There is no doubt that Internet has made our lives more convenient. We no longer have to carry cash around. We can download anything whenever we need it. People’s lives have been changed by online communities and social networks.
Jan Tchamani, an English teacher in Birmingham, UK, was seriously ill suddenly and had to leave her job. At the age of 50, she found herself stuck at home with only her computer to keep her company. After a while, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonely and bored. She could listen to music, watch films, play games, and know what was happening around the world. She also joined an online group where she could talk about her problems and get support and advice from others. She realized that the Internet could have a great influence on people. It could make people have a close relationship.
She was so encouraged by the people she met online that she decided to start an IT club to teach older people how to use computers and the Internet. From grasses to trees, plants come in all colors, shapes and sizes. There are about 350,000 types of plants in the world. Let’s enter the world of plants and learn more about them.
How do plants make food?
Like all living things, plants need food to live. They make food for themselves by photosynthesis (光合作用). This happens in the leaves. To make food, plants need sunlight, ________ and H2O. They use the energy from the sun to turn all of those things into ________ and sugars.
What do we not really know about plants?
◆Fighting
Plants fight against each other to live. Only two percent of the sunlight gets to the forest floor. That’s why some plants spread their leaves to fight for sunlight.
◆Helping each other
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar (胡杨的根) are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots.
◆Defending
Each kind of plant has its own ways to protect itself. Some flowers give off a bad smell. Some even have teeth.
Mimosa pudica (含羞草)When you touch it, it folds up its leaves. Scientists believe this helps the plant fight enemies. The sudden movement of its leaves can scare enemies away.
Why are plants important to us? ◆Air
Plants can provide us with clean air. They take in CO2 and make O2 humans and animals need. They make 98% of O2 we breathe.
◆Water
Plants help clean water and reduce floods. An evergreen tree can hold more than 15,000 liters of water per year, reducing the risk of flooding.
◆Food
The world’s food supply depends on about 150 plant species (物种). Just 12 plant species provide three-quarters of the world’s food.
A report showed that 140,000 plants are at risk of disappearing. To protect these plants, five national parks were set up in China last year. And the first National Botanical Garden opened in Beijing this year. They will play an important part in protecting the endangered plants.

People celebrate World Health Day on April 7 each year. The day is used to highlight (强调) the importance of personal health. In fact there are many new inventions that can make our lives healthier and safer. Let’s take look at some of them.
We usually brush our teeth without thinking too much about what we’re actually doing. To make sure our focus is back to the task at hand, dentist Craig Kohler from the US created the world’s first toothbrush with a built-in HD camera. It lets us closely see the inside of our mouth when we brush our teeth to get them cleaner than ever. The toothbrush can be connected to smartphones and tablets with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. We can even zoom in and out of certain areas of the mouth.
Can you use the smartphone to “wash” your hands? A South Korean company has created digital sanitizer (电子洗手液) called UVLEN, connecting it to your phone’s torch can help clean your hands with a high-tech ultraviolet light (紫外线光). It can kill germs (细菌) and viruses, including the coronavirus, in 10 seconds. According to the World Health Organization, UVC (短波紫外线) light can cause skin and eye damage. But UVLEN uses a UVC light with a wavelength between 207 to 222 nanometers (纳米). It is said to kill germs without harming your skin.
An invention that combines a broom and vacuum (真空吸尘器) has been created. It looks like an ordinary broom, but its designers say the Vabroom will clean up common household dirt and debris (垃圾碎片)—all without a dustpan (簸箕)! The vacuum is really easy to use. Just tilt (倾斜) the broom—you don’t even need to bend over—and press the vacuum part to the floor. It is powerful enough to deal with most debris, including glass and candy.

A. For making the toothbrush connect to smartphones.
B. For making us focus on the process of brushing teeth.
C. For brushing the teeth without thinking too much.
45. What is UVLEN used for?
A. It can provide people with a cleaner light.
B. It can kill the germ and virus on the hands.
C. It can be used for protecting our skin.
46. How can people make Vabroom start to work?
A. By pressing the vacuum part.
B. By using a dustpan.
C. By connecting with wifi.

Recently, the topic of friendship has brought about a lot of discussion online. Some people think that relationships need to be intentionally taken care of. Friendship is no exception (例外). But others think that the most important thing for friends is to be comfortable and natural with one another.
Lei Tao, 16
Friendship is founded on interaction (互动), and the interaction sometimes needs intentional ideas. If none of the friends are willing to step forward to communicate, the relationship will gradually disappear. For example, this term, I transferred (转) to a new class, and those classmates who I used to treasure began to grow distant from me. It’s a sad fact, and we should learn this lesson to better improve our friendships.
Wang Hong, 16
Some people say that true friends can understand each other with only a smile. I have to point out that this kind of friendship is rare. Friends usually need to express themselves to let others learn more about them. What’s more, if there is a misunderstanding between two friends, the friendship will be easily broken. However, friendships can be kept and improved if they talk more, play together more or send gifts to each other.
Chen Yuhao, 16
I think friendship is a natural relationship that makes people feel comfortable. It depends on people’s similar hobbies, so friends will naturally get along well with each other. According to that, friends learn quite a lot about each other and understand each other’s meaning with only a smile or eye contact. True friends will gradually become a part of our life.
Sun Yanxue, 16
Sometimes, intentionally protecting the friendship seems to develop a relationship. But this kind of friendship is fragile (脆弱的). It can be broken if there’s something wrong. Humans are greedy (贪婪的). Once friends get used to the gains, they may distance themselves from us if we stop showing our kindness one day. As a matter of fact, the key to keeping friendship is based on understanding with each other.
49. The underlined word “intentionally” means ________.
A. with kindness and love B. with purpose C. with carefulness
50. Lei Tao showed his opinion by ________.
A. comparing with others
B. doing the research
C. giving the example of himself
51. Wang Hong believes that ________.
A. if you treat your friend nicely, you will get a lot of new friends
B. friendship will be easily broken when we are not understood
C. friendship will be kept for a long time by giving each other gifts
52. According to the students, we can know the common idea is that ________.
A. understanding each other is necessary way to keep friendship
B. similar hobbies can make friends talk more and share more
C. the cause of distance between friends is less interaction
53. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. find the way to keep friendship
B. show love and kindness to friends
C. give the direction of making new friends

Chinese people are eating too much salt. On average, people in China eat about 10.5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams recommended by Chinese Dietary Guidelines. China now has one of the highest salt intakes (摄入量) in the world. 54
If the guide is followed properly, the average salt intake for Chinese people will drop by 20 percent by 2030. 55 So companies have taken action to improve their production techniques and change flavors.
56 For example, a 104-gram can of Lay’s classic potato chips has about 0.66 grams of salt in it, which takes up over 10 percent of the recommended daily salt intake. A 100-gram bag of Kangshifu instant noodles has nearly 2 grams of salt.
A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health. 57 If people eat too much salt, it will increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes (中风).
58 And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in the United States found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, your taste buds (味蕾) will gradually get used to it and you will feel that your food tastes the same as it did before.
A. Less salt leads to better health.
B. More people pay attention to the health.
C. The salt we take in mainly comes from processed food.
D. To deal with this, China had the first salt reduction guide for its food industry.
E. The guide calls for food companies to have less salt in their products.
F. However, things will develop in an opposite direction when they become extreme (极端).

Dust and sand storms are among nature’s most terrible phenomena (现象). High winds lift dirt or sand particles (颗粒物) into the air, causing air pollution, property damage, injuries, and deaths. No matter where you are, it’s a good idea to know what to do. Here are some ways to protect you if you see a wall of sand racing toward you.
Put a mask over your nose and mouth. If you have a mask designed to filter out small particulates, put it on at once. If you don’t have a mask, put some other pieces of cloth around your nose and mouth. Try to make it a bit wet if you have enough water.
Protect your eyes. Eyeglasses offer protection from blowing dust or sand, but airtight goggles (密封护目镜) are better. If you don’t have goggles, protect your face with your arm as you move. Then wrap a piece of cloth in a quick way around your head to protect your eyes and ears.
Keep yourself from flying objects. Cover as much of your body as possible to protect yourself from the sand. The sand can hurt, but a dust storm’s high winds can also carry more dangerous objects. If you find yourself without protection, try to stay low to the ground and make a protection of your head with your book, a backpack or a pillow.
Wait out the storm. Don’t try to move through the storm. It’s not safe. Stay where you are and wait for it to pass before you try to move to a different location. If you can quickly reach your home before a dust storm reaches you, get there as quickly as possible and stay inside. Close all windows and doors, and wait out the storm.
As is known, dust and sand storm are one of the most terrible phenomena that we have experienced. They have a bad 59 on our life. So you are supposed to know how to protect yourself wherever you are. The first thing is to wear masks. 60 you have a mask, you have to use some other piece of cloth around your face. What’s more, protect your eyes by using googles. If you don’t have them, you can wrap your eyes with cloth 61 . In addition, when you are suffering from the dust and sand storm, you should make an effort to stay low to ground, and 62 your head with some objects to keep yourself from flying objects. Last but not the least remember to wait out the storm. That is to say, it is much too 63 to move through the storm. Before a dust reaches you, stay in your home as possible as you can.

Located in the northeast, Sanxingdui Museum is famous for its long history and splendid culture. It is a modern museum which is 40 kilometers from the north of Chengdu.
The Sanxingdui Ruins drew the world’s attention. Chinese historians announced that they have found more than 500 cultural relics (文物) in six pits (坑) at the site, which dates back over 3,200 years.
The Sanxingdui Ruins were found by accident. A farmer found them in 1929 when he was digging ditch (挖渠). People found some artifacts, but didn’t know how important they were. After 1986, some experts thought these pits were used for sacrifices (祭祀). But they were not sure. The new findings show that they were right. In October 2020, the newest relics were found in six pits. A group of researchers began to unearth (发掘) them.
Where do we come from?
The ancient Shu civilization that built Sanxingdui is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Chinese civilization. Its discovery made experts think more about where Chinese civilization (文明) started. It seems that it started not only along the Yellow River, but also along the Yangtze River.
Are there any new findings? How were the relics found? What do they mean? Why is Sanxingdui important? Let’s find out the mysteries!
Bronze (铜) heavenly tree
Among the findings, the huge bronze (铜) heavenly tree is no doubt one of the largest and one of the most mysterious. 花费了八年的时间来重建这棵铜树。Experts say that the tree should be even higher as its treetop is still missing. They believe it reflects the strong and rich ancient Shu.
Bronze figure statue
The “highest” ruler is this giant standing bronze figure, which is 260.8 centimeters high. It is the largest and the oldest of its kind that has been found so far. But no matter who he was, the statue was certainly used as a ritual object. It stands for the great power of ancient Shu.
64. Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
65. Please complete the timetable
66. What is the historical meaning of the Sanxingdui Ruins?
67. What do the Bronze heavenly tree and Bronze figure statue commonly show?
68. Please translate the underlined sentence into English.
69. Are you interested in the historical relics? Why or why not?

We were silently waiting on the platform in the late afternoon. There he was, my 80-year-old grandfather with his grey hair and there I was, a teenage girl in my jeans and T-shirt. I was wondering how I was going to get through the next two days. Why did I agree to be with my strange grandpa on the two days' train ride from our city to another?
No one else wanted to be his partner along the way since my grandfather refused to take a plane. Unlike him, I loved to fly because I wanted to get to the destination as quickly as possible.
No matter how much he was told about the swiftness of flying, my grandfather refused to book a flight, saying, "It is not just about time; it's the experience of getting there. "
With my first step onto the train, the journey was already different from what I expected. The train was modern and filled with friendly travelers. We seated ourselves in the dining car, where we could enjoy food and drinks while watching the beauty of nature pass by. Instead of listening to my own music, I listened to my grandfather talking about my family history that I had never had the time or patience to learn about. For the first time I felt I understood him. I was thankful for our time together on the train.
In this rapidly changing world, we often miss important moments. It is necessary to slow down and listen to elders who offer a piece of their history or experience and share their feelings.
Life isn't just about the destination; it's about the journey.
49. How did the writer feel while she was waiting for the train with her grandpa?
A. Upset. B. Thankful. C. Relaxed.

51. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The writer listened to her own music happily.

A. The writer will act as the elders.
B. The writer won't take the train anymore.
C. The writer will spend more time with her grandpa.
53. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A Loving Grandfather B. A Special Ride C. A Boring Day

Critical thinking isn't about thinking more or thinking harder, but about thinking better. Training your critical thinking skills can open up a door to a better world. But the journey of being a person with critical thinking is difficult. It requires a lot of hard work and practice.
Train your questioning skills.
Asking questions is perhaps the key act of critical thinking. If you don't know what questions to ask, or don't ask the questions in the first place, you may as well not get the answer. Finding the answer is what critical thinking is all about.
Think several steps ahead.
Don't just think one or two steps ahead. Think several. Imagine you're a chess grandmaster who's fighting with someone with the ability to think several steps ahead. You have to match intelligence with him. Once the problem you are working on may begin, use your imagination to guess what the possible futures will be.
Spare at least 30 minutes a day to improve your brain function.
Spend 30 minutes in your busy day making your brain more powerful. There are a few ways that you can do this:
●Try to be active in finding the solution to a problem a day. It could be a theoretical or a personal one.
●Find the time to exercise regularly. 30minutes of exercise— as little as a walk around the neighborhood——can help improve brain function.
●Eat the right kinds of foods. Avocados, blueberries, wild salmon, nuts and seeds, as well as brown rice play an important role in keeping your brain healthy.
As long as you keep practicing, you can improve your critical thinking a lot.
