The sun kept dipping down into the ocean and the lights came on at the harbor, casting sudden shadows on the ground, illuminating the faces that were just a second ago silhouettes. The sky was golden and purple, the ocean a darker shade of violet.

The moon went slowly down in loveliness; she departed into the depth of the horizon, and long veil-like shadows crept up the sky through which the stars appeared.
All brightness was gone, leaving nothing. We stepped out of the tent onto nothing. Sledge and tent were there, Estraven stood beside me, but neither he nor I cast any shadow. There was dull light all around, everywhere. When we walked on the crisp snow no shadow showed the footprint. We left no track. Sledge, tent, himself, myself: nothing else at all. No sun, no sky, no horizon, no world.
Night had fallen fast upon the land. No more than an hour ago the sky was painted with hues of red, orange and pink, but all color had faded leaving only a matt black canvas with no stars to be looked upon.
It would be a cold moonless night. The sky was dark and low, the air so chilled it hurt to breathe. Already the ground was laid white with frost and any water that had been liquid under the winter sun had become ice.

    【检测训练】
    1. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born in a secluded village on a mountain. Day after day, my parents dug the yellow dry soil with their backs towards the sky.
One day, I wanted to buy a handkerchief, which all girls around me seemed to have. So, one day I stole 50 cents from my father’s drawer. Father discovered about the stolen money right away. “Who stole the money?” he asked my brother and me. I was stunned, too afraid to talk. Suddenly, my younger brother took the blame, and punishment for me. In the middle of the night, all of a sudden, I cried out loudly. I still hated myself for not having enough courage to admit what I did. Years went by, but the incident still seemed like it just happened yesterday. That year, my brother was 8 years old and I was 11 years old.
When my brother was in his last year of secondary school, he was accepted in an upper secondary school in the central part of town. At the same time, I was accepted into a university in the province. However, my parents couldn’t possibly finance both of us. At that time, my brother walked out, he stood in front of Father and said, “Dad, I don’t want to continue my study anymore.”
Nobody knew that on the next day, before dawn, my brother left the house with a few pieces of worn-out clothes and a few dry beans. He sneaked to my side of the bed and left a note on my pillow, saying “Getting into a university is not easy. I will find a job and send money to you.” I held the note while sitting on my bed, and cried until I lost my voice.
With the money father borrowed from the whole village, and the money my brother earned from carrying cement on his back at a construction site, finally, I managed to get to the third year of my study in the university. That year, my brother was 17 years old and I was 20 years old.

    【参考范文】
One day, while I was studying in my room, my roommate came in and told me that a villager was waiting for me. I wondered why there would be a villager looking for me. I walked out, and I saw my brother from afar. His whole body was covered with dirt, dust, cement and sand. I asked him why he didn’t tell my roommate that he was my brother. He was worried that others would have a prejudice on his appearance. I felt so touched, and tears filled my eyes. I swept away dirt and dust from my brother’s body.
From his pocket, he took out a beautiful necklace. He gave it to me and said, “I saw all the girls in town are wearing it. I think you should also have one.” I could not hold back myself anymore. I pulled my brother into my arms and cried. That year, my brother was 20 years old and I was 23 years old. Love and care for the one we love every single day of our life. We may think what we did is just a small deed, but to that someone, it may mean a lot.

Last Christmas my elder sister Jane got a unicycle (独轮脚踏车)she had requested. I thought it kind of strange, wondering why she would want something like that. She did ride and practice for a while, but eventually stopped.
Curious, I tried it, finding it very hard and thinking it impossible for a weak girl like me to learn. Since the dining room of our old house had low beams (屋梁),I used them like monkey bars to practice riding, which helped a lot. Because I thought it was really fun, I practiced every spare moment I had, teaching myself to go forwards, backwards and to turn. Practicing was something I loved to do in my spare time, but it did get discouraging when I fell. After months of practicing, I finally made it.
One morning, our teacher Maria excitedly announced that a school talent show was to be held to raise money for charity. She encouraged my classmates to sign up fbr it. I'm not always best in front of a crowd, which was why I was very nervous when I meant to put on my perfdrmance by doing a hula hoop (圈)and riding a unicycle on stage. But I overcame my fear and entered myself fbr the talent show, fbr which I practiced a lot in case I should mess up.
My routine (整套动作)was to do the hula hoop from my neck, down to my stomach, then to my knees. After that, I was to ride my unicycle forwards and backwards on stage. Lastly I would do the hula hoop while riding the unicycle. I was to do all this accompanied by my carefully selected music. I wondered what people from my seventh grade would think of my performance. With my friends inspiring me, I built up my confidence. On the night of the show, many people found out there was going to be a unicycle performance, so more came, even the headmaster.

    【参考范文】
There was tremendous applause when the curtain rose. I was both nervous and excited when it was my turn. I had a deep breath and then rode my unicycle towards the stage. When I heard the music, I started to put the hula hoop in my neck. Carefully, I moved it down to my stomach. Everything seemed good. The audience applauded for me when the hula hoop was about to my knees. And then, an unlucky thing happened. I didn't ride backwards firmly so I tumbled. At that moment I felt my heart was broken. However, after a very short rest, I stood up with my red face. I tried again and finally, I made it. Seeing this, all the audience cheered and applauded happily.
When I got home, I couldn't wait to check my mobile phone left at home. My deskmate Mary sent the performance video to me and expressed that she was so proud of me. There were also many messages from my classmates and teachers, which encouraged me a lot. Not only could I challenge myself but also I helped my school raise money for charity in this performance.

When I was in second grade, I did something that really taught me a lesson. After finishing my homework on a sunny weekend, I was thinking about what to do for fun. Then my best friend, Eric, called me and asked me to go for a bike ride in a park near our school. I readily agreed.
I got on my bike and couldn’t wait to fly to the park. As soon as I entered the park, I saw Eric, who was reading a book on a stone bench. How could this fellow be so quiet today? What a rare thing! I shouted to him, “Eric, I’m coming!” But Eric remained the same. This guy became crazy about reading. What book interested him so much?
It was not until I patted him on the shoulder that he looked up. Eric quickly put his book on the bench, smiled at me and said, “I’m so sorry! Now let’s start riding!” Then we rode our bikes freely in the vast park. After a while, we went on our own routes to enjoy the fun. Suddenly, I found myself riding to the stone bench where Eric had just sat, and I noticed the book again. It raised my curiosity greatly. I thought to myself, “What kind of book could it be that made him so captivated (着迷)?” I stopped and bent down to pick up the book. Wow! A Little Story, a Big Lesson. This was the book of my dreams! Suddenly, an idea came to my mind: Take the book away secretly!
I looked around, but there was no sign of Eric, so I put the book into my jacket, looked for Eric and deliberately rode my bike past him in the park. I told him that there was something urgent going on at home, so I had to leave first. Eric smiled and said goodbye to me. Then I hurried home on my bike. When I passed the living room, my mother saw me and asked, “What’s that bilge (鼓起) in your jacket?” “Oh. Nothing…,” I replied. Then I slipped into my room and opened the book.

Suddenly, my mother came in. She stood in front of me and stared at me calmly. The more silent she was, the more frightened I became. After a few minutes, my mother finally spoke up, “Tell me where you got this book.” “I borrowed it from one of my friends. No, from the school library,” I said. My mother touched my head and said, “Just tell me the truth. Your eyes have told me your secret.”
Finally, I told my mother exactly what had happened. “It is a good habit to read books, but you have made a big mistake. There is no excuse for you to take other people’s books without their permission. Come on! Return the book to Eric and apologize to him!” On hearing these words, I was really ashamed of what had done. I said nothing, closed the book, ran out of the house, got on my bike and sped off to the park.

What's the saddest moment you can think about in your life right now? I know mine. That day was one of the saddest days of my life. It was a Sunday in the year of 2020. I arrived at my class that morning. As soon as I walked in, the mood immediately felt depressing and uncomfortable. I knew exactly why the mood felt this way. The classmates around me were controlling their sadness. Today was the day when our head teacher would leave and move to another school. Mr. Smith was finally leaving our school after five years teaching here.
Mr. Smith was an extremely likable guy. He was very easy to talk with and to have fun with. He was cool, relaxed, and was always friendly when you would see him. He watched us grow up. He taught us knowledge and to love others. I couldn't even imagine how things were going to be without him. These thoughts flooded my mind, and I became discouraged.
“Hey, are you alright?” My friend interrupted my thinking.
“Yeah, I'm alright. I'm just kind of sad that Mr. Smith's leaving,” I replied.
“Yeah, me too. I had so many good times with him when I was younger.”
“I wish he were our teacher forever,” as I sighed, all happy moments flooded my mind.
“Hey, can you stop talking please?” my deskmate politely asked.
My friend quickly leaned back to his spot, and I began to think again.
“Thank you everyone for my times here. I will forever keep these memories and friend-ships I've made in the past five years.” He took a deep breath and announced, “As a gift for my leaving, please look under your seats.”
Confused, I slowly checked under my seat to see a yellow block of wood that read “LOVE” on it. I quickly grabbed it and began to study it. After seconds of analyzing this strange rectangle, I realized that it was a Jenga block (积木块).

The Jenga block was freshly painted bright yellow. I immediately felt sadness and I began to tear up. I glanced over to my friend to see him crying and noticed that his Jenga block was very different from mine. Curiosity quickly became my objective as I looked around me to see that everyone's Jenga block was different. Some had different designs, colors, pat-terms, but all had the word “LOVE” written in some way. “This is a reminder to always love others,” Mr. Smith said slowly.
Reflecting on this moment today, maybe that day wasn't the worst day after all. I keep these memories to myself, especially the word “LOVE”, which became my ultimate lifestyle and taught me how I lived everyday. The more I grew up, the more I understood why loving others was so important. I've gotten most of my friends this way and people respect me more as a person. To this day, the Jenga block sits on the top of my computer desk as a reminder to love others.

I am the director of a nonprofit organization that cares for homeless and runaway teenagers and young adults in Burlington, Vermont. On one beautiful Autumn day, I had family in town visiting, so I took the day off and we spent the afternoon walking down the main street, having lunch and going into different shops. Toward the end of the day, I decided to go into my office to get my mail and take it home. I had a key to the back door and planned to simply slip inside, make ray way to the mailroom unknown to anyone, and quietly leave.
My plan went perfectly until, as I walked towards the mailroom, I glanced toward the front desk, where the office receptionist is usually seated. She greets teenagers and young adults as they arrive to see their adviser. But this time, for some reason she was not present, and I made eye contact with a young man standing there. His facial expression clearly signaled, “Can you help me?” I did not stop, instead proceeding into the mailroom, thinking. This is my day off. I hardly ever take a day off. I don’t want to get pulled into this situation, whatever it may be.
Then my conscience got the better of me. He’s probably just here to see his adviser, I reasoned. Let me ask him who he is here to see, and I will simply call up, it will take two seconds.
So I did that, I approached him and asked if I could help, and he surprised me by lifting up a shopping bag full of clothes. “We’re here to donate these,’’ he said. It was then that I noticed a young woman by his side.
“That’s so nice,” I replied. “Thank you very much. Will you please write down your name and address so we can properly thank you?” I passed over a sheet of paper.

After a few seconds he said, “You know, I used to come here for help.” He stood there, looking a little nervous. I then learnt he was homeless when he was young, and he got help from us. We provide clean water and food to the homeless people every day, and there will be a certain number of beds for them. After finishing his business, the young man took time to line up to get food and water, and was sometimes lucky enough to have a bed.
He pointed at the woman next to him and said, “That’s how I met my wife!” The woman was also homeless then. I shook their hands, thanked them profusely, and they left. There are so many lessons to be learnt from this, but the main one is really about paying it forward. What this young couple did reminded me of the whole idea that while it is important to be thankful to the people who helped you, it is equally important to pay it forward to help people who are now in a similar situation where you once were, even though you may not know them.

    6. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was my first day of school. I loved school: the smell of chalk and colored crayons and having my own desk that was just my size. However, there was one big problem with school: Mildred.
Daily when I walked the short distance home after school, Mildred would hit me and scare me. I was absolutely terrified of her. She had failed first grade and was a year older than me. Mildred didn’t have any friends, so she seemed to concentrate on making enemies. Because I was one of the smallest children in first grade, she had selected me as her number one enemy.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang each day, my heart started to pound and I blinked fast so I wouldn’t cry.
Pretty soon my mother figured out something was wrong at school. I didn’t want to tell her about Mildred. Mother continued to question me, and I finally sobbed out the whole story. I begged not to go to school and didn’t sleep much that night. The next morning she said, “Marion, I’m going to walk up the hill with you today. I believe we’ll see Mildred.” Mildred walked from way across down to school. She never bothered me on the way to school, only afterward.
“Oh, mama, please don’t do that! Don’t say anything to Mildred. It will just make her mad. Let me stay home by myself. Please, mama.”
“Hurry and get dressed, Marion.” Her voice was gentle, but quite firm.
    “Ple-e-ease, mama.”
“Trust, Marion. I have a plan.”
We bundled up against the bitter cold wind and stared out. Maybe we wouldn’t see Mildred, I hoped. But my mother had this confident look. I knew the look well, and I had a sinking feeling that we would see Mildred and that mother would use her “plan”.
Just as we were turning around at a corner when we spotted Mildred. We waited a few moments as she approached us. “Hello, Mildred.” my mother said.

    Paragraph 1:
Mildred stopped, frozen as still as a statue. Her hands and face were bright red and the oversized coat hung open with only two buttons. Mother stooped down, rapidly buttoning her coat. “I'm Marion's mother. I need your help, Mildred.” Mildred looked intently at my mother. “Marion doesn't have any sisters. She sort of needs a special friend at school. Would you be her friend?”
    Paragraph 2:
Mildred chewed on her bottom lip and then nodded. “Oh, thank you! I just know you are someone I can depend on.” Then she hugged Mildred long and hard. I found Mildred smiling! I'd never seen her smile before. We walked up the hill each day after school together, and pretty soon we were talking, laughing and sharing secrets. I started calling her “Mil”, and then others did too, even Miss Edna. She always sat with me at lunch. My mother usually included something in my lunch especially for Mil-even notes of gratitude. Mildred smiled a lot now. She was getting good grades too, and didn't stuff her papers inside her desk anymore. I knew my mother’s plan had worked and I’ve learned that the plan works in all kinds of impossible situations: "Love is patient and love never fails.”

Harry was afraid of the wind, I blew of his hat. I whistled under his door. It made the iron fence murmur scary music.
“How can anyone be afraid of the wind?” asked Harry's friend Antony many times. Harry shrugged. Antony always comforted him and encouraged him. Sometimes that made Harry feel better. But not for long.
On windy days Harry sod at his window and watched Antony riding his bike, whose hair flew in the wind. He watched his friend playing cheerfully in the wind, wishing he weren't afraid.
One day Antony came to Harry's house to play. “Look at my glider(滑翔机),” said Antony. “It does tricks and loop-de-loops when I fly it outside in the wind.” “Nice,” said Harry.
When clouds rolled in, the tree in front of Harry's house swung. A garbage can top clattered(发出撞击声) down the street. Antony couldn't wait to fly the glider outside and invited Harry to play together, but he refused.
Harry staved inside and played with his construction set. He pictured launching the glider with Antony. But when he imagined the wind blowing against his face and blowing off his hat, he shivered.
Harry drew pictures of Antony's glider lifting with the wind. Gradually, hearing the happy laughter and shouts of more children outside, he felt sad to be in his room while everyone else was there.
Harry began to make a kite. He took two sticks from his craft bin and crossed them. He tied them together and made a diamond shape with four more sticks. He glued the colored paper onto the sticks and attached a ball of string to make a rudder(方向舵). He held the kite up high, his twinkling eyes staring at it.

He pretended the kite was flying against the clouds. His cheeks glowed as he danced around the room. But after a while, he got tired of pretending. Outside the window Antony's glider was making brilliant circles, flying upside down, children's claps echoing. At the sight of this, Harry stopped, ducked his head and sighed. He was tired of feeling afraid. Suddenly a ripple of courage welling up from his heart, he wanted to step outside and fly the kite in the wind. He yelled to encourage himself, “I AM NOT AFRAID!”
Then Harry took his kite and went outside. The wind blowing on his face, he hesitated. At that moment, Antony’s spiraling glider landed beside his feet. “Come on, Harry!” Antony came rushing toward him and yelled in an exhilarated tone. Harry took a deep breath, summoned up the courage and joined him Harry tried to let his kite go, Antony standing behind to help him. Seeing the kite riding the wind, Harry couldn't contain his excitement and picked up his speed. The wind blew so hard that it blew off his hat, but surprisingly he didn't mind. Harry let out the string and the kite climbed higher, the kite's vivid colors sparkling in the sunlight.
