In the year-and-a-half since Broadway reopened, tourism and ticket sales have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. So, looking forward to spring 2023, you never know what’s going to hit or miss. Often all you can do when trying to predict what will be worth seeing is to look at who wrote the script and who’s directing and starring. Here are four Broadway and off-Broadway shows I’m keeping an eye on.

    Bad Cinderella

Imperial Theatre; begins previews February 17, opens March 23

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber brings his latest show, a contemporary retelling of the Cinderella story, to New York. Will Lord Lloyd Webber find success with this new musical?

    The Jungle

St. Ann’s Warehouse; begins performances February 18

This immersive production, first seen in 2018, puts the audience right inside the tents of a refugee (难民) camp in Calais, France. It tells the heart-breaking stories of refugees from the Middle East and Africa.

    Fat Ham

American Airlines Theatre; begins previews March 21, opens April 12

James Ijames’ Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy was a hit on a small stage in 2022. A retelling of Hamlet, set at a Black family cookout, it deals with questions of manliness and is both funny and joyous.

    Prima Facie

Golden Theatre; begins previews April 11, opens April 23

Emmy Award-winning actress Jodie Comer, who acts as a lawyer, appears in this one-person play by Suzie Miller, which was a hit in London. It will be exciting to see this actress in person.

1Which is put on show for the first time?

ABad Cinderella BThe Jungle CFat Ham DPrima Facie

2On which day can you enjoy a show with amusing plots?

    AFebruary18. BMarch 23. CApril 12. DApril 23.

Jim Glaub and Dylan Parker had just been handed the keys to their new Manhattan apartment on 22nd Street when the outgoing tenant (房客) said something curious, “Just so you know, there’s this thing where letters addressed to Santa come to the apartment. The previous tenants received the mail too. It has been coming for years and no one knows why.”

Glaub and Parker settled in to their new home, and for the first two years only a few letters from kids or parents asked “Santa” for gifts they could not otherwise afford. Then in the months leading to Christmas 2010, their mailbox was filled with letters to Santa every day. They responded to as many as they could, writing notes, even buying gifts. Glaub, of course, is not Santa. They could do only so much.

But one night, when he and Parker threw a 1960s—themed Christmas party, a solution appeared. Guests noticed the hundreds of letters they’d yet to act upon and asked about them. Glaub told them the story and his guests were intrigued. “A lot of people were like, ‘I’ll take a letter. I’ll satisfy it.’” And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street.

To spread the word, they started a website, miracleon22ndstreel. com, and a Facebook page. Working with other nonprofits that help those in need, they invited families from around the county to go online and request gifts for their children. Likewise, donors, also known as “elves,” can sign up to buy gifts for a child or family, accompanied by a signed note with Elf before their name, such as Elf Jim or Elf Jody.

Last year, Glaub and Miracle on 22nd Street helped more than 800 families. Glaub no longer wonders why the letters come to the apartment. Putting in the long hours to help the families is what it’s all about for him. “It’s part of Christmas for me,” he says, “It wouldn’t be Christmas without it.”

4What did the tenant think of receiving the letters in the apartment?

    AOdd. BComic. CExciting. DDisturbing.

5What can be implied about the couple in paragraph 2?

AThey got really bothered. BThey had tried their best.

CThey overcame the challenge. DThey were content with their new life.

6What does the underlined word “intrigued” mean in paragraph 3?

    AInterested. BRelieved. CPuzzled. DSurprised.

7What is the text mainly about?

AHow a volunteer organization is formed.

BHow Miracle on 22nd Street is operated.

CHow a couple deal with the letters to Santa.

DHow donors purchase gifts for families in need.

Not every architectural landmark is grand in scale, with splendid decorations, or amazing colors. Suzhou Gardens may just be the opposite.

When a group of monks during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) first constructed Lion Grove Garden, they may have just wanted to enjoy a quiet place, hidden away from urban noise, while in the following centuries, this charming garden - most notable for its waterside rockeries resembling the shape of lions—has attracted a constant stream of celebrity guests, who have left a long list of poems, paintings and historical anecdotes (轶事).

In recent years, nine of the best-known classical gardens of Suzhou, including Lion Grove Garden, Humble Administrator’s Garden and Great Wave Pavilion, were registered into the World Heritage List. As UNESCO remarks, “Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature (缩略图), is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens, which reflect the profound natural beauty in Chinese culture and inspire people to pursue harmony with the world.”

Nowadays, relevant administrations have been trying to restore the historical landscapes of Suzhou’s classical gardens. Consequently, last year, a new project was launched allowing tourists in small groups to reserve places to enter the garden in the early morning before the regular opening time. Their visit ended with them completing the last step in making a traditional folding fan, adding a poem about the garden on its surface. The experience was also regarded as a way to help people understand the wisdom, elegance and philosophical worldview of the ancient Chinese literati (文人).

The delicate beauty of the gardens still flows via the canals that snake across Suzhou. Hardly felt, their strength in shaping the city’s character seems to last forever.

8What’s the purpose of building the Lion Grove Garden?

    ATo share historical anecdotes.

    BTo attract celebrity guests.

    CTo enjoy the beautiful scenery.

DTo stay far from the madding crowd.

    9What do Suzhou Gardens show?

    ASplendid decorations.

    BGrand beauty.

    CHuman-nature harmony.

    DAmazing colors.

10What can we know about the project from Paragraph 4?

    AIt featured traditional Chinese elements.

BSmall groups without reservation were welcome.

CIts main aim was to help people approach poems.

DIt was launched when the gardens were open to the public.

11What can be the best title for the text?

ASuzhou Gardens, a place of national pride.

BSuzhou Gardens, a place with natural beauty.

CSuzhou Gardens, a place that shows the decorations and colors.

DSuzhou Gardens, a place that reflects the philosophy and culture.

由第二段中的“When a group of monks during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) first constructed Lion Grove Garden, they may have just wanted to enjoy a quiet place, hidden away from urban noise (元朝(1271-1368年),一群僧人第一次建造狮子林时,他们可能只是想享受一个远离城市噪音的安静地方)”可知,建造狮子林的目的是为了远离喧嚣的人群。

由第三段中的“Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature (缩略图), is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens, which reflect the profound natural beauty in Chinese culture and inspire people to pursue harmony with the world. (中国古典园林设计力求以微型形式再现自然景观,这在九座园林中得到了最好的诠释,这九座园林反映了中国文化中深厚的自然美,并激励人们追求与世界的和谐)”可知,苏州园林呈现出自然美,以及人与自然世界的融合。故选C

10A解析】推理判断题。由第四段中的“Their visit ended with them completing the last step in making a traditional folding fan, adding a poem about the garden on its surface. The experience was also regarded as a way to help people understand the wisdom, elegance and philosophical worldview of the ancient Chinese literati (文人). (游客的参观以他们完成制作传统折扇的最后一步——在折扇表面加上一首关于花园的诗而结束。这段经历也被视为帮助人们理解中国古代文人的智慧、优雅和哲学世界观的一种方式)”可知,游客在该项目中,观光以制作传统折扇和在扇面题诗而结束(有助于游客中国古代文人的智慧、优雅和哲学世界观),可得出该项目具有中国传统元素。故选A

Rapid deforestation (毁林) of the Amazon rainforest could influence the temperature and precipitation (降水,降水量) over the Tibetan plateau 15, 000 kilometers away.

Saini Yang at Beijing Normal University in China and her colleagues analyzed global climatological data from 1979 to 2019 to identify relations in temperature and precipitation between the Amazon rainforest and other areas. Such links are called “teleconnection1s”. They focused on the Amazon rainforest in particular because of its significance as a major carbon sink and as a climatic “tipping point” (爆发点) that could see forest turn to savannah (稀树草原) beyond a certain threshold (阈,界) of warming and human-driven deforestation.

The researchers found that since 1979, warm temperatures in the Amazon rainforest were related to warm temperatures over the Tibetan plateau and the West Antarctic ice sheet; more precipitation in the Amazon rainforest was associated with less precipitation in those regions. By analyzing changing temperatures in the regions between the Amazon rainforest and those distant areas, they were also able to trace the path through which energy or materials such as black carbon released in forest fires might spread through the atmosphere. Their analysis showed the route remained consistent under different future warming scenarios.

The collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet is a known tipping point. Melting snow on the Tibetan plateau is not, but the region is warming more rapidly than much of the rest of the globe, and changes to snow and ice there could have consequences for ecosystems and the billions of people that rely on its snowmelt for water, says Yang.

Victor Brovkin at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany says the teleconnections are an interesting find, but is skeptical that variability in the Amazon rainforest causes the changes elsewhere. He says the Amazon rainforest is too small an area to overcome the influence of the tropical oceans and the researchers don’t present a physical mechanism to explain any influence.

If the Amazon rainforest does have an influence on these regions, however, it could mean there is à higher risk that the Amazon rainforest tipping point might set others off, says Jonathan Donges-at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. “It adds an additional potential domino (多米诺骨牌) that can fall. ”

12Why was the Amazon rainforest the focus for Saini Yang’s research?

ABecause it played a role as a main carbon sink.

BBecause it was the most important carbon sink.

CBecause it was very likely to turn to savannah.

DBecause it was at a high risk of becoming a climatic “tipping point”.

13What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    AThe benefits of the research.

    BThe findings of the research.

CThe means of analyzing the data.

DThe results of the Amazon rainforest being deforested.

14Which of the following points may Saini Yang agree with?

AThe temperature of the Tibetan plateau changes the fastest.

BThe variability in the Amazon rainforest may not lead to changes elsewhere.

CThe more the Amazon rainforest rains, the less rainfall the Tibetan plateau may have.

DThe consequences of the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet are little-known.

15What can we learn about the Amazon rainforest from the last two paragraphs?

ATeleconnections have kept the researchers interested for a long time.

BThe Amazon rainforest tipping point is likely to set off those of other areas.

CThe findings of the research on the Amazon rainforest are controversial.

DThe Amazon rainforest is large enough to remove the influence of the tropical oceans.

根据第二段中的“They focused on the Amazon rainforest in particular because of its significance as a major carbon sink and as a climatic “tipping point” (爆发点) that could see forest turn to savannah (稀树草原) beyond a certain threshold (阈,界) of warming and human-driven deforestation. (他们特别关注亚马逊雨林,因为它是一个重要的碳汇,也是一个气候爆发点,超过一定的变暖和人为砍伐森林的阈值,森林就会变成大草原。)”可知,因为亚马逊雨扮演了主要碳汇的角色,所以杨赛霓教授的研究的焦点是亚马逊雨林,故选A

13B解析】主旨大意题。根据第三段“The researchers found that since 1979, warm temperatures in the Amazon rainforest were related to warm temperatures over the Tibetan plateau and the West Antarctic ice sheet; more precipitation in the Amazon rainforest was associated with less precipitation in those regions. By analyzing changing temperatures in the regions between the Amazon rainforest and those distant areas, they were also able to trace the path through which energy or materials such as black carbon released in forest fires might spread through the atmosphere. Their analysis showed the route remained consistent under different future warming scenarios.(研究人员发现,自1979年以来,亚马逊雨林的温暖温度与青藏高原和南极西部冰盖的温暖温度有关;亚马逊雨林降水越多,这些地区降水越少。通过分析亚马逊雨林和这些遥远地区之间的温度变化,他们还能够追踪森林火灾释放的能量或物质(如黑碳)可能通过大气传播的路径。他们的分析表明,在不同的未来变暖情景下,这一路线保持一致。)”可知,第三段主要谈论了研究结果。故选B

14C解析】细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The researchers found that since 1979, warm temperatures in the Amazon rainforest were related to warm temperatures over the Tibetan plateau and the West Antarctic ice sheet; more precipitation in the Amazon rainforest was associated with less precipitation in those regions. (研究人员发现,自1979年以来,亚马逊雨林的温暖温度与青藏高原和南极西部冰盖的温暖温度有关;亚马逊雨林降水越多,这些地区降水越少。)” 可知,Saini Yang会同意亚马逊雨林降雨越多,青藏高原的降雨量就越少的观点,故选C

15C解析】推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Victor Brovkin at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany says the teleconnections are an interesting find, but is skeptical that variability in the Amazon rainforest causes the changes elsewhere. (德国马克斯·普朗克气象研究所的维克多·布罗夫金说,这种远程关联是一个有趣的发现,但他怀疑亚马逊雨林的变化会导致其他地方的变化。)”和根据最后一段“If the Amazon rainforest does have an influence on these regions, however, it could mean there is à higher risk that the Amazon rainforest tipping point might set others off, says Jonathan Donges-at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. “It adds an additional potential domino (多米诺骨牌) that can fall.

Tips to Learn Any Foreign Language

    Know your motivation

It might sound obvious. But if you don’t have a good reason to learn a language, you are less likely to stay motivated in the long run. But wanting to impress Chinese-speakers with your English isn’t the best reason. ____16____. No matter what your motivation is, once you’ve decided on a language, it’s vital to commit.

    ____17____

The key to learning as quickly as a child may be simply to take on certain childlike attitudes: a desire to play in the language and a willingness to make mistakes. It means being ready to put yourself in potentially embarrassing situations. ____18____ But it’s the only way to develop and improve your foreign language.

    Have fun with it

Think of some fun ways to practise your new language: make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic picture, write a poem or simply practise by listening and copying songs. ____19____ _, chances are that you are going to give up eventually!

We have one more language-learning tip before we go. Remember that the best possible outcome of speaking a language is communicating with others. Being able to have a simple conversation is a huge reward in itself. Reaching milestones like that early on will make it easier to stay motivated and keep practising. And don’t worry about your current speaking ability! ____20____, if you begin any interaction with “I have just started to learn this language and I’d like to practise with you.”

    AAct like a kid

    BThis can be scary

    CLeave your comfort zone

DTrying to know English culture is a better one

EIf you can’t find a way to have fun with a new language

FMost people will be patient, encouraging and happy to help

GYou’re learning a language to be able to use when you go abroad

上文“But wanting to impress Chinese-speakers with your English isn’t the best reason.

由下文“The key to learning as quickly as a child may be simply to take on certain childlike attitudes: a desire to play in the language and a willingness to make mistakes. (像孩子一样快速学习的关键可能只是采取一些孩子般的态度:渴望学习语言,愿意犯错)”可知,下文作者建议读者要像小孩一样学习,A选项表现得像个孩子切题。故选A

18B解析】由上文“The key to learning as quickly as a child may be simply to take on certain childlike attitudes: a desire to play in the language and a willingness to make mistakes. It means being ready to put yourself in potentially embarrassing situations. (像孩子一样快速学习的关键可能只是采取一些孩子般的态度:渴望学习语言,愿意犯错。这意味着准备好让自己陷入潜在的尴尬境地)”可知,作者建议读者要像小孩一样学习,愿意犯错,准备好让自己陷入潜在的尴尬境地,承接上文,B选项这可能很可怕是这样做法的后果。故选B

19E解析】由小标题Have fun with it (有其乐趣)”和上文“Think of some fun ways to practise your new language: make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic picture, write a poem or simply practise by listening and copying songs.

20F解析】由上文“And don’t worry about your current speaking ability! (不要担心你现在的说话能力)”和下文“if you begin any interaction with “I have just started to learn this language and I’d like to practise with you.”(如果您以我刚刚开始学习这门语言,我想和您一起练习开始任何互动)”可知,作者认为无需担心新语言说得不好,因为和别人说明情况,大多数人是乐于帮忙的,F选项大多数人都会耐心、鼓励并乐于帮助切题。故选F

In order to improve students’ awareness of doing physical exercise and protecting the environment, the Student Union arranged a Plogging in the East Lake Park last Friday.

As scheduled, an instructor introduced the history of this activity in the first place. Then, students were divided into different groups based on the class number. After that, ploggers stopped to pick up any litter they saw along their route as well as put it into the bags while running. At last, the activity was successfully held with the path becoming cleaner.

Personally, we have benefited a lot from this activity. Plogging not only does good to our physical health but also enables us to attach great importance to environment protection.

Palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old Katrina began to get nervous, the way she always did in new surroundings. She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of the car’s cool air. “The aquarium won’t be crowded, I bet, and people are gonna notice me. I hate wearing this prosthesis leg (假肢).” She felt tears pinprick behind her eyes. “Not being normal is the worst.”

Entering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, around a comer of a tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin with stump (假肢) instead of a tail?” she asked an aquarium staff. He nodded. “Yes, that’s Winter. She’s a very special dolphin.” “What happened to her?” “This girl dolphin was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail,” Katrina caught her breath. “She’s just like me. She’s just like me.” “But she struggled to survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail part of the day to help her swim like a dolphin’s supposed to swim.” the staff continued, “Every day, Winter shows us anything is possible if we believe.”

Katrina felt her heartstring was touched. She waved at Winter. Looking at Katrina, Winter raised her flipper (), came to her and lifted her head. “She’s swimming right into my arms,” Katrina said tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to Katrina: We’re the same.

Back home, all Katrina talked about was Winter. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take her back to Clearwater.

Unfortunately, another blow hit Katrina. She fell on the hardwood floor at home and broke her other leg. Katrina was in constant leg nerve pain. After a through examination, the doctor explained bad news that she would need another surgery on her leg. Years of a living hell came back to her.

She started fearing surgery again and refused to take any.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Katrina’s mom decided to take her back to Clearwater.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Finally came the day when Katrina was in the hospital again.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Katrina’s mom decided to take her back to Clearwater. On arriving at Clearwater, Katrina can’t wait to see Winter, the lovely dolphin that comforted her and boosted her mood. As Katrina’s mother pushed the wheelchair to Winter, she raised her flipper, came to her and lifted her head. Katrina couldn’t hold back her excitement. Looking at the girl, Winter seemed to say “Go and take the surgery.” Katrina absolutely knew what that caring eyes were conveying, so she decided to keep a more optimistic state of mind.

Finally came the day when Katrina was in the hospital again. Though feeling nervous and afraid of the pain the surgery might bring, Katrina would face it bravely. The operation was a success. Her mother took her to Clearwater the day she was discharged from hospital. Inspired by Winter’s swimming like a normal dolphin, Katrina practiced hard to walk. Her confidence has been improved as she gradually recovered. Katrina has no idea what the future holds but she will do anything to have a better look at this wonderful world.
