Zheng Qinwen announced herself as a major new force in women’s tennis with an import French Open debut (首秀) last month. Now the Chinese teenager hopes the fighting spirit she showed at the Grand Slam (大满贯) tournament can encourage kids starting out in the sport to chase their dreams on the court with the same determination.
“If tennis is your dream, I think you always have to fight for your dream. Because we only have one life, you shouldn’t have any regrets,” Zheng said last week in an interview.
The 19-year-old showed she possesses the talent to be a contender at the very top level of tennis with a breakout campaign at French Open.
Accounting for two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep along the way, Zhengs journey was ended in the fourth round by a three-set defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Zheng, though gave the Polish world No. 1 a big scare, battling back from 3-0 down in the first set to force, and win, a tiebreak (平分决胜局)。
“That was the first time I had played the world No.1, so I really wanted to grab this chance so I could judge her level and test myself,” said Zheng. “I didn’t want to give her the match so easy like that. It was pretty difficult for me to hold on in that match because of what my body was going through, but I wanted to show her I'm not easily beaten.
Looking back at Zheng Qinwen’s performances in this year’s French Open, there’s no doubt that she’s a true fighter. Zheng says she avoids being discouraged by higher-ranked opponents by simply focusing on the next point, one shot at a time.Supported by her team, she hopes she can one day win a Grand Slam title.
Zheng’s impressive French Open run has inevitably led to comparisons with China’s solitary Grand Slam singles championLi Na, who won the 2011 French Open and 2014 Australian Open titles.
“When I was a kid, Li Na showed that Asian people also can do something really good in tennis. She was the first one. I will just focus on my own game and then let’s see if I can really compete at the highest level,” said Zheng.
4. What does the underlined word “contender” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Organizer. B. Announcer. C. Competitor. D. Designer.
5. What is the result of the match between Zheng and Ign Swiatek?
A. Iga Swiatek beat Zheng easily.
B. Zheng lost to Iga Swiatek at last.
C. Zheng won the match despite her pain.
D. Iga Swiatek lost because of her mistakes.
6. Why is Li Na mentioned in paragraph 7?
A. To explain why Li Na has achieved a lot
B. To prove failure is the mother of success.
C. To show how excellent Zheng Qinwen is.
D To compare the difference between Zheng Qinwen and LI Na
7. Which of the following can best describe Zheng Qinwen?
A. Optimistic and generous.
B. Struggling and determined
C. Independent and helpful.
D. Adventurous and realistic.
C
Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiarity - but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually .The first, which I take to reading every spring is Emest Hemningway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的),an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortazar.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifs, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
8. Why does the author like rereading?
A. It evaluates the writer-reader relationship.
B. It’s a window to a whole new world.
C. It’s a substitute for drinking with a friend.
D. It extends the understanding of oneself.
9. What do we know about the book A Moveable Feast?
A. It’s a brief account of a trip.
B. It’s about Hemingway’s life as a young man.
C. It’s a record of a historic event.
D. It’s about Hemingway’s friends in Paris.
10. What does the underlined word "currency" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Debt
B. Reward.
C. Allowance.
D. Face value.
11. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A. He loves poetry.
B. He’s an editor.
C. He’s very ambitious.
D. He teaches reading.
D
Although it has been revealed in recent years that plants are capable of seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thought of as silent. But now, for the first time, they have been recorded making ultrasonic cries when stressed, which researchers say could open up a new field of precision agriculture where farmers listen for water-starved crops.
Itzhak Khait and his colleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that tomato and tobacco plants made cries at frequencies humans cannot hear when stressed by a lack of water or when their stem is cut.
Microphones placed 10 centimetres from the plants picked up sounds in the ultrasonic range of 20 to 100 kilohertz, which the team says insects and some mammals would be capable of hearing and responding to from as far as 5 metres away. A moth may decide against laying eggs on a plant that sounds water-stressed, the researchers suggest. Plants could even hear that other plants are short of water and react accordingly, they speculate.
On average, drought-stressed tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour, while tobacco plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour, and tobacco plants 15. Unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour, on average.
It is even possible to distinguish between the sounds to know what the stress is. The researchers trained a machine-learning model to discriminate between the plants’ sounds and the wind, rain and other noises of the greenhouse, correctly identifying in most cases whether the stress was caused by dryness or a cut, based on the sound’s intensity and frequency. Water-hungry tobacco appears to make louder sounds than cut tobacco, for example.
Enabling farmers to listen for water-stressed plants could “open a new direction in the field of precision agriculture”, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly important as climate change exposes more areas to drought.
“The suggestion that the sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture seems feasible if it is not too costly to set up the recording in a field situation,” says Anne Visscher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.
She warns that the results can’t yet be broadened out to other stresses, such as salt or temperature, because these may not lead to sounds. In addition, there have been no experiments to show whether moths or any other animal can hear and respond to the sounds the plants make, so that idea remains speculative(推测的)for now, she says.
12. The experiment by researchers at Tel Aviv University shows that_______.
A tobacco plants make louder sounds than tomato plants when hurt
B. water-hungry tomato plants are more sensible than tobacco plants
C. unstressed plants produced sounds of laughter when being watered
D. plants respond to the sounds the plants make and protect themselves
13. What is Anne Visscher’s attitude towards the finding of the experiment?
A. Appreciative B. Doubtful
C. Cautious D. Optimistic
14. It can be learnt from the research that ________.
A. greenhouse effects can be avoided
B. soil condition can be adjusted in time.
C. plant condition can be diagnosed faster.
D. insects can be detected and removed easily.
15. What is the best title for the article?
A. Plants Get Stressed Just Like Us
B. Plants Scream in Presence of Stress
C. Sounds of Plants Detected Far Away
D. Sounds of Plants Break Farmers’ Hearts

Have you noticed how some lucky people just aren’t the worrying type? Take my friend Olline, for example. Living on the same block, we’ve known each other since we were babies, and I’ve seen him act worried maybe five times total. I, on the other hand, am pretty much the exact opposite.
I could find something to worry about every day.
At my karate(空手道) school, there’s a group of kids that gives karate lessons to younger kids, and I recently tried out to be one of the teachers.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t that nervous for the tryouts(选拔). But when I didn’t get the call saying if I was in or out, I started feeling more and more nervous. Before long, my nervousness turned into worrying, and when it came to thinking about anything else or getting anything done, I was useless! So after lunch yesterday, when my little brother Tex asked me to play basketball with him, I could only say, “I can’t. I’m busy!” “Busy with what?” my little sister, Indi, asked. “Busy waiting for the phone to ring!” I grumbled.
“You’re reminding me of that old saying,” said our mom. “A watched pot never boils!” “The more you focus on the thing you’re waiting for, the longer it seems to take,” she explained when seeing my brother’s puzzling eyes.
Just then, the phone rang, and I raced to grab it. “Hello?” “Hey,” said Ollie. “Oh, it’s just you,”
I said. “Wow, you sure know how to make a friend feel special!” said Ollie. “I’m sorry. It’s just that I’ve been waiting for a call telling me if I made it into this karate group, and it’s stressing me out.” “I get it,” said Ollie. “I remember being so stressed waiting to find out if I’d made it onto the select soccer team last year. The best cure was distracting(使分心) myself.”
I was surprised. “It thought you never worried.” “I’m pretty sure that’s part of being human,” said Ollie. “And I’m also pretty sure I have just the thing to distract you. Want me to bring it over?” he asked.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Hmm,” I said suspiciously. “What exactly is this thing?”

【答案】 Should Senior High Students Stay up for study?
With the learning task increasing in high school, more and more high school students are beginning to stay up late to study. Some students are in favor of staying up late to study, while others are against it.
Some think that staying up all night studying often does harm to the development and health of students. Not enough sleep will have an impact on our health, leading to a decrease in learning efficiency. Others believe that they can make full use of the night time to make up for the missed time during the day, improving their grades.
In my opinion, I object to staying up all night studying, because it is not beneficial to our health and study in the long run.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 “Hmm,” I said suspiciously. “What exactly is this thing?”
“Trust me. You’ll love her!” In just a minute Ollie came over with the cutest puppy imaginable!“Her name is Daisy,” he said. “We’re taking care of her while her owners are out of town.” Of course, Tex and Indi jumped up and down as soon as they saw Daisy, and the four of us spent all afternoon trying to teach her to catch a ball, play chase and sit for doggy treats.
By the end of the day, we were all worn out and Daisy the dog even fell sound asleep, when suddenly my mom called from the kitchen, “Zona! Telephone.”
“Hello?” I said excitedly. But that was the end of the excitement. It turned out there was only one opening in the group, and I didn’t get it. “Hey, it’s not so bad,” Ollie said, handing me the sleepy little puppy. “You can try out again next year, right?” I shrugged. “I guess.” Then the sleeping Daisy opened her eyes, picked up her head, and gave me the biggest, wettest lick on my face, and I couldn’t stop laughing.
