起初，刘（翔）被鼓励参加跳高训练。

encourage sb. to do sth. 意为“鼓励某人做某事”，其被动形式为be encouraged to do sth. （被鼓励做某事）。

The teachers often encourage students to ask questions.

老师们经常鼓励学生提问题。

被动句：Students are often encouraged to ask questions by the teachers.

2．In 1998, Liu Xiang’s ability in hurdling was noticed by Sun Haiping...

在1998年，刘翔跨栏赛跑的能力被孙海平注意到……

ability 用作名词，意为“能力”。表示“在某方面的能力”用介词in。

常用短语：have the ability to do sth. 有能力做某事。

Tom has the ability to solve the problem. 汤姆有解决这个问题的能力。

3. From 2008 on, he suffered a lot from his foot problem, but he did not give up. 从2008年开始，他饱受脚伤的折磨，但是他没有放弃。

suffer from意为“受（某种疾病）折磨，因……而受苦”。

People sometimes suffer from a bad cold. 有时，人们受重感冒的折磨。

stop sb. from （doing ）sth. 意为“阻止某人做某事”，相当于keep sb. from doing sth. 。
