There was a taxi driver who was angry and wanted to finish his shift as soon as possible. When he arrived to pick up his last passenger of the day, he honked(鸣响)the horn, but no one came out of the apartment. Minutes later, he honked again, but still there was no reaction.

He decided to knock the door. A minute later, when the door finally opened, he saw a woman in her 90s, with a small suitcase, and an apartment with furniture covered in sheets and no decorative items anywhere.

Inside the car the woman gave him an address and asked him to drive through downtown. The taxi driver told her it wasn’t the quickest route, to which she replied she was in no hurry. “I’m on my way to a hospice,” she added. With tears in eyes, she explained she had no family left and, according to the doctors, she didn’t have very long left.

The driver decided to shut off the meter and ask her exactly what route she wanted to take. They drove through town for nearly two hours. The woman showed him every significant place in her life and shared some of her best memories.

When the sun began to set, the woman decided to go to the hospice. When they arrived, the woman asked how much she owed him. “Nothing,” replied the driver. He gave her a hug and she thanked him for giving her a moment of joy.

After leaving the hospice, he drove aimlessly, thinking what would have happened if he had left or if the woman had gotten a driver refusing to drive through downtown. He then realized that this had been the most important thing he had ever done and that the great moments are often the ones that seem small but are actually full of beauty and significance.

    4. Which word best describes the driver according to paragraph 1?

    A. Strict. B. Casual. C. Impatient. D. Ambitious.

5 What can we infer about the woman passenger?

    A. She took a shortcut to the hospice. B. She was unwilling to take the taxi.

    C. Her family refused to give her a ride. D. She may no longer return to her apartment.

    6. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. Refusing to charge the lady. B. Driving the lady along her route.

    C. Persuading the lady to be optimistic. D. Helping the lady overcome diseases.

    7. What does the author expect us to do in the text?

    A. Get rid of our problems. B. Learn to release our stress.

    C. Focus on our own memories. D. Put ourselves into others’ shoes.

    C

Magic is a form of entertainment that is based on pretending to do things that are impossible. The magician is a specially trained actor. He tries to make the audience believe that he has the power to do things which are against the laws of nature.

Magic shows are entertaining as long as the audience does not discover how the tricks are done. The magician usually depends on his skill with his hands, on his knowledge of psychology, and, sometimes, on mechanical devices. Since magic performance is meant to trick people, the use of psychology is important. The magician must keep people from noticing all the movements of his hands and from thinking about the secret parts of his equipment. He must also lead the audience to draw false conclusions. The magician’s success depends on the fact that many things seen by the eye are not the things that matter.

Two basic magic tricks are making objects seem to appear and making objects seem to disappear. A combination of these two tricks makes for some interesting effects. For example, the magician puts a small ball under one of several cups. The ball then seems to jump from one cup to another or to change colour. What actually happens is that the magician, employing quick hand movements or a mechanical device, hides one ball. While doing this he talks to the audience and waves a brightly coloured cloth with one hand. The audience is too busy watching the cloth and listening to the magician’s words to notice that his other hand is hiding the ball.

Another favourite trick is to cut or burn something, and then make it appear whole again. What actually happens is that the magician makes the cut or burned object disappear by quickly hiding it while the audience watches something else. Then he “magically” makes it appear whole again by displaying another object that has not been cut or burned.

    8. Which of the following is important for a successful magic trick?

    A. Moving stage equipment. B. Keeping the performance in secret.

    C. Applying high technology. D. Directing the audience’s attention.

    9. What does the underlined word “employing” mean in paragraph 3?

    A. Hiring. B. Using. C. Engaging. D. Moving.

    10. How does the author develop the last two paragraphs?

    A. By explaining a concept. B. By making a summary.

C By drawing comparisons. D. By providing examples.

    11. What’s the passage mainly about?

    A. The secrets behind the art of magic. B. The ways to be magicians.

    C. The attractions of the magic show. D. The talents of magicians.

    D

Tropical rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate, and according to a new report by Rainforest Foundation Norway, humans are to blame. The world’s dependence on coal, farming, soy, palm oil and mining has resulted in two-thirds of Earth’s tropical rainforests being completely destroyed, and the remaining ecosystems being put closer to a tipping point (临界点).

Tropical rainforests once covered 14.5 million square kilometers of Earth’s surface, but now, just one-third of that remains undamaged. Of the original area tropical rainforests once occupied, 34% is completely gone and 30% is suffering from degradation. All that remains is roughly 9.5 million square kilometers, and 45% of that is in a degraded (恶化) state, the report says.

Researchers blame human consumption for the loss. While agriculture has always been a driving factor of rainforest loss, the report said that energy consumption, international trade and the production of soy and palm oil, logging and mining have been the largest threats over the past century. A significant number of U. S. products rely on resources from tropical rainforests. The country heavily relies on palm oil, rubber and cocoa, all of which come from forests around the world. Oftentimes, these resources are harvested from illegally deforested lands.

Tropical rainforests are home to more than half of the Earth’s biodiversity and have more carbon in living organisms than any other ecosystem. Along with supporting significant animal life, tropical rainforests are also essential to slowing down global warming. “These highly specialized ecosystems are suffering from constant abuse, through our bottomless appetite for land and resources,” said Anders Krogh, who authored the report. “We expect that upcoming UN climate and biodiversity summits provide specific targets and measures to protect tropical rainforests.”

The researchers also believe that the loss of tropical rainforests puts the whole world at risk of future pandemics “Massive deforestation (毁林) is violating nature’s natural virus protection systems.” Krogh said. “The consequences of COVID-19 should bring rainforest protection to the top of the agenda of all policy makers and world leaders concerned about preventing the outbreak of new pandemics.”

    12. Why are the data listed in paragraph 2?

    A. To show the serious loss of tropical rainforest.

    B. To present the process of rainforest degradation.

    C. To stress the role of rainforests in the ecosystem.

    D. To explain the reason for the disappearance of rainforests.

    13. What leads to the decrease of rainforests?

    A. The traditional method of fanning.

    B. Global imbalance of international trade.

    C. The world’s much dependence on clean energy.

    D. Human unreasonable consumption of rainforest resources.

    14. Which one of the following will Anders Krogh agree with?

    A. The loss of rainforests will destroy future generations.

    B. Immediate action should be taken to protect rainforests.

    C. The disappearance of rainforests was caused by global warming.

    D. Politicians are concerned about preventing the outbreak of new pandemics.

    15. What can be the best title for the passage?

    A. Tropical Rainforests Are Declining

    B. Rainforests Slow down Global Warming

    C. Humans Are to Pay for the Loss of Rainforests

    D. World Leaders Are Acting to Protect Rainforests

If you continue thinking of the problem as a threat and view yourself as a failure or a weak person, you will not be able to deal with the problem.
