    Travel with Kids to Pittsburgh
This is an exciting time to visit Pittsburgh. The city and surrounding region is now perfect for family fun. Here are some of Pittsburgh’s must-visit family attractions:
Eat Pie at Sand Hill Berries
The homemade pies at Sand Hill Berries are better than what’s found on any kids menu, and everyone loves fresh fruit pie! The family farm has been growing strawberries and blackberries since 1981, using the fruit for homemade jams and pies. It’s worth a drive to the farm’s lovely outdoor Cabin Cafe. Kids and adults will enjoy a slice of pie in what feels like a secret garden.
    Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh
For active kids with energy to burn, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is a perfect place. Kids can play in the Garage—an interactive area that includes a parachute (降落伞) launcher and toy car raceways. At the Makeshop, kids use skills to create a take-home piece of woodworking or sewing. Museum exhibits change often and make for fresh repeat visits.
    Fort Ligonier
History comes to life at Fort Ligonier, a re-created fort (兵营) from the French and Indian War located in Ligonier—about an hour’s drive east of the city. Here, kids can learn about George Washington—he served at the fort more than 250 years ago! Costumed soldiers demonstrate daily life, including welcoming visitors to where they slept, ate and prepared for battle. In October, the village of Ligonier hosts the annual Fort Ligonier Days with live music, performances, fireworks and more.
    Just Ducky Tour
Pittsburgh’s Just Ducky Tour takes riders from land to water on one boat! The jeep-like boats start on land for a driving tour of the business and cultural districts of downtown, before driving into the river! The tour guide makes an effort to tell fun stories about the landmarks. Kids will love the group participation and enjoy the excitement of driving right into the river!

Childhood is a time of limitless possibilities. And old age is the time of wisdom. But for children who face the monster of cancer, their lives are fast-forwarded into profound wisdom. Not only do they have hand-to-hand struggle with the limits of life, they face it with raw truth and courage. For them, life is hard-won yet full of unbelievable hope, and is to be lived to the fullest.
We have much to learn from these children.
That’s what art therapist (治疗专家), Lisa Murray, believed as she worked to help children with cancer to release their feelings through their drawings, which have turned into a book, Angels & Monsters.
Murray found that in their struggle, kids would tell her constantly, “I’m just a regular kid; I just want to play, to go to school, to go outside... I just happen to have cancer. ”
She was moved and inspired by their simple will to survive. The children were facing the disease head on. She saw some powerful images in their artwork. “What courage it takes to do that,” said Murray.
Murray selected 25 children aged 13 months to 18 years. She asked the four-year-olds and up, “If you could tell the world what it is like to have cancer, what would you say, what would you draw?” For two-to-three-year-olds, she asked, “What do you want to tell people about yourself?” And for the youngest, she just took their handprints. “It’s such a human expression, ‘Here’s my mark,’ ” said Murray.
She then asked them about their pictures, and wrote down exactly what they said. This gave the artwork a powerful voice. Coupled with Murray’s photographs of the children in the book, the three forms of expression leave both a permanent record and lasting impression with the viewer.
As a therapist, Murray doesn’t give the kids the impression that the drawing process is right or wrong. Whatever they draw is unconditionally acceptable. “Children play, they draw, and that’s the natural language of children. That’s why art therapy is so wonderful,” she said.
4、Why does Murray ask children with cancer to draw pictures?
    A. To help them to gain wisdom. B. To help them deal with cancer.
    C. To turn the pictures into a book. D. To let people know more about them.
5、What are “the three forms of expression” about the children?
    A. Their drawings, their voices and the book.
    B. Their drawings, their handprints and the book.
    C. Their drawings, their words and the photos of them.
    D. Their drawings, Murray’s questions and the children’s answers.
6、What does Murray do in the process of the children drawing pictures?
    A. She lets them draw whatever they like.
    B. She teaches them how to draw naturally.
    C. She gives them advice about what to draw.
    D. She makes sure what they draw are acceptable.
7、What are children with cancer like in the eyes of Murray?
    A. They are energetic and active. B. They are wise and hardworking.
    C. They are courageous and optimistic. D. They are thoughtful and kind-hearted.
It was in 2005 that Chris Jones of the University of California, Berkeley put the finishing touches on the world’s first online household carbon calculator. He hoped that, if he could show people how much greenhouse gas was associated with daily activities, they might change their behaviour and contribute in some small measure to saving the Amazon. Seventeen years later, trackers are providing a wealth of often-neglected information about the carbon emissions of everyday life.
Trackers work by asking users to answer questions such as: how many miles a year do you drive; how much is your annual household electricity bill; how often do you eat meat? They then calculate a personal or household estimate of emissions of carbon-dioxide equivalent (等价物) per year. What do they tell us?
Dr Jones describes the main household polluting activities as “cars, coal, cows and consumption, roughly in that order”. By far the largest single source of emissions is the family vehicle. Swapping it for an electric vehicle would save over 6 tonnes, or an eighth of the average American household’s yearly emissions.
No other change would elicit that much saving, though electricity in the home is responsible for over 5 tonnes of carbon emissions a year, so generating it with solar panels would come close. Like electric vehicles, a roof full of solar panels is not cheap. Changing diets costs less, and American households consume meat worth 2.7 tonnes of CO2 a year, far more than most people. If Americans went vegetarian, that would be like half an average solar roof.
Over the next 30 years, many countries are promising to move to net-zero carbon, implying that household emissions will have to be cut to close to nothing. Trackers, it seems, have daunting (令人怯步的) lessons for public bodies and private households alike.
8、Why did Dr Jones put forward the idea of carbon trackers?
    A. To keep track of household activities.
    B. To calculate the carbon emissions of everyday life.
    C. To remind people to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle.
    D. To learn how greenhouse gas was related to daily activities.
9、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A. The purpose of the invention.
    B. The targeted users of the invention.
    C. The improvement of the invention.
    D. The operating principles of the invention.
10、The underline word “elicit” in Para. 4 is closest in meaning to _______.
    A. generate B. accumulate C. manage D. consume
11、Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
    A. Trackers only give alarming lessons to private households.
    B. The largest single source of emissions is the electric vehicle.
    C. Consuming more vegetables than meat helps reduce carbon emissions.
    D. Americans vegetarians spend half of their savings building an average solar roof.
A “secretive” new species of frog has been discovered on the forest floor in India’s Western Ghat mountain range. Named the starry dwarf frog after the markings on its dark brown back, it is just 2 centimeters long.
The frog, whose closest relatives are a group of species native to India and Sri Linka, is the only member of an ancient lineage (血统) dating back to millions of years ago, according to researchers from India and the US. It is unclear whether the species is descended from African or Asian frogs.
A group of Indian and US researchers first came across the local species hidden in leaf-litter as part of a wider project to look for new frogs, lizards and snakes in the richly biodiverse region and stored it in a jar for later study. Genetic testing and a closer look at its shape, colouring and other features has shown that it doesn’t match any existing species. Kartik Shanker of the Indian Institute of Science, who helped design the study, says while it is common to find new frogs in India, this one needs to be noticed. “This particular species not just is a new species, but also belongs to a new genus(属), and that makes it a little more special,” says Shanker.
The number of known species of frog identified in India has climbed from around 200 to above 400 over the past two decades. While many species new to science are frequently immediately sorted as endangered, it is too early to say whether the starry dwarf frog is threatened. “They are very secretive,” says Shanker, adding that the team didn’t know the size of its population. The frog is active at night and lives near water.
Habitat loss is a serious risk to frogs in tropical forests around the world, alongside threats such as a deadly fungus(真菌) that has been killing off amphibians for the past four decades. But the new species was found in a reserved forest, meaning it will enjoy a degree of protection by Indian government agencies.
12、What can we learn from paragraph 3?
    A. The species was further studied.
    B. The species was found in a rich region.
    C. The species was finally set free.
    D. The species was discovered by tourists.
13、What can we say about the new frog?
    A. It is in small quantities. B. It is an endangered species.
    C. It is related to African or Asian frogs. D. It is well worth attention.
14、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Habitat loss is the chief threat to frogs.
    B. Tropical forests in India are all under protection.
    C. The new species may face less dangers.
    D. The Indian government determines to save frogs.
15、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. A rare frog species protected in India
    B. A secretive frog species discovered in India
    C. A rise in species of frog seen in India
    D. A risk of habitat loss for frogs removed in India
16、 For most people, life has become a burden on their shoulders, and its weight is growing heavier and heavier, until one day they can’t carry it anymore. So how can we design a life that is less complex and more meaningful? With minimalism (极简主义). ①________ The following ways will assist you in your journey to living a simpler yet fuller life.
②________ Most people’s living space is filled with things that are never used and don’t contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don’t, and throw the latter right into the dustbin—or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit from them.
Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We constantly compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy. ③________ We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.
Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each and every moment. We’re usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are doing, our mind is partly wondering somewhere else. ④________
Develop mindfulness. ⑤________ Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what’s happening in the present. There are many ways one can do so. Perhaps the most common way is to sit for about 30 minutes somewhere comfortably with your upper back straight and pay full attention to your breath as it’s coming in and out through your nose. In this way, you won’t be distracted by your thoughts.
    A. It is about enjoying life more with less.
    B. Stop consuming products you don’t need.
    C. Yet no matter how much we try, we always fail.
    D. Get rid of things that don’t serve your happiness.
    E. Minimalist living requires a calm and undisturbed mind.
    F. Stop multitasking and concentrate on a single thing at a time.
    G. Unfortunately, our minds are filled with worries in our busy lives.

About a month ago I noticed something really amazing, which I must call a garden miracle. It so happened that when I 1 the double doors of a small storage area in the back of my house where I 2 my garden supplies during the long, severe New England winter, I found, in one of the dirt-filled pots, a living, growing plant, topped with two of the most unlikely pink 3 you’ve ever seen.
How was this 4 ? The unheated space had been closed all winter, and it was still cold outside. Once I caught my breath, I 5 and discovered something approaching a reasonable explanation—there was a small glass window at the top of the double doors, and it was possible that a ray of sun fell directly on that pot, giving the plant just enough light and warmth to 6 it to grow in its own personal greenhouse.
I can’t help feeling 7 at the lessons this wonderful plant has to teach.
For one thing, I am moved by the coincidence of the whole thing. If I had 8 my pot six inches to the left or right of that spot, the plant might not have gotten that 9 ray of light. If I had 10 the roots of the plant in late fall, there would have been nothing but dirt in that pot.
But there’s something else that 11 me about this—just how little light and 12 it took for this plant to grow and flower. I’m not 13 we should be mean with love and kindness and all the other warming things we 14 for others and for ourselves. But isn’t it comforting to think that just a drop of 15 can brighten a day, a place, a life?

Lora’s house stood on a wooded slope not far up from the river. On a sunny morning in July, she decided to take her three kids down to the river, Mikey aged 13, Paul 8 and Lisa 5. As a nature lover, she insisted they spend as much time as possible outdoors. “We are going to pick berries now,” she announced.
The group made its way over the dusty road and then onto a dirt trail through the trees. Stopping the children at the first berry bush, “Look, the berries are all over,” she said. Mikey broke into a run to the berries. Lora and the little ones hurried to keep up. She helped Lisa find some clusters(串;簇) on the lowest branches. Paul watched and then tasted a berry. “Mmm, good,” he said, and got busy picking more.
Lora and the children moved slowly from bush to bush. Within 20 minutes, the children had filled their jars and were almost at the river. “OK,” Lora commanded after the group climbed down to the sandbank, “Let’s play just right here.”
Lora rested herself not far from the children, listening to their laughing and playing. Suddenly, she sensed the children go quiet. She looked up to see the back of a big-sized cat standing over Lisa. It was a young cougar(美洲狮). The sight of the cougar near her kids immediately froze Lora. The three kids, rooted to the spot, were too nervous to say a word. She knew she must do something.
    Paragraph 1:
The first idea that hit Lora was to attract the cougar’s attention away from her kids.

    32、答案:①competitive②released③critically④a⑤was wronged⑥worst⑦death⑧where⑨missing⑩on
故填a。
故填was wronged。
one of意为"……之一",后接形容词要用最高级形式worst。故填worst。

    ⑧考查定语从句。句意:这部电影发生在岳去世四年后,围绕着一起发生在当时最有权势的官员秦桧官邸的神秘谋杀案展开,秦桧在那里会见了敌人的代表—统治金朝(1115-1234)的女真人--因为勾结。先行词residence在非限制性定语从句中作地点状语,用关系副词where引导从句。故填where。

    Dear fellow students,
With many of us students engaged in our studies, some stay up late into night and ignore physical exercise. Therefore, I am appealing to us students to live an active and healthy life.
For one thing, it’s of vital importance to sleep as early as possible, which can make you energetic the whole day. Staying up late frequently makes it hard for you to focus on your class. For another, we are supposed to attach great importance to workout, which not only helps build up our body but also help us better adapt to the burden of study.
Given all the above benefits, all of you are highly recommended to plan your study time properly and taking exercise regularly.

    Paragraph 1:
The first idea that hit Lora was to attract the cougar’s attention away from her kids. Lora rushed herself toward it, blindly seizing it by the neck. “Come stay behind me!” She shouted to the kids. On hearing it, the three children ran to Lora screaming. Just as she was about to shake the beast from side to side when it turned around abruptly, hurting her ear with its paw. Lora didn’t have time to care about it. Still grasping the cat’s back legs, she turned to Mikey, “Run back home! Run!” Mikey quickly bent down to hold Lisa in his arms and shouted to Paul, “Run.”The three kids looked back again and again as they were rushing backward.
    Paragraph 2:
Just as Lora was struggling with the beast with almost her last strength, she saw the three kids running back, each holding a stick. They came back to help their mother. The three kids screamed and swung their sticks at the cougar. It was probably their aggressive movements and harsh scream that scared the big cat. The cougar leapt onto the tree and ran away. Lora hugged her brave kids tightly. It was the greatest challenge Lora and her kids had met in their lives. Her friends and neighbors applauded their strength. And Lora knew that they could overcome any difficulty from that day on.
