Better way for us to fly
NASA developed a plane that makes flying more environmentally friendly. The X-Plane is an experimental all-electric aircraft. Instead of fuel-powered engines (引擎), the X-Plane gets its power from batteries. The plane is also quieter than fuel-powered planes, as its electric parts change the way it sounds. It has 14 electric motors and propellers (旋桨), allowing it to fly more efficiently (高效地). It began to be tested in 2020.

It was long thought that keeping potted (盆栽的) plants in your home can make the air fresher.
New research says that this is not true. US researcher Michael Waring reviewed a NASA study that said that potted plants could remove pollution from the air. However, the NASA experiment was done in a closed room, which is different from a typical home. Keeping a couple of windows open is a better way to keep the air fresh in your home.
New way to fight germs
Researchers in Hong Kong have found a way to stop superbugs, which are bacteria (细菌) that are highly resistant (有抵抗力的) to most medicine. The researchers have created a new class of antibiotics (抗生素). 3、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)Chang’e 5 completed its task successfully in 23 days, not only did it return with valuable rock and soil samples from the moon, but also brought back a group of seeds that traveled the furthest in China. More than 30 kinds of seeds, including that of rice, oats etc., were placed inside the Chang’e 5 spacecraft and went around the moon for about 15 days.
Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after the task. This task offered good opportunities to scientists, which helped them to deepen their studies on the effect of cosmic rays (宇宙射线) on the growth and development of life on Earth.
Space-based mutation breeding (太空诱变育种) refers to the process of placing seeds in the environment such as microgravity (微重力), vacuums (真空) and cosmic radiation (宇宙辐射) during a spaceflight and then sending them back to Earth for further study and planting. Scientists study and examine several generations of plants grown from seeds which went into the space and study their changes-some are desirable while others are bad and negative. Those with good changes will be kept for further research, and will be introduced to farmers after getting permission.
Space breeding (育种) can make the seeds change faster than the experiments on the earth and can bring about some wonderful results. Compared with the traditional methods, space-developed methods can make the seeds grow much better, such as having shorter growth periods and having more power to fight against diseases and insect.
China did its first space breeding experiment in 1987, using a satellite to carry seeds into space. Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in China that have been allowed to be planted across the country from grains to vegetables and fruits.

5、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon (煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or, my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.

6、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)I don’t remember the exact date I met Marty for the first time. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. I quickly looked toward the cashier, who was busy receiving money from customers.
He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes, I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the goods they picked out. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond(回应)to what they had said and talk with them briefly(简要地).
I thought it was strange. This old cashier seemed sincere about wanting to know how people were feeling. When customers handed money to him, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change. Then magic happened. He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended(伸展)his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.” The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless.
Now it was my turn. I quickly looked down at the name tag on his red waistcoat and it read, “Marty.”

8、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)Cats are one of the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising that there are many American slang(俚语)expressions about cats. Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries(金丝雀). If someone looks very proud and satisfied with himself, we can say “he looks like the cat that ate the canary”.
Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it has caught. So if you “play cat and mouse” with someone, it means that you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a girl might offer something sweet to her little brother, and then take it away when he reaches for it.
Americans might say that something is “the cat’s miaow” or “the cat’s pajamas” to describe something that is the best or finest. “A copycat” is someone who acts just like someone else or copies another person’s work. “A fat cat” is a person with a lot of money.
If you tell someone about something that is supposed to be a secret, but he tells it to others, we say, “you let the cat out of the bag”. If you are not able to speak or answer a question, someone might ask you if “the cat has got your tongue(舌头)”。
Have you ever watched children in a classroom when their teacher is away for a few minutes? “When the cat’s away, the mice will play” means people sometimes act badly when there is no supervision(监管). You may have heard the expression “curiosity(好奇心)killed the cat”. This means caring too much about things that are not your business might cause problems.
If you have ever had cats as pets, you may know it is difficult to train them or to get them to do something. Cats are not like sheep or cows that can be made to move along as a group. So we say a difficult or impossible job is like “herding cats”.
34.If someone has just won a prize and thinks highly of himself, we can say “________”.
A.he is the cat eating small birds B.he is like the cat that looks very proud
C.he likes cats catching canaries D.he looks like the cat that ate the canary
35.In which of the following situations do we use the expression “let the cat out of the bag”?
A.Someone asked a lady about her age and weight and it made her get mad.
B.Someone has a broken leg, but he wants to swim across the Yangtze River.
C.Someone promised to keep something that you told him to himself but failed to do so.
D.Someone buys the same clothes and gets the same haircut as a famous movie star does.
36.The passage is most probably taken from ________.
A.a scientific research paper B.a language book
C.a magazine of funny jokes D.a news website
9、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)Over the past year, COVID-19 has forced people to give up most of their travel plans. Now in a world with social distancing and limited flights, what will travel be like? Airbnb, a US-based home-sharing company, has used surveys to predict trends (预测趋势).
___________________
In China, 76 percent of those surveyed want to “travel to suburban (近郊的) areas” or even “move to the countryside” in the coming year. In the US, 62 percent expressed interest in taking a vacation that is closer to home in a more natural environment, such as a tree house or cottage (乡间小屋).
Remote (远程的) working and traveling
Because of COVID-19, remote working and schooling became a lifestyle for many people in 2020. Airbnb says this will blur (模糊) the line between working and traveling. On Airbnb, people who have the chance to work from anywhere are actively booking longer stays (two week-plus trips). They prefer small-to-mid-size cities with natural environments and more open spaces. In China, 64 percent of people are considering “going to a new place to live and work remotely”, or “traveling while on a business trip”.
Staying more connected
Pod travel, in which people choose to travel together as a family or a group of friends, will become a trend. This way, people can stay safe and reduce the risk of socializing with others. On Airbnb, more than half of the trips that are being planned for 2021 include three or more travelers.

10、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbors, I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play; …
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app, appreciating other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary (周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.” On December 31, I wrote my last card to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude.

A.writing thank-you notes B.putting the phone away
C.taking the train back home D.raising money for charity

A.photos B.family C.holidays D.community
45.What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage?
A.Many thanks from her neighbors. B.More time to appreciate her own life.
C.More help from people around her. D.Happy moments to be with her friends.

11、(2022·湖北武汉·统考二模)My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can’t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He’s busy so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is by no means the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there’re lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.
Firstly, it’s better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a goodnight’s sleep.
One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world--I would often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling--you really can be inside someone else’s head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you’re waking up, going to bed, eating too much, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!

Al-Ansi expects that Yemen and China will work together to set up centers and schools for teaching the Chinese language in Yemen so that many young Yemenis can learn. “I hope that a branch of the Confucius Institute (孔子学院) could be built in Yemen to teach the language and spread the Chinese culture and language,” he said.

Singing in Our MasksOnline rehearsals (排练), singing and dancing in masks. This is what students from Bemidji High School’s all-girl show choir (合唱团) did this year. The pandemic didn’t stop them from doing what they love.
The choir La Voce Ballo (LVB) was set up in 2004. If you walk into the choir room, you’ll surely see mask-covered smiles and girls braiding (编辫子) each other’s hair. “We’re a big sisterhood, like a big family,” said LVB directer Emily Paine.
Paine said she feels proud about the creative way the girls found to enjoy themselves during the pandemic. For example, they set up a computer in the middle of the choir room to do online rehearsals. Half of the students come in person and the other half join online.
The hardest part was that they couldn’t really practice singing all together. “Once we got back together, it was like, ‘Oh, it’s kind of bad,’ because we were all singing differently,” said choir member Hailie Thompson.
Another major difference is the mask requirement. Paine said performing with masks is “interesting” because “so much of what we do is facial. And so I’m like, ‘use your eyebrows’, ‘use your hands more’,” she said with a laugh.
The group is planning a 20-minute online live show in April. The pandemic will be a theme running throughout the show. Beginning with Into the Unknown from Disney’s Frozen 2, it will then move into What About Us by Pink and close with Not the End of the World by Katy Perry.

15、(2021·湖北武汉·统考二模)Every year, wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest land. Homes are damaged, and thousands of people die. Smokejumpers help to stop this.
Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighter. They jump from planes or are lowered by helicopters into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, such as the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading or to slow its progress until full, ground-based firefighters arrive. Using basic equipment such as shovels and axes, smokejumpers clear land of burnable material, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them, too, but only a limited amount.
Although the majority of smokejumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors are height and weight. Smokejumpers employed in the United States, for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilograms so they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. Smokejumpers must be also capable of surviving in the wildness. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As a 28-year-old Russian smokejumper Alexi Tishin says, “This is the best job for tough guys.”

71.In Alexi Tishin’s opinion, smokejumpers do the job ________.

18、(2020·湖北武汉·统考二模)I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my parents were very busy. And for my generation, we didn’t have the internet. In order to entertain myself, I found pens and paper, and I just started drawing.
At that time, I thought of drawing just as a hobby. But I was tired of studying for school exams. I wanted to do something creative. One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I could do what I love for a living? I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends studied art in the United States. She advised me to go to the Rhode Island School of Design(RISD). That was the only school I applied to after I graduated from high school.
Luckily, I was accepted into the RISD.There were new skills to learn every day. At first, I was a little confused. I tried many different things. Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me to find my own style.
Now, I’ve been working as a full-time illustrator( 插 画 师 ) for ten years. I’ve drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I’ve also worked with companies like McDonald’s and Apple. Some clients(客户) keep coming back to me. They love my style.
When I get an assignment( 任 务 ), I read it over a lot of times. I try to work out the most important message that I need to include in my work. Then, I forget about the assignment for a while— the best idea often pops up when I am not thinking too hard.

19、(2020·湖北武汉·统考二模)Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes. So in 2007, the city began a scheme(计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib scheme(bicycle freedom), people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only 1 euro a day or 29 euros a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kilograms). They are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 metro stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this — not even in France. Many years ago, Lyon started a free bicycle scheme. However, not everybody in Paris thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle; they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all of our traffic problems, of course. But it might reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. Everyone knows about global warming. We know this is partly because rainforests are disappearing, but it’s also because there’s so much pollution in the world. We can help improve the situation right here. The Velib bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
“There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities,” the spokesman added. “But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise. The problems in our environment will only get worse.”
87.How did Paris improve the situation of its traffic problem?
A.It built many bicycle stations. B.It is renting heavy bicycles to visitors.
C.It sold more bicycles to people. D.It is providing shared bikes for people.
88.How much will you have to pay if you use the bike for 45 minutes?
A.29 euros. B.1.5 euros. C.1 euro. D.Nothing.
89.According to the city spokesman, which of the following statements is true?
A.Traffic is not the only cause of global warming.
B.There aren’t any solutions to the city’s traffic problems.
C.Riding bikes is a perfect way to solve pollution problems.
D.It’s better to drive a car than to ride a bike to travel across the city.
90.What of the following is NOT a way to deal with global warming?
A.Using bicycles often. B.Protecting the rainforests.
C.Reducing factory fumes. D.Traveling across a city by car.
91.Which of the following may be a suitable title for the passage?
