(2022春·江苏南京·八年级校考期中)March 16 is International Sleep Day. And we should all celebrate the act of sleeping. Researchers say sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory and learning. But what about getting rest during the middle of the day?
A recent study on napping(小睡) says short periods of sleep may help our brains work better. Past studies have shown that napping can help babies and young children learn better. And napping can help brain performance in older adults. Taking a nap may also help this group of people fight off memory loss because of the increase in their age.
Many Americans do nap. But one-third of all adults in the United States are also chronically(长期的) tired, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It found that 50 million to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. However, they seem to be unwilling to tell people that they take a nap. They may think that napping shows they are weak or they don’t have enough energy. It is not an uncommon opinion that only children, the very old, sick or lazy people nap. In fact, Americans sometimes do a very strange thing. Some people brag about how few hours of sleep they need each night to show that they are somehow stronger than the average human–superhuman, if you will. However, that may be changing. Many offices now offer napping rooms and napping cafes(咖啡馆) are appearing in many U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.
Remember that an hour long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. It is recommended that 30 minutes is enough to remove the pressure(压力) to sleep and will help people feel more awake. If people nap longer, they will get trapped into deep sleep, which can be hard to get out of. If you have trouble falling asleep at night, limit your daytime nap to under 45 minutes. Also nap before 3 p.m.
4.Who are this group of people in Paragraph 2?
    A.The babies. B.The children.
C.The older adults. D.The young people.
5.The underlined word brag in Paragraph 3 means __________.
    A.chat sadly B.talk proudly
    C.whisper secretly D.speak politely
6.What may Americans think of napping in the future?
    A.Healthy adults needn’t take a nap.
B.They won’t tell others about their nap.
C.It may be common for Americans to take a nap.
D.Only the old, the sick and children need a nap.
7.For a young man with sleep problems, it is good to __________.
    A.take a 40-minute-long noon nap
B.take a nap whenever he feels sleepy
C.take an one-hour-long nap after dinner
    D.take a 30-minute-long nap in the evening

Mr. and Mrs. March lived together with their four daughters. Amy was very shy. Beth loved being at home. Meg looked very pretty. Jo was tall and thin and she was a tomboy. Their home was always busy and full of noise and people. Next to them lived old Mr. Laurence and his grandson, Laurie. They lived in a very large and comfortable house. But it was a house without life.
One day, Joe saw Laurie standing at an upstairs window in his house and looking down at their garden. Jo’s sisters were playing in the snow there. They were throwing snowballs and having a lot of fun. But Laurie’s face was very sad.
“Poor boy!” Jo thought. “He’s all alone. He needs some friends.” She couldn’t stop thinking about him. She wanted to go and see him, but how could she go to the house without an invitation?
Then one snowy afternoon, she saw Laurie’s grandpa go out. This gave her an idea. She took a broom from the kitchen.
“What are you going to do, Jo?” asked her sister Meg.
“To clear the garden path.” answered Jo.
When Laurie saw Jo from the window, a big smile changed his pale, sad face.
Jo laughed and shouted, “How are you? Are you ill?”
Laurie opened the window and said, “I’m better now, thank you. I had a bad cold and had to stay inside for a week”.
“I’m sorry,” said Jo. “Are you bored?”
    “Yes, very.” he replied.
“Don’t your friends come to visit you?”
“No. But I don’t want to see anybody. Boys are noisy and they give me a headache.”
    “Girls are quiet.”
    “I don’t know any girls.”
    “You know us.”
“That’s true! Can you come and visit me?” cried Laurie.
“I’m not quiet, but I’d like to come,” replied Jo. “I must ask Mother first.” She ran back into her house.
A few minutes later, she returned and rang the bell on the door of laurie’s house. A servant took her upstairs.
“Here I am!” she said brightly. “Mother sends her love and my sisters gave me this blancmange(牛奶冻)for you.”
“That looks yummy,” Laurie said. He was very happy to see Jo.
Jo looked around. There were lots of books on the shelves.
“A nice room!” she said. “I can read to you if you like.”
    “No, let’s talk,” replied Laurie.
“All right.” said Jo, “I can talk for hours. My sisters say I never know when to stop.”
“You have three sisters-Amy, Beth and Meg.”Laurie continued.
“How do you know this?” Jo was surprised.
“You call each other’s names when you are in the garden. Sometimes I can see you all around the table with your mother. She has a very kind face. I like looking at her. I haven’t got a mother.” Jo felt sad when she heard this.
“Why don’t you come and visit us?” she said, “It isn’t good for you to stay in this house all the time.”
“Thank you. I’d like to come very much.” said Laurie.
“We know all our neighbours except you.” Jo said, “I’m glad we’ re friends now.”
She told him about all the interesting things in her life. She said, “Besides plays, I also love books.” Laurie loved books too, and offered to show her the library in the house. The library was a wonderful room. Jo loved it.
“Wow!” she said, “All those books!”
Laurie said, “A person needs more than books.”
Just then the bell rang and a servant came in....

You might have seen beautiful rainbows in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight can also create rainbows in the same way. They are called “moonbows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.
Moonbows are rarer than rainbows. Different weather and astronomical (天文学的)conditions have to be just right for moonbows to be created.
The moon has to be very low in the sky-only 42 degrees from the horizon (地平线). The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moonbow to be watched clearly-any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear in the air in the opposite direction of the moon.
Moonbows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed by the human eye. It is possible, however, to view the colors in a moonbow using long exposure (长时间曝光)photography.
Moonbows more often appear in some locations around the world. Most of these locations usually have waterfalls, which create thin fog in the air. Some of these locations are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky, US; Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and Waimea in Hawaii, US.
Moonbows do really happen. So at a certain time and a certain place, when a moonbow happens to appear, you can’t miss it if you’re right there.
12.According to the first two paragraphs, moonbows are ________.
A.created by sunlight B.much easier to find
C.seen during the day D.more difficult to form
13.Which of the following can be the conditions for a moonbow to form?
A.A half moon hangs high in the bright sky.
B.A full moon is 50 degrees from the horizon.
C.A nearly full moon hangs low in the dark sky.
D.Water drops are in the opposite direction of the sun.
14.What does the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A.cover B.drop C.connect D.produce
15.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Conditions of moonbows. B.Background of moonbows.
C.Locations of moonbows. D.Development of moonbows.

We feel angry or guilty (内疚的) about the things we did or did not achieve, about the things we cannot have, and etc. It seems that everyone carries their own bad feelings. Over time, they can be heavy weights on our shoulders.
These bad feelings aren’t good for us at all. So you might ask yourself—is it possible to put down this heavy burden (负担) and give yourself a rest? It is quite possible. Start by actually looking at your feelings. How do they get inside of us? Why do we carry them for so long instead of putting them down? Can we live without them?
By thinking about our bad feelings, we can find healthy ways to deal with them. Unhealthy behaviors are not the way to do this. Instead, there are better ways to deal with them. One of the best ways is forgiveness (原谅).
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. We should forgive ourselves first. We shouldn’t keep bad feelings inside. We must also forgive others who have made us guilty or angry. This is not always easy. But when we learn to forgive ourselves, it becomes easier to forgive others as well. By forgiving ourselves and others, we can put down our burdens and feel better about ourselves. The moment you do this, you will start to feel a lot lighter. You’ll start to feel like you have more energy and you’ll be much happier with your life.
18.What is one way to deal with bad feelings?
A.Keeping bad feelings inside. B.Forgetting the past.
C.Forgiving ourselves and others. D.Finding good feelings.
19.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to become an energetic person.
B.How to deal with bad feelings.
C.Why we should forget about forgiveness.
D.What we should do to forgive our own mistakes.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级校考期中)Sept 17 was Chinese astronaut (宇航员) Liu Boming’s 55th birthday. He said it was his most memorable (值得纪念的) birthday.
That’s the day he returned to Earth. He was on the Shenzhou XII spacecraft (宇宙飞船) from China’s Tiangong space station, along with his workmates Nie Haisheng and Tang Hongbo.
In fact, returning from space is no easy job. Chinese scientists and astronauts made full preparations and made it! Before going back, astronauts first prepared their bodies. They exercised to train their muscles (肌肉), bones and hearts to prepare for coming into the atmosphere (大气层) and hitting the ground, according to Nie.
During the journey, the astronauts went through a blackout period (黑障阶段) after entering the atmosphere. It means they lost radio contact with the ground for minutes. But thanks to the radar, scientists on the ground still knew where the spacecraft was. Their parachutes (降落伞) also helped the spacecraft in its return. When it was about 10 kilometers above the ground, it still traveled at 200 meters per second. That’s twice the speed of high-speed trains!
Shenzhou XII has shown that China is able to do human spaceflight missions (太空飞行任务), including long and difficult operations (操作), wrote Andrew Jones from Space, a news website.
20.What made Liu Boming’s 55th birthday his most memorable one?
A.He met his new workmates. B.He started working at a space station.
C.He returned home from space. D.He got a great gift from his children.
21.What happens during a blackout period?
A.Radars on the ground don’t work. B.Astronauts can’t see anything outside the spacecraft.
C.Scientists don’t know where the craft is. D.The craft’s radio does not work.
22.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The parachutes are packed in two suitcases.
B.Astronauts’ muscles and bones are different.
C.The closer the spacecraft gets to the ground, the faster it will fall.
D.Shenzhou XII shows China’s success in spaceflight missions.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级校考期中)It was about 10 years ago, on a cold winter day. The rain made my clothes wet and face old. I was walking to visit my dad. I knocked on his door and walked into his house. Warm steam (蒸汽) came from the kitchen. It touched my nose and suddenly I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Nana’s special sauce.
Growing up, Nana would make us an Italian meal every Sunday after church. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce (意面酱) for hours, throwing in oil, salt, sugar, pepper (胡椒) and garlic (大蒜). Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meatballs and sometimes even steak. When it was ready, we would mix it in the spaghetti, put it on plates, and sprinkle (撒上) cheese on top. It always left our stomachs full, our hearts happy and our house smelling yummy.
I sat down when Dad made me a plate of spaghetti. We talked about those old times and laughed over the good and bad memories. And I noticed something too. I didn’t feel cold anymore. My heart was warm and light.
Dad and Nana have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every day. My daughter and I both know how to make Nana’s special sauce, but we don’t cook it as often as we should. I tried hard, but can never get it quite right. Maybe I am missing an ingredient (配料). Or maybe, it was the love they cooked with that made it so delicious. This winter, I am going to make it again. I need its warmth. I need its goodness.
23.What brought the author back to his childhood?
A.A cold winter day. B.His wet clothes and cold face.

A.Why the author liked going to church. B.What Nana used to make the sauce.
C.How the author felt after eating the meal. D.How the author ate the sauce.
25.According to the author, what made the sauce taste better?
A.The ingredients. B.The person he cooked it with.
C.The care and love put into it. D.The time of year.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级校考期中)From a young age, I’ve had a really deep connection with being outside. I’ve been skiing (滑雪) since I was eight or nine years old. I’ve been on expeditions (探险) in many places like China, Pakistan and so on. But it was in my home country, the USA, that I came closest to death(死亡).
It was April, 2011. I was skiing in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier, both experienced snowboarders. That day, I was the last person to ski. They were watching me from a safe area. Suddenly, I heard someone cry loudly. I turned around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me. It was a massive avalanche (大雪崩) — the kind of avalanche that destroys(毁坏) trees, cars, buses and even houses! Tens of thousands of tons of snow was coming straight down the mountain behind me. I felt the snow push me forward, hundreds of metres, and then cover me. It was so heavy that I couldn’t breathe(呼吸). And then it pushed me forward again and up, out of the snowpack. I looked around, and for a few seconds I actually stopped being worried. I had a moment to stop and to look at the power of the avalanche.
I looked down into the bottom of the valley (峡谷). I could see trees that were 30m tall. Because I was so far away, they looked tiny to me. “OK, I’m going all the way to the bottom!” I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountain another 450m. I thought the force of the snow would destroy me because it was powerful. But in the end, I felt the avalanche slow down and I just popped (进出) right out of the snow at the bottom of the valley.
It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to reach me. There was a pile of debris (碎片) across the bottom of the mountain 300m wide. They couldn’t believe it when they saw me. I was so lucky.
Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? I don’t know, maybe. But I do know that it’s important to live your life with meaning. Life is a gift, so use it wisely.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级校考期中)A group of 30 young people in a software company was a team who were willing to learn. The team leader decided to teach them about finding real solutions (解决办法) to the problems.
The team was called to play a game in a hall. They were quite surprised. As they entered the hall, they found the hall decorated with colourful papers and balloons all over the place. It was more like a kid's play area, than a meeting hall. Also, there was a huge box of balloons placed in the hall.
The team leader asked everyone to pick a balloon from the box and asked them to blow it. Every one happily picked a balloon and blew it.
Then the team leader asked them to write their names on their balloon carefully so that the balloons didn't blow up. All tried to write their names on the balloons, but not everyone was successful. A few balloons blew up because of pressure (压力) and they were given another chance to use another balloon.
Those who failed to mark their names even after the second chance were ruled out of the game. After the second chance, 25 were left to move on to the next level. All the balloons were collected and then put into a room.
The team leader announced the members to go to the room and pick the same balloon that had his name on it. Also, he told them that no balloon should blow up and warned them to be very careful!
All 25 members reached the room, where the balloons carrying their names were thrown here and there. They were searching for the balloons carrying their names. While they were in a rush to find the balloons, they tried not to burst them. It was almost 15 minutes and no one was able to find the balloon carrying his own name.
The team was told that the second level of the game was over.

(2022春·江苏苏州·八年级校联考期中)Most of us believe that our parents will always be there for us. But this is not the case for “left-behind” children (留守儿童). Their parents work in cities, leaving them behind in the countryside to be cared for by their grandparents.
As of August, China had 6.97 million left-behind children, accounting for about one-third of all rural (农村的) children. With Spring Festival arriving, Ministry of Civil Affairs is calling on migrant (外出打工的民工) parents to return home and celebrate the new year with their kids.
In fact, children living without their parents can face many problems in terms of their education, safety and mental (心理的) health. For example, their grandparents may not be able to help them with their homework or raise them properly. This can result in children having an unsociable (孤僻的) personality, according to Workers’ Daily.
The government has taken some action to care for and protect left-behind children, such as sending social workers to rural areas. They will report to the government if they find that any left-behind children are suffering from abuse (虐待), China Daily noted.
But the best way is to bring their parents back. The government has encouraged migrant workers to return to their rural hometowns to look for work. Another solution is to make it easier for rural children to attend urban schools in the cities, People’s Daily noted.
Some of the government’s efforts have paid off. The number of left-behind children has dropped by 22.7 percent from 9.02 million last year, according to Xinhua.

Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Huw Thomas fell in love with Megan. But then an accident changed his life, and he had to move to Canada. Megan promised to write to him. But Huw never heard from her…until one day a letter arrived.
He saw the letter came from where he and his father had lived in their early years. Who was writing to him? He turned the envelope(信封)over in his hands several times. Then he took out the letter and read:
    Dear Huw,
I don't know if this letter will reach you, and I don't really know why I'm writing to you after all these years, but…
Huw turned to the end of the letter and saw:
    Best wishes

He couldn't believe it. He turned back to the first words of the letter and read:
…after all these years, but I've just found your letters to me from Canada. Believe me, this was the first time I'd read them and they made me cry, even after 50 years I found them in a box of my father's papers. They were never opened.
Huw, I never knew that you'd written to me. I thought your new life in Canada had made you forget me.
Now I realize(明白)that my father kept your letters. I can still remember asking him if there was any letter for me, and he always said “_____________, my girl. I told you he was no good.” Finally, after about a year, I believed him.
But why did he keep the letters? Do you think he wanted me to find them when it was too late? Anyway, he's dead now, so I can't ask him. All I can say is I'm sorry. Sorry for what my father did, sorry that you never heard from me and sorry for…everything.
I hope that at least this letter reaches you. Of course, I'll understand if you don't want to write back to me, but if you do. I am still Megan Jenkins, and I still live at the same address.
    Best wishes,
    Megan
Huw read the letter again. Everything with Megan came back to him. He had never forgotten her. He couldn't. Every day he looked at her face on the wall. He had a drawing of her. (2022春·江苏南京·八年级校考期中)(2017﹒江苏南京)Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7, 000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.
Are there National Parks in England?
There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.
Are National Parks in England the same as those in other countries?
Many National Parks around the world cover huge areas of land where nobody lives, but in England most of the countryside within them is useful for farming and other activities. As a result, National Parks in England include places where people live and work, as well as wild and beautiful areas where there is little sign or human life.
Why do visitors go to the National Parks?
There are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in England. Visitors can walk or cycle, following marked route, and many of the parks organize activities for families.
Are there any problems in the National Parks?
There are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped(充斥) by visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads choked (堵塞) with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops; in popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.
Another major problem is litter. In the parks it is a particular(特别的) danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage (毁坏) large areas very quickly.
    How can people help?
All National Parks in England promote(倡导) the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be protected and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time.

When Major League Baseball (美国职业棒球大联盟) starts this month, its fans are going to look quite different and they won’t be that loud and noisy.
That’s because its teams will fill their stands with cardboard of fans. The trend, which we first saw in European soccer leagues has now made its way to the United States.
When MLB returns after the COVID - 19, fans will not be allowed to watch in the stands. That has made teams look for creative ways to attract more eyes.
One of the teams started this project on Monday. The project allows fans to put their pictures on an 18*30 cardboard and they will have the chance to see their cardboard appear on television. In 24 hours, they said they had already sold 1,000 “season tickets” for the cardboard.
The most exciting thing is that if someone’s board gets hit, the team will send the ball to his house. The price of the board is different, but in Oakland, prices start at $49 and go up to $129, depending on the place in the stands.
These boards will be kept in the stands for the whole season and fans will be able to take their boards home as a souvenir when the season ends.
100.Why will the fans be quiet in the stands this year?
    _______________________________________________________
101.How do fans feel about the project of using cardboard in the stands?

As we can see above, using mobile phones may cause accidents and even cost a lot of money. Also, more and more strange facts happen to the “Heads down Tribe”. We can often see people in the restaurant eating face to face but looking at their own mobile phones. It’s strange that they don’t talk to the ones who sit opposite to them during the meal.
