Each face is the size of a bus. The hands are about four meters long. It is about the size of two people standing on top of each other. You will probably hear it and see it. I noticed a dad and his son at the park. His son wasn’t able to communicate, but he seemed satisfied with sitting in the sand. The dad explained to me that his son could only make some sounds. The boy had been in speech therapy for years. After so much time in therapy, the boy was able to maintain(保持)eye contact for a few seconds and the father was delighted by the achievement! He told me how expensive the therapies for his son’s specific needs were and what a pleasure it was to see all of the years of hard work pay off. The father and son connected, and those few seconds of eye contact meant the world to that dad!
As we talked about therapy, the dad shared with me that his goal for his boy was to someday be able to go for ice cream together. He said his father used to take him out for ice cream and he hoped he could do the same with his child. Suddenly, the son stopped putting his fingers in the sand, looked at his father and said, “Hi. ” Seconds later, the boy went back into his own world. The dad wanted to say something, but he couldn’t. His love for this boy was so great that the words would not come. But what did come were tears. Those tears showed how proud he was of his son. A father loves his child more than words will ever be able to express.
Although they were strangers to me, I am honored(荣幸的)to have shared in this precious celebration of achievement in that boy’s young life. I hope someday they will be able to go for ice cream and have a beautiful father and son outing. This event touched me deeply and made me consider my relationship with my own father. I hope that as they communicate further, more and more memories will be created for them to share. I believe the feelings held by all great fathers—their hard work, their love, their pride, and their tears of love—are all the same.

It’s been 100 years since the actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin produced the film The Kid, which many consider to be his greatest one.
Like all films at the time, The Kid was made in black and white and was silent (made without any sound, not even the characters talking). The story is about the relationship between “the Tramp”, played by Chaplin, and his adopted(领养的)child, played by Jackie Coogan. The pair develop a partnership where the six-year-old boy breaks windows and runs away, so that Chaplin’s character can offer his services as a window fixer.
Although the film is a comedy, it also has some tragedy, reflecting Chaplin’s own life. He started testing actors for the role of the Kid just a few days after his baby son had died. Chaplin was known for being hard to please, and it is said that if he could, he would have played every role in every one of his films. When Chaplin visited a theatre, a dancer brought his son, Jackie Coogan, on stage, and Chaplin knew he had his co-star(联袂主演者). Chaplin later wrote, “All children in some form have talents; the trick is to bring it out in them. With Jackie, it was easy. ”
Like the Kid in the film, Chaplin and his brother Sydney grew up very poor. They lived in London and were raised by their mother. When Chaplin was 10 years old, his mum became too ill to look after her sons, so they had to take care of themselves. He later wrote that the film sets in The Kid were based on the places where he and Sydney had lived with their mother as children. “Perhaps that’s why the film had some truth, ” he said.

On the first day of school, children can be very nervous. However, sometimes parents are more nervous than the students themselves. A new British survey shows that one in three parents are worried that their children will not make friends when they start school.
The survey was carried out by Action for Children, a children’s charity in the UK. They questioned more than 2, 200 parents and found that parents are more likely to care about their children’s ability to make friends than their lessons. 33% of the parents put not making friends on top of the list of their worries about their children, while just 11% of the parents said their main worry is that their children will not be able to keep up with the schoolwork.
Everyone needs friends. They are a basic source of happiness and hope in our lives. However, the ability to make friends varies from person to person. To some people, making friends is easy, and to others it’s very difficult. We all have the ability to make friends. Unluckily, many people never reach their potential. Making friends is a skill, and the first step in developing that skill is to know how to get along with others.
Experts say it’s natural for some children to feel nervous if they don’t know how to get on well with others in a new environment. However, parents and teachers should help them learn some basic social skills such as sharing, helping, cooperation and communication.
“Teach your child to know the importance of having friends. Let him or her know having hundreds of online friends is not the same as having a friend he or she can connect and be with in person every day,” stressed an expert.

But her father did not listen, and soon my life became one long tour.
One day the queen heard about me. She liked me so much that she invited me to live with her. She paid the farmer a thousand pieces of gold to keep me!
For the first time on Brobdingnag I felt safe and happy.
The queen saw me as her pet and treated me well She gave me a little box to live in with furniture and everything I needed.
Every Wednesday, I had many interesting conversations with the king and he was curious about life in England and Europe.
He asked me about the laws of my country and its government and religions.
“In my country” I explained, “the system works very well because the government makes the laws and there are many books to teach them how to govern. Things are not always perfect,” I continued.
The king listened carefully. But then suddenly he started laughing,
“How important you polite people think you are,” he said. You tell me you have many books about how to govern your county are you all so stupid? Your system is not as efficient(有效的) as you think.”
“You must not be influenced by my size, sir. “I said. “In my country there are many tall people who are extremely stupid and many short people who are very intelligent. This is true of everything.

“Five more minutes” is the first thought of many people when their alarms ring in the morning. This first thought is usually followed by hitting the snooze button (小睡催醒按钮) and falling back asleep for a few more moments. Hitting the snooze button has become a habit for millions of people.
Though hitting the snooze button allows people a few more minutes of sleep, it causes unhealthy sleep patterns (模式). Most people think if they are tired when they first wake up, they need more sleep. However, sleeping is a process with different cycles (循环). To feel fully rested, the body must go through all the sleep cycles. Falling back asleep after hitting the snooze button restarts the process, but when the alarm rings again several minutes later, the process is interrupted (打断). The body has not gone through all the cycles, and this can cause the body to feel sleepy for the rest of the day. This sleepiness can affect memory, the ability to make choices, and performance at work or school.
Sleepiness may also happen if the body’s biological rhythm (节律) is interrupted. People normally fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning because their rhythms are operating naturally. The rhythms are influenced by repeating use of the snooze button, and it can cause feelings of sleepiness during the day and an inability to fall asleep at night.
People need to consider developing different routines rather than depending on the snooze button. The easiest choice is to put the alarm on the other side of the room. You need to get out of bed to turn it off and it will decrease the possibility of hitting the snooze button. Another choice is to just reset the alarm. Sitting your alarm for 30 minutes later will make the whole sleep process longer instead of always restarting it.
Though a few extra minutes of sleep may seem to promise a better start to the day, hitting that snooze button creates an unhealthy sleep pattern.
42. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ________.
A. what unhealthy sleep patterns most people have
B. what people should do to feel fully rested in the daytime
C. why people feel like going back to sleep after first waking up
D. why a few minutes of sleep after first waking up causes bad influence

A. Hitting the snooze button helps people fall asleep at night.
B. People wake up because their biological rhythms are stopped.
C. Putting the alarm a bit far from the bed helps form healthy sleep habits.
D. Getting up several minutes later helps people feel more energetic.
45. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Don’t Wake Up Late! B. Don’t Touch That Button!

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named "DriveLAB" in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the main stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the main reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝)and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle(汽车内的)technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom-made navigation(导航)tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: "For many older people, especially those living alone or in the country, driving is important for keeping their independence(独立), giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to depend on others."
"But we all have to accept that as we get older, our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to."
Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: "The Drivel-AB is helping us to understand what the main stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to assist(帮助)them and solve these problems."
"For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they tried hard to keep at a constant speed and some were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at the advantages of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that."
"We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案)to make sure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel."
42. What is the purpose of the Drivel-AB?
A. To teach people traffic rules. B. To design new types of cars.
C. To find out older drivers' problems. D. To explore new means of transport.
43. Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe?
A. It keeps them independent. B. It helps them save time.
C. It builds up their strength. D. It cures their spiritual illnesses.
44. What do researchers hope to do for older drivers?
A. Improve their driving skills. B. Develop driver-assist technologies.
C. Provide tips on repairing their cars. D. Organize regular physical examinations.
45 What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Model Electric Car B. A Way to Solve Traffic Problems
C. Driving Services for Elders D. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road
