How can we reduce the risk?
There are four general approaches to dealing with volcanic dangers. We can try to keep the danger from occurring—often an impossible task. We can try to change its path or reduce its impact on existing development. We can take steps to protect future development. We can also do our best to have disaster response plans in place before they are needed.
Removing the Threat
Clearly, there is no way to stop an eruption. We can, however, attempt to reduce the eruption’s effects by strengthening structures, for example, building protective works such as walls to make lava (熔岩) flow away from developed areas. Such efforts can be and have been successful, but are of limited use in a large-scale eruption.
Planning for the Future
Protecting future development from volcanic dangers is a simple task. Before building houses, we should judge the risk. If the risk seems too great, a safer location should be found. This type of planning is very effective, but all too often, people are drawn to the lush(葱郁的),rolling land of a quiet volcano.
Disaster Preparedness (预案)
When a volcano comes to life, a few weeks may not be enough time to avoid a tragedy. Planning is the key to saving lives. Well before the warning signs occur, people must be educated about volcanic dangers. Escape plans must be in place. Communication between scientists, officials, the media, and the general public should be practiced. Emergency measures must be thought out and agreed upon.
If you doubt the importance of these efforts, take another look at past volcanic tragedies, such as the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz. Communication failures left the town of Armero unprepared for escape. When a deadly mudflow came down the slope (斜坡), 21,000 people—90 percent of the town’s people—died.

I just thought I would share with you all something that happened to me one day when I was driving home from work.
There was a guy riding his Harley Davidson behind me. I didn’t think anything of it until I turned off the highway to head toward home and he turned off too. Then I turned into another street and he followed me again.
I was starting to feel a bit nervous especially when I turned into my own street and he followed me there too. I pulled into my driveway and he pulled up on the street in front of my house. I was feeling quite scared by then.
He was all dressed up in his bike gear and I wondered what was going on. He came up to me and said my indicator wasn't working and he was concerned for me and wanted to make sure I got to my destination ok and knew about the problem so I could get them fixed.
I thanked him for his kindness and he got back on his bike and drive off. I felt ashamed the moment he left away, for I regarded him as a bad guy at the very beginning. However, it turned out that he might have looked tough but he had a heart of gold.
I learnt an important lesson that day not to be so quick to judge people. As a matter of fact, it is often the case that we always misunderstand someone on account of our personal experience. But if all of us built a wall used as a protective fence between each other, we would live in a world filled with freezing atmosphere. So if we are followed by others, we may stop and ask “what is up?” instead of running away as quickly as possible. After all, it is trust and patience that make our community a better place to live in.
24.What happened to the author?
A.He was robbed of his bike B.He was led home by a stranger.
C.He was assisted by a guy. D.He drove off his highway.
25.How did the author feel when getting into his own street?
A.Excited. B.Frightened.
C.Astonished. D.Annoyed
26.What can we learn about the guy from the text?
A.He gets accustomed to following others.
B.He wanted to have words with the author.
C.He intended to scare passers-by.
D.He is a kind-hearted man.
27.What is the author's attitude towards the guy?
A.Grateful. B.Ambiguous.
C.Indifferent. D.Controversial.
C
“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” When it comes to device addiction, this may very well be the case. If you believe that how you engage with your smartphone has no impact on your children, think again.
One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were much more likely to have behavior issues. In short, this obsession led to “technoference” or interruption of everyday interactions between parents and kids. In some cases, this interruption happened in face-to-face conversations, and in other cases, the devices disrupted playtime or meals. When this type of “technoference” occurred, parents rated their children as displaying more behavior problems, including whining, losing temper, sulking (生闷气), and becoming frustrated.
In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral (双边的) signaling systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the brain. For example, infants and toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm. This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child’s development.
With the arrival of smartphones, many parents are distracted and stuck in what experts are calling “continuous partial attention” mode. This leads to significant and recurring disruptions to the parent-child conversation flow, which can impair not only a child’s language learning ability but also their school achievements overall.
While your habit may seem harmless, your kids may actually be imitating your behavior and forming a dependence of their own. One study reported that some teenagers may spend up to 12 hours — half of an entire day — online and mindlessly swiping through social media apps without engaging in any one piece of content beyond a few seconds.
As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Try to limit time spent with technology, especially when it diverts (牵制) your attention from other priorities. Shut down smartphones at dinner. Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology brings. While you may not be able to completely cut ties with new modes of communication, you can be sure that your children get the one-on-one time they need to develop into healthy, happy adults.
28.Which is TRUE according to the studies in the passage?
A.Parents rate their children’s behavior at parent-children time interruptions.
B.Children’s poor school achievements are due to their addiction to social media.
C.The more engagement of parents, the better development of speech in children.
D.Children imitate parents’ behavior but form their own harmless habits.
29.What’s the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A.To further scientifically explain a child’s behavioral problem.
B.To give an argument for the problem of a child’s language learning ability.
C.To support the argument for a child’s addiction to devices.
D.To present background information for the topic of the passage.
30.In what tone does the writer speak to parents in the last paragraph?
A.Disrespectful. B.Apologetic.
C.Negative. D.Friendly.
31.Why does the writer start the passage with the quote “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”?
A.To stress children will follow parents’ example.
B.To provide evidence of device addiction.
C.To show the close bond between parent and children.
D.To highlight the final solution to device addiction.

For its outsize reputation, Silicon Valley is a narrow thing. America’s innovation (创新) capital mainly consists of many small towns and cities on the San Francisco peninsula (半岛) squeezed between the coastal mountain range to the west and the bay to the east. It is traditionally made up of the top of Santa Clara County as well as the very bottom of San Mateo County.
Not long ago, this place was known as the Valley of Heart’s Delight, famous for its plentiful fruit yards. The circumstances that turned the countryside into a technological center have been studied carefully, and many have attempted to replicate the magic in Silicon Valley. Would-be followers would be right to conclude that access to basic research and start-up capital. But for the past two decades, photographer Beth Yarnelle Edwards has been documenting the one aspect often unnoticed by these observers: Silicon Valley’s fundamentally suburban (郊区的)character.
Edwards’ Suburban Dreams project was born in 1997. “I felt lonely and trapped, but I realized that the people around me really loved being there, ” she recalled. She began by photographing friends and acquaintances near her home in San Carlos. The project grew as she interviewed her subjects to understand how their environment shaped their hopes and dreams. “It’s really important to me that the pictures are true to what is happening in the home,” she says. In 2016, Edwards began revisiting her subjects to see the effects of the growth and the wealth. But she was surprised by how little had changed in the lives of those still there.
Many Silicon Valley natives do not recognize much of what they see there nowadays. It’s true that modest bungalows have been replaced by very large houses. Almost everything is more crowded and more expensive. But a lot will never change. The main roads — Highway 101, the El Camino — are the same. So too the freestanding oak trees and gentle hills surrounded by golden grass. And at the heart of it all, as Edwards’ photos illustrate, the suburban dream is still alive.
32.Where is Silicon Valley?
A.In the center of San Francisco.
B.On the San Francisco Peninsula.
C.On top of Santa Clara County.
D.At the bottom of San Mateo County.
33.Which of the following best explains “replicate” underlined in paragraph 2?
A.Copy. B.Replace. C.Study. D.Report.
34.What did the project focus on later?
A.People’s hopes and dreams.
B.The wish of the acquaintances.
C.The true life of the local people.
D.Silicon Valley’s influences on the locals.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Crazy Changes, Crazy Followers B.Wild Dream, Successful project
C.Lively City, Major Innovation D.Unchanging life, Unchanging Dream

21.A 22.C 23.B
由文章第一段“There are four general approaches to dealing with volcanic dangers. We can try to keep the danger from occurring—often an impossible task. We can try to change its path or reduce its impact on existing development. We can take steps to protect future development. We can also do our best to have disaster response plans in place before they are needed.(有四种处理火山危险的一般方法。 故选A项。
根据文章第三段的“Before building houses, we should judge the risk. If the risk seems too great, a safer location should be found. This type of planning is very effective, but all too often, people are drawn to the lush (葱郁的),rolling land of a quiet volcano.(在盖房子之前,我们应该判断风险。
根据文章最后一段“If you doubt the importance of these efforts, take another look at past volcanic tragedies, such as the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz. Communication failures left the town of Armero unprepared for escape. When a deadly mudflow came down the slope (斜坡), 21,000 people—90 percent of the town’s people—died.
24.C 25.B 26.D 27.A
根据文章第四段“He came up to me and said my indicator wasn’t working and he was concerned for me and wanted to make sure I got to my destination ok and knew about the problem so I could get them fixed.”(他找到我,说我的指示器坏了,他很关心我,想确保我到达目的地,知道问题所在,这样我就可以修好它们。)
根据文章第三段“I was starting to feel a bit nervous especially when I turned into my own street.”(我开始感到有点紧张,尤其是当我转到我自己的街道时)可知作者进入自己的街道时紧张害怕。
根据据文章第四段“He came up to me and said my indicator wasn’t working and he was concerned for me and wanted to make sure I got to my destination ok and knew about the problem so I could get them fixed.”(他找到我,说我的指示器坏了,他很关心我,想确保我到达目的地,知道问题所在,这样我就可以修好它们。)
根据文章第五段“I thanked him for his kindness and he got back on his bike and drive off.”(我感谢他的好意,然后他骑上自行车开走了。)
28.C 29.C 30.D 31.A
根据第三段最后一句“This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child’s development.(这种关系对话模式对孩子的成长非常重要)”以及联系上文内容的科学根据、举例可知,家长的参与越多,孩子的语言能力发展越好。故选C项。
根据第三段内容“In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral signaling systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the brain. For example, infants and toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm.(此外,根据儿童发展专家的说法,在成人和儿童之间存在着双边信号系统,帮助构建大脑的基本结构。
故选A项。
32.B 33.A 34.D 35.D
根据文章第一段America’s innovation (创新) capital mainly consists of many small towns and cities on the San Francisco peninsula (半岛) squeezed between the coastal mountain range to the west and the bay to the east.
The circumstances that turned the countryside into a technological center have been studied carefully, and many have attempted to replicate the magic in Silicon Valley. 故选A。
But a lot will never change.和And at the heart of it all, as Edwards’ photos illustrate, the suburban dream is still alive.
36.G 37.A 38.B 39.F 40.D
How many times have we put off our dreams until tomorrow? We have to go for them now!
Therefore, today is all we have.(因此,今天是我们所拥有的一切)以及后文Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.(现在就做决定去追逐每一个梦想,大的或小的)由此可知,上下文都强调了要利用现在的时间去实现梦想,即不要带着还未实现的梦想死去。 故选A。
Other people may be able to sing. But they'll never be able to sing exactly like you.( 其他人可能会唱歌。 Thus, it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is, and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.( 因此,找出你的天赋是什么,并利用它来改善你和你周围的人的生活是你的责任)由此可知,本句与上文构成并列关系,都是在列举其他人和你能做一样的事情,但是永远也不可能与你一样,上文举了唱歌的例子,本句举出写作的例子,且上文中Other people与B选项中Other people构成句式上的一致。
One of the biggest dream killers is fear. There are so many people who could have achieved amazing things if only they weren't afraid. Just think about all the things you've wanted to do, but allowed fear to convince you that you weren't capable. Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create.
You'll be much happier if you go for it(如果你去做,你会更快乐)以及上文Imagine how much happier you'll be if you're living the life you always dreamed about. The only thing that is stopping you is yourself.( 想象一下,如果你过着你一直梦想的生活,你会多么快乐。

My Favorite Motto
The motto I observe is Practice makes perfect! It means excellence can only be obtained after you have put to use what you have learnt and have tried it over and over again.
Many examples can be cited to illustrate the proverb, among which learning English is a case in point. Admittedly, memorizing pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar rules contributes to a good command of English. But all these can quickly escape from our memory. Only when we practice speaking, reading, and writing English frequently can it be upgraded to a higher level.
Engage yourself in practice and you will become a perfect doer.
