Brave Patient A Happy Ending Death f a Village N Mre Fighting
Stry A ___________________D Chuc is a 48-year-ld Vietnamese farmer whse tw daughters and aunt were killed by American sldiers in My Lai that day.[1] He and his family were eating breakfast when the American sldiers entered the village and rdered all civilians ut f their hmes. Tgether with ther villagers,they were marched a few hundred metres int the village square where they were tld t sit. “Still we had n reasn t be afraid,”Chuc remembered. “Everyne was calm. We’d seen it all befre.” Then he watched in surprise as the sldiers set up a machine gun. The calm ended and panic set in. The peple began weeping and praying. One man shwed his identificatin papers t a sldier,but the American simply said,“Srry.” Then the shting started. Tw f ur men then threw their equipment ff and climbed ut f the trench with their hands abve their heads as ur representatives. Tw f the Germans did the same. They greeted each ther and shk hands. Then we all gt ut f the trench. Bill(ur fficer)tried t prevent it but it was t late,s he and the ther fficersclimbed ut,t. We,and the Germans,walked thrugh the mud and met in the middle f n-man’s land.We spent all day with ne anther. Sme f them culd speak English. By the lk f them,their trenches were in as bad a state as ur wn. One f their men,speaking in English,said that he had wrked in England fr sme years and that he was fed up t the neck with this war and wuld

be glad when it was ver. We tld him he wasn’t the nly ne wh was fed up with it. The German fficer asked Bill if we wuld like sme beer and they brught them ver t us. Bill distributed the beer amng us and we cnsumed a lt. The fficers came t an understanding that we wuld celebrate Christmas in temprary peace until midnight.Just befre midnight,we all decided nt t start firing befre they did. We’d frmed a bnd and during the whle f Bxing Day,we never fired a sht and they the same;each side seemed t be waiting fr the ther t set the ball rlling. One f their men shuted acrss in English and asked hw we had enjyed the beer. We replied that we were very grateful and spent the whle day chatting with them. Stry C ___________________I gt a phne call frm the chief nurse,saying,“Yu’ve gt a patient there wh is ging t get an award. Make sure that the ward lks gd.”This really turned me ff t begin with,“Let’s clean up the ward because we’ve gt VIPs cming in.”Well,the VIPs happened t be a general and a grup f abut a dzen peple. It was this patient’s secnd visit t us and this time he’d had bth his legs blwn ff —he was all-f-abut 20 years ld. When he was waking up after the surgen had finished,he whispered,“Dn’t yu remember me,ma’am?” I said,“Oh yeah!”But really I didn’t because there were s many f them. The general was cming t give him the award because he happened t be number 20,000 t cme thrugh this hspital. They had this little ceremny,where they presented him with a Purple Heart and a watch. As the general handed him the watch,“frm the army,t shw ur appreciatin,”the kid mre r less threw the watch back at him. He said smething like,“I can’t accept this,sir;it’s nt ging t help me walk.”
