The spending pwer f yung peple varies frm persn t persn. Each, hwever, is faced with the same questin: what t d with their mney? Recent headlines have seen mre and mre teens maxing ut their parents’ credit cards n games r ther nline activities.
Hwever peple intend t use their mney, the imprtance attached t managing it seems t be unparalleled t yunger generatins. In this case, Jerry Witkvsky and his methd f using fur jars t teach teenagers hw t spend their mney wisely caught the public’s attentin.
When Jerry’s grandchildren turned 13, his present t each f them was fur jars: ne fr Spending, ne fr Saving, ne fr Giving, and anther fr Investing. It was frm then n that his grandchildren started t be in cntrl f what t d with the mney they receive.
The value taught with the Spending jar is that yu are respnsible fr yur wn happiness. Mney gives yu independence and the pprtunity t buy smething yu like.
The Saving jar, giving yu a visin fr the future, culd invlve saving fr university but it culd als mean saving fr that special smething yu’ve seen in the stres.
The Investing jar nt nly represents a visin fr the future, but gives the pprtunity t build fr the future. Althugh this culd likewise invlve putting aside mney fr yur university educatin, it als means investing in yurself.
The Giving jar is all abut kindness and helping. Whether yu want t help ut a friend r give mney t children in anther cuntry, it’s up t yu.
The wider aim f the jars is t encurage teenagers t think mre bjectively abut mney and the things that it can d, s that they can grw up understanding the value f the valuable. In this way, they will be better equipped in their adult lives t make infrmed chices abut hw they use the mney they have. Indeed, the small change inside their jars culd mean a big change in hw they manage their mney.
Why did Jerry give his grandchildren jars as the birthday present?

It was in 2005 that Chris Jnes f the University f Califrnia, Berkeley put the finishing tuches n the wrld’s first nline husehld carbn calculatr. He hped that, if he culd shw peple hw much greenhuse gas was assciated with daily activities, they might change their behaviur and cntribute in sme small measure t saving the Amazn. Seventeen years later, trackers are prviding a wealth f ften-neglected infrmatin abut the carbn emissins f everyday life.
    Trackers wrk by asking users t answer questins such as: hw many miles a year d yu drive;
hw much is yur annual husehld electricity bill; hw ften d yu eat meat? They then calculate a persnal r husehld estimate f emissins f carbn-dixide equivalent (等价物) per year. What d they tell us?
Dr Jnes describes the main husehld plluting activities as “cars, cal, cws and cnsumptin, rughly in that rder”. By far the largest single surce f emissins is the family vehicle. Swapping it fr an electric vehicle wuld save ver 6 tnnes, r an eighth f the average American husehld’s yearly emissins.
N ther change wuld elicit that much saving, thugh electricity in the hme is respnsible fr ver 5 tnnes f carbn emissins a year, s generating it with slar panels wuld cme clse. Like electric vehicles, a rf full f slar panels is nt cheap. Changing diets csts less, and American husehlds cnsume meat wrth 2.7 tnnes f CO2e a year, far mre than mst peple. If Americans went vegetarian, that wuld be like half an average slar rf.
Over the next 30 years, many cuntries are prmising t mve t net-zer carbn, implying that husehld emissins will have t be cut t clse t nthing. Trackers, it seems, have daunting(令人怯步的) lessns fr public bdies and private husehlds alike.
Why did Dr Jnes put frward the idea f carbn trackers?
T keep track f husehld activities.
T calculate the carbn emissins f everyday life.
    T remind peple t adpt a lw-carbn lifestyle.
T learn hw greenhuse gas was related t daily activities.
What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?
    The purpse f the inventin.
The targeted users f the inventin.
    The imprvement f the inventin.
The perating principles f the inventin.
The underline wrd “elicit” in Para. 4 is clsest in meaning t .
    generateB. accumulateC. manageD. cnsume
Which f the fllwing is TRUE accrding t the text?
Trackers nly give alarming lessns t private husehlds.
The largest single surce f emissins is the electric vehicle.
Cnsuming mre vegetables than meat helps reduce carbn emissins.
Americans vegetarians spend half f their savings building an average slar rf.

A recent study published in the jurnal Nature has revealed that ur Medieval ancestrs left us with a bilgical legacy: Genes that may have helped them survive the Black Death make us mre vulnerable t certain diseases tday.
Barreir and his clleagues examined ancient DNA samples frm the bnes f mre than 200 peple frm Lndn and Denmark wh died ver abut 100 years that stretched befre, during, and after the Black Death swept thrugh that regin.
They identified fur genes that, depending n the variant, either prtected against r increased
vulnerability(易损性)t the bacteria that causes bubnic plague(腺鼠疫). They fund that what helped peple in Medieval times led t prblems generatins later — raising the frequency f mutatins
(突变) harmful in mdern times. Sme f the same genetic variants identified as prtective against
the plague are assciated with certain autimmune disrders, such as Crhn’s disease. In these srts f diseases, the immune system that defends the bdy against disease and infectin attacks the bdy's wn healthy tissues.
Past research has als sught t examine hw the Black Death affected the human genme. But Barreir said he believes theirs is the first demnstratin that the Black Death was imprtant t the evlutin f the human immune system. One unique aspect f the study, he said, was t fcus n a narrw time windw arund the event. It’s extremely sphisticated and addresses imprtant issues, such as hw the same versin f a gene can prtect peple frm a hrrific infectin and als put mdern peple at risk fr ther illnesses.
All f this begs the questin: Will the COVID-19 pandemic have a big impact n human evlutin? Barreir said he desn’t think s because the death rate is s much lwer and the majrity f peple wh have died had already had children. In the future, hwever, he said mre deadly pandemics may well cntinue t shape us at the mst basic level. “It's nt ging t stp. It’s ging t keep ging fr sure.”
Hw did Barreir’s team cme up with the finding?
By analyzing DNA samples frm targeted bnes.
By testing the vulnerability f fur specific genes.
By identifying the frequency f harmful mutatins.
By fcusing n the cnsequences f autimmune disrders.
What des Barreir believe make their research distinct frm previus research?
It is the first t shw a variant f gene can lead t infectin.
It illustrates hw gene variants can make us free f immune disrders.
It fcuses n an extensive time windw arund the Black Death event.
It is the first t cnfirm the plague is respnsible fr certain immune disrders.
Which f the fllwing statements will Barreir prbably agree with?
There will be mre pandemics causing death t peple.
COVID-19 pandemic will cntinue t impact human evlutin.
New pandemics may still influence hw human immune system develps.
Mdern peple are prtected frm deadly pandemics due t the same gene.
What is a suitable title fr the text?
Genetic variants: They make us victims f the Black Death
Genetic twist: Medieval plague may have shaped ur immunity
Time windw: The factr plays an imprtant rle in a recent study
Deadly pandemics: They will keep changing ur immune system fr sure
