    (2022春·江苏苏州·八年级校考期中)“I”—storyteller  Bertie—storyteller’s husband  The White Prince—a lion
…We never had children of our own—just the White Prince—and I can tell you, he was enough of a family for anyone. He walked freely in the park just as we had planned he would, and ran after the deer and the rabbits whenever he felt like it; but he never did learn how to kill for himself. You can’t teach old lions new tricks. He lived on deer mostly, and slept on a sofa in our living room—I wouldn’t have him inside our bedroom, no matter (无论) how often Bertie asked. You know, I have to draw the line somewhere.
Bertie’s leg was never cured (治愈). When it was bad, he often needed a stick, or me, or the lion to lean on. It pained him a lot, especially on cold and wet days, and he never slept well. On Sundays the three of us would walk around the park together, and Bertie would sit on the top of Wood Hill with his arm around the lion’s neck and I would fly kites. You know, I’ve always loved kites. And the lion liked to break them into pieces.
The lion never showed any interest in running away, and even if he’d wanted to, the park wall was too high for an old lion to jump over. Wherever Bertie went, he wanted to go too. And if ever Bertie went out in the car, then he’d sit by me in the kitchen, and watch me with those great amber eyes, listening all the while for the sound of Bertie’s car coming up the path to the front of the house.
The lion was getting older. And he became weak in his legs and could see very little. He spent his last days sleeping at Bertie’s feet. When he died, we buried (埋葬) him at the bottom of the hill. Bertie wanted it that way so he could always see the place from the kitchen window. I advised Bertie to plant a tree in case (以防) he forgot where the lion was. “I will, but he should get more than a tree, ” Bertie said.
Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even comfort him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks by himself. He seemed so shut away inside himself, so distant(遥远的). Try as I did, I could not reach him.
    Adapted(节选) from The Butterfly Lion

(2022春·江苏盐城·八年级校考期中)When I was nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and cried. “Buddy, it’s a beautiful, beautiful poem!” My mother poured out her praise.
“What time will Father be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him my poem. My father had begun his movie career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate(欣赏)my poem even more than my mother. I confidently put the poem right on my father’s plate on the dining table.
My mother said he would be home around 7. But My father got home an hour later than expected. He sat down at the table and noticed his plate. “What is this?” I heard him say.
“Ben, Buddy has written his first poem. And it’s beautiful, so amazing!”Mother said.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide that for myself,” Father said.
I kept my face lowered to my plate. It was only 10 lines long, but it seemed to take hours. “I think it’s bad,” my father said. I couldn’t look up. My eyes were getting wet.
“Ben, sometimes I don’t understand you,” my mother was saying. “This is just a little boy. He needs encouragement.”
“I don’t know why,” my father held his ground. “Isn’t there enough bad poetry (诗歌) in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet.” I ran from the dining room, threw myself on the bed and cried.
A few months later, I read that first poem. It was a bad poem. I worked up the courage to show him a short story. My father thought it was not good but hopeful. I was learning to rewrite.
As I worked my way into other books and plays and films, I realized how lucky I was to have a mother who said, “Buddy, it’s wonderful!” and a father who shook his head “I think it’s bad.” Both are love that forces me to improve. In fact, all of us in life need both loving force.

(2022春·江苏盐城·八年级校考期中)We think of hospitals as being peaceful and safe places. But in the past few years, doctors and nurses in Chinese public hospitals have been aimed by violent(暴力的) attacks. A study that came out in 2018 showed that one in four doctors in China has suffered physical violence, with some even lose lives.
To prevent such things from happening, the government worked out a draft(草案) law and put it up for review on Oct 22nd. It says that, the safety of medical staff is protected by law and that no one is allowed to hurt medical workers, the Beijing News reported.
In most cases, the attackers were relatives of patients who were not satisfied with their treatment. Most people have high expectations for their doctors. But of course, not every illness can be cured, China Youth Daily noted.
A general lack(缺少) of trust in doctors has also made things worse. Giving doctors cash bribes(现金贿赂) for good treatment has long been an unwritten rule. Some people believe that they may have received useless treatment because they didn’t bribe their doctors. In some cases, their anger in this situation turns into violence.
Another problem is a lack of doctors. Doctors in large public hospitals are often stretched thin(不堪重负的), seeing as many as 60 or more patients in just half a day. It’s difficult for them to provide enough care for each patient.
Hospitals are trying to find ways to solve these problems. For example, many hospitals have set up offices to hear and deal with patients’ complaints, Xinhua reported.
When some unexpected things happen, patients should ask the experts or the special organizations for advice instead of turning to violence, the State Council said.

C.Most people must learn basic medical knowledge for their own safety.
D.More offices in hospitals will be set up to deal with patients’ complaints.

One day, while our cab (出租马车) was waiting outside a park, a dirty old cab drove up beside us. The horse was an old chestnut (栗色马). Suddenly she looked at me and said, “Black Beauty, is that you?”
It was Ginger! But how different she was! She was thin, and tired from too much hard work. She looked miserable (悲惨的) and she had a bad cough. She told me her sad story. She had a year’s rest and then a gentleman bought her. For a while she got on very well. Then one day after a long gallop (疾驰) her old problem returned, and her back hurt again. They bought and sold her several times after that.
“Then at last,” she said, “a man who has a lot of cabs and horses bought me. I work hard, all week, with no rest on Sundays. I wish I was dead.”
I was very sad to hear this. I put my nose up to Ginger’s, but I didn’t know what to say to her. She said, “Black Beauty, you are my only friend.”
Just then her driver came back, and they drove off. I felt very sad indeed to see Ginger like this.
A short time after this I saw a cart with a dead horse in it. It was a chestnut horse with a long, thin neck. I think it was Ginger. I hope so, for then all her problems were over.
One day a lady got into the cab. “Jeremiah Barker,” she said, “Is that you? How are Polly and the children?”
I listened to Jerry’s answer and found Mrs. Fowler was a lady Polly once worked for. She asked Jerry.
“How do you find the cab work in winter? I know Polly was worried about you last year.”
“Yes, ma’am, it was a hard winter and I had a bad cough,” he replied.
“Well, Barker,” Mrs Fowler continued, “I know people who want good drivers or grooms. If you stop working on the cabs one day, let me know.”
“Certainly, ma’am,” smiled Jerry. “Thank you,” he said, and he seemed very pleased.

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级校考期中)Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for long.
① But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. ② Instead, it's giving money to others that makes people happy.  ③ It could be buying a homeless person food to eat.  ④ It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money. People feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.
This idea of connecting your happiness to the happiness of others is described as a ubuntu in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa who asked some kids to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat. Surprising, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they had done this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one.

A.Buying new things can make people happy. B.The key to happiness is making others happy.
C.If you want to be happy, you can visit Africa. D.People who have a lot of money might not be happy.

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级校考期中)You might have seen beautiful rainbows(彩虹) in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight can also create(产生) rainbows in the same way. They are called “moonbows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.
Moonbows are rarer than rainbows. Different weather and astronomical (天文学的) conditions have to be just right for moonbows to be created.
The moon has to be very low in the sky—only 42 degrees from the horizon (地平线). The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moonbow to be watched clearly—any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear(出现) in the air in the opposite direction of the moon.
Moonbows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed by the human eye. It is possible, however, to see the colors in a moonbow using long exposure (长时间曝光) photography.
Moonbows more often appear in some places around the world. Most of these places usually have waterfalls, which create thin fog in the air. Some of these places are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky, US; Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and Waimea in Hawaii, US.
Moonbows do really happen. So at a certain time and a certain place, when a moonbow happens to appear, you can’t miss it if you’re right there.

72.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

C.Places to see moonbows. D.History of moonbows.

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级校考期中)After I had been ashore a dozen days, I realized how difficult it became to keep track of the days. So I cut a large post and carved into it with my knife: “I came on shore here on the 30th of Sept. 1659.”
Each day that passed, I cut a notch. For every seventh day, I cut a longer notch. Then at the start of each new month, I cut the longest notch of all. Thus I could keep track of the days, weeks, and months far more easily.
I cried many a tear from loneliness and self-pity. But, it helped that I was busy creating a proper settlement for myself. I needed a place where I could be secure and where I could watch for passing ships.
I soon found a safe place on the side of a hill. I set about building a fence from long stakes. At over five feet tall, this fence would not be easily scaled by wild beats or humans. I made no door to my fence. Instead a rope ladder that could be pulled inside.
I brought all my riches inside the fence. Then, I set about creating a large tent with a smaller tent inside. This kept me secure against the violent rains that fell at certain times of year.
I was a very sorry workman, having never built anything before. But I learned much from the process. I remade the chair several times before I was happy with it.

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级校考期中)Ken and Anthony were childhood friends. They went to primary and high school together. They went to college in different states, and then they lost touch. That was twenty years ago.
One morning Ken was reading the newspaper with his morning coffee. Inside he saw a notice for a poetry reading at a nearby bookstore. He was surprised to find that the poet was none other than his friend Anthony. Ken decided to see what his friend was up to.
Ken sat in the last row of the area set up inside the bookstore. When Anthony was introduced and came up the podium, Ken hardly recognized him. Anthony was almost completely bald and had a little potbelly(大肚皮). When Anthony was in high school, he was very handsome. What Anthony had lost in looks was made up for in talent. Anthony’s poetry was quite good.
Anthony recognized(认出) Ken sitting in the back row. When the reading was over, Ken stood in line with the others waiting for Anthony to sign a copy of his book. When it was Ken’s turn, Anthony stood up and hugged his long lost friend. Anthony invited Ken to stay until he had finished signing books.
