One city will go dark to keep birds away from danger
Starting October 1, 2021, Philadelphia is beginning a program called Lights Out Philly. Bird Safe Philly is asking building owners and people who live in the area to turn off all outside lights that aren’t necessary between 12 o’clock in the midnight and 6 o’clock in the morning, Pennsylvania Post reported. So far, many of the city’s best-known and tallest buildings will be taking part in.
The main goal is to help keep migrating(迁徙)birds away from danger. Many birds die along the way. Besides the human actions, one of the biggest dangers comes from things humans have built. Scientists say that one billion birds may die every year in the US alone as a result of flying into tall buildings.
Other tall buildings, such as electricity lines and cell towers (信号塔)also cause many bird deaths. Many migrating birds die because of getting troubled by the glass and lights of buildings. The windows can reflect(映出) things like the sky or trees, which cause birds to fly into the glass. Bright city lights add another difficulty, because they think the lights are stars that guide them.

“Did you often go skating last year?” I asked. Jen shook her head and looked at me. Finally, she said, “On Thanksgiving, Mom and I always went to visit some friends who lived on a farm. I especially loved seeing their big turkeys.”
Before that, I never thought about how Jen felt those days—she now had a new stepfather and a new stepmother, and stayed in a new town and a new home. Jen and her mom used to live near a lake, but they had to move up north with us after her mom and my dad got married. She experienced more changes than me.
Jen seemed so sad, and I felt sad, too. Then I wanted to think of some ways to cheer her up on this Thanksgiving Day.
That day after a heavy snowfall, I invited her to go outside. We made a large snowball and a small snowball together. Then we shaped a ball behind the big snowball as a tail. Jen mixed some food coloring with water, saying, “We can color the tail.” Then our snow turkey had a red, blue, green, and yellow tail. We were so busy that we didn’t notice our parents were coming up to us. Dad found a hat for the snow turkey, and Mom wrapped her scarf(围巾)around its neck. Finally, Jen turned on a bright smile, which we never saw.
“Thanks for coming up with this great idea!” my new mom said quietly in my ear, “You’re really a good brother!” A happy feeling went through my body. I said without thinking, “Thank you for bringing us happiness, too.” Suddenly, I saw tears of joy in her eyes.
From then on, Jen became much happier, and so did I. We began to share happiness and sadness with each other. And we became real brother and sister.
