Dear World,
My son starts school today. It’s going to be strange and new to him for a while, and I hope you will be nice to him.

But now, things are going to be different. This morning, he is going to walk down the front steps himself, say goodbye and start a new journey that will be difficult and challenging.
It will require love and bravery to live his life in the world
So, World, I hope you will take him by his young hand and teach him the things he will have to know. Give him quiet time to think about why there are birds in the sky and flowers on the green hill. Teach him that for every villain(恶棍), there is a hero; that for every enemy, there is a friend. Teach him how wonderful reading can be. Teach him that it is better to fail than it is to cheat. Teach him to believe in himself, even if everyone tells him that he is wrong. Teach him gently, World, but don't protect him from everything. Facing difficult situations will make him strong.

Marie Kondo is an expert (专家) on organizing and cleaning. She is considered an expert on clearing away unused or unnecessary things, known as clutter. She wrote a book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, which is a best-seller around the world.
Marie Kondo says people can improve their life by changing the way they think about all their things—everything from books, documents and photographs to clothing.
This is not the first time an organizing expert has written a book on clutter. Other books suggest wonderful things will happen when you organize your home. One book says that if you throw out 50 things from your home, you will truly find your life. Another book says that if you make clutter disappear, you will also lose weight. And still others promise a better job, more money and a perfect family if you simply organize the things. Marie Kondo told the Business Insider website that some of her customers had lost weight. “Your self-perception (自我认知) is improved by living in a clean and tidy room,” she said. “This can change lifestyles and appearances.”
Marie Kondo teaches a method of organizing that she calls KonMari. Ms Kondo says KonMari creates a different relationship between you and your things. If the object meant something to you or served you well you thanked it for its service before throwing or giving it away. In her book, Ms Kondo suggests that you touch the item and ask one simple question. Does it bring me joy? If it doesn’t, you give it away so that it may give joy to someone else.

There is an old saying about volunteer work that goes like this: “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”
Today, many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are a lot of ways to meet other people’s needs. For example, some volunteers provide help after a disaster. Others are happy to get dirty while repairing homes or planting trees or flowers in poor neighborhoods. Young people see suffering and loneliness around them and find ways to help. And history lovers help archeologists (考古学家) search for ancient objects to help deepen knowledge of the past.
Volunteers also work in many areas around the world, including Hati. Years have passed since a 7.0 earthquake shook the nation. The exact number of people who died may never be known. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquake lined in temporary (临时的) shelters for more than 3 years. Former American President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn joined five hundred volunteers in the town of Leogane to build houses.
Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example. Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project. She could almost not believe how much rubbish was ruining (摧毁) some of the area’s most beautiful sights. Ms Underhill learned about how to deal with the rubbish while taking part in other volunteer projects. Soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. Ms Underhill says the work is very hard. But she praises the group’s efforts as a wonderful experience. The young Englishwoman says the Indian media started calling her “Garbage Girl”. And she says she was pleased with the name.
American teenagers also volunteer in many ways.
23. How did Jodie Underhill feel when she saw beautiful sights ruined by the rubbish?
A. Pleased. B. Shocked. C. Moved. D. Interested.

B. The number of people who died in Haiti’s earthquake is unclear.
C. History lovers can’t learn the history from ancient objects.

25. What may the next passage talk about?
A. The reason why people offer their services to others.
B. The way to join a volunteer group.
C. The volunteer work that American teenagers do.
D. The advantages that volunteers can bring.

They say that “travel is the best teacher” and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587-1641). His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake not only encourages a love of travelling among Chinese people but provides important scientific information about the country’s land and geography.
Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however, Xu’s father died and so, it seemed impossible for his travelling dreams. He then started managing the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required.
But his mother had different ideas. Understanding her son’s love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.
So at the age of twenty and with his mother’s support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well. He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years. During this time, he travelled throughout the Ming kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500, 000 words, would become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake later.
Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. However, his willingness to face hardships came at a cost. Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys.
Sadly, Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4-year trip through the southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after he passed away, much of it had been destroyed (毁坏) or lost. Although incomplete, it still made Xu a travelling legend (传奇) around the world.
26. What is the passage mainly about?

My mother is a teacher, and I grew up with the challenges a teacher faces. I often asked her, “Why do you teach? What keeps you teaching?” The answer was always the same. “There is always that one child, that one moment that is worth it.”
Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was, “It’s that one child, that one special moment.”
One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the “Team” events and we were moving on to a “High” one called the Wire (钢索) Walk.
In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs (木桩) in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure.
When I asked who would try, a few girls raised their hands, and they finished the Wire Walk with little difficulty.
But when it was Susie’s turn, it seemed that she didn’t really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She answered softly, “I suppose.”
Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach for the first peg. The other girls cheered for her. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realized she would not go much further.
Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight (紧紧地), looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can’t.”
The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.
“I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!”Mary broke the silence. To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.
Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary.
We all cheered.
Moments like this keep me doing what I do. The young hearts continue to fill me with courage.
29. Why did Susie stop halfway up to the wire?
A Because the teacher asked her to do it.
B. Because something was wrong with it.
C. Because she was too afraid to move on.
D. Because it was too high for her to reach.
30. Mary broke the silence in order to _________ .
A. comfort and encourage Susie B. relax the teacher
C. catch others’ attention D. draw Susie’s attention
31. What can we learn from the story of Susie and Mary?
A Helping others is helping ourselves.
B. A word of encouragement matters a lot.
C. Outdoor activities bring people closer than ever.
D. A good method is of great importance in teaching.
32. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. That One Moment B. The Wire Walk
C. Love and Friendship D. The Young Hearts

One of the most often asked and most controversially(有争议的) answered questions is "What should I do when I meet a blind person?" A quick Google search will turn up plenty of answers, which are quite different from each other. So, obviously, there is no general agreement on what to do when you meet a blind person.
There are no special rules or does and doesn't that can deal with this situation. There is only one principle(原则): Blind people are nothing more or less than people who happen to be blind. As such, it is our own job to take care of ourselves, and we are grateful to no one else for special care or leadership. For we think we are equal(平等的)to normal people.
The best thing to do is nothing. Don't suppose you know what we need. If we do need something, we'll politely let you know.
Forget everything you've heard about the blind even if you consider yourself to be an expert. Blind people have plenty to say about "experts". Especially, forget anything you've heard or read about "Ten Things to Do if You Meet a Blind Person". The advice will probably just cause more embarrassment(尴尬). More of it is made up by sighted people anyway and doesn't necessarily stand for the blind's view.
There is completely no way to second—guess the situation by imposing(强加)any preformed ideas. Even if you've known other blind people, don't think you know what to do with every one of them. The thing that often makes us angry is to hear "It's OK. My mother(sister, cousin, friend)is blind."
Blind people are as different from each other as any two people on this earth. There are no similarities among us that you can depend on. Even the degree of vision, hearing or touch that we use can be very different. Most blind people do have same degree of vision, and even the very few of us who are totally blind may use our touch and hearing very effectively.
23. It can be inferred from the passage that the writer________.
A. is a blind person B. hears more clearly than others
C. never asks others for help D. thinks blind people need special care
24. According to the passage, which of the following opinions may the writer disagree with?
A. Most blind people can take care of themselves.
B. Blind people aren't equal to sighted people.
C. Blind people generally dislike those thinking they understand the blind a lot.
D. Each person, blind or sighted, is different from anyone else.
25. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Never Help the Blind B. Try to Help the Blind
C. Not Every Help Is Good for the Blind D. Learn More about the Blind
C
People all over the world are now taking action to fight against the novel coronavirus. But how they behave may depend on their own culture and traditions. Let's take a look.
When everyone in China is wearing masks to stop the novel coronavirus, many people in Western countries don't seem to want to do the same. For example, an Italian lawmaker was criticized (批评)by his coworkers when he went to work with a mask. They said he was "causing panic"(恐慌). But why do the East and West have different ideas about wearing masks? Let's take a look.
Western ideas about masks
In the West, people should wear masks only when they get sick—chronic allergies(慢性过敏) or infectious(传染的)diseases. People see masks as a tool to protect sick people and stop disease from spreading, so healthy people don't need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel coronavirus outbreak, people would be "treated as a virus spreader" if they go out with a mask. Some European and American people say wearing a mask outdoors makes them feel "worried", "shy", and "afraid of being looked at differently."
But as the number of COVID-19 cases is growing around the world, people in the West are changing their ideas. In the US, for example, many healthy people are starting to wear masks now to protect themselves.
Mask culture in the East
In Asian countries like China and Japan, wearing masks is common. In 1910, Chinese doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonic plague(肺鼠疫). Since then, masks have been a symbol of China's position as a modern, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist(人类学家)Christos Lynteris. During the 2003 SARS epidemic(传染病), people in China and East Asia also used masks to protect themselves.
In Japan, wearing masks shows your politeness when you get a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion. They have different colors and patterns to choose to match their clothes. Some young women wear masks when they don't have their makeup on. Many pop stars in Asia also use masks to protect their privacy(隐私). This cultural and historical background has made it easier for people in the East to wear masks when epidemics break out.
26. What did the coworkers think of the Italian lawmaker?
A. He was too worried to work. B. He made other people nervous.
C. He was unwilling to go to work. D. He was just trying to protect himself.
27. From the story, what might people use masks to do in Japan?
a Show politeness. b. Protect privacy. c. Look fashionable. d. Protect their makeup.
A. abc B. bcd C. acd D. abd
28. From the story, we know that________.
A. healthy people in the West will never wear masks
B. wearing masks is the only way to protect ourselves
C. masks can be used in many different ways
D. masks are not useful during a serious epidemic
D
Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to make money in order to pay for my brother' s education and mine. They don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. For them, "I love you" is too difficult to say. Even sending flowers to each other on some special days is hardly ever seen.
One day, my mother was repairing a quilt(被子). I silently sat beside her and looked at her. "Mum, may I ask you a question?" I said.
"What?" she replied, still doing her work. "Is there love between you and Dads" I asked her in a very low voice. My mother stopped her work and looked at me in surprise. She didn't answer my question at once. Then, she bowed her head and continued to do her work.
I was afraid that I had hurt her feelings. I felt so embarrassed that I didn't know what to do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
"Look at this thread(线). Sometimes it appears, but most of the time, it hides in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there."
I couldn't understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale. After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. The doctor had said my father would recover in two months. But after two months he still couldn't walk by himself. All of us were worried about him. "Dad, how are you feeling now" I asked him one day. "Susan, don't worry about me." he said gently. "To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mum. I like this kind of life. Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
29. Why does the writer sometimes doubt whether there is real love between her parents?
A. Because they are very busy earning money.
B. Because her father gets angry with her mother easily.
C. Because they often fight with each other.
D. Because they hardly express Their love to each other.
30. What does the underlined word "durable " mean in Chinese?
A. 好看的 B. 廉价的 C. 耐用的 D. 朴素的
31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer understood her mum's words at once.
B. People should often say "I love you".
C. The writer's parents didn't love each other.
D. Love is there, no matter whether you say it or not.
32. What's the main idea of the passage`s
A. We should understand our parents.
B. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
