A
At the start f 2012, I set myself the challenge f trying t read a bk frm every cuntry in a year t find ut what I was missing.
S I created a blg called “A Year f Reading the Wrld” and asked fr suggestins f titles that I culd read in English.
The respnse was amazing. Befre I knew it, peple all ver the planet were suggesting ideas and ffering t help. Sme psted titles f bks frm their hme cuntries. Others did hurs f research n my behalf. In additin, several writers, like Panama’s Juan David Mrgan, sent me unpublished translatins f their nvels, giving me a rare pprtunity t read wrks therwise unavailable t the 62 percent f Britns wh nly speak English. Even with such an extrardinary team f bibliphiles (藏书家) behind me, hwever, surcing bks was n easy task.
This was particularly true fr Prtuguese-speaking African cuntries. There’s precius little t ffer as far as states such as the Cmrs, Madagascar and Mzambique – I had t rely n unpublished manuscripts (手稿) fr several f these.
Then there were places where stries are rarely written dwn. If yu’re after a gd stry in the Marshall Islands, fr example, yu’re mre likely t g and hear ne f the lcal strytellers than yu are t pick up a bk.
All in all, tracking dwn stries like these tk as much time as the reading. It was tugh t fit it all in arund wrk and many were the nights when I sat bleary-eyed (困倦而视线模糊的) int the small hurs t make sure I stuck t my target f reading ne bk every 1.87 days.
But the effrt was wrth it. As I made my way thrugh the planet’s literary landscapes, extrardinary things started t happen. Far frm simply armchair traveling, I fund I was inhabiting the mental space f the strytellers. It tk me inside the thughts f individuals living far away and shwed me the wrld thrugh their eyes. These stries nt nly pened my mind t the different aspects f life in ther places, but pened my heart t the way peple there might feel.Lands that had nce seemed extic and remte became clse and familiar t me – places I culd identify with. At its best, I learned, fictin makes the wrld real.
21. What can we learn abut the readers f the blg “A Year f Reading the Wrld”?
A. They shuld feel free t uplad their bk reviews.
B They are welcme t share their strytelling skills.
C. They are asked t give advice n what bk t read abut their cuntry.
D. They have t send a list f their favrite bks frm ther cuntries.
22. Why is the literature f the Marshall Islands rarely knwn t the wrld?
A. The quality f literature there is very pr.
B. Mst f its literature is written in Prtuguese.
C. Writers there are unwilling t publish their manuscripts.
D. The cuntry’s literature is mstly in the frm f ral stries.
23. Which f the fllwing wuld the authr prbably agree with?
A. She spent far mre time searching fr bks than reading them.
B. She fund the reading challenge exhausting but rewarding.
C. Bk researchers verseas culd help her with her challenge.
D. Reading freign bks wuld spare her the truble f traveling.

It might sund like an imaginary character ut f a bk: The gldfish wh culd drive. But it’s real. Israeli researchers created a rbtic car and reprted that they taught fish t navigate it n land.
The team had been dreaming up ways t test fish navigatin (航行) fr a while, accrding t Shachar Givn, first authr f the published study.
“We are always trying t challenge urselves – and ur fish. The idea f having the fish navigate n land seemed exactly like the impssible srt f challenge we like t tackle. Lucky fr us, it was nt s impssible,” said Givn.
This experiment is knwn as “dmain transfer methdlgy(方法论)”, which means determining whether a species is able t perfrm tasks utside its natural envirnment.
First, the team created a water-filled tank n wheels that mved in respnse t the mvements f the fish. Then they taught the gldfish hw t drive it.
The fish first had t cnnect their wn swimming mvements t the mvements f the vehicle s they culd navigate it. Then they were given a destinatin: a pink target bard in a rm that resulted in a fd reward when the vehicle tuched it. A cmputerized camera system attached t this “fish perated vehicle” recrded and translated the fish’s swimming directins.
After several days f training, the fish successfully navigated the vehicle t the target frm different starting psitins in the rm – even if they faced bstacles like false targets r hitting a wall. Sme did particularly well.
Althugh previus studies have shwn that fish can navigate within water-related envirnments, the authrs suggest this study shws the ability t navigate is universal t all species and independent f the envirnment.
By cntrlling different variables (变量), the team als shwed that the fish used a cmbinatin f cues t navigate, including the target’s clr and lcatin.
24. Which research prcess is mentined in the experiment?
A. A watery tank that culd mve in water was created.
B. A cmputerized system t guide the fish was adpted.
C. The fish were rewarded when they perfrmed crrectly.
D. The vehicles were navigated frm the same starting psitins.
25. What’s the assumed finding f Givn’s study?
A. Sme fish can drive the car withut cues.
B. Fish cannt navigate the car when meeting bstacles.
C. The gldfish have better navigatinal skills than ther fish.
D. The ability t navigate is unattached t the envirnment.
26. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. All Species Can Navigate
B. Gldfish Turn Out t Be Real Drivers
C. Fish Navigatin Meets New Challenges
D Animal Experiments Are Essential in Research

Unlike any ther art frm, mvies require hundreds f peple and piles f mney. With such financial risks, studis want t attract as many peple as pssible and make a big prfit. I ften cmplain that chasing prfits ruins mvies. Imagine if Italian painter Lenard da Vinci (1452-1519) had t satisfy investrs fr The Last Supper.
In May, Paramunt released its trailer (预告片) fr a live-actin Snic the Hedgehg mvie. Everyne was excited, including me. I lve this character, in part because he’s ridiculus. Hedgehgs (刺猬) aren’t fast, nr are they blue. Had the game’s designers ever actually seen a hedgehg? Wh cares? Snic has always lked cl. Nbdy wuld play a vide game featuring a realistic hedgehg character.
When I saw the mvie trailer, thugh, I wrried. Snic’s eyes were t far apart and his big teeth lked like they wuld eat my fingers. His bdy lked like a child wearing pajamas(睡衣). Snic didn’t lk cl. He lked like the half-human result f a failed genetic experiment.
Yu knw the internet. Peple there will fight yu fr saying the sky is blue. This time, hwever, the internet std tgether: Snic lked TERRIBLE. Peple jked abut it all ver scial media. Paramunt culdn’t ignre this nline utrage and quickly annunced a redesign, at great cst t the cmpany.
At first, I thught it was awesme. Back when I was a kid, there was n scial media. We wuld have been stuck with creepy, crappy (怪异且蹩脚的) Snic and his terrifying teeth. After the redesign, Snic lks cler than ever. I’m glad the studi brke its budget t get Snic right.
But I’m a little wrried, t. What if this starts a trend? What if directrs keep ging t Sina Weib r Twitter t make peple happy? One thing I’ve learned in life is that if yu try t make everybdy happy, nbdy will be happy.
If an art frm nly exists t make mney by giving audiences what they expect, can we really call it “art” anymre? Sme f my favrite mvies are nes that nbdy liked at first. Usually, what makes them gd is the same thing that made them unppular. Studis might end up with lts f mney but we wuld end up with a lt f bad mvies.
27. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing the text?
A. T describe his lve fr the character the hedgehg, Snic.
B. T prmte the mvie Snic the Hedgehg fr its redesign.
C. T cmplain abut hw bad Snic lked in the film trailer.
D. T express his cncern ver studis’ attempts t please audiences.
28. Why did the authr get wrried when he saw the earlier mvie trailer?
A. Snic lked awful in the trailer.
B. Snic lked like a realistic hedgehg.
C. They chse the wrng actr t play Snic.
D. The plt f the mvie was dull.
29. What des the underlined wrd “utrage” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Anger.B. Surprise.C. Humr.D. Thrill.
30. Which f the fllwing wuld the authr prbably agree with?
A. Great wrks f art are always disfavred at the beginning.
B. Great mvies are nes that reflect the audience’s tastes.
C. The best mvies will end up with great prfits.
D. A gd mvie culd gain little ppularity at first.

In 1991, there was a time when my friend and I wrked in a backward African cuntry, Niger, hit by sandstrms and burning heat. There were many things I fund difficult abut this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. S after finishing five mnths f nursing wrk there, we mved n t wrk at a health clinic in neighburing cuntry, Burkina Fas. “It's much greener in Burkina.
