(2022·江苏·统考一模)Fiona McIntyre is a taxi driver in London. She tells us about her work and some of her experiences.
Q: When did you start?
I’ve been a taxi driver for about five years. Before that I was a bus driver in London, and I enjoyed it, but I wanted more freedom so I changed and started driving my taxi.
Q: Have you ever had any famous passengers?
Oh yes. I’ve had film stars, politicians, you know, lots of famous people. About a year ago, a really famous actor got in my taxi. I took him to the airport. We were stuck on the way and it took a long time to get there, so he missed his plane and failed to meet his fans. It wasn’t my mistake but when he got out of the taxi, he shouted at me angrily! I said to him, ‘Next time, take a bus!”
Q: Have passengers ever left anything in your taxi?
Oh yes! People have left all kinds of things—a suitcase, a hat, mobile phones, of course, even a dog once! Years ago, a woman left a pair of shoes on the seat. And one time a passenger let his teeth here! Not real teeth, of course—false teeth.
And people have asked me to do some strange jobs. Once a doctor stopped me outside a hospital and asked me to take a skeleton to another hospital. Professors usually use skeletons to teach medical students, you know. And I did. But I asked him to pay first—the skeleton couldn’t pay after all!
Q: What do you think is the worst part of your job?
Good question. I’ve always enjoyed being a taxi driver and I don’t want to change. But of course, sometimes, it’s not great. I don’t like driving around without a passenger, but it’s better than just waiting at the airport or at a railway station. I think that’s the worst part—waiting.
1.The famous actor missed his plane because ________.
A.Fiona didn’t drive well B.Fiona wasn’t very polite
C.there were too many fans D.there was too much traffic
2.The underlined (划线的) word “him” in Fiona’s answer to the third question refers to ________.
A.the skeleton B.the doctor C.the professor D.the student
3.According to the interview, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.Fiona has worked as a taxi driver since five years ago.
B.Sometimes passengers may leave their pets in Fiona’s taxi.
C.Fiona prefers just waiting to driving around without a passenger.
D.Fiona doesn’t think that the famous actor was polite.
(2022·江苏·统考一模)During the Tang Dynasty (618—907), Emperor Taizong asked the prime minister (宰相) Feng Deyi to recommend talented people. However, several months passed, Feng didn’t recommend anyone.
“I tried my best, but there are not unusual and perfect people at all,” Feng said.
‘‘People are like utensils(器物). What we need to do is to make good use of their strengths. You cannot excuse yourself for not noticing talented people. How could you say that there are no talented people in our country?” said the emperor.
Indeed, each utensil or tool has its use. A knife is made to cut things while chopsticks are made to pick up food. We can’t use a knife as a chopstick. Like a utensil, each person has a special strength. Nobody is perfect. We can’t expect a person to be good at everything.
With this idea in mind, Emperor Taizong discovered many talented people of different backgrounds. He offered them important positions, which helped them make the best use of their talents. His talented people helped the society develop and created a “golden age”.
A good example is Ma Zhou, who grew up in a poor family. Ma gave a lot of useful advice, so Emperor Taizong offered him a position and promoted him many times. Ma helped the emperor deal with many difficult things and became a well-known person in history.
Chang Sheng, a Chinese teacher, says if a person is talented in one way, we should give them a chance. The same idea can be found in the Analects of Confucius (《论语》). Treating people as utensils shows that we can not only lead people well, but also allow different kinds of people to work well. President Xi Jinping once told this story to officials, asking them to value talented people.
Today, as our work is being divided more and more clearly, the idea still makes sense. If we become leaders someday, we should help others give full play to their strengths. For example, Liu Bang, the founder of Han Dynasty (206BC—AD220), let Zhang Liang and Xiao He work as advisors for their wisdom while inviting Han Xin to lead the army for his war strategies. Known as the ‘‘three heroes of the early Han Dynasty”, they helped Liu build a strong dynasty.
4.Why couldn’t Feng Deyi find any talented people in Taizong’s opinion?
A.There were no talented people then. B.He was afraid of being taken instead.
C.Something was wrong with his standards. D.He wasn’t satisfied with the emperor.
5.Ma Zhou is a good example of people who ________.
A.have no talent but are still useful B.are unusual and perfect
C.know when to take a chance D.show talent in the right field
6.What might be Chang Sheng’s opinion?
A.People with any talent should be valued. B.Talented people are difficult to discover.
C.Using people as tools is a very wise way. D.Using people as tools doesn’t work today.
7.What is the main idea of the story?
A.Chances only come to those who are well prepared.
B.Talented people should be valued and put in the right place.
C.A good horse needs to be discovered by wise men.
D.A great talent also needs the great will to succeed.
(2022·江苏·统考一模)
Self-driving cars are usually considered to be more efficient and convenient. Like human drivers using eyes and ears to determine what is going on around us, self-driving cars use sensors including cameras, radar, and lidar to do the same job. But using the sensors to analyze what they see is complicated. In some cases, self-driving cars can’t make exact decisions any better than a human driver could, which may result in great danger.
The idea of building smart roads can help solve the problem. These smart roads will be able to communicate with self-driving cars. Scientists have imagined lots of different ways to connect cars with other vehicles on the road, traffic lights, the road itself, and more. One idea is using radio signals to connect cars with traffic lights so that they work together. These signals might tell cars about a red light and help ensure a safe stop. Another idea is building a possible network of control towers to deal with all signals and make overall arrangements. Signals from cars and roadways would all come to and from these towers, allowing communication among the entire network. Each crossroad can also act like a control tower, communicating with each other and able to route traffic to reduce traffic jams.
____ One possibility is that roads continue to have sidewalks and bicycle roads, as they do now. Crosswalks on smart roads could be designed with sensors so that traffic lights will be lighted up green or red, depending on if it is safe for pedestrians to cross. However, this could cause problems too. People might step into the road as they like and fast-moving cars would not have enough time to stop. Another possibility is that we design two separate systems: roads for self-driving vehicles and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.
While on the way to realize the idea, technology is still needed to be developed. Another problem is the cost. The various sensors in self—driving cars built for smart roads can be more than $100,000 per vehicle. Smart roads would require to be improved too, which will also cost a lot. Though there are difficulties to overcome, researchers and scientists are making efforts to address these problems.
8.While driving, self—driving cars ________.
A.are much smarter than human drivers
B.refuse to communicate with other cars
C.analyze situations with the help of drivers
D.use sensors to determine the things around
9.Which of the following is the best to fill in the “________” in Paragraph 3?
A.Which roads will be safer for self-driving cars?
B.What trouble will pedestrians have on smart roads?
C.How will the traffic lights and sensors work together?
D.Where will people walk and ride bikes on smart roads?
10.According to the passage, what can we know about smart roads?
A.Control towers will help ensure safety and improve traffic.
B.Cost is the biggest difficulty people face in building smart roads.
C.Smart roads will offer more convenience to cars than pedestrians.
D.Smart roads will have separate systems for different self-driving cars.
11.The best title for the passage can be ________.
A.Trouble of Self-driving Cars B.Smart Cars Need Smart Roads
C.One Big Step for Smart Roads D.A Future Vehicle: Self-driving Cars
(2022·江苏·统考一模)It was eleven o’clock at night. A large woman was walking towards home. She had a large purse with everything but money. It hung right behind her shoulder. A boy ran up and tried to snatch her purse. The large woman simply turned around, caught the boy by his shirt, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
After that, the woman asked, “Boy, don’t you feel ashamed of yourself?”
“I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“What did you want to do it for? Your face is dirty. Nobody at home told you to wash your face?”
The boy shook his head.
“Then,” the woman shouted, “it will get washed this evening. You are going to remember Mrs. Jones!” She dragged the frightened boy behind her and got to her door.
“Are you taking me to the police?” The boy asked.
‘‘Not with that face! Have you been home to eat yet?”
“There’s nobody at my house.”
“Then we’ll eat,” said Mrs. Jones. “I believe you’re hungry, so you tried to steal.”
“I wanted a pair of leather shoes,” said the boy.
“Well, you didn’t have to snatch my purse to get things you want. Besides, there’s little money in it.”
There was a long silence. After he washed his face and turned around, wondering what to do next, he saw the door open. He could run, run, run and run!
In the corner of the room, Mrs. Jones was heating some beans. She didn’t watch the boy to see if he was going to run, nor did she watch her purse which she left behind on the bed. “Do you need somebody to get milk or something?” The boy asked.
“I don’t unless you want,” said Mrs. Jones.
As they ate, she didn’t ask about where he lived, or his family, or anything that would embarrass him. Instead, she said, “eat some more, boy!”
When they finished eating, she got up. ‘‘Now here, take this ten dollars and buy your shoes. Next time, don’t snatch my purse, nor anyone else’s — shoes got in bad ways will burn your feet!”
The boy really wanted to say something to Mrs. Jones. But he failed to say a word as he turned at the foot of the steps and looked up at the large woman.

(2022·江苏常州·校联考一模)As the Winter Olympic Games continue in China, here are some of the different technologies being used in Beijing.
Robots
Different kinds of robots have been used to help visitors and athletes. Some machines are being used to satisfy social distancing requirements related to COVID-19. Robots are also transporting equipment, cleaning surfaces and preparing and carrying food to limit human-to-human contact.
Smart beds
At the Winter Olympic Village, the athletes are sleeping on “smart beds” with sensors(传感器). The devices collect information on things like breathing and heart rates. They also have controls to allow users to choose sleeping positions, including one called “zero gravity”. That setting is supposed to reduce pressure(压力) on muscles and joints(关节) and support higher quality sleep.
These high-tech beds are very different from the lower-tech versions(版本) provided for Olympic athletes at last year’s Tokyo Games. The beds used in Japan were made of cardboard material, which received wide attention for being so unusual.
Digital currency(数字货币)
China’s digital money will be in use at the Olympics in the currency’s first main test with foreigners. Visitors can use digital yuan to pay for food, transportation and other goods and services. Users can get the currency by downloading an app, getting a digital yuan card or by exchanging foreign currency into digital form through machines in Olympic areas.
App monitoring
All Olympic players must use an app, called MY2022, for daily monitoring for COVID-19. The app allows users to send personal health information every day as a requirement to take part in the Games. The system is part of China’s aggressive effort to limit the spread of the virus during the Games.
16.Which of the following CANNOT be done by robots?
A.Transporting equipment. B.Preparing and carrying food.
C.Making machines. D.Cleaning surfaces.
17.A “zero gravity” bed is supposed to ________.
A.support higher quality sleep.
B.reduce pressure on blood and joints.
C.be as comfortable as the lower-tech ones in Japan.
D.receive less public attention than that in Japan.
18.What is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Some machines are being used to satisfy social distancing requirements.
B.Visitors can only use digital currency during the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
C.App monitoring is very useful in limiting the spread of the virus.
D.Sensors in smart beds can collect information on breathing and heart rates.
(2022·江苏常州·校联考一模)Whenever you talk about China, there must be one thing you cannot ignore (忽略) — the Chinese food. Most Chinese consider food as an important thing. They do not greet each other with “How are you?” but instead they ask, “Have you eaten?” Chinese table manners are still studied today. Here are some examples.
Before a meal, guests should wait for the host to invite them to get seated. The seat that is given to the “guest of honor (荣誉)” or the oldest person in the family. The “seat of honor” is usually facing the entrance of the room.
The next rule that appears in the seating plan is connected with the “social ranking” of a person. This rule will be accepted even if the dinner is of family get-together. That is, if you are a manager, you may get a closer seat to the “guest of honor”. If you are just a worker, farther.
As for the host, he may take the “worst” seat, usually the one nearest the kitchen or the door. It is better to be seated after the “guest of honor” sits down.
Chinese people like sharing food together and the dishes are all placed in the center of a round table rather than a rectangular table like in the West. On the table there is a Lazy Susan, which makes all the diners equally reach the served meals and makes everybody feel respected.
In China, at the beginning of a formal dinner, the host must first toast (敬酒) to the guests to show his hospitality (热情). Wine, beer or even soda can be used to toast. If you hope to take a drink of wine at a formal dinner, you must first toast another dinner guest. Normally, your glass will be refilled immediately following a toast in preparation for the next one. So… Good luck!
Of course, there are still many important rules for you to explore.
19.The underlined words “a Lazy Susan” in Paragraph 5 means ________.
A.a pair of chopsticks B.a public spoon
C.a round disc (圆盘) D.a dinner plate
20.The sentence “Looking at the dinner table, you can see something different.” should be put at the beginning of ________.
A.Paragraph 3 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 5 D.Paragraph 6
21.What is true according to the passage?
A.The host usually takes the seat facing the door.
B.The guests are mainly offered seats according to their positions.
C.Usually the oldest person toasts the host first at the beginning of the dinner.
D.The culture of food plays the most important role in China.
(2022·江苏常州·校联考一模)Shakespeare, perhaps more than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to enjoy the richness and varieties (多样化) of the English language than by studying the different ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some English usage and the meaning of many words have changed since Shakespeare’s day.
However, it is surprising that we should know comparatively little about the life of the greatest English writer. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, and that he died there in 1616. He almost certainly attended the Grammar School in the town, but of this we cannot be sure. We know he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his masterpieces. But this is almost all that we do know.
However, what is important about Shakespeare’s life is not its details but the products, the plays and the poems. For many years, scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare’s life to the small number we already have and for an equally long time critics (批评) have been theorizing (理论化) about the plays. Sometimes, indeed, it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under a great deal of comment (评论) that has been written upon it.
Luckily, this is not likely to happen. Shakespeare’s people have long delighted (使……开心) not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten.
22.What’s Para.1 mainly about?
A.The great varieties in Shakespeare’s writing styles.
B.The great length of Shakespeare’s works.
C.The richness of the content in Shakespeare’s works.
D.The rich English language used by Shakespeare in his works.
23.According to the passage, which of the following remains uncertain about Shakespeare?
A.His year of birth. B.His marriage.
C.His life in the Grammar School. D.His year of death.
24.What does the last sentence in Para. 3 mean?
A.People can’t see the poetry of Shakespeare any more.
B.The people’s idea is printed on the poetry of Shakespeare.
C.People don’t think the poetry of Shakespeare good any more.
D.Some people pay more attention to the comment than to Shakespeare’s poetry.
25.The underlined phrase “Shakespeare’s people” in Para. 4 refers to (指的是) “________”.
A.the characters in Shakespeare’s works
B.the people whose first language is English
C.the people living in Shakespeare’s day
D.the readers of Shakespeare’s works
(2022·江苏常州·校联考一模)Most adults find it hard to recall(回想起) events from their first few years of life and now scientists have found exactly when these childhood memories disappear.
A new study has found that most three-year-olds can recall a lot of what happened to them over a year earlier, and these memories persist while they are five and six, but by the time they are over seven, these memories decline(衰退) fast.
Most children by the age of eight or nine can only recall 35% of their experiences from under the age of three, according to the new findings.
The scientists behind the research said this is because at around this age the way we form memories begins to change. They said that before the age of seven children do not have a sense of time and place in their memories. For older children, however, the early events they can recall are usually more adult-like in the way they are formed. Children also have a far faster speed of forgetting than adults. The findings also help to explain why children can often have clear memories of events but then forget them just a couple of years later.
The youngsters first visited the lab(实验室) at the age of three and discussed six events from their past, such as family outings, trips to the zoo and the first day of school. The children then returned for a second period between the ages of five and nine to discuss the same events. The researchers found that between the ages of five and seven, the number of memories the children could recall remained between 63 and 72 percent. However, the amount of information eight-to-nine-year-old children could recall dropped to 35 and 36 percent.
26.The new study tells us that ________.
A.childhood memories decline quickly at a certain age
B.three-year-old kids are the cleverest
C.children under 7 can remember everything well
D.some adults cannot recall past events
27.What does underlined word “persist” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Change. B.Exist. C.Appear. D.Return.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Adults cannot have clear memories of past events.
B.Children can think like adults as they get older.
C.Children often forget things because they have no idea of time or place.
D.Children under and above 7 years old have different ways of forming memories.
29.From the last paragraph, we know that 9-year-old children _________ in the second period.
A.refused to discuss the same events
B.remembered all their family outings
C.could recall 72 percent of their past events
D.only remembered a small part of their past events
(2022·江苏常州·统考一模)Probably nothing can compare with a parent’s will to protect her child. Let’s see how these animals find ways to protect their children.
Sperm whales are emperors of the ocean. They are also the world’s biggest babysitters(保姆). The mother supports her baby near the surface in order to help it to breathe until it is strong enough to swim on its own. While they are diving for food, however, their young may be unable to follow their parents. This causes a big childcare problem. How to solve it? A babysitter.
Older whales have an active role. They may be aunts or grandmothers (who can live to 100 or more years old) and they may even be members of other families. They patiently take care of the young whales just under the surface of the water, waiting for the feeding mothers to return.
Elephants give new meaning to the phrase: takes a village to raise a child. “The baby has a huge group of mothers. These mothers take turns to watch over each other’s children.” They are called “all mothers”, helping the new born survive by helping its mother. With their help, the mother can get enough food and provide milk for her child. After carrying a nearly 300 pound baby for 22 months, you’d probably need some rest too!
How far would you go to protect your child? Would you starve(饿死)yourself to help it survive?Female Octopuses do. An octopus lays between 50,000 and 200,000 eggs each time. Then she separates the eggs into groups based on their size, shape and possibility of survival. She then spends the next two months of her life protecting them. She is so busy keeping them alive. As a result, she doesn’t even have time to feed herself, so she often ends up dying shortly after her eggs hatch(孵化).
30.In what way is the elephant’s way of child care similar to that of the sperm whale?A.The mother spends 22 months taking care of her baby.
B.Others in the community help the mother take care of her babies.
C.The mother tries to get enough food and provide milk for her child.
D.Older members of the family help the mother take care of her babies.
31.Which is the correct order for a mother octopus to care for her babies?
①She lays her eggs. ②Her eggs hatch. ③She dies of hunger. ④She separates the eggs into groups. ⑤She works hard to keep her eggs alive.
A.①②③④⑤ B.④⑤①②③ C.①④⑤③② D.①④⑤②③
32.What is the best title for the text?
A.Three Kinds of Endangered Animals in the world.
B.Animals that Help and Protect Each Other.
C.Amazing Ways Animals Care for Their Young.
D.The Sperm whales, the Elephants and the Octopuses.
(2022·江苏常州·统考一模)My Antonia
In the morning, when I was fighting my way to school against the wind. I couldn’t see anything but the road in front of me; but in the late afternoon, when I was coming home, the town looked bleak (阴冷荒凉的) to me. The pale, cold light of the winter sunset did not beautify. When the smoky clouds hung low in the west and the red sun went down behind them, the wind rose again with a kind of bitter song, as if it said, “This is reality, whether you like it or not. All the light and shadow (阴影) of summer, the living mask of green, were lies, and this is what was underneath.” It was as if we were being punished for loving the loveliness of summer.
If I walked slowly on the playground after school, or went to the post office for the mail and stopped to hear the gossip (闲言碎语) about the cigar stand, it would be growing dark by the time I came home. The sun was gone, the lights were shining pale in kitchen windows, and I could smell the suppers cooking as I passed. Few people were abroad, and each one of them was hurrying toward a fire. When one passed an old man, one could see nothing of his face but a red nose sticking out between a frosted beard (胡须) and a long plush cap. The young men jumped along with their hands in their pockets and sometimes tried a slide (滑) on the icy sidewalk. The children, in their comforters, never walked but always ran from the moment they left their door, beating their hands against their sides When I got as far as the Methodist Church (堂), I was about halfway home. I can remember how glad I was when there happened to be a light in the church shinning out at us as we came along the frozen street. Without knowing why, we used to walk on the sidewalk outside the church when the lamps were lighted early for choir practice, or prayer-meeting (祷告会), trembling and talking until our feet were like lumps of ice. The crude reds and greens and blues of that colored glass held us there.
33.What does the first paragraph display?
A.The writer’s fight against weather. B.An awful morning in winter.
C.A boring and unpleasant winter. D.The unreal beauty of summer.
34.Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 2?
A.The writer was always free with nothing to do after school.
B.As night fell, people hurried to return home because of hunger.
C.An old man tried a slide on the icy sidewalk when I passed.
D.Children preferred to play outside although it was cold.
35.Why did people enjoy staying under the church light?
A.People admired the beautiful colored lights in the church.
B.The light from the church gave people warmth and comfort.
C.People enjoyed chatting with others to avoid their loneliness.
D.The light outside is bright enough for people’s prayer-meeting.
(2022·江苏常州·统考一模)Travel young, travel far
I’m not a full-time traveler. I spend most days working to make a living just like you do. So whenever I have a chance to visit a far-off country. I always jump at it. When I was studying abroad in New Zealand, I traveled all over the country with two friends. We booked everything from whale watching to a private flight over the Southern Alps, and used up all the money we took. Another international student almost looked down her nose at our pricey adventures(冒险), saying that she had come to New Zealand to study, not to spend all her savings on travel.
My question to her came. Why would you come literally halfway around the world to save your money and keep your nose pressed(压扁的) into a book every weekend? Would you go to China and not visit the Great Wall because it costs money? Would you go to Italy without a visit to the Vatican because it requires a ticket?
I know where I would like my life to go in the coming months and years. But there are no guarantees(保证)that things will go as planned. In fact, nothing will go as planned.
“Oh, I’ll travel when I retire(退休).” “I’ll travel when the kids are grown.” “I’ll travel when the house is paid off.” How often do we hear others say these? I hear these excuses all the time. But you know what happens? Age. And stress. And, well, life. Life happens, and by the time you retire and your kids are grown and your house is paid off, you have bad knees and weak lungs(肺)and you simply can’t visit all those places you dreamed about in your youth. How sad! I don’t want to end up like that, holding on to youthful travel dreams that will never be reality.
So I often think, what if “sometime later” never came?
So, if you are lucky enough to be able to afford to travel, then you should attack it with curiosity and energy and a sense of adventure.
So travel young, and travel far. Never stop dreaming.
At the end of the day, I’d rather die with a million memories than a million dollars. Money won’t comfort me on my deathbed, but knowing that I lived a full and satisfying life might.
36.Why did the writer mention his travel experience in New Zealand?
A.To show his impression of New Zealand. B.To prove his love for travel.
C.To look back on a wonderful experience. D.To attract the readers’ attention.
37.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The uncertainties of future for travel. B.The regrets of missing some journeys.
C.The difficulties of travel in the future. D.The excuses for going travelling.
38.What does the underlined word “attack” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Hurt someone badly. B.Control something completely.
C.Make decisions at once. D.Go travelling at once.
39.What’s the purpose of this article?
A.To show the advantages of travel. B.To tell his own travel experience.
C.To encourage readers to travel young. D.To compare his life with travel.
(2022·江苏常州·统考一模)It’s impossible for my children to read this, which is lucky for me, because it would give them support for the argument(争论)“Can we get a dog, or a cat?” Because the research suggests that having one is good for children.
A study published in JAMA Pediatrics shows that children who had a dog in their first year of life were 13% less likely to develop asthma(哮喘) by the time they were six than those from dog-free families. It is believed that children are more likely to develop allergies(过敏)if they grow up in super-clean environments. This study shows other reasons that increase the risk of asthma, but can still show only an association(联系).
It is reported that 46% of families in the UK have pets, with dogs and then cats the most common animals. The evidence(证据) which shows the advantages of having cats is not always the same, but some research still shows that pets make children healthier. A study of 397 Finnish babies in 2012 found that, during their first year of life, those whose parents had dogs or cats had fewer colds than those from homes without pets. Dogs offered more protection than cats. The researchers think this is because they brought in more dirt from outside to cause the babies’ immune systems(免疫系统)to work well.
The research also shows that having a pet may make children feel more popular and be more understanding.
Pets can also help children to learn about responsibility. Brush the fur, clean the place they sleep, feed them, take more exercise (if you get a dog) and deal with loss — who can forget when their family pet got a car accident?
In a word, keeping pets is really good for improving children’s health and their qualities. However, I still won’t allow my children to keep a pet at home. Second, people are afraid to miss any information. They hope for more useful information which is usually at the hands of experts. (2022·江苏常州·校考一模)The Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games closed on February 20. You must be impressed by this grand gathering and raised great interest in winter sports. In fact, the Olympics might not be successfully held without the “Beijing 2022 snow service team” guided by Qin Dahe.
Beijing, located in a continental monsoon climate zone, is likely to suffer extreme weather during February, which made the protection of snow quality on the track quite important during the Games. However, there were few pieces of research on snow storage in China and abroad. There was a long way to go but Beijing 2022 was coming.
Facing all these difficulties, Dr. Qin took on this task and set up the snow service team in 2017. They used different materials to cover snow and compared the snow amount and snow quality changes under different materials to determine the best plan to prevent the risk of snow use caused by rising temperatures. Wang Xing, one of the team members said, “I cannot remember exactly how many days I spent working in the minus 20℃ weather.”
With great effort, this team made it. They not only reserved the most important technologies but also trained the first graduate students in the snow-related fields. These talents will contribute their power to China’s ice-snow industry development.

(2022·江苏常州·校考一模)“REMOVE from friends.”
This is no ordinary button. One click and I have the power to erase a person from my life.
In late fall, I had around 400 friends on Facebook. Today, I have 134.
Click. Make that 133.
When Facebook first entered my life in 2005, I panicked(恐慌、担心) that my friend count was too low. If I wasn’t properly connected, how would anyone see my clever quote(引语) ?Who would wish me a happy birthday? I accepted and sent out friend requests without a second thought and soon accumulated 391 friends.
There is an appeal to being able to communicate with someone or just “thumbs(拨动手指) up” a photo rather than make real conversation.
“It’s comforting and it’s easy,” said Larry Rosen, a psychology professor at California State University, who studies the way people communicate online.“There’s a sense of belonging in it. It’s a sense of community in a generation where community has sort of (有点)disappeared.”
However, I don’t talk to half of these people in the online community. There are some I would avoid if I met them on the street.
Click. 132.
I decided to rid my account of any “friend” that…well, wasn’t. Sound easy You try it.
Look at who you’re dealing with: family, friends, classmates, crushes(爱恋的对象), acquaintances…
With every click of the “Remove from friends” button, you risk burning a bridge, losing a contact and missing an opportunity. So every time I go to click the button, my heart hurts.
However, I’m not the only one who has experienced a Faceboook friend refreshing. The New Oxford American Dictionary announces its “Word of the Year” each year, and last year, “unfriend” made the cut (入围) (though I’ll still stick with “defriend”).
When I started my mission(任务), a few friends joined. Most were surprised by how easily they could cut hundreds of connections without thinking twice.
“Oh my God, I defriended like 600 people today. I feel so good!” my friend Sarah messaged.
Dana, a close friend from high school, and I battled it out to see who could get our counts lower. She wins at 123.
To some, it’s poor “netiquette(网络礼仪)” to defriend. But to me, it’s the stage of life when we hold onto the people who count, the people who impact you.

Starting from the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan, there are two events in curling (冰壶) —men’s and women’s curling. In curling, teams use brushes and specially-designed shoes to slide stones across the ice towards a goal.

(2022·江苏盐城·统考一模)Natalie Portman, an American actress, won an Oscar. She graduated from Harvard. She has even tried out movie directing. And she brought her first movie to the 6th Beijing Film International Film Festival last month.
However, few people realize that Portman used to have some very different moments, and it happened during her time at Harvard University.
Portman went to Harvard at the age of 18. At the time, she had been acting for seven years and was already famous. But on that famous campus, she nearly lost her confidence.
She thought she could never read 1,000 pages every week or write a 50-page paper. She was shocked by her classmates—they thought that the workload(工作量)was easy to finish, compared with high school.
She started to think that she could only go to Harvard because she was famous. “I felt like every time I open my mouth, I would have to show that I wasn’t just a foolish actress.”

My name is Lucy Razil. I’m a very lucky person because I make my living doing what I love—painting beautiful pictures.
I’ve loved painting for as long as I can remember. I painted my first picture when I was just four. I had a bedroom with walls the color of the summer sky. One day, when Mom wasn’t looking, I gathered up my paint pots and painted a summer scene on one blue wall. I painted myself and my dog Clyde in a meadow filled with flowers. I painted the sun behind a fluffy white cloud.
I was just finishing the painting when Mom walked into my room. Her mouth dropped open and she stood completely still. “I’m in big trouble,” I remember thinking to myself. So I was really surprised when Mom said, “What a beautiful picture, Lucy!” The picture stayed on my bedroom wall and is still there today, nearly 30 years later. I see it every time I go home to visit Mom.
I tell this story because it shows how much Mom supported my love of painting. When I was in school, she cared as much about what I did in art class as what I did in math or reading or science.
She saved all my paintings, and she hung many of them on the walls in our house. She never said, “Painting is a fine hobby, but it’s a hard way to make a living.” Instead, she said, “You are so talented. You’ll be a success. Follow your dream.”
Today I am a success as a painter. I am happy that people love my paintings enough to hang them in their homes. I am proud that some of my paintings hang in museums around the country. Most of all, I am grateful that Mom has always supported me. Much of my success is because of her.
91.Mother felt ________ when she first saw Lucy’s painting on the wall.
A.angry B.surprised C.relaxed D.worried
92.How can we tell that Lucy is a success as a painter?
A.She painted her first painting at the age of 4.
B.Her bedroom painting is still there 30 years later.
C.People love her paintings and hang them in their homes.
D.Her love of painting got much support from her mother.
93.Which of the following best describes Lucy’s mother?
A.Strict but patient. B.Supportive and open-minded.
C.Kind but careless. D.Careful and well-organized.
(2022·江苏苏州·校联考一模)In the workhouse, Oliver soon learnt that the workers were served three meals of thin gruel (稀粥) , with an onion twice a week and half a loaf of bread on Sundays.
The evening arrived, and the boys took their places at the table. The master, in his cooled uniform, stood at the table. His poor helpers were behind him. The boys whispered each other, and encouraged Oliver to ask for more. Oliver decided to take a risk. He rose from the table and went to the master, plate and spoon in hand, said, “please, sir, I want some more.” The helpers were frozen with wonder and the boys with fear.
The master was a fat, healthy man, but he turned very pale. He looked at Oliver in great surprise for some seconds, and nearly fell but for the support to the table. Nobody else spoke.

Every now and then you may see news of satellites(卫星) sent into space. On Feb 21, for example, US company SpaceX took 46 satellites into orbit(轨道). On Feb 27, China sent 22 satellites into space. Why do we need so many satellites? What do they do out there?
At present, there are more than 3,000 active satellites moving around the Earth. Satellites do all kinds of work. They are used to send TV signals, give you directions on the road and help scientists do research.
For example, the 22 satellites China just sent up are part of the Beidou Navigation(导航) Satellite System. Shared bikes that use BeiDou chips(芯片) can be found more easily.
Before satellites, TV signals didn’t go very far. Mountains or tall buildings would block(阻碍) them. Phone calls to faraway places were also a big problem. With satellites, TV signals and phone calls can be sent directly to a satellite and back down to different places on Earth. SpaceX’s Starlink project is trying to go further. It plans to use satellites to provide Internet in the future.
Satellites can also provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They help scientists predict changes in weather and climate. By closely watching wildfires and volcanoes, satellites help people deal with natural disasters. Farmers can use satellite images to decide the best time to water their fields.
Some satellites fly near other planets. They may look for water on Mars or take close-up pictures of other planets. In 2020, video website Bilibili sent a satellite into space. Its job is to look at other planets and share the pictures and videos with Bilibili’s users.
Like any other machines, satellites do not last forever. When they die, they either burn up or become space junk. Someday we may need to send “garbage trucks” to clean them up.
97.What’s the function(作用) of Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic of satellites.
