It was a beautiful Saturday morning, a perfect morning for playing or swimming. However, Tom had to finish the work Aunt Polly gave him. As Tom started to paint Aunt Polly’s very long fence, along came Ben Rogers with a juicy apple in his hand.
Tom was silent. He focused on his painting like an artist.
“Looks like a lot of work, Tom.”
Tom turned suddenly. “Oh, it’s you, Ben! I didn’t notice.”
“I’m going swimming. Don’t you wish you could come instead of doing work?”
“What do you call work?” asked Tom.
    “Isn’t that work?”
Tom kept painting and answered careless, “Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know is it isn’t work for me.”
“Oh, come on. You can’t mean you like it?”
Tom continued painting. “Like it? Well, I don’t see why not. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence every day?”
That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom swept his brush carefully back and forth, added a touch of paint here and there, and stopped to take a look at it all. Ben watched every move and became more and more interested until he finally said, “Tom, why don’t you let me paint a little?”
Tom considered Ben’s offer. “Well, no, I can’t let you, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly takes pride in this fence. I think there isn’t one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it’s got to be done.”
“Oh, come on. Let me try. I’d let you, if I were painting, Tom!”
“Ben, I’d like to, honestly, but Aunt Polly, well ...”
“I’ll be careful. Just let me try. I’ll give you some of my apple.”
“Well, no, Ben. I’m afraid ...”
“I’ll give you all of it!”

“Watson,” said Mr. Smith, “this past year your department hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’m sorry, ______________.’’ “But, sir — if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.”
“What’s that!” said the boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.”
“I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star athlete and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ there.”
The boss sat seriously still for a long time — a faraway (恍惚的) look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said, “We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours — maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.”
Watson got out, with surprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School — written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read:
I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you're a cripple (跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ (冠军) and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, I am so grateful to him, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. Something big — that he won’t even know about.

During the last few years of his life, my dad lived just up the road from me in a tiny house. He had been alone for over 20 years after losing my mom. His own mother had recently passed away too. He was disabled and retired(退休), so he spent a lot of time alone.
Several times a week, though, I would take a walk up to his house. We would sit in the living room, drink tea and talk. It wasn’t anything big. We talked about sports, cars, gardening, weather, and enjoyed a laugh over old memories. It wasn’t anything too deep. It was just a simple sharing, a connection(联系) between a father and a son, an hour that was spent just enjoying each other’s company(陪伴). It allowed us to silently give each other time and love. It allowed us to grow closer together before he left this world.
I know that when my own time in this world is done, I will get to spend another afternoon with my dad. We will sit, talk, catch up, and quietly enjoy each other’s company. We will share all the love we didn’t get to share. And we will remember that afternoon forever.
If there is one thing that I learned from those afternoons, it is this: It is never too late to spend time with those you love. It is never too late to tell them that you love them. It is never too late to heal a relationship(关系) and mend a hurting heart. Begin today! Spend an afternoon with those you love and those afternoons will become a lifetime.

Once there was a forest where all the animals lived happily together. One day a family went to spend the day in the forest, and the son left his socks there. After the family left, a bear came by, and decided to try them on. They fit so well, and he liked them so much that he wouldn’t take them off.
All the animals talked about the bear’s new look. Soon, in the forest, there began appearing squirrels(松鼠), rabbits in shoes, and even rats(鼠), telling animals, “This can’t be good. Animals don’t need clothes!” But no one listened to him. They said he was just out of fashion.
However, it wasn’t long before the first results of fashion — fever came. Several times the squirrel caught his shirt on trees, stopping him in mid — jump and sending him falling to the ground from a tree. The rat couldn’t go into his hole without taking off his hat first. On February 20, 2021, Jasmine Harrison became the youngest woman to row (划艇)alone across the Atlantic Ocean. It took the 21-year-old swimming teacher just over 70 days to do it.
Ms. Harrison, who’s from England, didn’t have much experience in rowing long distances (A). She got the idea three years ago when she happened to be in Antigua. There she saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. “I want to do this, so I’m going to do it.” she said.
Every year, rowers taking part in the Atlantic Compaign set out from the Canary Islands in December and row about 4,800 kilometers across the Atlantic. Some row in teams of two, three or four. Others, like Ms. Harrison, row by themselves.
It wasn’t easy. Every day, Ms. Harrison would row for about 12 hours. She rowed about 20, 000 strokes (划) a day.
Ms. Harrison had a smartphone that allowed her to talk with family and friends every day. She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including some whales. For several days, she was followed by a small group of dolphins(海豚) “I was in their environment.” she said. “It was just amazing.”

Spending almost a full day in the car with a 70-year-old woman could be boring. However, for a 15-year-old girl, it was a great memory for many reasons. During the trip, we discussed anything we had wondered about in life. And I learned a lot I had never expected to.
I learned that we shouldn’t take ourselves seriously and that not everyone has to get “old and boring”. She is probably one of the coolest, funniest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. In boring moments (时刻), she never fails to tell one of her famous jokes. But when you need a shoulder to cry on, she is there to comfort you. She taught me that “Laughter is the best medicine”.
She never brings her phone, and she is okay with it. That hasn’t stopped her from shopping and talking with her family online. She doesn’t take pictures of everything she sees.
From now on, I plan on accepting the fact that I don’t need to stay connected with social media (社交媒体) all the time. Even though I don’t use a mobile phone, I can also be better at communicating with people.
There are so many things you can learn from someone older and wiser than you. You don’t need to ask for advice, just slow down and enjoy the conversation. You’ll be surprised at how amazing it is.

I used to be a pessimist(悲观主义者), thinking that the worst thing might happen in every situation.
Last year, my mother had a serious illness. I felt my whole world turn upside down and I had no idea what I could do to help her with her pain. I often cried whenever I was alone.
Last month, I lost an expensive dress that was a birthday present from my father. I could not fall asleep for a few nights because I felt so terrible about the loss.
There have been many things like these in my life. I really didn’t know how to deal with them until I read If You Have a Lemon, Make a Lemonade by an American writer, Dale Carnegie.
“When the wise man is handed a lemon, he asks: ‘How can I turn this lemon into a lemonade? How can I improve my situation? What lesson can I learn from this?’” he wrote.
I suddenly realized that life is full of ups and downs, so I decided to stay positive(积极的) all the time.
Now when I think of my past, I wish I could have dealt with things differently. When my mother was fighting with her illness, I should have held her hands in mine, telling her that things would get better instead of hiding and crying.
Recently, I took part in a school singing competition. I didn’t win a prize. If I had not read the article, I would be sad and disappointed again. But I smiled after the competition because at least, I had got some experience in the singing competition.
Life is not just a bed of roses. There are thorns(刺) as well, but these thorns help us become braver and better. When life offers us a lemon, let’s try to make a lemonade.

It doesn’t have the best things, and it doesn’t have the worst, so is with the service. The clothes aren’t the most fashionable, but they are more fashionable than the ones at many other stores. And its location is convenient, too.

    H(2021·安徽砀山·三模)
Sue Coppard grew up in the countryside. As a child, her dream was going to the outside world. In fact, she achieved her dream. In 1971, Sue Coppard worked as a secretary in London. While Sue enjoyed city life, she also missed the country where she spent most of her time as a child. So she offered to help out on an organic(有机的)farming program organized by a nearby college.
Sue put a small ad(广告)in the magazine, offering people the chance to volunteer(做志愿者)at the organic farm. The volunteer program grew quickly. Soon other organic farmers joined in it, asking people to help out. With many volunteers and farmers joining in it, Sue started World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms(世界有机农场机会组织)to help them find one another.
In order to make more volunteers interested in it, Sue made WWOOF not only a weekend activity, but also an activity for travelers and people who wish to live and work on farms for longer periods of time.
By working on farms, the volunteers communicate with farmers and develop a love for the outdoors and organic farming.
Volunteering is something that anyone can do. So next time when you want to be busy on vacation, why not look for a good cause to spend your time on?
