Celeste Ng, a new writer, has gained recognition for her first novel, Everything I Never Told You. Ng's parents came from Hong Kong, China in the 1960s. Ng was born in America and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights, Ohio, in a family of scientists. Celeste went to Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award.

Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The main character is Lydia, a teenage girl, who is the favourite of three children born to a white mother and a Chinese-American father. The story is about Lydia's disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and exposed secrets as they search for Lydia.

Though the characters in this story are Asian, Ng says she didn't really want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story was about real people in her life. Because she grew up in America and doesn't speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian characters in the book.

The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the Editor's Pick for No.1 Best Book of the Year in 2014. Ng is still getting used to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have read her book. With so many readers, it's safe to say this is a book you should read. But if you're looking for a simple mystery, this book might not be for you. Most readers warn that you should not read this book unless you're prepared to cry.

    26. How do most readers probably find the book?

    C

If you were asked to imagine a scientist, what image would come to your mind? The common idea that most kids from kindergarten through college have of a scientist is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and several glass cups of mysterious colourful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority view scientists as strange people who spend 100 hours a week slaving away in a lonely laboratory. However, the reality is quite different.

Recently I've had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my laboratory and into Costa Rica. It supports a huge amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species, which are at present nearly 4% of the total species worldwide!

First we worked alongside conservationists to preserve wildlife at a leatherback turtle(棱皮龟)rescue centre. We helped the volunteers preserve the turtle population by removing rubbish from the shoreline to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic activity relating to earthquakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rainforest. After reaching the top, we went down and through waterfalls to the beautiful valley below! On the last day we got a hands-on introduction to rocket science where we learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station.

During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesn't mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist is one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping preserve wildlife, learning about earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that schools should really stress that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring!

    28. According to the first paragraph, scientists are often believed

    A. to work as slaves      B. to spend too much time in labs

    C. to behave in a strange way    D. to do experiments in messy labs

    29. How did the author help to preserve the turtle population?

    A. By creating a safe nest for turtles.

    B. By collecting the turtle eggs on the beach.

    C. By picking up rubbish from the shoreline.

    D. By finding a comfortable environment for turtles.

    30. What does the author learn about science from his experience?

    A. Science is full of boring experiments.

    B. Science is more than working in a lab.

    C. Science is related to mysterious liquids.

    D. Science is about wildlife and earthquakes.

    31. What might be the best title of this passage?

    A. What a Scientist Is Like

    B. My wonderful experience in Costa Rica

    C. the Adventures and Excitement Science Can Bring

    D. the Secrets behind Science Phenomena(现象).

    D

Mount Qomolangma, meaning "Holy Mother" in Tibetan, is the world's highest mountain above sea level. No wonder most people consider climbing to its top as one of their biggest achievements. More than 4,000 climbers, ranging from 13 to 80 years old, have managed to reach the top. Three people from the Sherpa community hold the current record at 21 times each!

You may be surprised at these numbers but that's just the start of it. Last year, cleanup crews collected as much as 8.4 tons of garbage from Mount Qomolangma's North Base Camp in Tibet at 5,150 meters. And in the regions below that level, more than 335 tons of waste was collected. What a sad fact it is that the highest mountain in the world is turning into the highest mountain of trash!

To reverse the trend, the Chinese government recently announced that it had closed the North Base Camp to tourists. From now on, ordinary tourists will only be able to travel as far as Rongbuk Monastery, about 5,000 meters above sea level. No more than 300 climbers with special permits will be allowed to climb Qomolangma each year. They are supposed to follow stricter rules, including carrying all their waste out with them and only climbing in spring.

Despite these tough measures, it is clear that tourism has caused enormous damage to the natural environment. Mount Qomolangma is not alone. Some popular parks around the world are also struggling to preserve their environments and keep up with increased tourism. Yellowstone National Park in the U. S. has long been troubled by the overflowing trash piles. Joshua Tree National Park suffered a wave of vandalism (破坏), with graffiti sprayed on rocks and ancient trees destroyed. In order to protect the environment, the National Park Service had no choice but to close the park temporarily.

As we can see, the natural environment can be destroyed by human activities in less than five minutes, but it might take hundreds of years to recover. Now it's time for ordinary tourists to leave "Holy Mother" alone and wait for her to restore her beauty.

    32. Why are the figures listed about Qomolangma in Paragraph 2?

    A. To describe it is extremely vast and high.
    B. To show it is difficult to collect trash there.
    C. To indicate it is a popular tourist attraction.
    D. To illustrate it is suffering serious pollution.

    33. What does the underlined word "reverse" mean in Paragraph 3?

    A. Fit with. B. Follow up.   C. Turn around.      D. Speed up.

    34. What is the author likely to support to protect Qomolangma?

    A. Developing its tourism. B. Forbidding any entry in spring.

    C. Reducing human activities. D. Building more base camps.

    35. Which section of a newspaper might this article come from?

    A. Society. B. Environment.   C. Tourism.     D. Education.

WeChat(微信)is becoming increasing popular with people. Recently I have made a survey among my classmate about the use of WeChat. According to a result, 45% of the classmates admit they often use it because comparing with other means of communication, WeChat has more advantages. It was cheap, convenient and easy to send all kinds of messages around. Besides, 35% of whom are against using it, saying it will affect their study. Not using WeChat, the rest has no opinion about it. As far as I'm concerned, since WeChat offers us great convenience, it should be made good use. We should not be slaves to it or let it to govern our minds and behaviour.
