2、(2022·湖北武汉·统考模拟预测)When Emily Cummins was four years old, her grandfather gave her a hammer. She loved using it, and started to learn how to make toys from old things that nobody used any more.
When she was a teenager, she was very creative and always thought a lot about making inventions to help other people. Emily’s grandfather had an illness. He had a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had difficulty getting toothpaste (牙膏) out of the tube. She made an invention that helped him with this, and won the Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser (自动取物器).
A few years later, Emily learnt about the serious water shortage in some African countries. The women and children there often walk many kilometers a day to get water for their villages. They usually put the buckets on their heads. Therefore, they have to walk carefully so as not to spill (溅出) the water. Emily’s invention is a simple water carrier. It makes it possible for the women to transport up to five buckets each time. Besides, it is easy for them to repair the water carrier when it is broken as it is made of wood.
Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity, but only needs the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who use it to keep milk, food and medicines cool.
Emily is now a young woman. She is the winner of several prizes for her inventions. She was named one of the world’s top ten young people. 6、(2022·湖北武汉·统考模拟预测)Already the fastest Asian sprinter (短跑选手)of all time, Chinese athlete Su Bingtian wanted to be faster. He ran into the record books at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games when he became the first Chinese to reach the men’s 100-meter final at an Olympics, setting a new Asian record on the way.
The 32-year-old shocked the world when he ran his personal best of 9.83 seconds in his semifinal(半决赛)to qualify fastest for the final. But about six months later, he did get a call. His bone marrow matched a patient in Virginia, a girl named Eleanor with a rare disease. She’d hardly left her house, except to travel to the hospital. As the days passed, her condition had become only more serious and she would die without the transplant (移植).

9、(2022·湖北武汉·统考模拟预测)Being an orphan (孤儿) is difficult; however, being an animal orphan can be deadly.
This season, the Volunteers for Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Locust Valley took in six young red-tailed hawks (鹰). If we could get these birds back with their parents, they would have a better chance of surviving. However, we couldn’t find their nests or parents.
But there was another way to help them: foster (寄养的) parenting. But we must place the orphans with other adult pairs before nesting season ended in early July. It’s not always easy. Hawk nests are often 40 or 50 feet high in trees. What’s more, not all birds will accept foster chicks. So we paid close attention to the research by experts before moving chicks.
That day, we happily knew of a nest that was still active at Bethpage State Park! There was one chick in the nest. And the young bird was going to fly but was still in the nest and being fed.
So we decided to move one of our orphan birds. I drove the bucket truck to the nest tree; Lauren, my workmate, held our chick. And up we three went in the bucket. We worked fast, for the wild parents might be back soon, and the female hawk could be aggressive!
To make sure the adults had accepted their new child, I came by later in the day and the next morning. Oh, they had! The chick was just fed up and the adult female hawk sat nearby, staring at me closely.

Labor Education
Recently, the Ministry of Education has released the new curriculum standard for labor education in compulsory (义务) education. China’s public schools will soon ask students to put down their books and electronic devices and pick up brooms and kettles. The standard has made labor education an independent course and students will take courses on labor skills at least once a week starting from the next term.

Have you grown taller and stronger? On May 3, the Ministry of Education brought out the results of the eighth national health survey for students from elementary school through college and university. 11、(2022·湖北武汉·统考模拟预测)On a recent Saturday morning, an excited crowd gathered together on San Francisco’s waterfront. They were watching in amazement as bubble (气泡) artist Kurth Reis slowly drew a large bubble from his bucket (桶) and released it into the air. Several minutes later, the bubble suddenly popped. A little girl in the crowd jumped and clapped. She turned to Reis, eager for another show. The “bubble man” had succeeded once again in bringing a little bit of joy to others.
The 49-year-old traveled a rocky path to his new “job”. In 2018, Reis, then a deliveryman, had a serious motorcycle accident. The man had several operations. 12、(2022·湖北武汉·统考模拟预测)From 40 to 300 Million
It was 2011. I was working in the local government of Perth, Western Australia. One day, I visited a recycling factory. There, I was shown how my city’s waste was sorted and how a portion of it would then get sent off for recycling. It was a complex(复杂的) and energy-intensive(耗能的)process.
I never seriously considered starting a global movement, but after that visit, I really wanted to do something for the environment. I tried to cut out single-use plastics for an entire calendar month in July--and encouraged my friends to do so, too.
Times have certainly changed. If I had started “Plastic Free July” last year, I would have been one of the many people raising awareness(意识)about plastic waste. But 11 years ago, nobody was talking about this problem. When I first asked for a drink without a straw(吸管), the waiter looked at me as if I was an alien. Now, I can easily buy a bamboo toothbrush at my local supermarket.
The same goes for participation(参与)levels. In the first year, there were just 40 of us in Perth. The challenge turned out to be far harder than I had thought. But by doing it together and sharing tips, we managed to reach our goals. Over the years, more and more people have joined our group. Last year, over 300 million people from 177 countries took part in “Plastic Free July”. As ordinary people, we can’t do everything, and certainly not all at once. However, there is always something that we can do. Start, for example, by just cutting out non-reusable plastic water bottles. Get this good habit in place and then take on the next challenge.

A.Because the straw was made of colorful plastic.
B.Because she didn’t have enough money with her.
