As I put down the exercise equipment, my brain tries to focus on what my trainer has said.
“Describe that to me,” asked Rob. He is looking for an answer that required me to connect my brain to my body.
Yes, I know. My brain is connected to my body — the thing that has been carrying my head around for the last 56 years. Since completing my undergraduate degree I have been increasingly immobilized by my working life. Sitting still at a desk, staring at a screen, it’s mostly through my fingers that I connect to my brain.
“I felt great,” I reply. “I could feel it in my back.” Rob is quick to encourage and set up more weight. Then cheerfully he’ll say “okay, next set.”
Every accomplishment in my life has been centered in my head — grades, degrees, promotions, published papers and teaching. But on reflection, I wasn’t paying much attention to my body.
Weightlifting is different. Rob is a trainer and manager at my local gym, my guide in helping me with a single goal — get strong. Despite my age, size and beginner status, Rob has made me feel safe. He is always close by, watching and posing questions. Like “where did you feel that?” or the more general request, “Describe that for me.”
Early on I took these as rote (机械性流程) pleasantries (客套话). Over time I realized he wanted more than just routine answers. Having shown me how to do an exercise, Rob would encourage me to think about the muscle or chain of muscles as they moved. The questions were a test of that connection. Gradually, I started thinking my way back into my body. Not my body as a whole but as individual, connections to newly identified places. Intentionally. Specifically. Magically. It’s surprisingly difficult.
I am five months into a new way of living with this 56-year-old body. It talks to me in a tally different way now. It reminds me of my capabilities, my muscles calling me to move, demanding to be challenged. And I long to continue this dialogue so that I’m ready the next time Rob says: “Describe that to me.”

“Beauty is only skin deep." This expression means that beauty is only a temporary surface quality. Some beauty products can cause lasting damage that goes far below the surface of the skin.
In America, many people use sunlight and non-natural light to darken their skin. Health
experts advise against what is called“tanning”because of its links to akin cancer. In the African country of Senegal(塞内加尔),some women take health risks trying to do just the opposite.
An average beauty supply shop in Dakar has many kinds of skin-lightening creams and
soaps. The World Health Organization says that 25%of Senegalese women use skin-lightening production a usual basis. These products can contain chemicals, like mercury(汞), hydroquinone(对苯二酚),etc. These are dangerous ingredients that can cause cancer and possibly other physical damage to the akin. They can actually burn the eyes and skin.
Shop worker Adama Diagne advises her visitors to avoid the stronger products that promise fast results. She users a cream that is made from carrots, not the strong chemical, hydroquinone. She says that it is a personal choice and that no one pressures her. Some women want to be black every day,but for her,she likes to be a shade of brown. Women in Senegal say they lighten their skin for the same reason that women all over the world make changes to their appearance. They say they want to look beautiful,to find a husband, to stand out in a crowd or simply to look great for a special event.
This thinking troubles Senegalese film-maker Khardiata Pouye Sall. So,she made“This
Color That Bothers Me",a film about the subject of skin lightening. She said,“I used the most shocking images so that women would see the dangers. It is hard to understand why a woman says that dark skin is not beautiful. It is in their heads. They want to please a man,to he loved or they want to please society,to succeed."
Ms. Sall says that the government needs to better control the marketing and the sale of skin-lightening products. But she adds that education is the best way to persuade people against using them.

A.attract attention with shockingimages
B.don't consider dark skin to be beautiful
C.find it hard to understand the true beauty
D.put beauty in the first place in their heads
8.What is Sall's attitude towards skin-lightening products?
A.Unsupportive. B.Casual.
C.Responsible. D.Positive.
Food blogs, celebrities, and nutritionists all advocate the benefits of eating organic (有机的) fruits and vegetables. But a new study published in Science Advances paints a more complex picture. While organic produce is likely slightly healthier to eat and, in some ways, more sustainable to grow, there are also downsides.
Organic fruits and vegetables typically cost more than conventional ones. To get a certificate as organic, farmers must meet specific criteria, including growing produce without the use of genetic engineering and chemical inputs. Without these methods, the growing process typically requires more labor, time, and money, a cost that is passed down to consumers.
It’s true that in many ways, organic is more sustainable than conventional farming. But when it comes to environmental concerns such as greenhouse gas output and water loss, the comparison gets complex. Organic farms produce less greenhouse gas output per acre. However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides (杀虫剂), and other methods that increase efficiency (效率), organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms. While there isn’t a whole lot research on the topic, the few studies that do exist suggest green gas output and water loss might actually be higher on organic farms, on a per unit basis, says study author Verena Seurfert.
In addition, while organic produce is likely more nutritious than conventional fruit and vegetables, there’s not a lot of evidence to support the claim that these often slight differences influence consumer health. The same is true for pesticide remainder. In developed countries, where pesticide use is tightly regulated, there’s no scientific consensus on how these often slight differences influence human health.
Still, Seurfert stresses that if you can afford to eat organic, you should do so. Organic farms provide safer work environments for workers, plus they support great biodiversity. The real takeaway from her study is not that organic is bad but that the practice needs more studies to increase yield without lowering sustainability.
But if you can’t afford to buy organic produce, don’t stress too much, particularly from a nutritional perspective.
9.What does the underlined word “downsides” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Dangers. B.Drawbacks. C.Benefits. D.Differences.
10.Which key factor makes it hard to compare organic farming and conventional farming when it comes to environmental concerns?
A.The yield. B.The price. C.The water loss. D.The labor.
11.Which of the following will the author most probably agree with?
A.Farmers, work environment should be improved.
B.Organic produce should be made more efficiently.
C.It isn’t wise for consumers to buy organic products.
D.Pesticide remainder does no harm to people’s health.
12.In the author’s opinion, why should we support organic produce?
A.It’s environmentally friendly. B.It’s more nutritious.
C.It helps keep the variety of plants. D.It’s safer for consumers.
Pop art, which emerged in the '50s and rose in popularity throughout the '60s, sought to challenge the idea of fine art.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Andy Warhol is probably the most influential figure of Pop Art. He became a famous celebrity himself. Understanding ‘star-culture’, advertisement and the effect of the media, he made these the core of his work. His screenprinted images of Marilyn Monroe, Soup cans, and sensational newspaper stories, quickly became synonymous(同义词) with Pop art.
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the fathers of the Pop Art movement. In November 2015, Christie’s sold Lichtenstein’s ‘Nurse’ for a record $95.4 million. In this piece, as well as in other works, we can see how the enlarged imagery of adverts and comics with recognisable characters, highlights the ironic(讽刺好笑的) images and situations in every-day life.
Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006)
Italian artist Mimmo Rotella, was one of the most important figures of post-war European art. He combined pieces of adverts and posters in his works. For this technique he used a series of torn posters, gathering them to create a tremendously expressive and powerful aesthetic(美学). His works Sempre lei Marilyn (2002) and Viva America(1963) are easy to recognize.
James Rosenquist (1933-2017)
James Rosenquist can be considered one of the strongest and most influential modern Pop Art artists. His work dived deep into cinematography and advertising. He employed techniques which are conventionally used to create Commercial Art. His works appear as an overwhelming mixture of fragmented(成碎片的) images of current celebrities, everyday objects and popular foods - giant lipsticks or spaghetti. If you go to Centre Pompidou, Paris, you can see his work President-Elect.
13.What artwork will you turn to if you are interested in Andy Warhol?
A.Marilyn Monroe. B.Nurse.
C.Viva America. D.President-Elect.
14.Which artist creates his works by putting together cut and torn posters?
A.Andy Warhol. B.Roy Lichtenstein.
C.Mimmo Rotella. D.James Rosenquist.
15.What do the four pop art artists’ works have in common?
A.They are typical fine art.
B.They show ironic everyday life.
C.They employ traditional techniques.
D.They are somewhat related to commercials.

根据第三段中“Since completing my undergraduate degree I have been increasingly immobilized by my working life. Sitting still at a desk, staring at a screen, it’s mostly through my fingers that I connect to my brain.(自从我完成了我的本科学位,我的工作生活越来越僵化。
根据倒数第二段中“Over time I realized he wanted more than just routine answers. Having shown me how to do an exercise, Rob would encourage me to think about the muscle or chain of muscles as they moved. The questions were a test of that connection.(随着时间的推移,我意识到他想要的不仅仅是常规的答案。
根据最后一段“I am five months into a new way of living with this 56-year-old body.(我已经和这个56岁的身体以一种新的方式生活了五个月)”和最后一句话“And I long to continue this dialogue so that I’m ready the next time Rob says: ‘Describe that to me.’(我很想继续这个对话,以便下次罗布说“给我描述一下”的时候,我能做好准备)”可知,作者已经56岁,但他还要坚持在教练的指导下锻炼下去,最后一句话暗示了他坚定的决心。故选B项。
通读全文并结合倒数第二段“Having shown me how to do an exercise, Rob would encourage me to think about the muscle or chain of muscles as they moved. The questions were a test of that connection.(在教我如何做运动后,罗布会鼓励我在肌肉或肌肉链运动时思考它们。
5.C 6.D 7.B 8.A
Shop worker Adama Diagne advises her visitors to avoid the stronger products that promise fast results.
They say they want to look beautiful,to find a husband,
to stand out in a crowd or simply to look great for a special event.
But she adds that education is the best way to persuade people against using them.
9.B 10.A 11.B 12.C
第一段最后一句“While organic produce is likely slightly healthier to eat and, in some ways, more sustainable to grow(有机农产品吃起来可能稍微更健康,在某种程度上,种植起来更可持续)”表示转折关系,说明有机植物也有不利之处。
However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides, and other methods that increase efficiency , organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms.(有机农场每英亩产生的温室气体更少。然而,由于禁止使用基因工程、杀虫剂和其他提高效率的方法,有机农场的产量也比传统农场低19% - 25%)”和文章倒数第二句“The real takeaway from her study is not that organic is bad but that the practice needs more studies to increase yield without lowering sustainability.(从她的研究中得出的真正结论不是有机食品不好,而是需要更多的研究来提高产量,而不降低可持续性)”可知,尽管有机植物产生的温室气体较少,但是有机植物的产量较低。 故选A。
根据第三段第四句“However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides, and other methods that increase efficiency, organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms.(有机农场每英亩产生的温室气体更少。
13.A 14.C 15.D

根据空前“Today I visited San Francisco’s modern-art museum. I was there to see a new exhibit about spaceflight.” 尤其是空后“I like to “visit” this particular painting every time I go to the museum not only because it evokes(唤起)strong feelings”我每次去博物馆都喜欢“参观”这幅画,不仅因为它能唤起强烈的感情......。 这对应了D项中的cry(哭)。
根据空前的“Some of that enjoyment comes from the feeling of familiarity of course.” 以及空后“There’s always plenty more to see, hear, taste, smell, feel, of understand the second or third time around. But how do you discover the exciting new thing in the familiar?” E(But it also comes from noticing new things in what is so familiar)但也来自于在如此熟悉的事物中发现新事物,可知E项符合题意,故选E。
根据空前的 “One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. First, recognize that everything is always changing.” 以及空后的“remove, judgment from the experience, if possible ,and just observe what's new.”
上一段“One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. (Another way is changing your routine and taking a break of some kind)就有对应的 “Another way...”。本空格后“That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.”
根据本空前的“That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.”

故填the。
故填where。
故填years。
People’s Republic of China和所给动词found之间是被动关系,所以应该用被动语态。故填was founded。
故填to。
根据句意和句中的虚拟语气以及空格后的名词短语national anti-desertification policies and the efforts of generations of eco-warriors可知,空格处应该介词without构成介词短语,相当于一个虚拟条件句。故填without。

spend time doing sth.
故将that改为which。
for a long time意为“很长一段时间”,是固定短语。故删除for后面的in。
What+(a/an)+adj.+n.+主语+谓语+(it is)!;由how引导的感叹句结构形式是:How+adj.+主语+谓语+(it is)!。根据句中的meaningful the holiday was,修饰形容词meaningful应使用How,故将What改为How。
