In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his team left England in a wooden sailing ship called the Endurance, hoping to become the first to cross Antarctica.
But in 1915, the Endurance became trapped over the Weddell Sea. The ice destroyed the Endurance and later sank it. Shackleton and all of his men abandoned the ship and managed to stay alive. Although they failed to complete the expedition, the tale of their long and difficult return is one of the most famous survival stories of all time.
Much was known about the location of the Endurance. The ship’s captain kept accurate records of the ship’s position. The ship’s photographer even took pictures of it as it went down. But the ship, deep in the icy waters near Antarctica, had never been found.
Now, a search team called “Endurance22” located the ship, which was found 1.87 miles below the ocean’s surface, about four miles south of its last known position. The team reports that the ship is in excellent shape. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small worms that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in the cold waters around Antarctica.
The Endurance 22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an icebreaking ship. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths which can travel by themselves deep under the sea. What makes them unique is that they can travel under the ice and go where the ship can not. Once the ship was located, the Sabertooths used highquality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.
The Endurance 22 plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using the careful scans they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.
24. What can we know about Shackleton?
A. He built the Endurance by himself. B. He was also a famous photographer.
C. He had a tough journey back home. D. He crossed Antarctica by the Endurance.
25. What helped preserve “the Endurance” well?
A. Fine weather. B. Cold water.
C. Wood material. D. Unique structure.
26. What is special about the Sabertooths?
A. They can repair the ship. B. They can travel under the ice.
C. They can break ice on the sea. D. They can take pictures in detail.
27. How will the scientists deal with the discovered Endurance?
A. They will let it remain untouched.
B. They will rebuild it using 3D technology.
C. They will use scanners to record its details.
D. They will do research on creating a model.

The “butterfly effect” may be real, which is used to describe seemingly insignificant events that can have unplanned consequences. But there might be a more literal “butterfly effect” taking place right before our eyes, scientists suggest.
According to new research, insects actually carry electrical charges which can have enormous effects on the atmosphere, potentially influencing even the weather. The findings were published Monday in the journal Science.
Before you can understand that, you have to understand how electrical charges in the atmosphere work. The Earth’s atmosphere always carries an electrical charge to a lesser or greater degree, which scientists refer to as the Potential Gradient (PG). Scientists concluded that atmospheric electricity is primarily driven by natural weather events like thunderstorms and shower clouds, though factors like human pollution also affect it. Researchers, therefore, want to know how electrical charges impact clouds.
To confirm that honeybees carry electrical charges, researchers placed an electrical field monitor near a swarm of (一群) honeybees near the University of Bristol. They also placed a control monitor in a field where there were no bee swarms. The monitor near the bee swarm picked up an increase in electrical charge whereas the control monitor detected no such effect, confirming their assumption.
Second, the researchers wanted to calculate the insects’ electrical effects on the atmosphere compared to the electrical impacts of natural weather events like clouds and dust storms. They calculated the electrical charge of three different types of insect swarms. Most surprisingly, insects’ electrical charges can have just as significant an impact on atmospheric electricity as natural weather events.
The knowledge that insects impact the atmosphere’s electricity has bigger implications for science. PG affects the “movement of aerosols (气溶胶) in the atmosphere, and leads to charging of droplets in some clouds,” according to Hunting. Insect swarms likely won’t drive weather events like thunderstorms, but they could impact the movement of these atmospheric aerosols.
Further research will dive into this previously unexplored field of scientific research and may go beyond insects, since organisms like birds and microbes also carry electrical charges.
28. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The background of the research.
B. The publication of journal Science.
C. The work of electrical charges in atmosphere.
D. The electrical effects of insects on atmosphere.
29. How did researchers conduct the process of experiments?
A. By using statistics. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By introducing concepts. D. By making comparisons.
30. Which has the least electrical effects on the atmosphere’s electricity?
A. Human pollution. B. Shower clouds.
C. The thunderstorms. D. The insect swarms.
31. What can we learn about the research from the passage?
A. Insect swarms are likely to drive thunderstorms.
B. Natural weather events lead to charging of droplets.
C. Both PG and insect swarms affect the movement of atmospheric aerosols.
D. Researchers have made controlled experiment between insects and organisms.
D
A machine can now not only beat you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate. Last week, in a public debate in San Francisco, a software program called Project Debater beat its human opponents, including Noa Ovadia, Israel's former national debating champion.
Brilliant though it is, Project Debater has some weaknesses. It takes sentences from its library of documents and prebuilt arguments and strings them together. This can lead to the kinds of errors no human would make. Such wrinkles will no doubt be ironed out, yet they also point to a fundamental problem. As Kristian Hammond, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, put it: “There's never a stage at which the system knows what it's talking about.”
What Hammond is referring to is the question of meaning, and meaning is central to what distinguishes the least intelligent of humans from the most intelligent of machines. A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean. Indeed, to a computer, meaning is irrelevant. Humans, in thinking, talking, reading and writing, also work with symbols. But for humans, meaning is everything. When we communicate, we communicate meaning. What matters is not just the outside of a string of symbols, but the inside too, not just how they are arranged but what they mean.
Meaning emerges through a process of social interaction, not of computation, interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside, in society, in social memory, social conventions and social relations. It is this that distinguishes humans from machines. And that's why, however astonishing Project Debater may seem, the tradition that began with Socrates and Confucius will not end with artificial intelligence.
32. Why does the author mention Noa Ovadia in the first paragraph?
A. To explain the use of a software program.
B. To show the cleverness of Project Debater.
C. To introduce the designer of Project Debater.
D. To emphasize the fairness of the competition.
33. What does the underlined word “wrinkles” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Arguments. B. Doubts. C. Errors. D. Differences.
34. What is Project Debater unable to do according to Hammond?
A. Create rules. B. Comprehend meaning.
C. Talk fluently. D. Identify difficult words.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Social interaction is key to understanding symbols.
B. The human brain has potential yet to be developed.
C. Ancient philosophers set good examples for debaters.
D. Artificial intelligence ensures humans a bright future.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared to other alternatives, it's comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 36 But no matter when you travel, it's a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.
Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. 37 Then you won't have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you're riding on trains, you won't be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 38 In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. 39 Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun. 40 Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600(the number of seconds in an hour)by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile(the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you're going 67.92 mph.
A. Train trips aren't for impatient types.
B. You'll have views from both sides of the train.
C. The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D. That's particularly true during busy summer months.
E. You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F. Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G. He may also book you in a sleeping car that's right next to the diner.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It all began when I moved to Dallasin the fourth grade, and I noticed that I was behind in my reading at School. Reading out loud, I had difficulty with half the sentences. My teacher, Mrs. Agnew, said my reading comprehension and ability to pronounce words was at a lower level than other fourth graders. I was scared every time she called on me to read aloud because, although I would try my hardest, she would always have to help me with the words. Mrs. Agnew suggested to my mother that I be tested for dyslexia (发育性阅读障碍) and seek a cure.
At first I didn’t understand why I was being tested. To be honest, I was in fear of facing failure then. Nervous and confused, I sat waiting in the hospital room, unsure of what Dr. Grady, the doctor who diagnosed developmental dyslexia, was telling my parents about the test results.
However, the final results showed that I did have developmental dyslexia. Knowing it, I froze. I had no idea what to do but stand still. My mother looked at me and said quietly, “Honey, don’t worry, and I’ll be with you all time. Are you going to let the obstacle get in your way? Say NO!”. Eventually, I became determined to struggle against my disability. I started to take speech treatments from doctors and some medical volunteers regularly. Dr. Grady told us to go to the hospital twice a week for treatment and my reading ability will get to normal after three years’ training.
Gradually, I even began to love reading, which I had once hated it so much. Several medical volunteers listened to me patiently and taught me patiently. I was deeply moved. Whenever I saw volunteers in white candy-striped (粉白相间条纹的) medical uniforms passing by me, I had a strong desire to give back by being a volunteer to help those like me.

读后续写
The time for retesting finally arrived. I had overcome my learning disability. Dr. Grady confirmed this. “I’m proud of you, honey!” My mother smiled, hugging me tightly. Dr. Grady said that my dyslexia was at a minimum. My reading ability was as normal as other teens. I was overjoyed. But even though I had conquered one of the biggest challenges in my life, I still felt like something was missing. I decided to do something for others.
One day a little girl in a wheelchair asked me to read a book to her. I read the book very slowly so that she could understand the story and the words. When it was time for me to leave, the girl thanked me for reading to her. I walked out of her room with a huge smile on my face. Without their help and encouragement, I would have hesitated in reading a book to this little girl, but now I was confident. I had overcome my disability and was helping others to overcome theirs. I am determined to help others face and conquer the challenges that I have overcome.

W: I’ve never seen any children going to her house.
M: What about other relatives?
W: I know she has an older brother but he lives far away.
M: She must be all alone. Do you think we should do something to help her?
W: Of course. She’s such a nice person. Perhaps we should ask if the others in the community would also like to be with her.
M: We should — but how?
W: We could help her with some housework. She’ll probably be glad of that.
M: Good idea. You could help take care of her garden and I could clean the house with her. She will be happy.
W: Agreed.
9. M: Excuse me, Mandy. Have you seen Jennifer in our office?
W: Not today, Phil. Why?
M: I said something really stupid that hurt her feelings I just wanted to say sorry to her.
W: It must have been bad.
M: Where can I find her?
W: She’s usually in the meeting room talking with clients around this time, and in the canteen at noon.
M: I’ve been to those places already but she’s not there.
W: What on earth did you say to get her so angry? You two are usually such good friends.
M: Well, she was wearing a new dress. I happened to say that my parents had once had some curtains in a similar material.
W: That wasn’t a nice thing to compare her new dress to a pair of old curtains.
M: But I didn’t get a chance to say it was nice. I loved those curtains.
W: Why not talk to her tomorrow morning? I’m sure she’ll come earlier tomorrow, as she has a meeting with me every Friday morning.
M: You’re right. What else can I do?
W: How about buying her a little gift?
M: Great. I’ll go to the shopping mall after work.
10. This is Bruce Ogilvy with the noon news update for City Radio. President Barry Jeffries has announced that the government will provide £60 million in relief to communities that suffered from the effects of the weekend earthquake. Hundreds of people who lost homes have been housed in hotels, the homes of volunteers and schools. Some of the money promised by the President will be used to help repair roads and bridges which were badly damaged by the disaster. Caroline Crawford, a spokesperson for the President, said the £60 million was just the first payment. Then another £100 million was to be given from the fund for rebuilding the broken houses. The earthquake is so far known to have cost ten lives. However, there was one piece of good news this morning. A ten-year-old boy found his anxious parents after being lost in the chaos. The rescue team also needs more medical workers to join. If you want to help, please call our local Red Cross. For more news and information on the efforts, visit our website at www.citynews.com. We’ll be providing updates every hour or whenever an important story breaks. This has been Bruce Ogilvy with the news. Stay tuned for a full weather update.
