curtains and turned ff the lights. I thught deeply abut a miner’s life under the grund, black dust, n sunshine and much danger.
