In recent years, with the development of technology, many popular apps (应用程序) have been produced. These days, an app has caught great attention. It is Douyin, a video sharing app. Douyin first appeared in 2016. Now it is many people’s favorite app, especially the young.

Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk?
First, you had to learn how to balance(平衡) yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power—you’d stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time-you did it!
Now, the next step—walking. You’d seen others do it. It didn’t look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong—more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people found you walking, they cheered, “Oh, look at what the kid is doing. ” This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child—how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering? You couldn’t wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

What’s the most popular school for American students? The answer is the school dance. Most American high schools have at least two dances during the year, one in winter and the other in spring. Students take part in these dances because it’s a great chance for them to meet new friends and to be sociable(好交际的). At the school dance, students are from all grades and classes.
Can all students attend the school dance? The answer is “No”. At the school dance, there will be strict rules to help create a healthy and enjoyable evening for the students. Most schools only accept dancers under 21 years old. In order to create a safe environment, all the dancers will be given a check before they come into the dance area. This is acceptable(可接受的). But some rules may be a little bit over the top. For example, a school once asked its students to keep a standing position while they were dancing. As a “result”, the students didn’t have the chance of showing their cool dancing skills. However, you’d better not break the rules, or you’ll be asked to leave the dance floor, or even worse, but put on a “do not invite” list.

The Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League(联盟) in America every year. The champion of the National Football Conference(NFC)competes against the champion of the American Football Conference(AFC)(体系)to decide which is the best team in the country. Super Bowl is far more than a sporting event. The mix of America’s biggest institutions (体系):sports, TV, advertising and entertainment makes the Super Bowl an American cultural phenomenon.
The Super Bowl is usually held on the last Sunday of January or the first Sunday of February. That day is called Super Bowl Sunday. For years, it has been the most watched one-day sporting event in the US and it gradually has become an unofficial national holiday. Guests may arrive dressed in their team’s T-shirt and carrying beer to share.
Knowing that the Super Bowl has the attention of millions of Americans, companies pay big money for game-time advertising. In 2019, the advertising cost set a record-$5. 3 million for 30 seconds. The Super Bowl has developed to a TV selling season sandwiched between after﹣Christmas sales and Valentine’s Day.
Another tradition of the Super Bowl is the Halftime Show, which presents at the half time break between the second and third quarters. The Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical event of the year. So it is also called the Americans’ Spring Festival Gala. Non﹣football fans tune (调台) in to the Super Bowl for the most famous musicians’ performances during halftime. As the top performers, Travis Scott and Big Boy gave impressive live show for the audience in the Super Bowl Halftime Show 2019. The show represents a link between American football and pop culture and helps broaden the television audience and nationwide interest.

What does taking the train mean to you? Perhaps it’s just a way of getting to your destination(目的地). In fact, the train itself can be part of the fun.
On March 28th, China’s first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu in Sichuan for Zunyi in Guizhou. It soon became the talk of China with its special design and comfortable service.
It’s inside and outside are decorated with giant panda pictures. Attendants(乘务员) carry panda toys and passengers can try panda-shaped food and Sichuan snacks. Some people call it a mobile star hotel because it has a bar, karaoke room, dance hall, and mahjong(麻将) room.
This luxury(高档的) service is one aspect that has attracted travelers. But train travel interests people for other reasons.
In the fast-paced times we live in, train travel is a good way to slow down. It gives you time and space to read, sleep, chat with friends, or simply do nothing but watch the changing scenery outside.
One surprising thing is that you might meet new people. Sheng Yawei, 26, once took the longest railway in the world—the Trans-Siberian Railway in the world. Sheng met a Russian student and they became friends. “I also met a cute boy who gave me melon seeds(瓜子). Though we didn’t understand each other’s language, it made me feel nice.”

As an exchange student, I studied in France for two years. The first time I took a class in the chemistry lab, I was surprised to find that students were fully “armed”. Everyone was wearing goggles (护目镜) and gloves. Safety comes first for science lab class.
My chemistry teacher Mrs. Louise usually gave us the instruction paper the night before the lab class and let us read it. During the class, she first went over the steps and then put us into groups of two to do the experiments (实验). What was special was that for every lab class, Mrs. Louise changed everyone’s lab partner to make them work with different classmates.
The class was often filled with laughter and screams (尖叫). We once tried to burn the chemicals and watch the colors of the flames (火焰). Different chemicals produced different colors of flames, including bright orange and dark green. Many students in my class were surprised. “Wow! That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures, posted them online and sent them to their friends. Mrs. Louise didn’t get angry with us at all for our “noises”. She herself even took photos with us!
After finishing an experiment, we had to write a lab report. If we had a big mistake in the experiment, we needed to analyze (分析) why it happened and what we should do to avoid it next time. The lab reports were very important. They made up around 25% of our term grade.

Eyes always on us
Video cameras are everywhere: schools, theatres and stores. But in recent years, they have entered our homes. Many parents set up cameras at home to watch their children’s online classes and homework. Are cameras really helpful? What do students think about it?

Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and videos instead of studying. This watch affected my studies and made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me.

Luckily, Ian Stevenson and his friends saw the baby hippo. They took him back, fed him milk and eggs. The young animal was saved and soon doubled his weight. He seemed happy and healthy.
Later, the hippo, now called Douglas, was moved to an ideal home at Chipembele, a wildlife center owned by Ann and Steve Tolan. They built a sleeping place for Douglas by a pool where he liked to swim. They fed him every three hours. Douglas enjoyed playing with the Tolans’ pet dogs and swimming in the pool. Sometimes at night, other hippos came from the nearby river to eat grass. Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people (“Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.”) However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions, When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you-will you make any next year?

When I was a litter girl, I was the center of attention. I had control of the soccer field and played football with the boys. I shared my thoughts in class discussions, never fearing I was wrong. I led my life happily. Judgment(评价)from others didn’t trouble me.
But finally, my family left for a new place. And I had to attend a new school. I felt as if I had lost my value; after all, what is a ruler without her lands? Now, it’s a completely new life for me.
Over time, I started to care about what others thought of me. I stopped playing football and racing others. I never raised my hand in class or discussed with my classmates... The worry was: what if I was not perfect?
A few months later, when I arrived home with tears(泪水)in my eyes, I saw a letter on my door. In the letter, I was described as a role model. I learned that someone who had clearly seen my pain and worry tried to comfort(安慰)me, I gave up my joy to create a perfect person.
The letter changed me a lot. I tried to be myself-not to pay much attention to being perfect again.

In summer, it’s common on the street to see many Chinese women holding umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun. But when Amy, an exchange student in Beijing from the US, first saw this, she found it strange, even impossible to understand. She wrote on her blog(博客), “Unlike Chinese women, American women prefer to put on their tank tops (背心) and sunglasses during summer.”
This may be caused by the different standards of beauty between the US and China. Many Americans don’t want white skin. They would rather be tanned (晒黑). Amy also wrote, “Having darker skin is so popular that many women and men will pay for fake tans (假晒黑) so that they can keep their sun-kissed appearance during the winter months, too.”
Why do they like tanned skin? Michelle Louis reported in her research, “The process of tanning can help make people’s skin smooth and hide marks.” She further explained, “Tans make people’s skin appear healthier and make them appear thinner than when they have pale skin.”
Perhaps there is no real ideal standard of beauty. In different cultures and at different times of history, the standards change. On Amy’s blog, she also gave two examples: Some women carried umbrellas around trying to keep their white skin in the US 150 years ago; During the Tang Dynasty in China, heavy women were thought beautiful. But now, Chinese women prefer to be thin.
In a word, different standards of beauty should be respected. People may grow up with only one idea of what beauty is, but it doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the correct or the best idea.

Michael Morpurgo was born on 5th October, 1943 in the south of England. He and his brother were moved from London when the Second World War began. Michael went to two different boarding schools when he was growing up. He particularly enjoyed playing rugby and singing but he often felt homesick and missed home. After school, Michael joined the army but he did not enjoy being shouted at and so he left shortly afterwards. Michael then decided to go to university instead.
After graduating from university, Michael became a primary school teacher and taught in a small school in Kent. He loved teaching and his favourite thing to do was to read stories to his class. When he ran out of stories to read to them, Morpurgo started to write his own. His first book was written in 1974 and was called It Never Rains: Five Stories. Morpurgo has stated that the days he spent teaching are some of the happiest of his life.
Michael left teaching after ten years and bought a farm with his wife. Together they began a charity called Farms for City Children. This charity offers children who live in poorer, inner-cities the chance to come and stay on a working farm for a week. Children learn from hands-on experience about how to care for animals and how to work with others as part of a team. The charity is still running today, and thousands of children have been to stay at one of the three farms that the charity now owns.
Michael Morpurgo has written over 100 books for children. He writes about children and their relationships with older people and animals. He also writes stories about wars. The moon is made up of rock and dust. The moon has no air, no water and no life. The surface of the moon has depressions(洼地)called craters(环形山). The moon is the earth’s nearest neighbor. It is only about 238,900 miles (384,000 km) away from the moon to the earth.
We can see the bright moon at night. Many people think that the moon gives out light by itself. In fact, they are wrong. The truth is that the moon does not make its own light. It reflects(反射)the sun’s light.
The moon goes around the earth. It takes about one month for the moon to go all the way around the earth one time.

Tea-bag drinking is most Westerners’ favorite way of drinking tea. Do you know how it came about?
The tea bag was invented in 1908 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk bags for people to try, which made it taste better. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. And after drinking, they just needed to throw the tea bag. So, they were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.
Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze(薄纱)and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag. Tea bags were soon a hit in the UK, and today 85 % of tea in the UK is packed in paper bags.
However, some people still prefer loose leaf tea. This is because some tea companies put not very good tea in their tea bags. But for most drinkers, tea bags are still their best choice.

A woman was at the airport waiting for her flight to start boarding. She still had a lot of time, so she went to a shop and bought a book to read. While she was in the shop, she decided to buy a bag of cookies as well.
She arrived at her gate, sat down and started reading her book. She read her book so carefully that she didn’t notice what was going on around her. But she did see that a man had sat down next to her and taken one of her cookies out of the bag.
She pretended not to notice, as she didn’t want to make a scene (当众大吵). But then the man took more. He kept eating the cookies until there was just one left. The man took the last cookie and broke it in half. He tapped the woman on the shoulder and held out one half to her.
The woman could not believe how much nerve (勇气) this man had to steal all of her cookies and then offer half a cookie in return. She angrily grabbed (夺) the half—cookie out of his hand and ate it without any words.
Finally, it was time for her to board. As she went to the gate, she reached into her purse. Suddenly, she realized that her bag of cookies was still in her purse. The man had eaten his own cookies the whole time and simply wanted to share the last one with her. The woman’s face turned red with shame. So she quickly caught up with him and said, “Please forgive me and thank you for your cookie.”
When we’re not paying attention to the world around us, it can be easy to misunderstand what’s happening or even become angry with others. It is better to keep our eyes open and think about every possibility when trying to understand a special situation.

29.What did the man do with the last cookie?

One day in ancient Greece, King Hiero asked a crown(皇冠)maker to make him a golden crown. When he first saw the crown, he was happy with it. It’s a nice crown, isn’t it?” he asked his men. But later, he began to doubt whether it was a real golden crown. The king sent the crown to Archimedes, a great scientist, because he wanted Archimedes to discover the truth.
“This problem seems difficult to solve. What should I do?” thought Archimedes. He was still thinking about it as he filled his bath(浴缸)with water. When he got into the bath, some water spilt (溢出)。 “ That’s it! ” shouted Archimedes. “I know how to solve the king’s problem!”
Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. In the palace, he told the king he had an idea. First, he weighed the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight as the crown. Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled both pots with water. Then, he put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Finally, he put the crown into the other pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl. “Look at this, ”Archimedes said to the king. “The gold of the same weight as the crown made less water run into the bowl, but this crown made more water run into the bowl.
