Since our twins began to walk, my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding glass door is just a window. The reason is clear. If we admit(承认)it is a door, they will want to go outside again and again. It will drive us crazy. The kids surely know the 15 but we insist that it’s only a window, which has kept them from 16 in opening the door.

I wonder if 19 should always tell the truth no matter the consequence(结果). I have a strong 20 that the lie we are telling is doing mentally harm to our children. Windows and doors have important metaphorical(比喻) meanings. I’m telling them they can’t open what they surely know is a door. What if later in 21 they come to a metaphorical door, like a chance to get a well-paid job, and 22 opening the door and taking the chance, they just look at it and wonder, “What if it isn’t a door? That is, ‘What if it isn’t a 23 chance?’”
Maybe there is no need to have such fear. But I shouldn’t lie to my kids. I have regretted having told lies. I should just keep saying, “No, we can’t go outside now.” Then when they come to other doors in life, real or metaphorical, they won’t hesitate(犹豫) to open them and walk 24 .

Dear Audrey,
You are much older now, and hopefully wiser, although sometimes that’s not the case. You have probably forgotten about me.
I’m 12-year-old you feeling terribly nervous and stressed, hating online learning, in this horrible pandemic... I could go on and on. Does this bring any memory back to you?
Anyway, maybe there are time machines in the time where you are, but there aren’t any here, so I’m doing the next best thing: I’m writing you a letter that I hope you read every year on New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve.
I’ve come from 2022 to remind you not to forget. I’m sitting on my bed right now, tears still on my face from a fight with my mom (I love her more than anything or anyone, but we’ve spent too much time together), and aware of the light blue masks hanging on the hooks next to the door in my kitchen. In a way, it still feels like March, when this whole crazy thing started. I’m sick of it.
I am begging you to remember. I didn’t get to spend Thanksgiving with my beloved grandparents, when I’d been waiting so long to act normally(正常地) with them. Now, it looks like I won’t be spending Christmas with them normally either.
I am having a hard time and would do anything to get out of this pandemic, to see my friends and family normally. You are able to do that. You have what I want so badly. So please, I strongly advise you to enjoy your life, your friends, your family, your experiences.
Remember—everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matter in this modern-day world.
Love your life, and be filled with joy this year.
Sincerely,
You, age 12, Audrey in 2022, the Pandemic Year.

At home during suppertime, Pete announced, “Baba Olena wants us to come for Easter dinner.” Mom shook her head, “That’s sweet, but I don’t think so.” Dad laughed, “I wouldn’t want to seem rude if I didn’t like her cooking. Can you tell her thanks but we already have plans?”
Pete sighed. His parents hardly knew Baba Olena. They didn’t know about her pastries (糕点) and funny sayings. All they saw was an Ukrainian woman with strange hair and a yard full of chickens.
On Easter Sunday, they passed Baba Olena’s house as they headed for Dixie’s Diner. When they arrived, they found the diner was dark, and no cars were in front of it. “What?” said Dad. “They’re always open!” “Not today,” Mom said. “Guess we’ll be making sandwiches.”
Across the street, Baba Olena stepped out of the house, waving to them.
Pete shouted, “Looks like Baba’s expecting us.” “We can’t go there,” Dad said, but Baba was hurrying over. “You came! I’m so happy,” she said. “This morning I saw the diner is closed and thought maybe you will come.”
Inside, Pete’s parents sat stiff (僵硬地) as yardsticks while Baba was busy with her pastries happily.
Dad looked at something red on the table. “What’s this?” “Beet (甜菜) salad. I use the juice for my hair.” Baba and Pete smiled at each other.
“And this—” She set down bowls of what looked like little half-moon pastries—“is Ukrainian stuffed dumplings. These have cabbage filling; those have potato. No crane today.”
Mum looked at her, open-mouthed.
Pete laughed and explained about the “crane” chips. Dad and Mum laughed, too.
Mum took a small bite. “Delicious!” “Oh, good you like it.” Baba said.
By the time she cut the round Easter bread, everyone was talking. “Now I see why Pete wanted to eat here,” Dad said. Mum nodded. “And why he speaks highly of you nonstop.”
Later, Baba brought out the basket of eggs. “It’s an old Ukrainian tradition to play with Easter eggs,” she said. “See, Pete, hold yours to mine, end to end, like this. The egg that doesn’t break, wins.”
Pete held his egg ready. “I already won something,” he said.

Your smartphone isn’t listening to you—but does secretly watch everything you do.
Scientists made the finding while finding out the long-held rumor(传闻) that apps are able to control microphones in smartphones to secretly record audio to help them better target(把……对准某群体) advertisements showed online.
Smartphone users have complained of the frightening feeling for years—their apps are listening to their every word, but the new study couldn’t prove the practice had ever taken place.
Scientists did an experiment that tested 17,260 of the most popular Android apps, including many owned by Facebook. Of those surveyed, more than half had the right to enter users’ camera and microphone, allowing them to activate the features(激活该功能) any time the app was open. Researchers didn’t find that any were secretly recording using the built-in microphone.
The latest findings dispel the rumor that apps like Facebook sometimes record conversations and send keywords to third parties to help them target ads.
Users have complained that after chatting about some topics or tourist attractions, relevant(相关的) ads will often appear across their apps. A closer look at the results shows that while apps are not listening, some do often record footage(镜头,片段) and screenshots of what users are doing. The software then send this information to a third party for analysis.
Researchers caught one app, GoPuff, recording the screens of users and sending the footage to mobile analytics company Appsee. The app, which has been downloaded more than 100,000 times from Google Play Store, took footage of a screen that asked for customers to list their post code. Once this problem was brought to our attention, the company immediately cleared all recording data from our servers.
34.What has worried smartphone users for years?
A.Their phones spy on(监视) them every moment.
B.Third parties may control their smartphone apps.
C.They become the target of online advertisements.
D.Some apps shoot video of their actions.
35.What does the underlined word “dispel” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Spread. B. Prove. C. Explain. D. Remove.
36.Why do third parties receive footage from some apps?
A.To collect personal postcodes for better delivery.
B.To target the customers for their ads better.
C.To analyze and protect personal information.
D.To provide better service for phone owners.
37.What is the best title for the text?
A.Are those apps harmful to you? B.Is your phone watching you?
C.Do you worry about using your cellphone? D.Are you being tested by your phone?

Red Cross volunteers travel on horseback to help herders (牧民) in Golog, Qinghai Province. They offer the herders modern medical care and service.
Zhou Tai, a head of the Red Cross Society of China, said that tapeworm infection (绦虫感染) is one of the main diseases affecting the herders.
The disease can be treated by surgery. However, for a long time, the herders prefer to turn to traditional methods like asking a lama (喇嘛) for much advice rather than go to a doctor. Some of them delayed (耽误) treatment because they wanted to choose a certain date that the lama told them was lucky.
The volunteers’ major job is to educate local people about medical science, and they use real cases to warn people of the results of tapeworms.
Zhou said that more than half of the villagers accept their suggestions, such as going to hospital and isolating patients at home.
However, in tradition, some people still share bowls and chopsticks with family members who have tapeworms, which helps spread the disease. Realizing the importance of medical science still has a long way to go.
Every year, volunteers go to provide services like giving free health care to the elderly, explaining local medical treatment policies, teaching them how to use medicine correctly and giving out donations when the area suffers floods and snowstorms. Since then, they have helped cure 67 people.
Transportation here is inconvenient because of the hard places with mountains, so they came up with the idea that volunteers ride horses to provide medical services. In addition, it is a wide area with a few people, and volunteers need to ride about 30 kilometers from one family to another, which is hard work.
Riding a horse is the simplest yet most effective way to deliver (传递) service and love from the Red Cross Society.
“Smiles from herders are the best encouragement for us to continue,” he said.
