What is art?Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.—Ralph Waldo EmersonWhat can you see in the picture? How does it make you feel?Who painted it?School of Athens, fresco (湿壁画) painted by artist Raphael. It is painted between 1509 and 1511 on a wall in the Apostolic Palace (使徒宫) in Vatican City (梵蒂冈城). It is perhaps the most famous of all of Raphael’s paintings and one of the most significant artworks of the Renaissance.School of Athens is showing Plato and Aristotle surrounded by philosophers, past and present, in a splendid (华丽的) architectural setting. At the centre of the School of Athens are Plato and Aristotle.  The two men had different pursuits (追求), Plato being engaged with such spiritual ideas as truth, beauty, and justice and Aristotle being concerned with worldly reality. These differences are evident in the painting. Plato, on the left, points skyward while holding a copy of Timaeus (蒂迈欧篇), and Aristotle gestures to the ground and props up a copy of his Ethics (伦理学).Do you know some famous western paintings and painters?Giotto di BondoneMasaccioLook at the following pictures to know some famous painters and try to gain insights into their unique styles. Based on Giotto and Masaccio’s innovations, they produced some of the greatest art that Europe had ever seen.i. His paintings are set apart from other paintings by their realistic human faces and deep emotional impact. Which one do you like most? Why?What do you know about these paintings? One way to understand Western art is to look at the history of its painting. In the Middle Ages, Western art aimed to teach Christianity, so it was two-dimensional and unrealistic. This changed with the emotional paintings of Giotto di Bondone. Renaissance painting became less religious as people wanted paintings that were beautiful, interesting, and accurate. At this time ideas on perspective by Masaccio were adopted by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, producing some of Europe's greatest paintings. The use of oil paints reached its height with Rembrandt, a master of shadow and light. Photography in the mid-19th century meant accuracy was no longer needed. So, named after a painting by Claude Monet, Impressionism focused on light and movement in nature or daily life, while Renoir used such techniques to show people's humanity. Modern Art saw the Cubism of Picasso and other artists' abstract creations seemingly ask, “What is art?”
