(2022春·江苏无锡·八年级校联考期中)Many parts of China had heavy rains and serious floods this year. It made us think back to the time in 1998 when the worst floods happened.
Hubei got better after the fight against COVID-19. Just weeks after that, Hubei tried its best to face up to the heavy floods. Many other places had the same problem. For example, the flood problem in Hubei’s neighbouring provinces of Jiangxi and Anhui was also serious. Quite a lot of people came to the Yangtze River area to help build dikes (堤坝) to fight the floods.
The worrying fact is that heavy rains and floods are becoming so common (常见的) , not only in Asia but also in other parts of the world. Heavy rains and floods aren’t the only serious natural disasters. Cyclones, serious droughts (干旱) , and quickly melting ice cover in the Arctic and Antarctic are all very common now.
This madness of nature is called climate (气候) change. China is one of the first countries to get to know the bad results of climate change. It is doing a lot of things to fight it, such as cutting pollution and creating a greener environment. However, one country’s power (力量) is limited. It needs the whole world to work together.

(2022春·江苏无锡·八年级校联考期中)As I enjoyed the soft sunshine in the pool, my 8-year-old daughter swam up behind me.
“Guess who, Mommy?” she said.
“No idea. Who is this mystery (神秘的) person?” I joked.
The pair of us talked and laughed together for the rest of the afternoon.
“Remember this,” I told myself. “You are happy, right here, right now.”
Fast forward a few months, and my thoughts sounded different.
“Just keep going,” I would think, or, “How many sleeps until the weekend?”
I didn’t like what I was like—someone sleepwalking (梦游) through the week, running on coffee and too tired at night to do anything but watch TV. I thought the Christmas break would recognize (使再次充满活力) me, making me ready to take on another year of early starts. But I had to listen to my heart.
My patient husband and friends had listened to me going over the decision for six months, but the time for talking was over. It was time to make my choice: My daughter needed me and I needed her.
When she was really young, I loved the freedom of going to work as the sun was rising, happy that my family was still sound asleep. Then later, my daughter would set her alarm (闹钟) so she could wake up early with me to chat in the dark together.
The morning I planned to tell everyone I was quitting (放弃) my job, we sat together on the couch. I told her how nervous I was about sharing my news in a few hours’ time. Stroking (抚摸) her hair, I asked my daughter what she thought about my decision. “We’ll be so much happier, Mommy,” she said.
Life is never simply a choice between job and family. Ask anyone, and family always comes first.
Besides, I’m not disappearing—there are plenty of projects to keep me fulfilled.

We had to wash dishes, make our beds and learn to cook. I believe she lay awake at night thinking up unkind things for us to do.
Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did in order to miss school.
My mother was the unkindest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated(受教育) and honest people. I am trying to raise my three children like this. I will feel proud when my children call me unkind. Because you see, I am thankful that I had the unkindest mother in the whole world.

(2022春·江苏南通·八年级南通市海门区东洲中学校考期中)Rubbish sorting (分类) probably doesn’t sound like much fun. But there is a new mobile game that may change your opinion about it, and you might even learn something while you play it—Meet Sortee.
Meet Sortee is a puzzle game developed by Flow Studio, a UK company. It makes you think deeply about everyday objects (物体) and their meanings.
The rule of the game is quite simple. Two bins are placed on either side of the screen. Each of the bins has a label (标签) next to it and the label explains what it is for. When an object, such as a car or an apple, appears on the screen, you need to decide which bin it should be sorted into and then send it there by moving your finger.
The game seems easy enough at first. But as you move on to more levels, it gets harder. The number of bins increases (增长) to three or four and the time given gets shorter. You need to think and move faster. That can be really difficult.
There are 400 objects in total and more than 100 bins in the game. The more objects you correctly sort, the more game coins you can get. It’s a bit like working in a rubbish recycling (回收利用) center, but it has no bad smell.
You can download the free game from Apple’s app store (苹果软件下载中心), but it only lets you play the first few levels. If you want to open the next 40 levels, you need to pay 6 yuan for the full game.

(2022春·江苏徐州·八年级统考期中)I was on a train in Switzerland. The train came to a stop and the voice over the loudspeaker announced (广播) message in German, Italian, and French. Unluckily, I failed to understand anything about it. I’d made the mistake of not learning any of those languages before my vacation. So, I just sat there doing nothing but waiting to know what was going on.
However, everyone started getting off the train. Then an old woman saw that I was confused. She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the railways. She asked me where I was trying to get. Then she went and talked to some workers and returned to tell me that we had to change trains three or four times to get there.
I was glad when I heard she was going the same way as me. To be honest, it would be never possible for me to figure it out (解决) without her help. We went together from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way. She told me a lot of things about Switzerland proudly. A wild smile was always on her face.
It was a three-hour journey in total, and when we made it to the final destination ( 目的地), we got off and said our goodbye. I had made it just in time to catch my train to Rome. She told me she had a train to catch as well. I asked her how much farther she had to go and it turned out that her home was two hours back the other way.
She was really the sweetest woman. She had jumped from train to train and traveled the whole way just to make sure that I made it. I was shocked. A woman spent her whole day sitting on trains and taking her hours away from her home just to help out a confused tourist visiting her country.
This experience is unforgettable. Though I have visited many countries, I’ll always say the most beautiful country is Switzerland.

Mom called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.”

China will cut the number of climbers trying to climb Mount Qomolangma from the north this year as part of plans for the clean-up on the world’s highest mountain. The clean-up activity will include moving away the bodies of climbers who died at more than 8, 000 metres up the mountain.
The total number of climbers trying to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain from the north will be controlled to less than 300. The climbing season will be controlled to spring.
Parts of Qomolangma are in China and Nepal. Each year, around 60, 000 climbers and guides visit the Chinese north side of the mountain, but few actually try to climb it. China has set up stations to sort, recycle and break down rubbish from the mountain, which includes cans, plastic bags, tents and oxygen tanks.
On the Nepalese side, mountaineering trip organizers have begun sending huge rubbish bags to climbers during the spring climbing season. They should collect rubbish that then can be carried by helicopters back to the base camp.
Every year there are many victims on Qomolangma often in the “death area” above 8, 000 metres where the air is the thinnest. In 2017, 648 people reached the top of Qomolangma. Six people have died on the mountain that year, one of them on the north side.

(2022春·江苏常州·八年级统考期中)Chinese are very generous(慷慨的,大方的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course ( 额外的课程 ) activities where they will either learn music or dance, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children’s skills are different, maybe good in some areas ,but poor in others. Most parents fail to realize that today’s children are in need of self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious (好奇的) and have interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
81.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Parents care about their money. when educating their children.
B.Parents don’t often send their children to the best schools.
C.Parents seldom want their children to take extra-course activities.
D.Parents spend much money on the education without thinking.

A.the cheaper an education is, the better it is
B.children today should learn different skills
C.practical skills are helpful to children’s growth
D.school education can’t meet parents’ expectations

Things such as mobile phones and computers were not yet invented (被发明). It took longer for people to get news about each other. Today’s technology makes it easier and faster to stay close to people.

To improve your reading, you can try the form of readers’ theatre, a formatted script for readers to read aloud. It’s so interesting!
Cast of Characters: Narrator, Kayla, Ms. Lee, Zack
Narrator: On a sunny day in southern Texas, Ms. Lee’s students gathered in the school playground.
Ms. Lee: Tomorrow is the day of the sidewalk(人行道)chalk-art festival. The principal has allowed us to practise our wet-chalk drawing on the playground sidewalk, which will be our studio. Remember, whenever you want to draw on a sidewalk, always ask an adult in charge for permission before you draw. Now let’s review the steps of wet-chalk drawing. What do we do first?
Narrator: As the students told her the steps in order, Ms. Lee wrote them on a large pad of paper. When she finished writing, she pulled the paper off the pad and displayed the directions so everyone could read them. Then the students chose and soaked (浸湿)their pieces of chalk. Meanwhile, Kayla and Zack planned their drawing.
Kayla: Let’s draw a jungle feast. Parrots can be eating all kinds of fruit.
Zack: I’ll draw a model train carrying food to the birds.
Narrator: The students removed their pieces of chalk from the water and drew. As Zack drew a sweeping curve of train track, his hand knocked over the jar of water. He and Kayla watched water streak across their drawing.
Zack: Our drawing is ruined(毁坏)!
Kayla: Don’t be so worried! Quick, mix the water and the chalk together! Now let’s use more chalk and smear(涂抹)it around.
Narrator: Kayla and Zack worked quickly. The smeared colours looked glorious, like rich, thick frosting on a cake.
Ms. Lee: That looks great! That’s a special method you’re using, kids. Are you two interested in taking part in the chalk-art festival tomorrow? The timetable for the festival says that drawing starts at 9:00 a.m.

(2022春·江苏无锡·八年级江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考期中)Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted (闹鬼的) houses.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fear.
“Keep quiet! There’s someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.
Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said.
“It’s time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery?”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”

Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files, pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on. Others think the brain to be a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.
The brain is not a computer disk. And it isn’t a cupboard. Look at the picture here. It looks a bit like weeds (杂草) in a garden, doesn’t it? The picture actually shows a child’s neocortex—a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds” grow as the child gets older. Scientists call these neuronal (神经元的) networks. The networks grow around our neurons.
What makes them grow? Learning! “Learning is brain change,” says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.“Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes.”
The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says yes, there is. He says that brain change is strongest when you are interested in and like what you are learning, you are in control of what you learn and you get challenging tasks that make you think hard. Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.
109.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.The brain—a fantastic computer. B.What people believe about the brain.
C.How to make your brain stronger. D.Our brain—a growing system.
110.Which of the following things cannot make our brain grow better?
A.Learning new words in your favorite English class.
B.Being the first to work out a math problem.
C.Singing old songs when you are feeling bad.
D.Drawing a mind map after reading a new story.
111.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Interest is the best teacher B.Go to meet life’s challenges
C.Never too late to learn D.Learning really makes people clever

Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom—Disneyland. And one thing made our visit seem truly magical. We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn’t take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工)members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, “Really?” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with “her” ice-cream.
Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride. She went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out of the exit. Gloria said, “Thank you,” but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond! Thanks so much for giving us help and make our visit pleasant!
