The job description of a postman doesn't always include travelling through thick forests, fast-flowing waters and occasionally being run after by wild animals, but for D. Sivan, that is exactly what it is.
Every day for 30 years, this humble postman has been delivering post to some of the most remote villages in Coonoor which are inaccessible by road. Carrying the mail, he walks along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway track, walking through thick forests, crossing slippery streams and walking on railway bridges. Having travelled through the difficult path for 30 years, Mr. Sivan has grown fond of the wild animals he encounters on his daily walks, going so far as to say that they've all become his friends. But even his friends have occasionally caused him some trouble, with an elephant once having run after him. He was saved by a truck driver who spotted him and honked at the elephant. The animals recognize him now, though.
As the years rolled by, emails started replacing letter writing. And as more and more people moved from the Nilgiri hills to the plains-the towns of Mettupalayam and Coimbatore, Sivan's bag became lighter and lighter every day. Many weeks he ended up carrying just 3-4 letter to each village.
One day Sivan noticed that a man to whom he was supposed to deliver his pension had moved to Coimbatore. The man had fallen very sick and was hospitalized. Sivan tracked down the hospital, travelled 80 kms by bus and later car, and delivered the pension. The kind postman even paid for the whole trip himself!
Not all heroes wear a cape(披风);some have white hair and carry a simple bag full of letters. Not all heroes write cool stories on Instagram; some just sit outside a door and read out a son's letter to his mother.
    24. Which of the following best describes Sivan's daily delivery journey?
    A. Awkward.
    B. Comfortable.
    C. Adventurous.
    D. Uneventful.

The Legacy Senior Communities is proud to announce the latest innovation in senior living care is coming to its Dallas and Plano campuses, the TrueLoo® smart toilet by Toi Labs. “We're consistently exploring new technologies to ensure that we are providing excellent care in the most effective and efficient ways, " says Legacy Senior Communities CEO Melissa Orth.
"The TrueLoo® smart toilet provides early detection of oncoming health complications before they become serious, and all in a dignnified and valuable manner. This improves our care response and can potentially avoid a potential health complication altogether, ” says Orth. “The innovative toilet automates data collection and enables clinical team members to keep track of the residents around the clock without uncomfortable conversations with them about their toileting habits. Investing in TrueLoo® technology enables a higher standard of care with dignity, "says Vik Kashyap, Toi Labs' founder and CEO.

The pilot program will launch in Memory Support at the Kalman and Ida Wolens Foundation Healthcare Center at the Willow Bend community and at the Midtown Park community's Andrea &Richard Skibell and Leslie Rudd Healthcare Center. The communities will continue manual monitoring to establish a control group during this trial period. The resulting data will enable The Legacy to benchmark the ability of the smart toilet.
“We decided to trial the smart toilet in two different service areas, " said Director of Strategic Development Bridgette Walshe. “We want to ensure that this technology is non- invasive (非侵入性的)while providing accurate and relevant data. "Walshe believes that artificial intelligence is one potential means to cost-effectively improve senior care services, freeing up valuable time for clinical team members to provide more person-centric care.
    32. How can the TrueLoo® smart toilet benefit seniors?
    A. By improving their toileting habits.
    B. By identifying their potential health issues.
    C. By calling clinical team members for them at any time.

Three Ways to Slow Down Myopia
Myopia, which is also known as short-sightedness or nearsightedness, is a growing problem. In fact, a recent study predicts that myopia will affect vision for nearly half of the global population by 2050. Myopia usually begins in childhood and tends to get worse as people get older. This can have a negative impact on one's everyday life. 36 Here's how.
First, put the devices away. Data from 145 studies covering 2. 1 million participants revealed that increases in myopia are driven principally by lifestyle. Today's youth spend a lot of time performing near work activities, often on electronic devices. Of course, it's unrealistic not to use these devices at all. 37
Next, go outside. Increased outdoor activity has been shown to slow the onset of myopia by 11%-34%. One possible reason is that components of sunlight activate vitamin D, which may play a potential role in eye growth. 38 This places fewer near-vision demands on young eyes.
39 Regular glasses and contact lenses (隐形眼镜)can help people see more clearly, but they do not slow down the progression of myopia. However, certain types of contact lenses including soft lenses can slow down the speed at which myopia develops, providing a more effective and efficient treatment option. Just consult your doctor.
Controlling myopia is important because the dependency on glasses can reduce one's ability to participate actively in sports and other activities. 40 Therefore, take steps to keep your eyes healthy.
    A. Finally, try not to wear glasses.
    B. Finally, ask your doctor about ways to manage myopia.
    C. Myopia can be caused by family history, lifestyle or both.
    D. But try to limit them so that there's more balance in the day.
    E. And increasing myopia can sometimes lead to future eye health problems.
    F. Fortunately, new research is lighting the path to improved strategies to manage myopia.
    G. Also, people are usually engaged in more distance vision activities when they're outside.

Every early morning Gleen would run to school to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and classmates arrived. Their little schoolhouse was heated by an old- fashioned coal stove in winter.
One chilly morning, the teacher and students arrived, only to find the schoolhouse in flames. Gleen was dragged out of the flaming building, unconscious. The lower half of his body was badly burned and he was immediately sent to a nearby hospital. From his bed, Gleen faintly heard the doctor talking to his parents. “He could hardly survive, ” the doctor said in a low voice, “for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. ”
“I don't want to die, mum. ” Gleen told his mother. He was determined to survive. To the doctor's amazement, he did survive. When the serious danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his parents speaking quietly. “He was bound to be disabled for life, ” the doctor whispered, “since the fire had destroyed so much flesh a in the lower part of his body. He can't walk like a normal person. ”
“I will walk, dad. ” Gleen told his father. Once more, the brave boy made up his mind. He would not be disabled. But unfortunately, he has no feeling from the waist down. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Ultimately, he was discharged from the hospital.
Back home, Gleen's mother would squeeze and rub his little legs every day, hoping to help them recover, but it made little difference. He was either in bed or attached to a wheelchair. Yet his determination that he would walk never faded. Instead, he kept thinking about how to make himself stand up and walk again.
On a lovely summer day, as usual, Gleen was wheeled out into the yard for some fresh air, where his father had just built a fence by driving the stakes (木桩)into the grassland. Sitting in the wheelchair, Gleen was staring at the fence around the yard.

W: It sure is cold this morning, isn't it? I barely even get out of bed!
    M:Yeah. It's pretty cold, alright.
W:Did you catch the news this morning? It's reported that there was a fire on Byron Street. M:No, I didn't read newspaper.
W:Did you happen to watch the football game last night? The Patriots scored in the last minute! M:No, I don't like football.
W:Oh. . . By the way, I saw you with your daughter at the office Christmas party. She is really beautiful.
M:She is my wife! Ohh, here's my floor! Nice talking to you. Goodbye.
W: Sir, this is the 56th floor! We are on the 70th!
    M: That's okay. I'll take the stairs!
    Text 8
W: Robert, are you taking driving lessons at Russell's Driving school?
M:I'm learning to drive, but the school is actually called Rupert's Driving school.
    W:Is it expensive?
M: Well, it is fourteen dollars for each lesson.
W:I see. And are their cars new?
M: Yes, but they aren't big cars, so parking is easy.
W: Good. When are you going to take your driving test?
M: I've learned for one month. I took the test yesterday but I failed.
W: Oh, what a shame! Did you hit something or. . .
M: The traffic lights were red but I didn't see them and I couldn't stop in time.
W: Oh, well, you can take the test again.
M: Yeah, I'll take it again next week.
    Text 9
W: Excuse me. I'd like to apply for a credit card with you.
M: Sure. We've got standard card, gold card, and diamond card. May I ask what your monthly
salary is? Because it determines what kind of card you can apply for.
W: Oh, it used to be 8, 000, but it has doubled since last month.
M:Well, then, you can choose our gold card or diamond card.
    W:Hmm, what's the difference?
M:The gold card has a lower credit limit - that's 20, 000 yuan, whereas with the diamond card
you can have a credit limit of 50, 000 yuan.
W:OK. Are there any extra benefits of the diamond card?
M:Yes, you can get a discount if you use this card to make purchases at specified luxury
shops, health clubs, and fast food restaurants.
W:Great. My health club membership is about to be renewed.
M:Then, please fill out this application form.
W:Here you are. By the way, what deposit do I need?
M:No need. But, may I have your ID card? I need a copy of it.

Welcome, everyone. This is Allan from Doctors' Research. As we all know, your job not only affects your income, quality of life, and happiness, but it also affects your health. A new study has suggested that having an interesting job in your forties may reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease in old age. After examining over 100, 000 volunteers, the researchers found that people like government officers and lawyers are a third less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's disease than vehicle drivers and machine operators. Although lots of studies have suggested that keeping the brain active by challenging yourself regularly likely reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease, none of them has found that mentally demanding hobbies, like doing puzzles, have the same effect. Nor does reading. On the contrary, regular exercise and a healthy diet are recommended in helping lower the risk to some degree.

    第二节
It occurred to him that he could make the most of the fence. He had his mother wheeled him to the fence, beside which he threw himself onto the grass from the chair. Then, using all his strength, he struggled to raise himself up by holding on to the fence. Then, stake by stake, he began moving himself forward along the fence, dragging his legs behind. “Mom, dad, I will make it. ” Glenn smiled at his parents, his eyes full of determination. After that, Gleen began to do this every day until he made a flat path beside the fence. He kept practicing standing up and walking with the help of the fence while his mother kept squeezing and rubbing his legs every day. As time went by, with his mother's daily massages and his persistence, he did regain the ability to first stand up by himself, then to walk unsteadily, then to walk by himself, and finally to run. Gleen, the boy who was never expected to survive, walk or run, proved that nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
