上海黄浦区2020-2022年中考英语二模试题-05阅读理解 一、阅读单选(2022·上海黄浦·统考二模)These days, more and more people are getting the latest news from a screen rather than a paper. Yet many people still find it exciting to open a freshly printed newspaper to discover what’s in it. Scanning through a copy of the morning paper has become an irreplaceable part of their day. One of the most popular dailies in the United States is The New York Times. Every night, the paper gets printed at 26 plants across the country. College Point, built in 1997, is the biggest among them. It prints 1.7 million copies of The New York Times every week.If you ever have a chance to visit College Point, you will be impressed by many things. The first among them is perhaps the paper rolls. Each of them is half as heavy as a car (that is, about 900 kilograms). They are moved from the storage to the printing presses with the help of three robotic arms. There are also 30,000 liters (升) of black ink and 9,500 liters of colored ink. Trucks deliver ink to the plant every week.Finished newspaper pages are sent digitally from the newsroom to the plant. They are then burned (刻) with lasers onto thin aluminum (铝制的) sheets called plates. There are seven printing presses at College Point. Each of them is several stories tall. During a print run, they can print as many as 80,000 newspapers per hour. Pressmen would carefully adjust the presses before they place the plates on the machines. Electricians and machinists are also on hand during this setup to solve any problems that may occur. The noise of the running presses is awful. Each press is shut down for one shift (轮班) each week. Press staff will then climb inside to maintain (保养) the machine’s key parts.Sometimes, news breaks during a press run. If it’s important enough, the newsroom will call to “Stop the presses!” Often, the copies that have already been printed won’t be thrown away, but the rest of the night’s run will be based on the updated version.Usually, all print runs of The New York Times are completed by 3 a.m. Maintenance and electrical teams will then make preparations for the next shift. I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation, but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have picked up many important skills through this job.I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team. I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Talking to strangers was one of my fears. But I gathered my courage and did it. I talked to the students, the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills. In journalism, everything has to be based on facts. As a student journalist, I have learned to do research and to think critically about what I read. Discovering the facts is important when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an increasingly useful skill in everyday life.As a student journalist, I always know that I have a lot to learn. I’m never afraid of asking people for feedback (反馈意见). I have learned how not to take negative (负面的) feedback personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. (2021·上海黄浦·统考二模)Does the music we listen to affect us in one way or another? The following questions and answers may give us some ideas. CAN MUSIC HELP US SLEEP?Obviously, yes! In a study, music was shown to cure insomnia (the condition of being unable to sleep). Over 80% of the people taking part in the study became better sleepers after three weeks of listening to classical music at bedtime. In another study, half of the people over the age of 60 who had difficulty falling asleep reported that they became good sleepers after a few weeks. So, if you’re battling to fall asleep, make yourself a 45-minute playlist of slow, calming music. CAN IT TAKE PAIN AWAY?Well, maybe not totally, but music has been shown to help us feel better. One experiment asked people to hold their hands in freezing cold water. The people who were listening to music could handle the pain for longer, especially if they got to choose the music themselves. The same was found at dentists’ rooms-patients felt less pain if they got to choose the music they listened to. CAN MUSIC MAKE US ACT DIFFERENTLY?For sure! Think about the music you hear when you’re at the shops or at a restaurant. Studies show that playing slow music at a restaurant makes you eat slower. The pace of music in a shopping center determines (decides on) how fast people walk-you take more time to browse (look at things in a shop) if the music is calmer. Some studies have even shown that music can influence what you buy. One test done by psychologists in England in 1999 changed the background music near displays of German and French wines. When they played German music, the German wine sold twice as much. When French music was used, the French wine sold five times better!19.Music affects us in many ways except in _______.A.sleep B.study C.senses D.behaviour20.________ music may help people who have problems in falling asleep.A.Loud B.Dance C.Classical D.Pop21.The underlined word “handle” is closest in meaning to ________.A.keep off B.break down C.focus on D.deal with22.From the third question and answer, we can learn that _______.A.fast music make people eat more B.loud music is popular in the shopping centerC.German wines sell better than French wines D.music can change our way of eating and shopping23.The text above is written to ________.A.tell people how to create music B.describe different kinds of musicC.introduce the effect of music D.test people’s understanding of music24.In which section of a magazine can you find this text?A.Book club. As usual, I was waiting to pick up my mom at the school parking lot. Suddenly, a ball rolled into the parking lot and stopped in front of me. I looked around and waited for someone to come and collect it, but no one showed up.Just when I was about to pick up the ball, I saw two kids racing towards me. “Pass it to me!” One of them shouted. And so I did. They got the ball, quickly thanked me and then went back along their way.I was curious about where they were from. With plenty of time on my hands, I decided to quietly follow them to their “paradise.” And there it was—in the school playground, a score of children were laughing, chasing balls or making fun of their friends. They were really having a good time! This reminded me of the carefree days of my childhood. Back then, lunchtime meant home-cooked food that had been lovingly prepared by my mom, not an oily, ready-made lunch from the staff canteen. The final exams were the only thing I had to worry about (in fact, my mom was even more worried about them than I was). The sharing of a new comic was the biggest deal of the month. Praise from my teachers seemed like a lifetime achievement award.Life has just moved on. Almost ten years have passed since my college graduation. Many more people have entered my life, but few of them have created memories as sweet as my school friends had. If I were given the chance to talk to these kids in the playground, I would say, “________.”31.What was the author doing when the ball rolled into the parking lot?_______________________________________________________________________________________________ .32.What made the author think of his school days?_______________________________________________________________________________________________ .33.Who was responsible for the author’s lunch when he was a student?_______________________________________________________________________________________________ .34.How did the author probably feel whenever he was praised by his teachers?_______________________________________________________________________________________________ .35.When did the author graduate from college?_______________________________________________________________________________________________ .36.What do you think the author would have said to the kids if he had been given a chance to do so? For the past year, I have been helping my parents manage a motel (a small hotel) in Clifton, California. We have made it our home, from the towels we carefully fold each and every day to the customers we call family. I usually help the customers to check in and out at the front desk. But the motel is not ours. It belongs to a man named Mr. Sung, who is unkind and selfish. My parents think that working for Mr. Sung is the only way, but I don’t think so. At night, I dreamed of a better life. I dreamed of owning a motel one day. Sadly, we have no money to buy a motel of our own. What are the chances of actually winning a motel?Well, maybe all our hopes and dreams don’t have to disappear. I am writing to you because something has happened here at Maple Motel. Mr. Sung is selling the motel! He is selling it at a low price because he’s tired of running a motel. We’re eager to buy it from him and we are looking for investors (投资人). If you would like to invest, please let me know. You can contact me at my telephone number — 6253908 any time.It wouldn’t be a donation. You would be one of the owners in the future. Whenever a customer comes to stay at the motel, part of the money would go to you. You might be asking yourself, “Why should I invest in a motel from a 10-year-old?” You can trust me because our dreams will come true for three reasons:1. I know what I’m doing. I know every corner of this motel like the back of my hand because I’ve lived and worked here for almost a year.2. I love what I’m doing. I’m very proud of my work. Every day, I check people in at the front desk. The customers like me because I treat them like family members.3. No investment is too small. Even if all you have are some extra pennies and nickels lying around, we’ll take them. I look forward to hearing from you.Yours truly Lucy Wong37.Maple Motel means a lot to Lucy Wong and her parents, doesn’t it?____________________________________________38.What does Lucy Wong do in the motel?____________________________________________39.Why is Mr. Sung selling the motel at a low price?____________________________________________40.How can people reach Lucy Wong?____________________________________________41.Why does Lucy Wong write this letter?____________________________________________42.What might be the third reason Lucy gives in her letter? I said sorry to him and he said, “Excuse me, too, I wasn’t even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around. I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying. That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself — pink, yellow, and your favourite blue.”When I heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient. I felt sad and tears began to fall.I quietly went to Betty’s bed, “Wake up, my dear,” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them, especially the blue.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated(对待)you that way today.” And she whispered(悄声说), “Mommy, that’s okay — I still love you anyway.” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn’t realize how important family life was.
