    Unit 3  Language in use

    设计说明

    本单元是复习单元,集中总结和练习原因、目的和结果状语从句的结构和用法复习巩固本模块的重点单词、短语和句型。本单元从指导学生朗读Language practice中的句子入手,引入语法的集中讲解与练习。除语法专项训练外,本单元还安排了词汇、听力和会话的训练以及拓展视野的Around the world栏目。在本单元的末尾安排的是实践性环节——写一位英雄。所有这些环节的设置,旨在提升学生的语言运用能力。

    教学目标

    通过本单元的教学,让学生达成以下目标:

    1. 知识目标:

    (1)复习本模块新单词、短语及句型。

    (2)总结原因、目的和结果状语从句的结构和用法

    2. 能力目标:

    (1)能够运用原因、目的和结果状语从句

    (2)能够独立完成一篇描述自己心目中的英雄的短文。

    3. 情感目标:

    崇尚英雄人物,提升自己的境界。

    重点:掌握本模块的重点单词、短语和句子

    难点:掌握原因、目的和结果状语从句的结构和用法

    Step 1 Review

    1. Ask the students to read the new words and expressions in Module 3.

    2. Get some students to read the conversation in Unit 1 in different roles.

    3. Get the students to read the passage in Unit 2 on their own.

    Step 2  Language practice

    1. Read the sentences in the box to the class.

     

     

     

     

     

    2. Get the students to read the sentences.

    3. Encourage some of them to repeat the sentences.

    Step 3  Grammar

    一、原因状语从句

    because引导原因状语从句,意为“因为”,说明原因。

    John didn’t go to school yesterday because he was ill.

    昨天约翰没去上学,因为他生病了。

    She didn’t attend the meeting because she was in Guangzhou then.

    她没参加会议,因为那时她在广州。

    [拓展]

    since也可引导原因状语从句,意为“既然”,往往表示明显的、众所周知的原因,没有because强烈。

    Since everyone is here, let’s begin our party.

    既然大家都来了,咱们的聚会开始吧。

    二、so引导的结果状语从句

    so 作连词, 意为“因此, 所以”,引导结果状语从句。

    It was raining heavily, so we had to stay at home.

    雨下得很大, 所以我们不得不待在家里。

    We were very tired, so we had a short rest.

    我们非常累,所以我们稍微休息了一下。

    [注意]

    sobecause不能同时用于一个句子中。

    三、so that引导的目的状语从句

    so that 表示“以便;为的是”,引导目的状语从句,从句中通常有will, would, can, be able to等。

    They worked hard so that they would get better grades.

    他们努力学习,为的是取得更好的成绩。

    We got up early so that we could catch the first bus.

    我们早早起床,以便能赶上第一班公共汽车。

    Step 4  Practice

    1. Complete the passage with because, so or so that.

    Yury Gagarin (1934-1968) was an astronaut of the Soviet Union who became the first human in space. At school, the teachers liked Gagarin (1) ________ he was clever and worked hard. In 1960, Gagarin became one of the twenty astronauts in a space programme. Gagarin trained hard (2) __________ he could travel into space.

        Gagarin was not tall, (3) ________ he got the chance to fly the small spaceship, the Vostok I. On 12th April 1961, Gagarin took off for space. After almost two hours, he landed safely back on earth. He became famous around the world and travelled a lot to tell people of his experience in space.

    2. Join the sentences with because, so or so that. There may be more than one answer.

    (1) Ask the students to work in pairs and read the sentences in Activity 2 on Page 22. Then connect the sentences to make as many new sentences as possible.

    (2) Check answers as a class.

    1 Norman Bethune wanted to help people so he became a doctor.

    Norman Bethune became a doctor because he wanted to help people.

    2 Norman Bethune invented new tools for operations so that he could help the wounded soldiers.

    3 We know what life was like in the capital city of the Northern Song Dynasty because Zhang Zeduan painted a picture about it.

    Zhang Zeduan painted a picture about life in the capital city of the Northern Song Dynasty, so we know about it.

    3. Work in pairs. Ask and answer.

    (1) Ask the students to read the sentences in the form.

    (2) Practice conversation in pairs. One asks questions with Why did?; the other answers with full sentences, using because. For example:

    A: Why did Norman Bethune go to Spain?

    B: He went to Spain because he wanted to help the wounded soldiers.

    (3) Ask some pairs to show their conversation for their classmates.

    Step 5  Vocabulary

    1. Complete the sentences with the correct form of the words in the box.

    Check answers in pairs. Then check them as a class.

    2. Get the students to read the following expressions; make sure they can understand them. Then complete the sentences with the correct form of them.

    Step 6  Listening

    1. Ask the students to read the questions and answers in Activity 6 on Page 23 before listening.

    2. Play the recording for them to listen to and choose the correct answer. Play the recording twice if necessary.

    3. Check answers as a class.

    4. Play the recording again and show the tapescript at the same time.

    Tapescript:

    Stan Lee is a writer. He created many of our favourite heroes. Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk and the Silver Surfer are just three of them. In his stories, the heroes always win in the end. When he was young, he loved to watch his favourite actors in films. He wanted to create cartoon people just like them. He thought they were heroes because they were brave and did not worry about danger. Real people in his life also helped Stan. His teacher told great stories, and made him love reading. The books he read, especially books by famous writers like Charles Dickens and Mark Twain, made him want to write. His mother was always proud of him, and told him his work was good.

    Children often ask Stan how they can become writers. He tells them to read. He says they should read everything, not just their favourite kinds of books, or books by famous writers. He says that reading is the best way to learn to write. Stan hopes that teachers can made children want to learn. They can make history, geography, languages and science exciting. He says teachers should be more like actors, and make learning interesting.

    Step 7  Reading

    1. Read the passage and choose the best title.

    (1) Tell the students to read the four titles.

       a) My favourite book

    b) Homer’s adventure

    c) A great Greek hero — Odysseus

    d) A famous journey

    (2) Play the recording and ask the students to choose the best title. Allow them to read the passage if they cant decide on the right title.

    (3) Check the answer as a class.

    Answer:

    (4) Now ask the students to read the passage and number the events in the order they happen.

    a) Odysseus gets together with his wife and son.

    b) Many of Odysseus’s friends are killed.

    c) Odysseus and his friends fight in Troy.

    d) Odysseus and his friends go to Troy.

    e)  There is a great storm on their way home.

    (5) Check ideas as a class. Then allow the students to check by reading the passage again.

    Step 8  Around the world

    (1) Ask the students to look at the picture carefully.

    (2) Ask them to read the passage.

    Step 9  Writing

    1. Ask the students to work in pairs. Make a list of the heroes they can think of.

    2. Ask the students to choose a hero and find out more facts about him or her in books, newspapers and on the Internet.

    3. Ask the students to write about their heroes.

    4. Encourage some students to read his or her passage to the class.

    Step 10  Homework

    1. Go over what you’ve learnt in Unit 3.

    2. Preview the new words and expressions in Module 4.
