    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

    A

It is such a common occurrence that no one ever wonders from where it came. But the telephone has a fascinating story behind it. It is the story of Alexander Graham Bell.

He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847. The son of a man who was bitten by the workings of the human voice, how it is produced and used, and especially teaching the deaf how to use it, young Alexander Graham Bell grew up with his father’s such strong feelings.

In 1870, because of poor health, he migrated to Canada. It was not long before his success in teaching the deaf to speak brought him to the attention of a wealthy merchant in Boston who wanted Bell to help her daughter, Mabel. Finally, Mr. Bell and Mabel fell in love. It was she who inspired him to develop the remarkable instrument that transformed speech into electrical impulses(脉冲) that could then be changed back into human speech at the end of a wire. In 1877, he and Mabel were married. He later became an American citizen.

Alexander Graham Bell was showered with the praise of the world. Honors came to him from all the points of the compass. He went on to other discoveries, many of them. But in his own view, he was most proud of his efforts to help the deaf. So, when the government of France awarded him the Volta Prize for inventing the telephone, he combined this monetary award with the money he made from selling the patent on another invention to establish the Volta Bureau in Washington, D. C. Its purpose was to fund research on deafness. Today, it is called the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Its role has been changed to providing the latest information for the deaf of the world on how best to deal with their disability.

    21. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “bitten by”?

    A. Fed up with.  B. Familiar with.  C. In harmony with.  D. Enthusiastic about.

    22. What does the author say about Bell?

    B. He taught the deaf to use telephones.

    C. He was funded by a merchant.

    D. He was inspired by his father to invent telephones.

    23. What may the paragraph that follows be about?

    A. The development of the Association.

    B. Examples of Bell’s other inventions.

    C. Something about Bell’s family.

    D. Bell’s death and his influence.

A new course on world heritage and its conservation offers a good opportunity for the young people to learn about the legacy(遗产) of humanity and gain a sense of responsibility to help protect the planet we live on.

According to a world heritage education programme jointly launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and China’s Ministry of Education, the course will first be offered at several schools in Beijing before being included as a mandatory course(必修课) for high school students nationwide.

The new course covers photos, slide shows and documentaries on the magnificence of the world heritage sites. The class aims to tell children what world heritage is and why and how it should be protected. A total of 177 nations, including China, have signed the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Listed are 754 sites all over the world, of which 29 are in China—the third most after Spain and Italy. Currently, protection of the country’s cultural and natural resources leaves much to be desired. Education is undoubtedly the best way to cultivate people’s sense for protecting cultural and natural resources.

The introduction of such a programme in Chinese classrooms will certainly help our young people realize the significance of common heritage, learning about world heritage sites, the history and traditions of different cultures, ecology, and the importance of protecting biological and cultural diversity.

More importantly, it will help cultivate a sense of responsibility in the minds of young participants. This is critical in protecting these cultural and natural legacies, as well as our living environment and the limited resources for sustainable development.

    24. Which of the statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The world heritage education programme was jointly launched by the United States and China’s Ministry of Education.

    B. The course will first be offered at all the schools in Beijing.

    C. Protection of the country’s cultural and natural resources has been perfect thanks to people’s efforts.

    D. China ranks high among the countries with 29 sites listed on the list.

    25. What can you expect to learn at the class?

    A. What world heritage is.

    B. Why we should protect heritage.

    C. How world heritage should be protected.

    D. All of the above.

    26. The underlined word “cultivate” in the third paragraph probably means “________”.

    A. distribute    B. exploit   C. develop   D. improvise

    27. What’s the purpose of the passage?

    A. To inform us of the reason for protecting the heritage.

    B. To tell us the way to protect the heritage.

    C. To tell us a new course.

    D. To tell us heritage preservation starts with education.

    C

“A writer is always alone, always an outsider,” Ernest Hemingway said. Others said that of the many people he created in his books, Hemingway was his own best creation.

Ernest Hemingway, born in 1899, grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, near the West Side of the city of Chicago. His father, Clarence Edmonds, was a doctor. His mother liked to paint and play the piano. Each summer the family traveled to their holiday home in northern Michigan. Hemingway’s father taught him how to catch fish, hunt, set up a camp and cook over a fire. At home, Hemingway always wrote for his school newspaper, imitating the language of a famous sportswriter of that time, Ring Lardner. He developed his writing skills this way.

In 1917, Hemingway decided not to go to a university and found a job with The Kansas City Star newspaper in Kansas City, Missouri. He reported news from the hospital, police headquarters, and the railroad station. One reporter remembered: Hemingway liked to be where the action was.” The Kansas City Star demanded that its reporters write short sentences. It wanted reporters to see the unusual details in an incident. Hemingway quickly learned to do both. He worked for the newspaper only six months. Then Hemingway left the newspaper and attempted to join the U.S. Army so that he could fight in World War Ⅰ. But the Army rejected him for his eyesight was not good enough, so he responded to a Red Cross recruitment(征募) effort and signed on to become an ambulance driver in Italy.

His job was to drive a Red Cross truck carrying the wounded away from battle. He went as close to the fighting as possible to see how he would act in the face of danger. Before long, the war ended. Hemingway returned to the United States. Less than a year had passed since he went to Europe. But in that short time he had changed forever. He needed to write about what he had seen.

Ernest Hemingway left home for Chicago to prove himself. But he ran out of money and began to write for a newspaper again. The Canadian newspaper, the Toronto Star, liked his reports about life in Chicago and paid him well.

In Chicago, Hemingway met the writer Sherwood Anderson, who was one of the first writers in America to write about the lives of common people. Hemingway saw that Anderson’s stories showed life as it really was, the way Hemingway was trying to do. Anderson gave Hemingway advice on his writing. He told Hemingway to move to Paris, which was full of young artists and writers from all over the world.

So Hemingway decided to move to Paris. Paris was cold and gray when Hemingway and his wife arrived in 1921. They lived in one of the poorer parts of the city. Their rooms were small and had no running water. But the Toronto Star employed him as its European reporter, so there was enough money for the two of them to live. And the job gave Hemingway time to write his stories.

Hemingway’s first book of stories was called In Our Time, which included a story called Big Two-Hearted River about the effect of war on a young man. Big Two-Hearted River is considered one of the best modern American stories. The story shows the young man trying to forget his past, especially trying to forget the war. The reader learns about the young man, not because Hemingway tells us what the young man thinks, but because he shows the young man learning about himself. Another long story, The Sun Also Rises, is about young Americans in Europe after World War Ⅰ. The war had destroyed their dreams. And it had given them nothing to replace those dreams. The writer Gertrude Stein later called these people members of the “Lost Generation”. The book was an immediate success.

Many people, however, could not recognize Hemingway’s art because they did not like what he wrote about. Hemingway’s sentences were short, the way he had been taught to write at The Kansas City Star newspaper. He wrote about what he knew and felt. He used few descriptive words. His statements were clear and easily understood.

    28. How did Hemingway develop his writing skills at school?

    A. By working part-time for a newspaper.

    B. By taking professional writing courses.

    C. By writing for his college newspaper.

    D. By learning from a famous sportswriter.

    29. Why wasn’t Hemingway allowed to join the Army?

    A. Because of his low education.

    B. Because of his parents’ strong opposition.

    C. Because of his poor ability to see.

    D. Because of his disadvantaged political background.

    30. What does the underlined sentence mean?

    A. Hemingway enjoyed collecting news material on the scene.

    B. Hemingway took action actively to fight against war.

    C. Hemingway was eager to broaden his horizons.

    D. Hemingway had loads of life experience.

    31. Why did Hemingway move to Paris?

Hollywood movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you want is a little lighthearted entertainment.

Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. 36  Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood’s Oscars, turn 50 years old.

The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a teaspoon of comedy, a dash of international sightseeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie. 37

Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries.   38 The actors change clothes and locations within a single song. But the audience don’t mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all.

39 Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can’t just run away. They must win over their parents.

Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those overstimulating Hollywood films. 40 They will take you to a brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it’s still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love song.

    A. Bollywood has gradually won its reputation on the world stage.

    B. There is never any mention of politics, poverty or war.

    C. Most Chinese school kids have probably never seen an Indian film.

    D. Bollywood films are mostly comic romances with lighthearted incidental music.

    E. Bollywood pays great attention to traditional values.

    F. The result is a fun-filled musical.

    G. So if you’re tired of all that Hollywood actions, check out the following Bollywood films.

    第二节书面表达(满25分)

    Dear Peter,

How is everything going recently? I’m writing to invite you to go back to our senior high school to celebrate her 100th anniversary. It has been 20 years since we graduated from high school. Do you still remember the days we spent studying and playing together? Till now, these memories remain fresh.

As I know, the celebration will last for 3 days from October 1st to October 3rd. Schoolmates will gather to meet their old friends. An evening party will be held to feast people’s eyes. At the party, folk songs will be performed, poem recitation and students’ group dance included. When we meet, I suppose money should be raised to set up a scholarship which is used to provide financial support for the students from rural areas. What do you think about it?

I am looking forward to your early coming.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
