Question: Are you punctual (守时的)?
Posted on November 29, 2021 by Tina. And then the four girls gave their replies.
I’m punctual in my work life, but not in my personal life. However, it’s OK in my country. We, Brazilians, are always late. For example, if the party is at eight, someone shows up at ten and everyone, including the host, is OK with that.Lisa, Brazil
Of course! My friends and I all believe that showing up late for an appointment (约会) or a class is an insult (冒犯) to the person(s) we are meeting. It seems to say, “My time is more important than yours.”Vera, Switzerland
People around me are always punctual. For me, not only am I punctual, but I am always early for most events in my life. The secret is (and it really works!): I keep all the clocks (except my computer) in my life 10 minutes fast!Wang Meimei, China
For an appointment, I always make sure I’m on time. Once I had a friend who was always late for every meeting. For example, if we made it at 9, it would be a 45-minute trip for her. And then she would arrive at 9:45. I liked her a lot, but I could not stand her unpunctuality.Bud Berlim, Germany
1.If you are two hours late for a Brazilian party, the host will ________.A.not mind B.think you are impolite

A.By taking time to work fast.
B.By asking her friends to remind her.
C.By setting clocks ten minutes ahead.
D.By making sure of keeping the secret.
3.The girls are all very punctual EXCEPT ________.
A.Bud’s friend B.Bud C.Vera’s friend D.Vera
Tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps get the creative juices flowing, but an international new study is challenging that view by putting volunteers through a series of tests.
The study was performed as a joint partnership between psychologists at three universities in Europe. The results suggest that any task that relies on verbal (与文字有关的) creativity was weakened when listening to any type of music.
Subjects (受试者) in the project all spoke English as their first language, and had no problem in their sight or hearing.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, subjects were given three words, such as dress, shine, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word which could be connected with all three to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc).
Subjects completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while they were playing background music with foreign lyrics (歌词), English lyrics, and instrumental music with no lyrics at all.
The research team also tested the library background noises, but found that such noises had no great difference in subjects’ creativity. The study’s authors believe that was the case because library noise is a “steady state” environment which is not as disruptive (扰乱的). Music with or without lyrics is characterized by changes in pitch or tone.
It’s worth mentioning that even familiar music with well-known lyrics weakened subjects’ creativity, even when subjects said that they worked or studied with music on regularly and the music improved their overall mood.
So next time you sit down for a study session with those lo-fi beats, you may be giving your brain something else to focus on rather than your work.
4.What does “that view” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

B.Music helps improve our creativity.
C.Listening to music while working is so common.
D.People enjoy listening to different types of music.
5.According to the word game in Paragraph 4, if volunteers are given three words “foot, base, basket”, what is the single word?
A.case B.ball C.line D.print
6.Which of the following statements does the author probably agree?
A.Library noises are characterized by changes in pitch or tone.
B.Different kinds of music impair different parts of our brains.
C.You may do your work better without listening to music.
D.Music cannot disrupt the verbal working memory of the disabled.
Jeremiah hurried into the kitchen and washed his hands. He had exactly one hour until his father got home. He wasn’t used to starting dinner this early. On his nights to cook, Jeremiah generally got dinner ready in fifteen minutes. But Dad always praised Jeremiah’s meals, no matter how simple they were. “Delicious!” he would say. But Jeremiah knew Dad liked more complicated (复杂的) dishes, because on Dad’s nights to cook, he used a ton of ingredients. Dad was a natural cook. Not Jeremiah-at least, not until tonight.
It was Dad’s birthday, and for once in his life, Jeremiah was cooking something complicated: spaghetti with homemade sauce (酱). He’d eaten it a million times, so he knew most of the ingredients. “Tomatoes, onions, garlic, beef,” he thought, looking through the fridge. They had everything except the beef. No problem—they’d go vegetarian tonight.
Jeremiah cut up the vegetables with Dad’s special knife and put them into the pot. Then he turned to Dad’s spice(香料) collection. He picked a few familiar ones and put them in. The pleasing smell of fresh tomatoes amazed him. He tasted it just as Dad usually did. It was terrible! Way too spicy. Aha! A lime would cool things down. He added in as much lime juice as he could. One more taste. Ugh. It was awful! Now the sauce was sour and spicy.
He left the kitchen and went into his room. He could at least order pizza, so Dad wouldn’t have to stay hungry on his own birthday. As he counted his money, he heard the front door open.
“Hi, Jeremiah!” Dad called.
“Coming.”
Jeremiah returned to the kitchen, where he found Dad digging through the food cupboard. “I’m buying pizza,” Jeremiah said. “It’s not much of a birthday dinner...”
Dad turned, holding a bag of chips and a bowl of Jeremiah’s spaghetti sauce. “We don’t need pizza!” Dad smiled. “This delicious salsa(萨尔萨辣酱) is a meal in itself!”
7.Why did Jeremiah decide to cook something complicated?
A.Because he arrived home early.
B.Because his dad told him to do so.
C.Because it was his dad’s birthday.
D.Because he was a natural cook.
8.Jeremiah thought the sauce he made was ________.
A.neither sour nor spicy enough B.different from what he had expected
C.tasted awful without beef D.as delicious as he had imagined
9.What can we learn about Jeremiah’s father?
A.He pays no attention to his food. B.He is creative and strict.
C.He expects his son to be skillful. D.He is loving and encouraging.
I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success? Winning is really, really fun. But I am here to share my views on what a real success is.
All around the world, we have created the win-at-all-cost cultures. As a society, we honor the champions. We cheer for those people who win championships, elections and awards. Winning at all costs has become acceptable. We have become so focused on that end result instead of the process, and particularly when the end result is a win, usually how we got there often gets swept under the proverbial rug.
We need to redefine (重新定义) success. Real success is developing champions in life for our world, win or
lose. We may be able to plan our way to a win, but we can’t plan our way to success.
Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women’s Gymnastics Team, the best I could do was what other “successful” coaches had done. So, I became tough-talking and mean. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win.
After putting up with me for a few years, our team asked me for a team meeting. And for over two hours, they gave me examples of how my arrogance ( 傲 慢 ) was hurtful. That was my time-out, and I chose to change. I realized that I needed to support our student athletes as whole human beings, not just athletes who won.
It is so much easier to give orders than to actually figure out how to motivate (激励) someone to be better. And the motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key ingredient was to develop trust through patience and honesty.
Let’s think about what you are talking with your parents on the car ride home. Are they focusing on the end result? Are you excited to use that time to show you are a winner? All of you care too much about the end result instead of your steps of learning.
We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world.
That is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.
10.The underlined phrase “gets swept under the proverbial rug” probably means “________”.
A.catches little attention B.does some harm
C.shows the result D.decides the success
11.The writer mentions his experience as the head coach to show________.
A.it’s difficult to teach athletes how to win
B.how his team won those championships
C.why his team asked him for a meeting
D.motivating others matters more than giving orders
12.Which of the following is a real success according to the writer?
A.A kid who shows the medals and prizes he won to his parents.
B.A player who tries to win a gold medal at the cost of his health.
C.A coach who respects his members even though the team didn’t win.
D.A parent who keeps asking about the grades his kid gets in the exams.
A special Boeing 777 Freighter provided by FedEx was taking the panda, Bei Bei, and the two of the zoo’s staff members – a panda keeper and a doctor—nonstop from Washington to Chengdu.
During the trip, he was provided with a supply of his treats including bamboo, apples, pears, carrots, cooked sweet potatoes.
Before he left Washington, thousands of people joined ‘Bye Bye, Bei Bei’. During the activity, many people were sad for Bei Bei’s leaving. They hoped he would love his new home in China, and they hoped to visit him there some day.
Su, Bei Bei’s new keeper in China, who majored in animal medicine at Jilin Agricultural Science and Technology University, has worked at the base since she completed her university in 2016. “I feel very nervous when I receive the task because Bei Bei has received a lot of attention. But I think I can do well as I had a lot of experience in panda management,” Su said. “I have taken care of about10 pandas before.”
Su said she had prepared a lot for his arrival. She has planned to spend two weeks allowing Bei Bei to get to know her voice. She will also train him how to stand and sit. “Pandas like sweet food. Bei Bei has been rewarded with sugarcane after cooperating in a physical checkup, for example, after he has placed one leg on equipment to enable blood to be drawn,” Su said. “Instead of sugarcane, we will feed Bei Bei with honey as a reward,” she added.
Her daily routine includes cleaning his den and feeding the panda four times during the daytime. At night, Bei Bei may wake two or three times to eat and then fall asleep, so Su will set up an app on her phone to monitor him.
Pandas are native to Chengdu. So we believe that Bei Bei will get used to living here quickly.

In ancient times, China had ten famous swords. Some of them really appeared in history, while some are the products of people’s imagination.
Chun Jun
Chun Jun was owned by Gou Jian, the King of the Yue State in the Spring and Auturnn Period. According to Lost History of Yue, Gou Jian once invited Xue Zhu to appreciate(鉴赏) some valuable swords. Of all the swords presented to him, Xue appreciated only Chun Jun. He advised the King not to exchange this sword with others even for a combination(组合)of a thousand good horses, three rich towns and two big cities, because it was a creation of Man and Heaven(苍天). Today the sword is kept in the Hubei Provincial Museum.
Yu Chang
Yu Chang was a sword of bravery. According to Shiji, one day King Liao of the Wu State was enjoying some food served by Zhuan Zhu, a cook trying to kill the King. Before he heard an eagle(鹰)flying down to him, Yu Chang came out from the fish he was going to eat. With the sword, Zhuan Zhu wasted no time in pointing it at King Liao. Although Liao’s well-trained guards tried to protect him, the sword still reached him and stabbed(刺)into his heart.
Zhan Lu
Zhan Lu was more like a pair of eyes than a sword. Black in color, the long, unmarked sword gave a sense of kindness, rather than sharpness(锋利). Like Heaven’s eyes, the sword watched the behavior of kings. If the king had moral integrity(骨气), the sword would be with him and his country would be rich and strong; otherwise, the sword would leave him and his country would fall apart.
Cheng Ying
It is said that Cheng Ying was a long sword without a blade(刀片). Strangely enough, it projected a shadow(投射阴影)upon the wall in the morning or the evening when the change between daylight and darkness came. For the first time the princess smiled at Abanazar.
“Why not?” she said. “You are a rich man and I am happy here. Yes, let’s drink to that.”
And she gave him a tall gold cup with the drink and powder(粉末)in it.
“Let’s drink from one cup, Abanazar.” she smiled at him. “You first, then me. In my country new husbands and wives always do this.”
“To Badr-al-Budur, the most beautiful woman in Morocco,” Abanazar said happily, “and my wife.”

The interesting game was still in my head, but there was something more urgent to be done. I had to attend a conference 10 minutes later! Plenty of time. I got up slowly and spread out my arms and legs. I put on the VR glasses and sat myself down in a comfortable position. With five minutes to go, I still had time to calm myself and gather my mind. I looked at the bottom of the screen. Umm, it’s October 27th, 2031.

When I was well grown, at last, I was sold and taken away, and I never saw my mother again. She was broken-hearted and so was I, and we cried. But she comforted me as well as she could, saying that we were sent into this world for a wise and good purpose, and that we must do our duties(职责) without complaining. She said we should treat our life as we might find it, live it for the good of others, and never mind about the results; they were not our business. She said humans who did like this would have a noble(光荣的) and beautiful reward in another world. And although we dogs would not go there, to do well and right without rewards would give our short lives worth and dignity(尊严), which in itself would be a reward.
She had gathered these things from time to time when she went to the Sunday-school with her children, and had laid those words and phrases up in her memory more carefully than ever. And she had studied them deeply, for her good and ours. One may see from this that she had a wise and thoughtful head, but for all there was so much lightness in it.
So we said our farewells(再见), and looked at each other through our tears for the last time. And the last thing she said, keeping it for the last to make me remember it better, I think, was, “In memory for me, when there is a time of danger to others, do not think of yourself; think of your mother, and do as she would do.”

English is widely spoken and taught in over 118 countries and is commonly used around the world as a trade language. So, learning English helps you communicate with almost the whole world.
When learning English, you may meet a lot of problems. Now you find a pie chart about it.
31.How many expected difficulties are mentioned in this pie chart?

Learning a new language is never an easy thing. Now you are reading someone’s language learning experience.
Learning new things is always a challenge for human beings. I have experienced a hard time to learn a foreign language in the very beginning. But after practicing hard and watching how people talk, I am doing better day by day.
I got afraid when I was going to enter Thompson Rivers University in Canada, which was far away from my country with totally a new culture and new people. I became nervous because I had no experience of making myself comfortable in a whole new place, language and culture in a short time.
After landing in Canada, I’ve started facing a lot of problems that I knew I would have to face from the very beginning. But what I didn’t know was how to fix them. It was not easy for me to communicate with people because I wasn’t used to the accent(口音)in Canada. As Canada’s first language is English, they have a natural way of accent which sounds like a bird singing a nice song. They use different intonations(语调)and stresses from my mother language. Also because my vocabulary wasn’t so rich, I had problems talking with people around me. Moreover, I was afraid of making mistakes.
When I first came to the university, I met many international students and introduced our Bengali(孟加拉的)culture to them. In return, I also gathered information about their cultures and traditions. I started watching people about how they talk, including their expressions, intonations, stresses, vocabularies as well as how they use phrases in their conversation. I started to talk in English with my friends. Those long conversations made me confident. Though I was making a lot of mistakes while talking, I did not give up for a single moment. I kept practicing more to get comfortable with everything I needed day by day. Especially the professors and teachers guided me a lot to be better at English.
From all this, I have learned an important lesson that nothing is impossible. To achieve a goal, all you need to do is working hard, practicing and not feeling shy when you’re making a mistake. I am learning a lot by making lots of mistakes. Now mistakes don’t trouble me anyway.

d. The writer didn’t have enough vocabulary to communicate with others.
A.abc B.bcd C.acd D.abd
35.The writer used the underlined part “sounds like a bird singing a nice song” to _________.
A.show Canadians like singing beautiful songs
B.express Canadians have a natural way of accent
C.prove why the writer had problems singing songs
D.tell his mother language has special intonation and stress
36.According to the writer, _________.
A.nothing can be achieved without the professors’ and teachers’ help
B.giving up for a short while is of some help to learn difficult things
C.working hard is the only thing we need to do to achieve a goal
D.we shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes when learning
To remember vocabularies drives a lot of students mad. Are there any useful methods to do it better? Here is a passage for you to read and learn.
Stay up late doing exercises, remembering every grammar rule and reading all English articles you’ve learned again and again... Are these the ways you learn English? The bad news is that this method may do you little good. But the good news is that there are better ways to build your English vocabulary.
·Learn a new English word every day
If you’re not sure where to start, try making cards of the most commonly used words. Another way to build up your English vocabulary is reading. If you like reading about travel, pets or food, read about these topics in English. Look for English newspapers or magazines about your favorite subjects or visit websites or blogs about these topics. Read a few articles each morning, and circle new words. If you like watching movies, pick one and start watching. If you’re afraid you won’t understand everything, you can always watch them with subtitles. Once you’re confident in your English listening skills, try watching movies without subtitles.
·Don’t forget to record new words in a vocabulary notebook
Whenever you come across a new word, write it down. Many English language learners carry a notebook for this purpose. Keep the notebook and a pen at hand. Then, you’ll have something to review while traveling or taking a break.
·Vocabulary learning system
Another thing to do is to develop an organized but easy way of collecting and learning new words. For example, a card system should include the following information,
*Word
*English meaning of the word
*Phrases or sentences
*Related words
*Words of similar meanings and words of opposite meanings
*Chinese meaning on the back of the card

It is found that people understand and remember facts better if they are given in logical(合逻辑的) groups. For example, it is less difficult to remember words that are related to each other than those unrelated ones. Creating lists of words related to common themes–such as friendship, family, wealth, careers, sciences–will be much easier to learn and remember than collecting words according to their first letters.
37.In Paragraph 1, the writer introduces the topic by _________.

B.listing the problems that students have when learning
C.presenting a few questions that students want to ask
D.telling a funny story of language learning experience
38.The underlined word “subtitles” means _________.
A.names of books, magazines, or other published works
B.translations of foreign films shown at the bottom of the screen
C.second titles which are often longer and explain more
D.names that describe people’s social positions or jobs
39.Which of the following sentence is the most suitable one to be put in the ▲ ?
A.Understand and remember facts better B.Collect words by theme or subject
C.Remember a list of unrelated words D.Divide words according to their first letters
40.In which order is the passage written?
A.Time order. B.Space order. C.From specific to general. D.From general to specific.
The world is getting smaller and smaller, so in order to communicate properly in a foreign language, you should also know more about body language.
Have you ever watched a silent film and tried to guess what the characters were saying? Body language, like facial expressions, is the mirror of a person’s feelings. It helps us communicate without saying much at all.
Sometimes we can share the common sense from culture to culture. Turning red-faced shows one’s anger, shock, or excitement. The wide eyes with a half-opened mouth mean surprise. Also, some other body movements can express the same meanings in different cultures. For example, being back in one’s seat and yawning at a talk show people are not interested, and looking at the watch from time to time in a conversation means people have something to do in a hurry.
However, not all body languages can show the same meanings in different cultures. What holds true for Indians may not be the same in Africa. First of all, in some cultures, people respect and encourage the direct eye contact. In English, there is a saying, “Don’t trust anyone who won’t look at you in the eye.” In many countries, direct eye contact between two people is considered important. According to most Western cultures, if a person looks directly at you, it is a sign that the person is honest and sincere and even can be trusted. While many cultures believe that direct eye contact from a child to an adult is an act of disrespect.
The OK sign, which is commonly used in many cultures, also has different meanings across the cultures. It means agreement in North American culture. But to French, it means “zero” or “valueless”, not “fine” or “OK”.
Touching is another example. At times, saying hello could turn into a disaster if one does not consider the use of touch in another culture. A general and accepted way of saying “Hello” in Western culture is a simple handshake. A great deal of importance has been placed on how one should shake hands. In India, however, if the same is done to greet the elderly, perhaps those in their 60s, you might express that you’re calling yourself their equal. What’s more, the ideal way to greet someone in India is by touching their feet, not by shaking their hands.

Tall buildings, criss-crossed roads, huge crowds...When we talk about cities, such words might come to mind. However, cities can be different. They can be sweet homes for both people and animals. Here are three exciting and creative examples.
Vertical forests in Milan
In the centre of Milan city, there are “vertical(垂直的) forests”! Green plants cover two tall buildings. One is 110 metres tall, while the other is 76 metres. The area these plants cover is the same as 30,000 square metres of woodland. The forests opened in 2014.What makes the forests? The answer is 800 trees, 15,000 ground-cover plants and 5,000 shrubs. People plant them in big tubs on large balconies. They attract 1,600 kinds of birds and butterflies. Gardeners often trim the plants in order that people can see clearly out of the windows with them.
Wuhan, the “sponge city”
Sponge (海绵) absorbs water. “Sponge city” absorbs rainwater. In 2015, Wuhan started to build a “sponge city”, one of the first cities to do so in China. In the city, water can pass through the pavements (人行道). There are also gardens, ponds and wetlands all over the city. When it rains, they can absorb water. So there will be less flooding. By the end of last year, 20 percent of the city’s area reached the standard of a “sponge city”. In 2030, the area will reach 80 percent.
Living with caracals
in Cape Town
Caracals live in many nature reserves, gardens and vineyards in Cape Town, South Africa. They are the last large predator(食肉动物) there. However, they live in danger. As much as 70 percent of their deaths are because they get hit by cars.To save caracals, people started a project. They catch and mark the cats, and give the cats radio collars to tell where they go. After locating roadkill places, people invite an artist to make artworks and put them nearby. The art helps people remember to drive slowly and take care of the cats. There are also caracal road signs. All of these have caught the interest of people in Cape Town.

“Welcome to China!”
This simple greeting from volunteer Sun Zeyu warmed the heart of US snowboarder Tessa Maud at the Olympics opening ceremony(开幕式). “That guy who has said ‘Welcome to China’ literally just makes me tear up every time because they [volunteers] are so nice. We feel so welcomed,” said Maud in the video she shared on TikTok.
Sun, a junior student from Tsinghua University, is an example of how Generation Z (people born between 1995 and 2010) promoted(促进) cultural and people-to-people exchanges at the Beijing Winter Games. Active and open-minded, they bridge gaps in their own ways. Their pleasant personalities, global vision and new-age thinking made the Games even more fantastic.
① Gen Z athletes shared their China travels on social media(媒体). Some became big fans of Chinese food. Maud shared what she ate every day on TikTok——fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and Peking duck. What to eat each day was a hard choice for her. “Everything is so good,” she said.

Have you ever been bored and decided to check social media, only to find out that your best friend was at Disneyland, that one of your classmates was eating delicious pizza at your favourite pizza store, or that one of your soccer teammates was climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris? Have you ever had that feeling that others were experiencing things and enjoying life more than you were? Oh man! You were really missing out! At least that’s what you might think. Researchers call that feeling FOMO—the fear of missing out.
Over 75% of young people report feelings about FOMO from time to time. It’s so easy today to see what your friends are doing, eating, buying or talking about from the social media. Unluckily, we have only so much time in the day and only so much money to spend on food or entertainment. It would be impossible to enjoy all the same activities we see others take part in on social media.
Rather than realizing this basic truth, though, we usually let FOMO lead us to compare our lives with those of others on social media. This certainly leaves us feeling dissatisfied. Why? We know all the sides of our lives—both good and bad. But all we see on social media are the picture-perfect moments others shared.
As Theodore Roosevelt famously said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” FOMO makes us check social media more often, leading to addiction(瘾) and a negative(消极的) cycle that can be hard to break. Researchers have found that social media and FOMO can cause serious negative results, including feelings of depression, loneliness and boredom.
So how do we break the cycle and avoid FOMO? Researchers suggest that we stop looking to social media for happiness. Instead, we should focus our attention on our real lives, including the people around us and all the things we’re grateful for.

55.What does the underlined word “This” in the third paragraph refer to?
A.Comparing our lives with others’. B.Knowing all the sides of our lives.
C.Realizing the basic truth about FOMO. D.Sharing the picture-perfect moments.
56.What do the researchers advise us to do according to the passage?
A.Try to do what we love. B.Take an active part in social activities.
C.Value what we have got. D.Learn to make a reasonable comparison.
By now the dragon realized that my father was coming to rescue him. He ran out of the bushes and jumped up and down, shouting, “I’m right here! Can you see me? Hurry! The wild pig is coming over on the crocodiles, too. They’re all coming over! Oh, please, hurry!” The noise was simply excellent.
My father ran up to the dragon, and took out his very sharp jackknife. “Watch out, old boy! We’ll make it. Just stand still,” he told the dragon as he began to cut through the big rope.
By this time both wild pigs, all seven tigers, the two lions, the gorilla and the rhinos, along with the countless monkeys, were all on their way across the crocodiles and there was still a lot of rope to cut through.
“Oh, hurry,” the dragon kept saying, and my father again told him to stand still.
“If I don’t think I can make it,” said my father, “we’ll fly over to the other side of the river and I can finish cutting the rope there.”
Suddenly the scream grew louder and madder, and my father thought the animals must have crossed the river. He looked around and saw something that made him surprised and delighted. Partly because he had finished his lollipop(棒棒糖), and partly because, as I told you before, crocodiles are very changeable and not dependable at all and are always looking for something to eat, the first crocodile had turned away from the bank and started swimming down the river. The second crocodile hadn’t finished yet, so he followed right the first, still sucking(吮吸) his lollipop. All the rest did the same thing. The two wild pigs, the seven tigers, the rhinos, the two lions, the gorilla, along with the countless monkeys, were all riding down the middle of the river on the train of crocodiles sucking pink lollipops, and all were screaming and getting their feet wet.
My father and the dragon laughed because it was such a silly sight. As soon as they had recovered, my father finished cutting the rope and the dragon raced around in circles and tried to turn a somersault(跟头). My father was in a hurry to fly away, and when the dragon finally calmed down a bit my father climbed up onto his back.
“All aboard!” said the dragon. “Where shall we go?”
“We’ll spend the night on the beach, and tomorrow we’ll start on the long journey home. So, we’ll leave the shore of Tangerina!” shouted my father as the dragon rose above the dark forest and the muddy river and all the animals shouting at them and all the crocodiles sucking pink lollipops.
As my father and the dragon passed over the Ocean Rocks, they heard a tiny excited voice scream. “Bum cack! I mean, we need our dragon!”
But my father and the dragon knew that nothing in the world would ever make them go back to Wild Island.

Lu Canglong, a post-90s born in Lishui, Zhejiang Province, invented the “cloud-maker” profession after getting inspiration (灵感) from clouds. In 2015, Lu was shocked when he happened to see a large evening cloud above his head.
“That was a fantastic cloud. It seemed to burn the sky,” said Lu. “So I wanted to keep it!”
How to keep the beautiful moment became a problem for him. Lu took a picture of the clouds and simulated (仿造) them and then stored them in a clear cube (立方体). Such simulated clouds have become popular among his fans.
In 2019, Lu decided to give up his work because his spare time wasn’t enough to make enough clouds to meet the increasing need. In the winter of 2019, he opened his online store “Sky Fair” on Taobao. In 2020 alone, he sold over 200, 000 “clouds” to more than 40, 000 people across China, and sales reached more than 1 million yuan.
Apart from cloud-makers, other creative professions have also appeared across China. Wen Chenhua is an armorsmith (铸甲师). He made his first armor in 2012. It was a Song-Dynasty style fish-scale armor weighing 30 kilos. He hoped to sell for 50, 000 yuan. But the customer offered 1.5 times price. Wen opened his Taobao store in 2014. His yearly sales are around 6 million yuan now.
As of August 2021, there were at least 200, 000 creative culture shops on Taobao. Around 77 percent of these businesses were operated (经营) by people younger than 30.
Thanks to the huge population of Chinese customers as well as the massive (巨大的) sales on online shopping platforms, many new businesses and services are now able to thrive. That brings huge money to these businessmen.
“In the age of the Internet, more and more people are able to take up a profession in which their interest lies,” an industry insider said.

Dubai is home to the world’s tallest building and the world’s largest mall. Now it has just opened another record-breaking place—the deepest diving pool in the world. As part of the new Deep Dive Dubai, the pool is 60 meters deep. It has broken the record set by Poland’s Deepspot, which is over 45 meters.
The Deep Dive Dubai pool is filled with 14 million liters (升) of fresh water and is five times bigger than an Olympic swimming pool. Guinness (吉尼斯) gave it the “Deepest Swimming Pool for Diving” title on June 27, 2021. The pool is now open only to invited guests, but will open to the public later this year.
The indoor pool is housed inside a 1, 500-square-meter oyster-shaped (牡蛎形的) building. But the biggest star of Deep Dive Dubai is actually the pool’s underwater city. Divers can visit the lost city apartments and play underwater table football. The pool is also used as an underwater film-making factory—the largest of its kind in the area.
Deep Dive Dubai offers courses for both diving beginners and experienced divers. They can also visit the pool and the underwater city by themselves after a tour with one of the diving guides there. Some cameras have been fixed around the pool to ensure (确保) the safety of divers at every corner.
The oyster-shaped building also has a restaurant with large windows and TV screens, allowing non-diving families and friends to watch from dry land.

It’s hard to turn down junk food. However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you’re between the ages of 10 and 19.
“Junk food shapes adolescent (青春期的) brains in ways that impair (损害) their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control impulsive (冲动的) behaviors,” said Amy Reichelt, a brain and nutrition specialist at Western University, Canada.
Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies about how poor food choices can affect adolescent brains. They found adolescents are more sensitive than any other age group to foods with a lot of fat and sugar, as their brains are not yet fully formed.
Adolescent brains are still developing the ability to control themselves. The prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) is the part of the brain that helps us do this. However, this region doesn’t fully develop until we are in our early 20s.
Meanwhile, teen brains get more excited from rewards. The parts of the brain that make us feel good when we eat junk food are fully developed by the teen years. In fact, these regions are even more sensitive (敏感的) when we are young. Therefore, the teen brain has two strikes (攻击) against it when it comes to turning down junk food.
Reichelt and her team conducted their own study using mice, whose brains develop much like our own. They discovered that “teenage” mice that had a high-fat diet performed worse on memory tests than those eating a normal diet.
So, what’s the best way to say no to junk food? Researchers suggest exercise. When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food cues (暗示). Exercise also helps our brains grow and become better able to make smart decisions.
75.The second paragraph is written to ________.

C.explain how junk food can harm teen brains D.show how food helps human brains develop
76.According to the study, why is it hard for young people to turn down junk food?
A.Because they are more sensitive to the joy junk food offers.
B.Because their brains are fully developed.
C.Because they need energy for their development.
D.Because they have a low level of excitement in their brains.
77.According to the researchers, how can exercise help us refuse junk food?
A.It makes the brain’s reward system more sensitive. B.It reduces the brain’s strong wish for junk food.
C.It helps humans make quick decisions. D.It slows down the brains’ activity.
78.What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Say no to junk food B.Less developed adolescent brains
C.Two strikes against junk food D.Control impulsive behaviors

“Well, we could use some hot dogs.” I was at the local charity food pantry (分发处) on a cold morning. They had an old shop besides it where I would sometimes stop to pick up a sweatshirt or a book for my sons. Sometimes I would also step back into the food pantry and ask if they needed anything. I got help from food pantries when I was a young father with a hungry family. Now, I like to give back.
This time I could see that most of the shelves were stocked with boxes and cans donated by stores. One thing they said they needed was meat, however, hot dogs were cheap and I didn’t mind getting some. I soon went to the local grocery store and filled my car with all the hot dogs I could afford.
As I was paying for them, I thought of my own childhood. I could see my mom boiling two hot dogs in a pot. Next she put each one on a slice of white bread with a piece of cheese. To top it off she would add a little tomato sauce. It didn’t cost much but to me it was a feast (盛宴), cooked with love, eaten with joy.
That memory warmed my heart as I dropped off the hot dogs at the food pantry. It felt good knowing that some other little boy or girl out there would soon be having a happy lunch. I left the pantry with a smile on my face. And as I walked to my car, I could feel my mom smiling down on me from heaven.
The truth is that, when done with love, giving and receiving are the same thing. It all comes back around again.

Nowadays, one of the great challenges of caring for children is the roadblock(路障)caused by the learner driver. Your child is almost an adult, but just before the last step, you need to spend 120 of the most stressed hours of your life locked I with them in a car, their teenage hands behind the wheel. You know the phrase behind the wheel? It means driving.
___①___ When I decided to teach my first child to drive, I was nervous. I’m not a natural teacher, as I am easily bored and quickly get angry. Worse, I’m not a natural driver. I even failed to get a license at the first time. I can get from A to B without too much trouble, but once I get there, I’m likely to drive into a wall while parking.
___②___ Happily, my first child was a fast, hard-working learner, and always keeping an eye on traffic signs. Still, there were enough small mistakes. And by the time it was his younger sister’s turn, my nerves were already shot. My daughter was bright and talented, but on the roads, it seemed that she was just out of control. Even after hours of professional driving lessons, her every move behind the wheel is fresh and unexpected. Even after 40 hours of driving, mistakes happen at times. We will be driving along beautifully for 30 minutes, and once I begin to relax, my daughter will sail through a red light.
___③___ Even if she passes her test, who can be sure that she won’t forget the next red light as soon as she’s out there on her own? One of my friends has refused to teach her daughter to drive as she is “just not responsible enough” to be on the road. A middle-aged friend of mine gave up trying to get his license after the eighth failure.
___④___ We often think that everyone should drive, but perhaps there are some people who just shouldn’t be behind a wheel. What if my daughter is one of them? Well, I don’t know. At least not yet. If it’s the end of the world, maybe we can stop driving lessons for a while?
87.Why does the author mention her own driving story in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain what makes a good driver.
B.To explain why her children couldn’t drive well.
C.To explain why learner drivers cause roadblock.
D.To explain why she was worrying about teaching driving.
88.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A.the author was pleased B.the author was nervous
C.the author was relaxed D.the author was expected
89.“As much as I expect her to have a license, I find myself wondering if it’s a good idea.” can be put in ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
90.The author would probably ________ in the following days.
A.continue to teach her daughter to drive

When you look at the night sky, what you see are actually lots of “power plants”. Every star can make a huge amount of energy through nuclear fusion (核聚变). For years, scientists have tried to make this kind of energy. They need to make a “mini star” on Earth. Recently, some scientists made a big step forward.
In February, the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire, UK, doubled a world record made in 1997. The machine there, named Jet, used fusion engines(发动机)to make the same amount of energy as four wind turbines(涡轮机)make, reported The Guardian.
In the past, no experiment could make more energy than what was used to start the fusion engine. This new experiment, although only lasting five seconds, showed it’s possible to make more power.
The reaction stopped when the equipment got too hot. This problem can be solved with cooling systems. Future fusion reactions may last much longer than five seconds, minutes or even hours.
Why do we care so much about star power? Fusion reactions would provide power for everyone on Earth—enough for everyone to use for thousands or millions of years. They’re also clean—they don’t produce pollutions.
You may wonder why fusion energy is so hard to make. Creating conditions similar to a star is not easy. The machine must reach temperatures as high as 10 times that of the sun.
Even so, it’s time to get excited about star power.
92.What does “power plants” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指)?
A.fusion engines B.stars in the sky C.nuclear plants D.mini stars on Earth
93.The machine that made the new record can produce as much energy as ________.

C.Creating a warmer environment D.Keeping the equipment hot
95.The purpose of Paragraph 5 is mainly to talk about ________.
A.the way to find cleaner power B.the amount of energy inside a star
C.the advantages of fusion reactions D.the difficulty in making fusion energy
96.Which information can we infer from the passage?
A.It is not very difficult to make fusion energy on the Earth.
B.It has been common to use fusion energy in our everyday life.
C.It is impossible to make more power than before by the new experiment.
D.It will be a landmark in history if fusion energy can be successfully carried out.

She got up early to be ready for the post. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course, Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor (市长), and Myra herself had got a medal for her work for the aged. The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed pleased to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school. One evening, Enid said, “I’ve arranged for Mrs Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital—just a small operation, I’ll soon be home.” In the morning she went, but never came back—she died on the operating table.
Two years ago that was, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never. The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps—Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited—like a child. She would enjoy her day.
What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new blue sweater. Blue’s such a pretty colour. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.
She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra’s writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment. “No parcel (包裹), sir?”
“No, madam.”
Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.
She tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday—Buy yourself something nice with the cheque (支票), Myra and Harold.
The cheque fell to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers, she tore it into little bits.

A.The best gift for Mom B.Mother’s love C.A meaningful cheque D.Trembling fingers
Looking for a sport that tests both your brains and your brawn (强壮的肌肉)? Look no further than chess boxing, which is exactly what its name sounds like. Players have to overcome at least one of two obstacles (障碍): they must win at a game of chess or win the boxing match. To win at chess, they must do one of two things: achieve a checkmate or cause the other player to run out of time when making his or her chess moves. To win at boxing, a player must knock out the other player or get a technical knockout.
Does this sound both crazy and exciting? It is. Chess boxing is all about being able to take punches while still keeping one’s wits. The matches start out with a round of chess, which lasts a total of four minutes. The opponents play speed chess, which is a style in which the players only get a set amount of time to make their moves. In chess boxing, the players get a total of 12 minutes each to make all of their chess moves. If they use up their time, they lose the chess boxing match.
After the first round of chess, the boxers get in the ring from a round of boxing which lasts three minutes. Assuming (如果) there is no knockout blow, at the end of the round the two contenders (竞争者) sit down and continue their game of chess. There are a total of six rounds of chess and five rounds of boxing, so the back and forth between the mental and physical aspects of the game make it one of the more interesting game and sport combinations.
103.How long does each chess round last?
A.Three minutes. B.Four minutes. C.Six minutes. D.Twelve minutes.
104.Which of the following is FALSE?
A.Chess boxing requires both thinking and fighting.
B.Each chess boxer gets twelve minutes total for making chess moves.
C.There can be up to five rounds of boxing in a chess boxing match.
D.There are five rounds of chess in a chess boxing match.
105.What can we infer about chess boxing from the passage?
A.A match can be won without any boxing taking place.
B.The chess part is much more important than the boxing part.
C.Good chess player are unlikely to be good boxer.
D.The fighting in chess boxing is less violent than standard boxing.
When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him, as his parents always had him do some housework or do some part-time jobs. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood friends. He had a better career, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study. Researchers followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who worked when they were young enjoyed happier and more successful lives than those who did not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were useful members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them, too.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males all these years. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and the ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men once did as young boys and how they turned out as adults was very sharp. Those who did the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with other people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class (社会和经济阶层) made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working-at any age-is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence-the basis (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must work with others towards common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstory once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
106.Which of the following is TRUE about John?
A.He liked doing part-time jobs. B.He enjoyed his career and marriage.
C.He received little love from his family. D.He had few friends when he was a child.
107.According to Vaillant, why could John be better off than this childhood friends?
A.Because he did part-time jobs after work.
B.Because he felt proud of himself when working.
C.Because his working experience in his childhood was of help.
D.Because he was happier than his friends when they were young.
108.How did Vaillant and his team get the findings of the research?
A.By comparing different sets of scores. B.By checking the men’s mental health.
C.By recording the boy’s effort in school. D.By testing the men’s problem-solving ability.
109.The purpose of the passage is to tell us that ___________.
A.IQ plays an important role in people’s development
B.social and economic class decides how our career goes
C.only working at a young age is important to our adult life
D.the ability of working with others towards goals is very important

The Snohomish people have lived in Washington State for a long time. They were known for hunting elks. The elsk gave them meat for food. They made clothing from elk skin. They made tools, weapons, and art from elk antlers. The elks were very important to the Snohomish. Elks even became part of a constellation(星座). The tale below tells how that happened. It explains what the Snohomish saw overhead in the night sky.
The Snohomish say the God went from east to west and gave people languages to let the people speak. The God stopped when he reached the land of the Snohomish. There he left his leftover languages! There were too many languages! No one could understand anyone. The people were unhappy.
They were unhappy for other things. People bumped their heads on the stars because the God had not made the sky high enough. The sky was not easy to get around(绕开) either.
The people planned to push up the sky. Since they spoke different languages, they decided to use ya-hoh as a signal to start pushing. People used tall trees to make poles. They pushed and poked(捅) at the sky with their poles when hearing ya-hoh. They pushed so hard that they lifted the sky!
While everyone else was pushing, three hunters were chasing four elks. These hunters had been away while the plan had been explained. Just when the pushing started, the four elks reached a place where the sky touched the earth. The elks raced into the sky. The hunters followed! The elks and the hunters wanted to return from the sky. It was too late! They were trapped in the sky. After a while they became stars. People call these seven stars the Big Dipper(北斗七星).
The stars in the sky seem to move when you look at them. People make constellations by drawing imaginary lines between stars and people have imagined stories about the stars. The Big Dipper is a set of stars. It has many names and stories. The Snohomish people call it the Elk Hunters.

“Were the birds on the ice ducks or geese (鹅)?” Cruz, 11, and Anthony, 12, couldn’t agree. There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening, the two friends took a risk onto the frozen lake near their homes.
“First, we threw a stone onto the ice to test it. We thought it would hold our weight. Then we stepped on it,” Cruz said. Anthony went first. He took a few steps, then... He fell through the seemingly frozen ice!
Cruz rushed to help his friend. The lake “ate” him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the freezing water and onto some ice. He then tried to work his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn’t hold, and he fell in again. This time, he couldn’t get out.
The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their arms and legs. Cruz had a sense that he was going to die.
Anthony’s older sister had seen all this and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby, heard her. He quickly pulled over. He caught a nearby float (浮板), kicked off his shoes. and ran into the water, clearing his way through the ice with his free hand. “It was kind of a ‘Hulk smash’.” Lavin later joked.
Lavin made his way to pull the boys back to land. They were taken to the hospital immediately. The doctor said their five-minute stay in the water made their body temperature drop nearly ten degrees. Luckily, the boys got well soon. They admire their fearless neighbor just as Hulk, one of the Marvel Superheroes.

Hotpot is popular in China today. Did ancient Chinese people have hotpot?
Ancient Chinese people had hotpot as early as the Shang Dynasty. At that time, people boiled foods and soups in bronze cauldrons (青铜鼎). The cauldron had two parts — one was the pot to cook foods in soup, the other part was a layer (层) or a space inside the cauldron to hold firewood. But at that time, the cauldron was only for a single person to eat from.
During the Han Dynasty, people divided a pot into several parts to enjoy different taste.
During the Tang Dynasty, having hotpot was a popular thing. When people held family feasts (宴席), they would prepare hotpot. People of the Song Dynasty had hotpot to welcome winter.
Huoguo, the Chinese name for hotpot, was mentioned by Yuan Mei, a poet and foodie in the Qing Dynasty, in a book about all kinds of food. At that time, hotpot was very popular. People put all kinds of meats and vegetables into pots made of different materials, such as copper and iron.
Hotpot also became a famous royal (宫廷的) dish, called reguo. It’s said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved hotpot so much that he had it for almost every meal. He once held a big hotpot feast, inviting more than 5,000 people to enjoy about 1,550 hotpots.

I’m a rather smart person who has spent nearly 10 years learning mechanics(机械学), but I have no formal education. I have always struggled to make people trust me.
This year, I started another factory job, which provided a bit higher pay than my last one. I was making $13. 50 an hour at my last job and hardly make a living. I felt I would probably live a better life! My neighbor bought a used Harley motorcycle that everyone thought it had some serious damage. After taking a look at it, I said that I would be able to repair it. As a result, I saved them $2, 000 that they expected to pay to rebuild it. They were impressed with my work and told many of their friends about me. I got a lot of new business just through word of mouth.
In about two months I had over a dozen people coming to me for work and I was making great money. I was making thousands a month from part-time jobs on a good month. But because of the instability of the work, it was not certain for me to get enough money every month, I still couldn’t leave my day job at that point.
Then I got a job through one of my customers working on heavy equipment and diesel trucks (柴油汽 车). I was able to impress them by solving difficult problems quickly. They offered me another job that started even higher - $17 an hour. I finally made some progress.
In one year’s time I went from being the lowest level worker to having bosses ask me to work for them. Now I can honestly say I feel truly proud of myself and my skills.
