(2022·江苏盐城·校考一模)When I started teaching in a middle school, I was sure I would change the world and touch children who needed love. Although most of my students seemed to respond pretty well to my teaching, there was a small group of teenage girls who became more and more hostile (敌意的) towards me.
One day a fight happened in my classroom. Trying to stop it, I stepped in to face one of those hostile girls, who started hitting me in the face. Two boys jumped up to control the girl, but the injury (伤害) was done. While the girl was suspended (停课) for a few days, I was determined (决定) that she would not return to my classroom. But I also prayed (企盼). I wanted to see all the students right there in my daily work at school. On the top of my daily teaching-plan book, I wrote this statement, “To see all the children in my classroom is always beautiful.” With this view I could expect to heal (治愈) any anger towards the girl in my heart. After her suspension, she returned to my classroom. I learnt the girl’s mother was trying to raise six children after her husband died in a car accident. The mother and I agreed to work together to help her eldest daughter.
There were no more incidents (事件) of anger the rest of the year. In fact, in the following seven years I was still working at that school. I taught all six of this family’s children. When the youngest child was in my class, the mother told me, “Our family loves you. Every year one of my kids says, ‘I hope I’m in her classroom!’”

B.the author didn’t get angry with the girl at all
C.the girl’s mother was very thankful to the author
D.all the six kids of the family were hard to teach

(2022·江苏盐城·校考一模)There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of(不管)age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough.
According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100, 000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as "lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert(专家)in sleep. He says, "Sleep is like a credit(信用卡)card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you should sleep to "pay back" the hours on your 'sleep credit card'."
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. "Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more."
    7.What does "sleep-deprived" mean in Paragraph 3?
    A.Having a good sleep. B.Excited about sleep.
C.Having less sleep. D.Interested in sleep.
8.Why does Dr. James Maas say "sleep is like a credit card"?
A.Because we should pay money back. B.Because we can borrow time.
C.Because we must pay back if we sleep less. D.Because we can borrow money.
9.What do the words of the famous person mean in the last paragraph?
A.Sleeping during the night is foolish. B.Sleeping during the night is helpful.
C.People have no courage. D.People always do less work.
10.What is the best title of the passage?
A.The Value of Sleep B.The Value of Study
C.The Ways of Eating Less D.The Ways of Making Money

(2022·江苏盐城·校考一模)I remembered I had a gun if I needed it, and turned back towards this man of the island. He was hiding behind another tree but stepped out to meet me.
“Who are you?” I asked, staring at him.
“Ben Gunn”, he answered, and his voice sounded rough and strange. His skin was burnt nearly black by the sun and his clothes were made from pieces of a ship's sail. “Poor Ben Gunn, he went on.” Alone for three years.
    “Were you shipwrecked(船遇难)?” I asked.
“No, my friend”, he said. “Marooned.”
I had heard the word before, and knew it meant cruel(残忍的) punishment often used by pirates-leaving a man alone on some distant, empty island.
“Marooned for three years,” he continued, “living on wild goats and fish. But I'm in great need for real English food back home. You don't have a piece of cheese, do you? Many nights I've dreamed of cheese.”
He continued. “Well, tell me your name.”
    “Jim,” I told him.
“Well, Jim”, he said, looking around and lowering his voice to a whisper, “I'm rich”. I was now sure the poor man was crazy, but he repeated his words. “Rich, I say! Now, Jim, that isn't Flint's ship, is it?”
I began to think that I had found a friend, and I answered him at once. “It's not Flint's ship any more. Flint is dead, but there are still some of Flint's men aboard, and that's bad news for us.”
“A man with one leg?” he asked, fear in his voice.
    “Silver?” I asked.
“Yes, Silver,” he said, “that was his name.”
“He's the cook, and their leader too. And told him the fight between Flint and the cook, and the danger we were now in.”
“You're in trouble, Jim,” he said when I'd finished. “Well, Ben Gunn will help you. Will your squire(乡绅) be generous if do, do you think? I don' t want him to give me a job, but will he give me one thousand pounds out of money that's really mine?”
“I'm sure he will,” I said.

(2022·江苏苏州·星海实验中学校考一模)One wet, rainy April afternoon Miss O’ Shay, the principal, sent for Nancy Lee to stop by her office as school closed. Pupils without umbrellas or raincoats crowded in doorways hoping to make it home between showers. Outside the skies were grey. Nancy Lee’s thoughts were suddenly grey, too.
She did not think she had done anything wrong, yet that tight (紧的) little knot came in her throat just the same as she came near Miss O’Shay’s door. Perhaps she had banged her locker too often and too hard. Perhaps the note in French she had written to Sallie halfway across the study hall just for fun had never got to Sallie but into Miss O’Shay’s hands instead.
She knocked on Miss O’Shay’s door. That familiarly solid and competent voice said, “Come in.”
Miss O’Shay had a way of making you feel welcome, even if you came to be punished.
“Sit down, Nancy Lee Johnson,” said Miss O’Shay. “I have something to tell you.” Nancy Lee sat down.“But I must ask you to promise not to tell anyone yet.”
“I won’t, Miss O’Shay,” Nancy Lee said, wondering what on earth the principal had to say to her.
“You are about to graduate,” Miss O’Shay said. “And we shall miss you. You have been an excellent student, Nancy, and you will not be without honors (荣誉) on the senior list, as I am sure you know. ”
At that point there was a light knock on the door. Miss O’Shay called out, “Come in,” and Miss Dietrich entered. “May I be part of this, too?” she asked, tall and smiling.
“Of course,” Miss O’Shay said. “I was just telling Nancy Lee what we thought of her. But I hadn’t got around to giving her the news. Perhaps, Miss Dietrich, you’d like to tell her yourself.”
Miss Dietrich was always direct. “Nancy Lee,” she said, “your picture has won the Artist Club scholarship.”
The brown girl’s eyes widened, her heart jumped, then her throat tightened again. She tried to smile, but instead tears came to her eyes.
“Dear Nancy Lee,” Miss O’Shay said, “we are so happy for you.” The elderly white woman took her hand and shook it warmly while Miss Dietrich smiled with pride.
Nancy Lee must have danced all the way home. She never remembered quite how she got there through the rain. She hoped she had been calm. But certainly she hadn’t stopped to tell anybody her secret on the way. Raindrops, smiles, and tears mingled on her brown face. She hoped her mother hadn’t yet got home and that the house was empty.
19.How did Nancy feel on her way to Miss O’Shay’s office?
    A.Scared. B.Excited. C.Uncertain. D.Confident.
20.What can we infer from the passage about Nancy?

21.Which is the best title for this story?
A.A New Star. B.The Girl. C.A Young Artist. D.The News.

(2022·江苏苏州·星海实验中学校考一模)Historically, most cars have run on gasoline(汽油), but that may change in the future: cars can also run on other liquid fuels(液体燃料) and electricity.
Gasoline is from oil. The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物). Gasoline provides great power for cars. However, it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise. So gasoline can’t be the best fuel.
Another choice is electricity. Electricity cars can be as efficient(效能好的) as cars using gasoline. And they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive. Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.
The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.
One way to make such fuels is to get CO2 from the air and put it in water. Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.
Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use. But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.
For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it. Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline. Governments and car producers are doing everything they can to cut down the costs. In the end, the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.
    22.Gasoline provides cars with ________.
    A.great power B.fresh air C.clean water D.enough space
23.According to Paragraph 3, we can infer that electric cars ________.
A.produce less pollution B.will become more and more expensive
C.will become more popular D.are more efficient than those using gasoline
24.The structure of the passage may be ________.
    A. B. C. D.
25.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How Do We Protect Our Planet? B.What Are the Fuels’ Differences?
C.What Is the Best Fuel for Cars? D.How Do We Make Fuels for Cars?

(2022·江苏宿迁·统考一模)Sun bears(马来熊)are the smallest of the world’s eight bear species(物种). They have a black coat and a white or golden colour on their bodies. Their homes are in the tropical forests(热带雨林)of Southeast Asia. They live in trees and eat both plants and animals. They can grow to be 1.4 meters in height and 65 kilograms in weight. They usually live alone and are happy to spend most of their time by themselves.
Scientists studied sun bears in the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. They found that although sun bears mostly live alone, they have developed a surprising social skill. They can copy(模仿)other sun bears’ facial expressions(面部表情)as a form of communication. They can even copy exact muscular(肌肉的)movements that other sun bears make—such as making a face.
The ability to copy facial expressions is found in humans, gorillas(大猩猩), some monkeys and some other animals. But until now, only humans and gorillas have the ability to exactly copy facial expressions. However, scientists found that sun bears can copy facial expressions as well as humans and gorillas. This surprised them because sun bears are alone and they have no close relationship with human beings.
Although they live alone in the wild, the sun bears in the study often played gently with each other. Sometimes they played with faster actions such as hitting and biting. Scientists are still not sure what messages the sun bears were sending to one another.
29.According to the passage, where do sun bears usually live?
A.In caves. B.On the ice. C.By the river. D.In trees.

C.they can copy exact muscular movements of other sun bears
D.they have no close relationship with human beings
31.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.A warm home on the earth B.A brave animal in the forest
C.A new friend of human beings D.A surprising social skill of sun bears

(2022·江苏宿迁·统考一模)We usually think that garbage is useless and dirty. However, an art exhibition in 2019 proves that”useless” things can actually be helpful.
Dear Pretty Rubbish, an art event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN) and digital media art company Blackbow, was held in Beijing. It looked at wasteful garbage and asked questions about the relationship between our lifestyles and our garbage.
“We hope that everyone who visited the show can think about how ‘useless things’ are produced, why they are tossed out, and whether ‘useless things’ are really useless”, said Cao Yujia, the design director at Blackbow.
Artists Zhou Yuxuan and Liu Yifan collected nylon cable ties, LED lights and plastic bottles from designers’ workshops to create a work where plastics, in the shape of cells, “grow” in a comer. There, the lights blink(闪烁) regularly just like “breathing”. When people walk near it, the work responds by showing light patterns, as if communicating with the visitors.
Speaking about the work, Zhou said: “It’s like some kind of communication between humans and plastics.”
Plastic has a life longer than almost any creature, taking centuries to break down. Though people think plastics damage the environment, they are a big part of our daily lives. “So we want to ask the question: Although the damage continues, is there a way for humans to reconcile (和解) with plastics?” said Zhou.
32.Which phrase can take the place of the underlined phrase “tossed out”?
    A.worked out B.used up C.thrown away D.put off
33.Which of the following might Zhou agree with?
    A.Useless things are really useless.

D.Humans should find a better way to deal with plastics.
34.Which word can best describe the art event?
    A.Creative B.Wasteful C.Balanced D.Awful
35.Which is the best title of the text?

C.Live peacefully with “garbage” D.Communications between human beings and nature

(2022·江苏常州·校考一模)Now more and more people who want to learn a new language turn to mobile apps for help. While these language learning apps allow users to study a new language anywhere at any time, how effective(有效的) are they?
That is a question Shawn Loewen, a professor at Michigan State University (MSU), is trying to answer. He recently made a study focusing on Babbel, a popular language learning app, to see if it really worked at teaching a new language.
“Millions around the world are already using language learning apps, but few studies have researched whether they can help improve one’s speaking skills,”Loewen said. “There are almost no other studies that have looked at mobile language learning apps. So, this study is very important to the field.”
In the study, 85 students at MSU used Babbel for 12 weeks to learn Spanish. At the beginning of the study, the students took a test to assess(评价) their speaking, vocabulary and grammar in Spanish. After 12 weeks, the 54 students who completed all study requirements took the same test again to see how much knowledge they had gained.
The study showed that nearly all the students who completed the requirements improved their Spanish language knowledge and ability to communicate after 12 weeks of using Babbel.
“On the whole, learners in this study increased their oral proficiency(口语能力).” Loewen said. “These results show that Babbel not only helps teach knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, but also speeds up the development of oral communication skills.”
Also, learning gains in oral proficiency, grammar and vocabulary were connected with how much time students spent using the app. 59% of students improved speaking skills by at least one level in an American foreign language proficiency assessing system. The percentage of learners who improved rose even higher among those who spent more time using the app. For those who studied at least six hours, 69% increased at least one level, rising to 75% for those who studied for at least 15 hours.
51.What does Loewen say about his app study?
A.It is based on a lot of published studies.
B.It compares many language learning apps.
C.It answers a question about learning new languages.
D.It may be the first to study if apps help language learning.
52.What did the students do in the study?
A.They learnt Spanish in class using Babbel.
B.They tried using different language learning apps.
C.Some of them took two tests before and after 12 weeks
D.Some of them finished their study requirements in 24 weeks.
53.What did Loewen’s study find about Babbel?
A.It can be useful for just some of its users.
B.It effectively helps teach a new language.
C.It might be the best Spanish learning tool so far.
D.It does better in improving skills than knowledge.
54.What do the numbers in the last paragraph show?
A.The relationship between app use time and progress.
B.The disadvantages of using language learning apps.
C.The big differences in students’ learning habits.
D.The difficulties of learning a new language.

(2022·江苏常州·校考一模)Ludwig van Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians that ever lived. The German composer and pianist completed 722 musical works, including nine symphonies (交响曲), although being completely deaf during his last ten years. Unluckily, the master died while still working on his 10th Symphony. Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used AI (人工智能) to complete the artist’s final masterpiece.
Dr. Matthias Rider, a famous director, first came up with the idea. He thought it was a suitable way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in 2020. He managed to group music composer Walter Werzowa and Dr Almed Elgammal, one creator of innovative (创新的) AI technology.
Elgamnal and his partners got the AI software familiar (熟悉的) at first with all kinds of classical music, and then narrowed it to just Beethoven’s works. At the same time, Werzowa and his group tried to understand the rough sketches (草稿) and the few notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the 10th Symphony.
The team then began feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. Elgammal says that since music is very structured and mathematical (精确的), AI can predict (预测) the next note reasonably correctly. To stay true to Beethoven’s style. Elgammal sent Werzowa hundreds of Al-created musical note variations (变类) every evening. Werzowa would listen and then choose the closest one to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to produce the next suggestions. Piece by piece, the team was able to complete the 10th Symphony!
Not surprisingly, the AI-created masterpiece is causing some controversy. Some experts believe technology should not be used to copy the human creative process. Elgamnal says their AI software is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.

(2022·江苏常州·校考一模)From grandparents in parks to Taoisi(道家的)believers at old temples. Tai Chi can be seen in all ways of Chinese people’s lives.
The traditional saying is that the wise man Zhang Sanfeng of the Song Dynasty created Tai Chi after seeing a fight between an eagle and a snake. Now most people agree that modern Tai Chi dated back from the Chen style Tai Chi,which first appeared during the 19th century.
Tai Chi has its philosophical roots(哲学根源)in Taoism, following the simple rule of “overcoming the vigorous by the soft”, which is represented by the famous symbols of Yin and Yang. Yin means the dark and cold side, and Yang means the bright and hot side. Chinese people believe that the two sides interact with each other to balance the world.
According to historical records, modern Tai Chi was founded by Chen Wangting, who lived in today’s Henan Province. Based on the Chen style, Yang Luchan, a Hebei native of the Qing Dynasty: created the Yang style Tai Chi, which has the largest number of followers in the world.
In 1956, the then national sports authority introduced 24-form Tai Chi. Changed from traditional Yang style Tai Chi but simplified and standardized, 24-form Tai Chi is widely accepted for relaxation and health at present times.
Tai Chi is of broad use to people’s health. Studies suggest that the practice of Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, reduce nervous tension, and improve the immune system(免疫系统)as well as the breathing and digestive systems. Practitioners also have an increased sense of self-confidence from practicing the sport.

(2022·江苏常州·校考一模)I was beginning to like this strange little man. I gave him another whisky(威士忌)and asked him why he thought he was now in danger.
“I came to London by a strange way—Through Paris,  Norway, and Scotland. I changed my name in every country, and when I got to London. I thought I was safe. But last night somebody put a card under my door. On it was the name of the man I fear most in the world.”
“So I decided I had to die. I got a dead body—it’s easy to get one in London, if you know how. The body was the right age, but the face was different. I dressed it in my clothes and shot(射 击) it in the face with my own gun. I left many empty whisky bottles in my room. I have got someone to find me tomorrow morning and call the police. The police will think I drank too much and then killed myself.” He paused. “I watched from the window until I saw you come home, and then came down to meet you. Sir. I guess you know about me as much as of this business.”
It was the strangest of stories. However, in my experience, the strangest stories are often true. And if the man just wanted to get into my hat and murder me, why didn’t he tell a simpler story?
I thought for a second or two. “Right,” I said. “I’ll trust you for tonight. Just one work, Mr. Scudder. I believe you’re honest. If not. I should warn you that I know how to use a gun.”
“Certainly, sir,” he jumped up. “Thank you very much. And could I use your bathroom?”
Half an hour later, I didn’t recognize(认出) him at first. Only the bright eyes were the same. His beard was gone, and his hair was completely different. He walked like a soldier, wearing glasses. And he no longer spoke like an American.
Not Mr. Scudder, but Captain Thcophilus Digby of the British Army. Please remember that.
I made him a bed in my study, and then went to bed myself, happier than I had been for the past month. Interesting things did happen sometimes, even in London.
61.Where did the story above happen?
A.In an unknown building. B.In the writer’s house.
    C.In Mr. Scudder’s flat. D.In a whiskey club.
62.Who was the little strange man?
    A.An American. B.An Englishman. C.A Frenchman. D.A German.

(2022·江苏常州·校考一模)I heard many parents complaining their teenage children are rebelling(反逆). I wish it were so.
At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are following the same way of showing they disagree with their parents. Instead of being himself bravely, most of them are firmly(坚定地) taking one another’s hands for reassurance(安盟).
They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up listening to the same record together. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that many people are doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(茧) into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. Industry has successfully made a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from advertisements what a teenager should have and should be.
And many of today’s parents have come to speak highly of the popularity of their children. All these add to a great barrier(障碍) for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share with your classmates at once. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really matters.
65.From the second paragraph, we can know the writer thinks that many teenagers ________.
A.are much afraid of getting lost B.don’t have confidence to go out alone
C.fail to show their own personalities D.have difficulty understanding each other
66.The underlined phrase “a larger cocoon” in the third paragraph refers to(指代)________.
A.the shining music world B.the popularity wave in the society
C.the parental care and love D.the lasting and firm friendship
67.Which is NOT a barrier for teenagers to go their own way according to the passage?
    A.Teenagers are experiencing rebellion.
B.Parents pay much attention to their popularity.
    C.Industry has effects on teenagers.
D.Teenagers hope to look the same as teen stars.
68.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To educate parents. B.To explain rebellion.
C.To warn students. D.To encourage teenagers.

(2022·江苏常州·常州市清潭中学校考一模)Sometime in 1885 or 1886, Arthur Conan Doyle was doodling (信手乱涂) on a sheet of paper. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s Auguste Dupin, he had the idea for a “consulting detective”, who would also use “the Rules of Evidence” to catch his man. But what would he be called? “Ormond Sacker”? “Sherrinford Holmes”?
Had he settled on either of these alternatives, the modern-day fan clubs would be able to look closely through their magnifying glasses (放大镜) at that historic piece of paper at an exhibition opening at the Museum of London on Friday.
Sherlock Holmes: The Man Who Never Lived and Will Never Die is the first major show for the great detective since a Holmes display graced the Festival of Britain in 1951. It’s a winningly silly title: there are an unlimited number of men who never lived and will never die, and a very large number of fictional creations of whom the same could also be said. But you can see what they are getting at.
It is likely that the show should take place at the Museum of London. Holmes occupied perhaps London’s most famous imaginary address — 221B Baker Street — and Dr. Watson wrote that his “knowledge of the byways of London was extraordinary”. In the form of his “Baker Street Irregulars”, he even employed a street-level spy-network o the homeless. London is often described as another character in the stories.
But, as historian David Cannadine points out in a fine, questioning essay in a new book accompanying the exhibition, Holmes’s London is actually only sketchily imagined in the stories. Conan Doyle grew up in Edinburgh, was educated in Lancashire and Austria, and lived in central London for less than a year before moving first to South Norwood, then in short order to Hindhead in Surrey and later to Sussex. To move Holmes around the capital, Conan Doyle used contemporary books of street maps and the London Post Office Directory. And he made all sorts of mistakes.
Also, before fan-fiction as we think of it now got under way, the Holmes stories led to a strange academic version of fan-fiction: Holmesians, taking a scholarly interest in the texts almost on the assumption that Holmes and Watson were real historical characters.
It should be noted that Conan Doyle himself didn’t sweat the details. Everything from the location of Watson’s old war wound to his marital situation and the address of his consulting room was distinctly patchy (东拼西凑的).
Holmes is, or might as well be, a magician. In this respect, the modern BBC TV adaptations — whose leaps of tricks I’ve seen complained about — are in keeping with Conan Doyle’s originals.
He’s not the product, not any more, of a single author. And he’s never going to be on the reader’s level — nor that of his friend Dr. Watson. Conan Doyle’s consulting detective is, made by the imaginations of others, a sort of god. And like all the best gods, he is — as the new exhibition’s title indicates — both imaginary and everlasting.
72.What do Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes share in common according to the author?
A.They are both fictional detectives that lived in London.
B.They are both characters created by Arthur Conan Doyle.
C.They both use “the Rules of Evidence” to solve cases.
    D.They both use magnifying glasses.

C.London is home to the two main characters, Sherlock and Watson
D.the author Conan Doyle made a lot of mistakes when in London

(2022·江苏常州·常州市清潭中学校考一模)I spend half of my life with my mother and the other half with my father. My father lives with a twenty-pound cat named Tofu. He calls me his favorite daughter. I am the only child.
My father’s apartment is quite different from any other people’s living space. Except for my room, there is no furniture. He doesn’t like sofas or any comfortable chairs, so he has only a drawing table, a desk and a bed. For three years he has resisted buying a stereo because he thinks it’s ugly and will mess up his studio.
From my father’s studio, window, you can see a large part of San Francisco. I like to watch the colors change in the bay when the sun is setting. All the walls are white, and framed posters of my father’s last three books hang side by side. He spends a lot of time lying on the studio floor. That’s how he thinks, he says. Then he does yoga. He has a big kitchen, and on top of the refrigeration is an old clock he winds every week for good luck. The last time the clock stopped, my father’s car was pulled away by the police and some other unfortunate things happened, so he has become very superstitious(迷信). When he goes out of town, he hires someone to feed Tofu and wind the clock so it won’t stop.
The one thing he has plenty of is house rules. You have to take off your shoes when you came in. He won’t allow anyone who wears a baseball cap into his house. He says only baseball players should wear baseball caps and only the catchers should wear them backward. Every time I go to stay at his house, he makes up a new rule. “House rule number 579, no television programs with laugh tracks!” he will say. Well then he can never remember the numbers, so they change constantly.
The rule that he always enforces is the one that requires me to write a two-page-long essay anytime I want something. He didn’t speak English until he was sixteen, and he had a hard time learning to write it, so he wants me to become a good writer at an early age. The ritual started when I asked him if I could have my ear pierced when I was nine. He said it was barbaric and told me I couldn’t do it until I was thirty-five. But I kept asking him, and he finally said that if I wrote an essay and I could persuade him in writing why I wanted holes in my ears, maybe he would say okay. I wrote my first essay for my father, and after one month of writing and rewriting, he backed down and gave me his permission.

(2022·江苏常州·常州市清潭中学校考一模)Full stops intimidate young people when used in social media communication as they are interpreted as a sign of anger, according to linguistic experts.
Teenagers and those in their early twenties, classified as Generation Z, have grown up with smartphones which they use to send short messages without full stops. Linguistic experts are now investigating why teens interpret a correctly-punctuated text as a signal of annoyance.
The debate became active again after writer Rhiannon Cosslett tweeted: “Older people, do you realise that ending a sentence with a full stop comes across as sort of abrupt and unfriendly to younger people in a message?” Genuinely curious. That caused crime novelist Sophie Hannah to reply: “Just asked 16-year-old son—apparently this is true. If he got a message with full stops at the end of sentences? He’d think the sender was weird, mean or too blunt.”
According to experts, youngsters used to communicating electronically break up their thoughts by sending each one as a separate message, rather than using a full stop, which they use only to signal they are annoyed. Some have said the full stop is unnecessary when used in texting because the message is ended just by sending it.
Linguist Dr Lauren Fonteyn of Leiden University in Holland tweeted: “If you send a text message without a full stop, it’s already obvious that you’ve concluded the message. So if you add that additional marker for completion, they will read something into it and it tends to be a falling intonation (语调) or negative tone. Make your sentence an open end, and it will make friends online very happy and relaxed. So full stops could be unnecessary in most cases.”
Professor David Crystal, one of the world’s leading language experts, argues that the usage of full stops is being “revised in a really fundamental way”. In his book, Making a Point, he says that the punctuation mark has become an “emotion marker” which warns the recipient (接受者) that the sender is angry or annoyed.

    A.Frighten. B.Move. C.Delight. D.Reward.

C.Full stops are punctuation marks without any emotion.
D.Full stops are regarded as an indication of the sender’s anger.

    A.Skeptical. B.Conservative. C.Negative. D.Tolerant.

(2022·江苏连云港·校考一模)DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our parents, because we get some of the DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes (基因)” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map, but we do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we will use in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people getting jobs.
