A Youth Volunteer Activity Celebrating World Water Day
To mark World Water Day, which falls annually on March 22, the Students’ Union of our school organized a publicity campaign in the downtown area last Sunday morning.
Exhibition boards were set up showcasing water’s critical importance to human survival and prosperity, as well as China’s progress in water resource protection and water pollution prevention and control. Youth volunteers also distributed leaflets to the passers-by, popularizing knowledge about how to save water in everyday life.
The campaign has not only enhanced people’s awareness of water conservation and protection, but also further added our sense of social responsibility and historic mission.

As we were approaching the Heathrow turn-off, I had an idea. “Why don’t I just drop you at the airport now?” I said. “I’ll buy you a ticket and you can fly home.” “That’s so kind of you,” he replied. Then, after a pause, “and please don’t worry. I’ll definitely wire you the money when I get home.” I pulled onto the airport avenue and soon dropped him off outside the terminal building. I went to a cashpoint, got out 10 shiny new £20 notes and handed them over. He took the money and thanked me again and again.
Before he left to buy his air ticket, he gave me a huge hug. He took my phone number and said he’d call as soon as he could to arrange the transfer. I bid farewell to him without any real idea if I’d ever see the man or the money again. As I drove the final miles to my own house in London, I felt happier thinking about Brendan. He asked for help, for a lift to get home, and in good faith I gave them to him. That’s got to be a good thing.
录音原文:
Text 1
M: There’s too much furniture in here. You need to make the room look bigger.
W: Well, how can I make the room bigger?
M: You need to make the room appear bigger by taking some of the furniture out — like this desk.
Text 2
M: I love food from China’s Anhui province, and this restaurant did not disappoint us.
W: I didn’t realize how hungry we were! I knew we wanted to try great pork, tofu, and vegetable dishes. But I’m surprised we ate so much. I’m full up.
M: So am I!
Text 3
W: Would you and your friends like a nice pot of tea?
M: No thanks, Gran. I’d like a cup of coffee, and I think they would like orange juice if you have any?
W: Yes. It’s in the fridge. They can take it out themselves. How do you like your coffee?
Text 4
M: This river is great for walking along. But back in the 19th century it was made to carry goods.
W: I thought it was for enjoying wildlife! Why didn’t people use roads?
M: Cars weren’t invented then, so it’s more convenient to deliver goods by boats.
Text 5
M: Let me explain what you will do today. As part of the ‘Volunteer Silver Award’ project, you will be helping out in old people’s houses.
W: Then what can we do to help them? Like doing housework?
M: Yes, like cleaning the apartments, washing clothes and cooking food.
Text 6
W: There would be snow tonight according to the weather report. Apparently, there is a cold front coming in from the north.
M: But it’s cold enough already with this wind! We’re supposed to climb that mountain tomorrow. If there’s snow, then it will be pretty dangerous.
W: I know perhaps we should call it off and do it another day. We could still take a walk in the mountain valley, but maybe we stay at home if it rains.
M: Yes. I know it won’t be sunny, but I prefer walking through the valley anyway. Plus, we’ll get to see all sorts of wildlife along the river.
W: Great!
Text 7
M: It took me ages because the tool broke. And I tried to put the shelves onto your wall instead. Finally, I’ve finished putting them up in your room.
W: Thanks, but is it safe? I don’t want all my books falling on my head during the night.
M: Oh, so you want to put books on there? I wondered why you asked me to build the shelves here. Anyway, what is wrong with the bookshelves you’ve already got in your room?
W: They’re fine. But there are a lot of new novels I need to buy for my college course and I’ve nowhere to put them because my existing shelves are full. Mom said the best thing was to keep the old one and get you to put up new shelves for me!
Text 8
W: Hello, how can I help you today?
M: I’m looking to spend some time overseas during my gap year, but I need some inspiration about where I should go. I’ve thought about Europe and Africa, but I’m not sure.
W: Okay, well, you’ve come to the right place. How long are you looking to spend abroad? A year? Two months?
M: Half a year.
W: Have you got any savings? Or are you looking to earn money while you travel?
M: Both. I have saved up some money, but I’d also like to earn money while I’m traveling there. I’m training to be an electrician, but I don’t mind working as a waiter either.
W: What are your interests?
M: I like surfing and I like to keep fit. I also like animals and nature, so maybe flying to Africa would be good.
W: Actually, I think Australia might be better. There are lots of companies that offer Australia as a gap year destination. There are lots of beaches. You can go surfing, diving and play other outdoor sports. And all sorts of wonderful natural mysteries are waiting for you to explore and enjoy.
M: Brilliant. Sounds ideal. Let’s look there then…
Text 9
M: It’s great that you’ve volunteered to help the animals at this shelter. We really rely on people like you as we’re a charity and don’t make much money. The money we do raise all goes on the animals.
W: No problem. I love animals and I’m really looking forward to working with them. What will we be doing? Will we feed the animals?
M: Well, to start with, we need to clean the animals. I’m afraid it’s all a bit messy, so I hope you don’t mind getting your clothes dirty.
W: I thought we would do that sort of thing, so I’m wearing old clothes today. Will we clean the horses first?
M: The camels need to be cleaned before that. We have three, two females and a male. They are lovely animals but they do leave a mess! After that we have some rare pigs from Southeast Asia, and then the horses. The final animals we’ll be cleaning are the elephants.
W: Oh yes, I notice there are four of them. They are magnificent creatures.
M: We have five now. But soon we’ll have six, as one of them is about to give birth. The baby is due in May. We are all glad about that. Despite their size, they are so gentle… Okay, let’s get on with it, shall we? Follow me.
Text 10
M: Good morning, everyone. I’m so excited to be here with you today. As you know, you will soon be choosing what you want to do next with your life. Some of you will go off to universities, while others will leave and get jobs. I’m here to talk about another option: a sports scholarship.
I represent a group of American universities. We are looking for the best sports men and women in various sports fields who are willing to go to universities. They will improve their talents, learn new life skills, and generally have the time of their lives. And the best thing is that it is all paid for, including the course, the accommodation, and even the flights over there.
The reason I am here today is that your school has some of the best school sports results in the country. That means the school can provide perfect players that I’m looking for.
I will now put on a short promotional video that explains things, and then I’ll answer some questions if possible. If you are interested, you can bring our posters to your parents in the end. Thank you for listening. And good luck!
