M: Really? Self-service supermarkets are becoming popular now. You can go shopping without asking for help from the salesperson. It’s really convenient as far as I know. What happened?
W: Of course, it is not that simple. As a new user, I had to sign in first. That was a waste of time. What’s worse, customers are asked for their phone number. It’s possible for them to receive advertisement messages or calls, because their shopping data is collected.
M: Anyway, you don’t need to sign in this time.
W: Worse still, nobody offered help when I had problems. I was at sea with the functions of the product. If I had been in the convenience store, the salesperson would have given me a hand immediately.

There isn’t a subway station near here, but there’s the number fifteen bus that stops across the street and the train station is just two or three stops down.
W: Oh really? Well, how frequent are the buses? I mean, will I have to wait long?
M: Let’s see. Well, the last number fifteen came by about five minutes ago, and they’re quite frequent. I mean, they come by every eight minutes or so.

M: This is one of the most advanced four-wheel-drive vehicles. We have air-conditioning, GPS and emergency food if necessary. Just enjoy the ride. Look at those camels — they do the journey on foot and they’re not complaining.
W: Yes, but I’ve seen many goats and cows next to the road. They weren’t comfortable in this heat.
M: Put the radio on and enjoy the view. The music will make you better. We’re quite safe. We’re better equipped than most people to deal with any problems that might arise.

In 1980, I lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia which was a dirty steel town then. The steel factory was fed by a large number of coal mines surrounding the area. I became fascinated by the mines, the miners and the life they led. One weekend, I visited the Miner’s Museum, which was built over a disused mine. Pictures of men, faces black with coal dust, hung from the walls on the main floor. Many would die from black lung disease long before they died of old age.
I was the only local in the group of tourists. Along the way, we paused to look at the displays of mining equipment from centuries long gone. At one lighted alcove (壁凹) there was a small cage. A bird once lived inside. Treated kindly by the miners, it was well fed. It sat and waited to give up its life as a warning of the deadly methane gas (沼气) the coal produced. With no color or smell, a buildup of methane would kill the miners and destroy the tunnels they worked in. The bird’s death, like a smoke detector, warned the men of danger.
“Turn off your helmet lights!” the guide then ordered in the tunnel. “I want you to experience the life of a miner.” One by one we turned off our lights. The darkness was total-so thick that you thought the very air itself had been sucked out of the mine. And the silence! The silence was complete except for the breaths of fear from my companions. In the end, when we were pulled back to the surface the warm sun had new meaning for us.
Back in my small, rented room in a basement, I closed the curtains and turned off the lights. I thought deeply about a miner’s life under the ground, black dust, no sunshine and much danger. It’s not a life I would wish on anyone. Many people may hate their jobs. There have been a few I didn’t like and complained about. Then I thought about the coal miners and realized how blessed I am.

In the end, when we were pulled back to the surface the warm sun had new meaning for us.(“把头盔灯关掉!” 最后,当我们被拉回到地面上时,温暖的太阳对我们有了新的意义)”和“Back in my small, rented room in a basement, I closed the curtains and turned off the lights. I thought deeply about a miner’s life under the ground, black dust, no sunshine and much danger. It’s not a life I would wish on anyone. Many people may hate their jobs. There have been a few I didn’t like and complained about. Then I thought about the coal miners and realized how blessed I am.

When a heavy storm hit, residents of the floating community of Schoonschip in Amsterdam had little doubt about whether they could ride it out. They tied up their bikes and outdoor benches, and checked in with neighbors to ensure everyone had enough food and water as their neighborhood slid up and down its steel foundational pillars (支柱), rising along with the water and going back to its original position after the rain stopped.
“We feel safer in storm because we are floating,” says Siti Boelen, a Dutch television producer who moved into Schoonschip two years ago. As sea levels rise and supercharged storms cause waters to rise, floating neighborhoods offer an experiment in flood defense that could allow coastal communities to better fight against climate change.
A floating house can be constructed on any shoreline and is able to deal with rising seas by remaining on the top of the water’s surface. Unlike houseboats, which can easily be moved and relocated, floating homes are fixed to the shore and are usually connected to the local sewer (污水管道) system and power grid. They are structurally similar to houses built on land, but instead of a basement, they have a concrete hull (船体) that acts as a counterbalance, allowing them to remain stable in the water.
Severe wind and rain, or even the passing of large cruise ships, can make the buildings rock. Siti Boelen, the Schoonschip resident, says that when she first moved in, stormy weather made her think twice. “You feel it in your stomach,” she says, adding that she has gotten used to the feeling. Floating homes also require extra infrastructure and work to connect to the electricity grid and sewer system.
But the benefits may outweigh the costs. “If there are floods, it’s expected that many people will move to higher ground. But the alternative is to stay close to coastal cities and explore expansion onto the water,” says Rutger de Graaf. “If you consider that in the second half of the century, hundreds of millions of people will be displaced by sea level rise, we need to start now to increase the scale of floating developments.”

After limiting the screen time, the minors in China are prohibited against getting tattooed (文身) now.
According to the guideline, which came out on June 6th, 2022, any enterprise, organization and individuals should be stopped from providing inking services. The guideline also prohibits “encouraging or forcing” children into getting tattoos, while encouraging parents to advise their children against getting tattooed.
“All agencies that provide tattooing services should clearly display signs refusing minors, and ask customers to show their IDs if it’s hard to judge their age based on their appearance,” the guideline said.
Tattoo culture has gained popularity especially among the country’s youth in recent years. They regard it as a form of fashion and self expression. However, tattoos haven’t been widely accepted in the society and they might have a bad influence on people in some situations.
Amanla, a tattoo artist in the southwestern Yunnan Province, said he agreed with the ban. He said, “Protection is necessary. But more deeply, it’s also disrespectful for people to do something merely to be cool without knowing what they really want or understanding the pattern being drawn on their body.”
In recent years, several regions have issued local regulations banning tattoo services for children. In June of last year, a court in the eastern Jiangsu Province ordered a tattoo shop to stop tattooing minors after being accused of using ink containing harmful pigments (色素).
Yuan Ningning, a legal advisor specializing in family education law, said that the working guideline has cleared up the responsibilities between different regulators and called for more education and specific punishments.
“The central government has already formed a consensus (共识),” Yuan said. “But it takes a learning process among the local authorities for the guideline to be effective. That’s the first and a very crucial step.”

A.Refuse to serve the minors.
B.Offer quality service for teenagers.
C.Ask the minors’ parents for advice.
D.Keep the minors safe while tattooing.
根据第三段中“All agencies that provide tattooing services should clearly display signs refusing minors, and ask customers to show their IDs if it’s hard to judge their age based on their appearance(所有提供纹身服务的机构都应明确显示拒绝未成年人文身的标志,如果根据外表难以判断年龄,则要求顾客出示身份证件)”可知,文身商店应该拒绝为未成年人提供文身服务。故选A项。
33.What does paragraph 4 tell us about tattoo?
A.Tattooing has a long history in China.
B.The society has been influenced by tattooing.
C.Young people are more interested in tattooing.
D.Tattooing helps people do their work better.
根据第四段中“Tattoo culture has gained popularity especially among the country’s youth in recent years. They regard it as a form of fashion and self expression.(近年来,文身文化越来越受欢迎,尤其是在该国的年轻人中。他们认为这是一种时尚和自我表达的形式)”可知,青少年更对文身感兴趣。故选C项。

A.Those who break the rules will be punished.
B.It has got wide recognition among the public.
C.Educators play a key role in carrying out the rules.
D.It is a long way for the guideline to make a difference.
根据最后一段中“But it takes a learning process among the local authorities for the guideline to be effective(但是,地方政府之间需要一个学习的过程,才能使指导意见生效)”可知,这个条例要产生效果还有很长的一段路要走。

Papa, my grandfather, started teaching me to play chess when I was ten. He taught me everything he knew about chess. It took me three years to defeat him. Papa turned the chessboard over. 1 was amazed by what 1 saw. It was covered with dozens of names and dates.
“These are the people who have beaten me at chess. Look, this is the fellow who saved my life when we served in the army. He sent me to the hospital and cared for me. While in the hospital, he defeated me at chess,” Papa said, pointing to a name, Paul Ward, on the board. Then he handed me a pen and asked me to add my name to it.
Years later, I graduated from college with a degree in social work. Papa handed me his chessboard, saying, “I want you to have this.”
“Papa, I can’t take this. It’s special to you.”
“And now, it’ll be special to you, Grandson. That’s the way it is in life: We pass our love on to the next person.”
Sadly, it wasn’t long after this that Papa passed away. I was heartbroken, of course. But determined to take the things I had learned from him, and the love he had shown me, and pass them on to others.
Then 1 was hired to be the social worker for a retirement community. Each day. I observed elderly residents sitting alone, heads down, ready to give up. In the yard, there were several stone tables with chess boards imprinted (刻印) on them. One day, I sat down, set up my chess pieces and waited. An elderly man cautiously approached.
“Care for a game?” I cheerfully inquired. The man smiled weakly and sat down. It seemed as if he wasn’t sure how to move the chess. We played in silence. The only sounds were the click-click of our chess pieces. 1 won. The old man sighed. “It’s been a while since I played,” he explained, “what if we can play chess together every day?” Then, I decided to do something for the elderly.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
We set up a group called The Senior Chess Club. I decided to bring Papa’s chessboard there. The old man came every day. He approached me when I set up the board. “How about a match again?” he asked. As soon as we began, I could see he had improved his chess skills. His moves were wise and swift. Before we had the chess club, he rarely left his room. But now, he reconnected with old friends and made new ones. I wondered how he had changed so much.
The old man explained, “It was all because of your chessboard.” Before I could respond, he made his last move and defeated me. I congratulated him and asked him to write his name on the chessboard. He smiled, saying, “I don’t need to. Paul Ward. It’s already on the upper right-hand corner.” Yes, he is right. There it was. Papa’s words suddenly flooded over me: “This is the fellow who saved my life...”. And now, years later, Papa’s love for chess returned the favor.
