Every living thing needs to reproduce. Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds (种子) to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity. Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread this way.
Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place.
Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
    30. What does the word “gravity” mean in the second paragraph?

Scientists say they’ve developed a new system(系统). It can use “machine learning” to predict when and where lightning(闪电) will strike(闪击). The research was led by engineers from Switzerland.
European researchers have estimated(估算) between 6, 000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power cuts, destroy houses and start forest fires. For these reasons, some climate scientists have studied to develop methods to predict and control lightning. But no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.
The new system is being tested in the experiments(实验). It used a combination of data(数据资料) from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model. It was trained to tell weather conditions that were possible to cause lightning.
The model was created with some data. The data was collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to(与……有关) four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity(相对湿度) and wind speed.
The atmospheric(大气的) data was put into a machine learning algorithm(计算程序), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student who led the development of the new system. He said, “Common systems for collecting such data are slow and complex, and they require expensive collection equipment(设备) like radar or satellites (卫星).”
“Our system uses data that can be gotten from any weather station,” Mostajabi said. “This will improve data collection in the areas which are not covered by radar and satellites or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.
    34. According to the passage, the strikes can’t cause ________.
    A. power cuts B. earthquakes
    C. forest fires D. the death of people
    35. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 5?
    A. The lightning strike. B. The system being tested.
    C. The machine learning algorithm. D. The atmospheric data.
    36. What do the last two paragraphs mainly tell us?
    A. Where weather stations should be built.
    B. How the machine learning algorithm works.
    C. The advantages of the new system in data collection.
    D. The new system has effectively predicted lightning in faraway areas.
    37. Which of the following statements about the new system is TRUE?
    A. Its prediction model has been tested for 12 years.
    B. It has been put into use in cities and mountain areas widely.
    C. The new system requires expensive collection equipment to collect data.
    D. It uses machine learning to predict the time and places of lightning strikes.

For thousands of years, humans have explored the Earth. Nowadays, we are exploring space. Astronomers (天文学家) are modern—day explorers. Now, many astronomers are looking for new planets and new places of humans to live in the future. But where do astronomers start looking?
First of all, astronomers look for a star. That’s because our own Earth moves around a star (the Sun). More importantly, it is the correct distance (距离) from the Sun for heat and light. So when astronomers have found the star, they look at the planets around it. In recent years, astronomers have found nearly 400 new planets with stars. However, many of these planets are either too near to the star or too far away.
However, if the planet is in a good position, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock. Water is important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and they can also grow plants with water. And plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. Rock on a planet is also important. That’s because there is often water under the rock.
After many years of scrutinizing, astronomers have found a planet that is similar to the Earth. It’s Gliese 581g and it’s near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the average (平均的) temperature is between -31℃ and -12℃. That’s cold, but not colder than Antarctica or Arctic Circle, for example, Gliese 581g is bigger than the Earth. A year on Gliese 581g is only 37 Earth days instead of 365. But astronomers do not think there are big differences and some them thing Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. However, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from the Earth.
30.What do astronomers have to find first before starting to look for a new place for humans to live?
A.A new star. B.A new planet. C.Some heat. D.Some light.
31.What does the rock on a planet tell us?
A.The star is a right position. B.We may discover water under it.
C.The planet is too near to the Sun. D.There can be air around the rock.
32.What does the underlined word “scrutinizing” mean in the last paragraph?
    A.discussing B.waiting C.looking D.traveling
33.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Gliese 581g is already a new Earth. B.There are planets similar to our Earth.
C.Water, air and rock are important. D.Astronomers are looking for a new Earth.

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Musicians hear better, says study leader Nina Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. For example, when the violinists play in an orchestra(管弦乐队), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore(忽视)the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gotfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风)patients.
Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally However, they can till sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.
So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.
34.What were the people in the first group asked to do in the study of Northwestern University?
A.Listen to different kinds of music. B.Make some noise in an empty room.
C.Give the second group musical training. D.Find out what the talking person was saying.
35.The writer uses the example of violinists in Paragraph 3 to explain________.
A.how musicians play in an orchestra B.how musicians ignore certain sounds
C.why musicians have better hearing ability D.why musicians are not afraid of loud noise
36.Gottfried Schlaug helps his stroke patients speak by________.
A.playing music for them B.getting them to sing words
C.teaching them to play instruments D.joining the bad parts of their brain
37.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce different ways of playing music.
B.To give some advice about making our brain active.
C.To show the relationship between music and language abilities.
D.To share the results of recent studies on treating stroke patients.

    A
Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards-but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe, people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries, a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America, people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA, you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China, you can leave a bit of food on your plate, it’s OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, which you mustn’t do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
When you’re travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home.

Have you tried to run or walk for exercise and then given up? If you answered yes, you should try a new kind of exercise: aquatic (水中的) exercise. Aquatic exercise is like exercise on land, but you do it in a swimming pool. More and more people are trying aquatic exercise.
Aquatic exercise feels easier than exercising on land. Why? You weigh about 90% less in the pool. It is better for your knees than running or walking. Water is about 1 000 times thicker and heavier than air. To move through the water, your body has to work four times as hard. As a result, you can burn more calories (卡路里).
In fact, most people say they feel more relaxed in the water. They stop thinking about the things that make them worried. They feel in control of their bodies. The cool, quiet environment makes them feel good.
But what if you are afraid of the water? No problem! There is nothing to worry about. Aquatic exercise is safe and easy to learn. It doesn't require any special skills. You don't even need to know how to swim. Aquatic exercise is for everyone.
    34. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A. Difference between air and water. B. Weight change of one's body.
    C. The advantages of aquatic exercise. D. The ways to do aquatic exercise.

    A. Relaxing. B. Worrying. C. Challenging. D. Boring.

    【27题详解】
    主旨大意题。通读第二段可知讲述了身体语言③ Body language;第三段是面对面交谈④ Face-to-face communication;第四段是在外面吃① Eating out;第五段是在家的时候② In the home。
