Late in 2020, at a two-hour televised musical competition in Beijing, when Gao's favorite idol walked out, she could not afford to get too excited. She had to have her camera ready at all times to capture her idol’s moment on stage:any distraction could ruin that one perfect shot. While the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes are no longer in question, e-cigarettes remain in a gray zone. Things may be getting less gray, though.

A study from the University of North Carolina (UNC) shows that e-cigarette use, which delivers nicotine via vapor rather than tobacco smoke, may not be safe simply because it does not contain the same known cancer-causing material as tobacco cigarette smoke. The study showed e-cigarette smoke with chemical additives has a negative influence on the immune system. A University of Louisville study also showed that nicotine alone, independent of tobacco, can speed up atherosclerosis, a disease that can lead to heart attack.

Ilona Jaspers, a medical professor of UNC, and her team looked at nearly 600 immune genes and their responses to the stimuli. They examined tobacco smokers, non-smokers and e-cigarette users, testing their nasal fluid, urine and blood.

E-cigarette supporters may argue by pointing to the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) has claimed that many liquid additives are “Generally Recognized as Safe”. Jaspers says that the claim, though, applies only to oral consumption--swallowing in liquid form, while the potential danger due to the intake of additives through breathing is still unstudied. “The digestive systems and breathing systems are very different,"says Jaspers. “Our stomachs are full of acids that break down food and deal with chemicals, and this environment is very different from our breathing systems. We simply don't know what effects e-cigarettes have on our lungs.”

A new research, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), showed that cigarette smoking affects immune genes in the nose. Researchers found that e-cigarette use not only limited the growth of the same genes, but also in some cases the growth of a wider number of immune genes was limited. It's the act of breathing in vapor containing nicotine that does the work.

Jaspers and her team also conducted separate experiments on the additives. They aim to continue the research and will look into how long-term exposure to e-cigarette additives can affect the body.

It's long known to us that living close to major roads is harmful to people due to the exposure to air pollution. However, road traffic noise is also a widespread problem in cities whose impact on children's health remains poorly understood. A new study conducted at 38 schools in Barcelona suggests that traffic noise at schools has a harmful effect on the development of working memory and attention in primary school students.

The study included 2,680 children between 7and 10 years of age.To assess the possible impact of traffic noise on their cognitive development, the researchers focused on two abilities that develop rapidly during preadolescence and are essential for learning and school attainment: attention and working memory.

The fieldwork for the study was carried out over a 12-month period in2012 and 2013, during which the participants completed the cognitive tests four times.The aim of these tests was not only to assess their working memory and attention but also to study their evolution over time. Over the same period, noise measurements were taken in front of the 38 participating schools, as well as in the playgrounds and inside classrooms.

In the analysis of outdoor noise levels of schools, higher average noise levels and greater fluctuation （波动） in noise levels were both associated with poorer student performance on all tests. Inside the classroom, greater fluctuation in noise levels was also associated with slower progress over the course of the year on all cognitive tests. However, children exposed to higher average classroom noise levels over the course of the year performed worse than students in quieter classrooms only on the attention test, but not on the working memory test.

The researchers used the 2012 road traffic noise map of the city of Barcelona to estimate the average noise level at each participant's home In this case, however, no association was observed between residential noise and cognitive development.

“This could be because noise exposure at schools is more harmful as it affects vulnerable windows of concentration and learning processes," commented Maria Forester. On the other hand, although noise measurements were taken at the schools, noise levels at the children's homes were estimated using a noise map that may be less accurate and, in any case, only reflected outdoor noise. This, too, may have influenced the results.”
