(2023·江苏无锡·校考一模)A team of US psychologist (心理学家) have found that talking to another person for ten minutes a day helps with memory.
“Socializing is just as useful as more traditional kinds of mental(脑力的) exercises in boosting memory and intellectual performance,” Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, said in a statement.
In one investigation (调查), they analyzed data on 3610 people, aged 24 to 96.
They find that the higher their level of social interaction (交流), the better their cognitive(认知的) functioning. Social interaction includes getting together or having phone chats with relatives, friends and neighbors. In another experiment, the researchers conducted laboratory tests on 76 college students, aged 18 to 21, to evaluate (评估) how social interactions and mental exercises influenced the results of memory and intellectual performance tests.
The students were divided into three groups: the social interaction group had a discussion of a social issue for 10 minutes before taking the tests; the mental activities group completed three tasks (including a reading comprehension exercise and a crossword puzzle) before the tests; and a control group watched a 10-minute film of the Seinfeld television show.
“We found that short-term social interaction lasting for just 10 minutes improved the students’ intellectual performance as much as working on so-called ‘mental’ activities for the same amount of time,” Ybarra said.
The study was expected to be published in the February issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

(2023·江苏无锡·校考一模)“Quickly, Dorothy,” she shouted. “Go to the cellar (地窖).”
Aunt Em ran to the door of the cellar and opened it. Dorothy picked up Toto and ran to the cellar door. Before she could climb down the ladder into the cellar, a great cyclone (龙卷风) picked up the house. It turned it round and round and round and then carried it high into the sky.
It was not very dark. Dorothy felt as if she were riding through the sky. She held on to Toto and climbed under her bed, where she stayed for several hours. Then, although the house was still moving, she fell asleep.
When she woke up, she did not know how much later, the house was on the ground. It was in a field full of flowers, and there were hundreds of beautifully colored birds flying about and singing. Not far away, there was a stream with clear, fresh water.
Dorothy was still under her bed. She got up and left the house. She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking toward her. They were very strangely dressed. The men’s clothes were white and had little stars all over them.
When they saw Dorothy, they walked up to her and bowed (鞠躬).
“Welcome to the land of the Munchkins,” one of the little men said. “We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Now our people are free.”
“I’m afraid you are making a mistake,” Dorothy said. “I didn’t kill any witch.”
“Your house did,” one of the little men said. “Look!”
He pointed to the house. Dorothy saw two feet sticking out from under it.
“Oh!” Dorothy shouted. “The house fell on her. What can I do?”
“There is nothing to do,” the little woman said. “The Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and the
    Munchkins are thankful to you.”
“Are you a Munchkin?” Dorothy asked.
“No, but I am their friend,” the little woman said. “I am the Witch of the North.?”

(2023·江苏无锡·校考一模)In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?
Civilizations (文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines help us to get most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
Researchers have realized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases (偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective (客观的), but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the ease (容易) of getting information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief—the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence (智慧), we can easily get to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our health depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we slowly but unquestionably become strangers to future people.
10.Smart machines are likely to increase our biases because ________.
A.they go off course in testing and scoring B.we control the training process on them
C.we offer them too much information D.they overuse the provided answers
11.The ease of getting information from the Internet ________.
A.frees us from making efforts to learn new skills B.prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C.misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge D.separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
12.According to this passage, the following are true except ________.
A.Most young scientists replied to Science that students should have more creative activities. B.Nowadays, with smart machines, people no longer need to remember most things.
C.The use of smart machines causes some problems to people. D.It is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
13.The writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to ________.
A.question about the standards of information storage B.discuss our problems of communication with machines
C.stress the importance of improving our remembering ability D.remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember

(2022·江苏淮安·校考一模)During the Tang dynasty(618-907), Emperor Taizong asked the prime minister(宰相) Feng Deyi to recommend talented people. Several months passed, but Feng didn’t recommend anyone.
“I tried my best, but there are not talented people at all,” Feng said.
“People are like tools. What we need to do is to make good use of their strengths. You should blame(责怪) yourself for not noticing talented people. How could you say that there are no talented people in our time?” said the emperor.
In fact, each tool has a specific function(特有的功能). A knife is made to cut things while chopsticks are made to pick up food. We can’t use a knife as a chopstick. Like a tool, each person has a specific strength. Nobody is perfect. We can’t expect a person to be good at everything.
With this idea in mind, Emperor Taizong discovered many talented people of different backgrounds. He offered them important positions, which helped them make the most of their talents. His talented people helped the society develop and created a “golden age”.

(2022·江苏无锡·校考一模)I walked into a restaurant and ordered some food. After about 20 minutes, a large group of people came in and placed their own orders.
To my disappointment, the group got served before me. I watched as they began to eat and laugh heartily. I heard one of them bragging (吹嘘) about how he’d connected to someone who worked at the restaurant. Unable to stand it anymore, I decided to leave. I called the waiter over to cancel my order.
He calmly told me, “Yours is a special order being prepared by the head chef himself. It’ll take a little more time. Please have a drink while you wait.”
I calmed down and waited patiently. Shortly after, my meal was served by six waiters.
To my surprise, the owner of the restaurant turned out to be a long-lost friend of mine. He had seen me as I walked in and decided to surprise me. He upgraded (升级) my simple meal to a five- star meal for free. The people at the other table were shocked and couldn’t stop staring. Suddenly they started murmuring (低声抱怨 ), asking why they didn’t get that kind of service.

(2022·江苏无锡·校考一模)Why not write in a foreign language? If people feel free to choose their profession, their religion, and even their sex, why not just decide which language you want to write? Ever since Jhumpa published In Other Words in Italian, people have been asking me, “Why don’t you write in Italian, Tim? After all, you’ve been in the country 35 years. What keeps you tied to English?” Is it just a question of economic(经济的) convenience?
Certainly economics can be important. It was the factor that pushed Conrad to abandon his Polish mother tongue. If it is not possible to publish at home, or to publish there as one would wish to publish, then one is likely to go elsewhere. And if to publish elsewhere one has to change language, then some authors are willing to take that step.
Something of the same logic has driven many writers from Africa, Asia to write in French and English in recent years. There is also the fact that people in Europe and the West are interested in the countries they grew up in. Just as in the nineteenth century, novelists like Thomas Hardy could “sell” their familiarity with peasant life to a middle-class metropolitan(大都市的) public, so these writers have interested us with stories that might seem common in their home countries.
There is also a real internationalism in the decision to change language. If you have “a message” and if English is the language that offers maximum spread, then it would seem appropriate to use it.
All these make sense. Critics(评论家) tend to pay attention only to those who have made a success of writing in a new language. In April 2014, a New York Times article essentially listed young literary stars who had switched(改变)to writing in the main Western languages. At this point, the native English speaker almost begins to feel at a disadvantage for having been born into the dominant culture. Should we perhaps head for Paris, like Beckett or Jonathan Littell, just to be between two worlds? Or look for something more exotic(异国的) and have ourselves translated back into English afterward? However, one fact is that changing languages doesn’t always work.
I did write a novel in Italian. But after rereading it, I decided against it. My work lost power with the switch of language. My real subject matter still had to do with England and it was to my home culture that my books were addressed. The second language never seems to mean quite as much as the first. In any event, after my early experiment, I never went back to write in Italian. Changing language is not the only way to bring energy to your writing.
38.The author writes the first paragraph to ________.
A.introduce the topic of this passage B.provide background information
C.stress the importance of English D.explain why he writes in English
39.Why are some writers willing to write in a foreign language?
A.They have published a lot of works at home.
B.Their works are uncommon in their own countries.
C.A new language may offer a wider readership.
D.They want to be accepted by middle class.
40.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Native English writers are at a disadvantage for writing in English.
B.Writers can’t be entirely separated from their own culture and language.
C.Writers should write in a foreign language to draw critics’ attention.
D.Any writer can succeed with the switch of a new language.
41.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

“A drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day/The mourner’s heart is going to break on his way”, it is from a poem about Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as the Qingming Festival. It falls on the 4th or 5th of April each year. It’s the traditional Chinese festival to remember the dead. Chinese people all come home to visit the tombs (墓) of their parents, grandparents and ancestors (祖先). They will sweep the tombs and clean away the grass around them. Then they burn paper money and put flowers and fruit in front of the tombs. They hope the dead can enjoy them and bring the family good luck.
However, not only Chinese remember the dead. People in other countries also have festivals for the dead.
In Japan, O-Bon Festival (盂兰盆节) is one of the most important festivals. It is held from August 13 to 16. It is also a holiday that serves as a family reunion(相聚). During O-Bon, Japanese people return to their hometown and visit their ancestors’ spirits return home to be reunited with their family. People perform a “bon odori” dance (盆舞) to welcome the spirits. On the last day of O-Bon, they put paper lanterns in a river to send off the spirits.
In Russia, people remember their ancestors on the Day of Rejoicing (欣喜). It’s usually in late April or early May. The name of this festival means birth and happiness. Russians believe that people shouldn’t feel sad for the dead because death means birth in another world. On the Day of Rejoicing, Russian people draw beautiful pictures on eggs and put them in front of tombs. After that they have a picnic together. They hope for a good life for both the living and the dead.

(2022·江苏盐城·校考一模)We feel angry or guilty about the things we did or did not achieve, about the things we can not have, and many other things. It seems that everyone carries their own bad emotions(情绪). But neither guilt nor anger can help us. Over time, they can be heavy weights on our shoulders.
These bad emotions don’ t do anything good for us at all. So you might ask yourself — is it possible to put down this heavy burden (负担) and give yourself a break? It is quite possible. Start by actually looking at your feelings. How do they get inside of us? Why do we carry them for so long instead of putting them down? Can we live without them?
By thinking about our bad emotions, we can find healthy ways to deal with them. Unhealthy behaviors are not the way to do this. They provide no relief. Instead, there are better ways to handle them. One of the best ways is forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. We should forgive ourselves first. We shouldn’ t keep bad emotions inside. We must also forgive others who have made us guilty or angry. This is not always easy. But when we learn to forgive ourselves, it becomes easier to forgive others as well.
There is nothing good about carrying years of emotional burdens. By forgiving ourselves and others, we can abandon our burdens and feel better about ourselves. The moment you do this, you will start to feel a lot lighter. Years of heaviness will be magically lifted! You’ ll start to feel like you have more energy and you’ ll be much happier with your life.
48.What is the first step to removing the burden of bad emotions?
A.Asking others some questions. B.Studying your emotions.
C.Trying to live without them. D.Finding ways to deal with them.
49.What is one way to deal with bad emotions?

51.What is the story mainly about?
A.How to become an energetic person. B.How to deal with bad emotions.
C.Why we should forget about forgiveness. D.What we should do to forgive our own mistakes.

The six-month stay for Chinese astronauts in the Tiangong space station will end soon. They face one last test-returning home safely. What needs to be done before they leave the station.
To go home after a long journey, you have to pack up. Besides their personal belongings (物品), astronauts also need to bring home experimental data and samples (样品) for further research on Earth.
The three astronauts also need to clean “the house”. They must collect leftover food and santiary (卫生) waste and waste from experiments. The waste is put into the orbital module (轨道舱), which burns up as it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere (大气层).
The astronauts must also put equipment back in place. It will be more than a month before the Shenzhou XIV astronauts enter Tiangong. They need to make sure that things like gym equipment are fixed to the walls for safety.
Astronauts experience microgravity (微重力) for long periods of time. This affects their bodies. They lose fluids (体液), their muscles atrophy (萎缩) and they lose bone strength. To ensure a safe return, they three astronauts do exercises to keep themselves strong.
Tiangong space station will be completed before the end of this year. Six astronauts will be sent there for the Shenzhou XIV and XV missions. The Shenzhou XV crew (全体成员) will fly to the station around the year’s end to meet their Shenzhou XIV colleagues (同事).

The fingerprint unlock is my favorite. Compared with numeric passwords, it can help me unlock my phone more quickly. I think the pattern unlock is not safe. When you’re unlocking your phone, other people might see the pattern and memorize (记住) it. Furthermore, it’s too easy for thieves to break the code.
    Student B
My favorite is the fingerprint unlock. Everyone’s fingerprint is unique. So I think that’s safer. Some people like to use numbers as their passwords. They often use special numbers, such as birthdates and telephone numbers. I think this is extremely unsafe.
    Student C
I think using fingerprints to unlock smartphones is the least secure (可靠的) because fingerprints can be copied using some kinds of technology. I prefer the face unlock. Other people cannot unlock your phone unless you allow them to.
    Student D
I prefer the fingerprint unlock, as no two fingerprints in the world are the same. I think the least secure method is the pattern unlock because too many people use patterns shaped like “Z”, “L”, or “W”, which are easy to figure out. In the future, I guess there might be a voice unlock. I’ve heard that everyone has a unique voice. When you speak, your phone will recognize your voice and unlock itself.
69.Which of the following is pattern unlock?
    A. B. C. D.
70.How many students prefer the fingerprint unlock?
    A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
71.Why does student D think the voice unlock is safe?
    A.Because everyone’s voice is unique.
    B.Because it frees people’s hands.
C.Because people can easily change their voices.
D.Because you don’t need to worry about forgetting your password.

(2022·江苏南通·南通市新桥中学校考一模)Whenever I’m invited to somebody’s house for the first time, I’ll take a close look at their bookshelves. What they keep on their shelves, in my eyes, is a reflection(反映) of their personal tastes and interests. The books on a bookshelf tell the story of a life.
My own shelves are a kind of road map through my life, telling a chronological tale. First up come my favorite childhood reads, like Water ship Down and His Dark Materials. The collection then moves on to teenage things I read in school—Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Handmaid’s Tale and A Clockwork Orange. Finally, we come out of full-time education and enter the real world, and this part is a reflection of my professional(职业的) life, from the first exciting days of work experience to the present.
If you pointed to any book on my shelves, I could name the year I got it, where I was working, and probably where I was living at the time.

It’s such a personal thing, different from each other. Some want to be with their books in every room, others have them on shelves, behind glass or simply lining their floors. Each home has a story to tell through the way they live with their books.
It’s often said that what we read says something about who we are. The way we fill our bookshelves might also send a message about ourselves. From the pile of books on your bedside table to your well-organized shelves, whether we notice it or not, our book collections are telling a story before a single page has been turned.

The sun shows its face every day, but an amazing new telescope is showing a whole different view of it. And guess what? Our familiar friend in the sky has some impressive features! Seen from the earth without a fancy telescope, the sun looks like a big sugar cookie shining in the sky. However, in detailed photos and videos got by the new telescope, the sun’s surface looks lumpy and bumpy.
These amazing images are taken by the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), the most powerful solar telescope in the world. As a project of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the telescope is named after a U.S. politician who represented the state of Hawaii, which is home to the high-tech, high-resolution wonder.
The DKIST is at the top of Haleakalā on the island of Maui, which is…a volcano! While that might sound like a risky place for a $344-million telescope. What’s more, the combination of high elevation, low air disturbance, and deep blue skies make it an ideal location to study the sun. Modern astronomers aren’t the first to recognize that Haleakalā has a special connection to the sun—ancient Hawaiians were far earlier than them. The top of Haleakalā is admired by native Hawaiians, who gave the place its name “House of the Sun.”
Now, after ten years’ construction, the DKIST is sunbathing in this high spot. When the telescope’s first videos and photos were posted, they attracted wild media attention like a superstar, but the NSF has much bigger goals. The astronomers want to study the surface of the sun to better predict solar weather.
Why would people want a weather forecast for a place that’s over 145 million kilometers away? Because events on the surface of the sun can end up affecting us right here at home. Solar weather can disable satellite systems and GPS tracking systems and even cause blackouts, in which large areas temporarily lose electricity. In 2017, solar flares disabled radio communications as three hurricanes were attacking the Caribbean. As you can imagine, that was a terrible shock to emergency response capability.
By studying the images the DKIST captures, scientists hope to learn how to predict solar weather in time for people to plan in advance and prevent disasters. Meanwhile, we can all enjoy getting an eye-opening new view of the sun!
76.Which of the following is TRUE according to the first three paragraphs?
A.The sun looks like a big sugar cookie in the DKIST’s image.
B.The telescope is named after a famous U.S. astronomer.
    C. The top of Haleakalā is an ideal place for the solar research.
    D. Modern astronomers named the top of Haleakalā “House of the Sun.”
77.The underlined word “blackouts” in Paragraph 5 means temporary losses of ________.
    A.sight B.memory C.electric power D.GPS system
78.The NSF’s purpose of building the DKIST is to ________.
A.take amazing pictures and videos of the sun
B.attract more public attention of the sun
C.show the rapid progress of the solar research
D.better predict solar weather and prevent disasters
79.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.New View of the Sun B.A Prediction of the Solar Research
C.Weather Forecast for the Sun D.The Best Location for Solar Research

(2022·江苏南通·南通市新桥中学校考一模)US poet Allen Ginsberg once said, "Poetry is the one place where people can speak their original human mind."
In celebrating World Poetry Day, March 21, UNESCO discovers the special ability of poetry to express the human spirit.
The magic of poetry lies in the connection built up through words between the author and the reader. When we read a poem, we often imagine what the poet was thinking when they wrote it, or what they were doing at the time. These thoughts let us connect with the words better.
But in the age of AI(人工智能), would a poem still mean as much if it wasn't written by a human at all? Today, computers can create all kinds of texts, even poems included.
In 2013, Australian researcher Oscar Schwartz and his friend Benjamin Laird created a website called "bot or not", where readers can read poems and guess whether they were written by a human or a computer. During a recent speech at TedX Sydney, Schwartz said that throughout the years, some of the website's poems were able to fool 65 percent of human readers into thinking they were written by a human.
By starting the website, Schwartz and Laird hoped that people would question the difference between humans and machines and be able to find out what makes us human.
Unstableness(不稳定性)is part of the answer. "The human is not a cold, hard fact," Schwartz said. "Rather, it is something that's constructed(构成)with our ideas and something that changes over time."
A computer may be able to create poems that are correct in both grammar and style, but it wouldn't be able to get the same meanings and feelings across as a human poet could. In fact, today's AI software creates poems based on ones that have already been written by humans. As Schwartz noted, "The computer works like a mirror that reflects(反映)any idea of a human that developers teach it."
So a new challenge arises: What kind of human mind do we want the computer to reflect back at us?
80.What's the purpose of the first three paragraphs?
A.To introduce how World Poetry Day was started.
B.To show the popularity of poetry around the world.
C.To show the importance and beauty of poetry.
D.To give some tips on appreciating(欣赏).
81.What do the data(数据)from "bot or not" show?
A.Computers are better than humans at writing poetry.
B.Computers can also produce poems of high quality.
C.Readers don't really care whether the poems were written by humans.
D.Few readers can tell poems written by computers from those by humans.
82.According to Schwartz, what makes humans different from machines?
A.We have changing ideas. B.We often make mistakes.
C.We are stable in what we do. D.We value feelings over facts.
83.Why can't computers match humans in creating poems according to the article?
A.They can't express feelings as well as humans.
B.They can't create poems that make sense(说得通)at all.
C.They fail to use the correct grammar and style.
D.They only know how to copy poems written by humans.

(2022·江苏盐城·校考一模)UK schools are allowed to punish pupils who break the school rules. Detention is a method that UK schools use to punish children. It means that students are asked to stay at school at the end of the school day. They usually stay for 30 minutes or an hour.
Freya MacDonald was a 15-year-old student from Scotland. She made the news in the UK when she refused to accept her school’s punishment and took legal action(提起法律诉讼). Freya’s family said that she was given detention many times for little things such as having drinks in class and coming into school through a fire door. The teenager said that it was not legal to keep a pupil in the school building if the student didn’t want to be there.
According to Scottish law, every child has the right to get an education. Freya said that repeated detention had bad influence on her education and made it difficult for her to study. She refused to return to school until the school respected(尊重) her rights.

(2022·江苏淮安·校考一模)If you dream of becoming a spaceman after you grow up, get started now! A spaceman needs a strong body and mind. See here what spacemen are able to do. They have many abilities that may make you amazed.
Spacemen are able to live upside down. They do this not just during sleep. They also do this when eating and going to the toilet. Before they fly into space, they have lots of practice. Each upside-down training lasts for 20 days.
Spacemen aren’t only drivers, but repairers and scientists. They have to know every part of the spaceship and how it works. If something goes wrong, they must know how to make it work again. Also, they do scientific experiments in space.
Spacemen know how to live in the wild. They take a knife, a gun and some dye (染料) with them into space. If they land in forests, the knife and the gun can protect them from wild animals. If they fall into the sea, the dye colours the water around yellow. This can help people find them easily on the sea.
Spacemen can’t get dizzy (眩晕的). A spaceship is not a plane. When it goes up, the extra gravity force can break people’s bones. Spacemen must have strong bodies for this. They can’t get a headache or be sick. With many things to take care of, they’ve got no time for sickness.

Sticky Fingers, an experienced burglar now serving a 6-year prison sentence. And He agreed to talk to our reporter.
Reporter: Sticky, what do you look for before burglarizing a house?

    三、阅读补全句子
(2022·江苏淮安·校考一模)Self-esteem (自尊) is made up of the feelings and opinions we have about ourselves. It can change, depending on the way we think. If you want to feel better about yourself, try some of these suggestions.
See mistakes as learning chances. Accept that you will make mistakes. Everyone does. They are part of learning. Instead of thinking “I always mess up”, tell yourself you are not always like that. Just learn your lesson and try to avoid the same mistake next time.
Know what you can change and what you can’t. If you realize that you are unhappy with something about yourself that you can change (how heavy you are), start today. If it’s something you can’t change (how tall you are), accept it.
Reduce thoughts that make you feel bad. Do you often compare yourself with others? Notice what you are thinking. Something like “She’s much better than me. I’m not better at basketball. I should just stop playing.” causes that you feel bad about yourself.
Accept praise. When self-esteem is low, you may fail to see or notice the good things people say about you. You don’t believe it when someone says a nice thing about you. You think “...yeah, but I'm not all that great...” and you pay little attention to the praise. However, it’s better for you to accept the praise, enjoy it and take it seriously.
    根据上面短文的内容完成下列各句。
114.________ are part of learning and we just need to ________ and try to avoid the same mistake next time.
