You're never too young to start being charitable. It doesn't have to be a grand gesture, just something as simple as a lemonade stand.
But sometimes even the smallest gestures can end up becoming a rather big deal. And one perfect example of this is a neighborhood lemonade stand in Peoria, Illinois, which really took off.
It started out when a group of neighborhood kids in the Knolls neighborhood got together in order to participate in a fundraiser to help raise money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The children got busy selling lemonade and other treats all throughout the week- end, and their hard work paid off. In total, they were able to make more than $3, 500 for the good cause.
But this charitable lemonade stand isn't in its first year. In fact, it has been several years in the making, all because of one mom's actions. Suzanne Miller has been participating in charity races for the hospital for years, and because of her actions, her kids wanted to join in her fundraising. Hence, the lemonade stand was started.
As Miller shared, “The first year we did it, we raised $220, and we thought that was amazing. Each year, it got bigger and bigger. ”
But it's not just the profits that have increased over the years, so have the volunteers. This year, Miller's kids were joined by her neighbor Leslie Rothan's three kids in running the lemonade stand.
Miller posted to the Internet, “The lemonade stand for St. Jude that our neighbors hos- ted this weekend raised $3, 515 and donated it to my run goal. I can not find the words to tell you how I feel. It's absolutely incredible to celebrate this way. "

Bilinguals (双语者)are smarter, says science. But the idea is relatively new. Up until the 1970s, most educators had believed that learning two languages at the same time would confuse children and slow their cognitive (认知的)growth.
Science disagreed with these opinions, says Ellen Bialystok, a professor of psychology. The arrival of new technology in the 1970s allowed scientists a new way to investigate how different brains process language.
Bialystok has been researching the bilingual brain for decades. She firmly believes bilinguals aren't smarter than the single-language learners, but bilingual brains differ in their use of executive (执行)function-a system that both helps the brain access particular regions or memories and allows a person to switch between tasks.
Contrary to media reports, executive function is not the same as intelligence, Bialystok adds. Even if the relationship between bilingualism and actual intelligence is unclear, executive function can help people do a lot of things that may make them seem smarter, such as doing more things at the same time and cancelling out things that take their attention away.
Many people believe that knowing at least one other language makes it easier to learn a new one, and cognitive function may play a part in that-the equivalent (等同物)of good study habits for your brain. But Bialystok thinks cognitive function has less impact on language learners than the similarities between languages' structure and vocabulary. "In learning those patterns, you can get a bit of a free ride in learning a new language, ” she says. Despite the overall cognitive benefits, bilingualism may present some disadvantages. When children learn vocabulary, monolinguals (单语者)can spend more time remembering words in one language, while bilinguals have to construct two different vocabularies.
“The biggest advantage in being bilingual is the same as having great international friends: It allows a person to understand a different way of thinking, with unique philosophies and assumptions about how others see the world, " Bialystok adds.

Research shows that animals can also be creative. Innovative species tend to survive when they enter new places, but novel behavior cannot be recognized unless “normal” behavior is studied. Researchers can now count and document the innovations that have been created by species, which would help them to quantify their creativity. Studies also show us that all animals are not equally inventive, with primates (灵长 类)tending to be more innovative due to their bigger brains.
The greatest scientific significance has been the innovation shown by animals such as apes, capuchins and macaques among primates. These species of primates possess the biggest brains compared to their body sizes. They are also heavy tool users. Their broad diets and complex forms of learning are also insightful. They show an evolutionary strategy that gives them new solutions to life's challenges.
However, even if these animals show innovativeness, they do not have the ability to im- prove upon the solutions of others. Unless they share information accurately and copy each others' inventions, their creative inventions are likely to disappear before they can be innovated further. Captain Joshua told David he would be happy to give the tour, but only if Mrs Humphries agreed. “I'd be happy to accompany you and David on a tour of the station, but there is some- thing you should know, ” Mrs Humphries told the captain.

That Saturday morning, Joshua, Mrs Humphries, and David visited the fire department. Joshua introduced David to his teammates and took him around town in one of the trucks. He also said that he would become an excellent firefighter when he grew up. Joshua gave an impressed nod of approval to David and said goodbye to them for the day.
22 years later, retired Joshua was at home when a fire broke out in his basement. Joshua and his wife were left trapped in the fire. They called 911 and within ten minutes, firefighters arrived. Firemen carried Josh- ua and his wife out of the burning house. They laid them down to receive medical attention. But before one of the firemen left them, Joshua grabbed his shoulder. “David, is that you?” he asked. Noticing the scar above Joshua’s eye, David recognized Joshua as well. Just like David had promised all those years before, he had ful- filled his dream of becoming a firefighter and saving lives.
