During the first COVID-19 outbreak, Dr Kirby White struggled to get enough disposable gowns(一次性罩衣), so she and her colleague Dr Nicole Lowe decided to act, In March 2020, they developed a gown that could be laundered and reused, allowing them to keep seeing patients at their Bendigo's clinic.
“The second COVID-19 wave made it impossible for anyone to purchase disposable gowns,” said Kirby, who explained one reusable gown lasts as long as 130 single-use gowns. “It was important to have a reusable gown. We didn't know how long the pandemic would last so we needed a sustainable solution.”
Two weeks later, Gowns for Doctors was created. Taking to social media, Kirby, 36, shared the initiative(新方案) in a local Facebook group. Overnight, hundreds of volunteers put up their hands to sew, donate fabric and distribute the gowns. She was blown away by the unbelievable response. “We had 400 emails overnight!” Kirby said. “It's the spirit that allowed us to send out so many gowns to people in need. Months later, Gowns for Doctors still has a lot of gowns if medical staff are in need of them. We are continuing to help those who need them.”
The success of the initiative has now gone global, after a company contacted Kirby to create a Barbie doll(芭比娃娃) in her image, celebrating all the healthcare heroes globally. “Seeing my one-of-a-kind Barbie doll for the first time was a heart-skip moment. There were tears of joy. She looks just like me!”
After hand-packing every order, Dr White loved seeing healthcare workers wearing the donated gowns. “We've been sent photos of medical staff wearing their gowns with big smiles,” she said. “Everyone has been so appreciative; we are flooded with thank-you cards. It's so nice to see them.”

The surface of Mars is etched(蚀刻) with ancient river valleys and lake basins. Some researchers think that liquid water once flowed on the Red Planet. Today, Mars is too cold for much, if any, liquid water to exist. And 3. 8 billion years ago, when the flowing water formed, the sun was fainter than it is today, making it even harder to imagine a warm Martian climate. That's why many researchers think Mars may have gone in and out of deep freezes.
Some researchers have suggested that early Mars only melt when large asteroid(小行星) impacts or volcanic eruptions temporarily warmed the planet. But Kasting, a geologist at Pennsylvania State University, thinks warm windows from such dramatic events would have been too brief to carve the vast valleys that exist on Mars. Now, Kasting and his colleagues have come up with an alternative explanation: They think Mars may have experienced a series of climate cycles caused by changes in the strength of the greenhouse effect.
The idea goes like this: When Mars was cold and frozen, volcanoes continued to erupt the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and hydrogen into the atmosphere. There, the gas blanket trapped heat and warmed the planet up until liquid water began to flow, forming Mars' rivers and lakes. However, warm temperatures and abundant water would also have sped up certain chemical reactions that consumed carbon dioxide, mitigating the greenhouse effect and cooling the planet back down again. Then the cycle would repeat.
Kasting shared his theory with other astronomers at the December meeting of the Ameri- can Geophysical Union in San Francisco, and in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. So far, Kasting's team has only shown that such an explanation is possible. But the researchers say field trips could help test the idea by looking for evidence of multiple warm events, and their duration.

As the West dries out and heats up, wildfires get bigger and more destructive, officials tasked with preventing and battling the fires could soon have a new thing to add to their set of tools. The high-tech help could come from an area not normally associated with fighting wildfires: artificial intelligence (AI).
Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, based in Jefferson County, has decades of experience of managing satellites, exploring space and providing information. By generating more timely information about on-the-ground conditions and running computer programs to process huge amounts of data, Lockheed Martin representatives say they can map the extent of a fire in minutes rather than the hours it can take now. They say the AI that the company has applied to military use can improve predictions about a fire's direction and speed.
“The situation that wildland firefighters work in is a dynamic environment with multiple activities and responsibilities,” said Dan Lordan, senior manager at Lockheed Martin's Artificial Intelligence Center. Lockheed Martin aims to use its technology to reduce the time it takes to gather information and make decisions about wildfires. The quicker they can react, the faster they can control the fire and protect people's properties and lives.
Lockheed is working with a software company to build a digital model of a wildfire based on an area's topography(地形), condition of the plants, wind and weather to help forecast where and how it will burn. After the 2020 Cameron Peak fire, Colorado's largest wildfire, the company used the information about the fire, examined the more timely satellite data on fire conditions, and generated a model that was similar to the actual fire's movement.
“Applying AI to fighting wildfires isn't about taking people out of the field,” a Lockheed Martin spokesman said. “Somebody will always be there, but people currently in the field are surrounded by so much data that they can't sort through it fast enough. That's where AI can help.”
