A group of high school students from the United States has planted hope by cleaning up an empty lot (一块地) in their neighborhood.
The students are from Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio. The empty lot, which is owned by a local bank, was filled with grass and poison ivy (毒葛). As a project for the school’s biohealth (生物健康) class, eight students decided to turn the lot into a space that will improve the mental (心理的) and emotional (情绪的) health of the people who live near it.

Now when you walk into the lot, you can see a wood walkway leading to a purple iron bench. A few beautiful plants are already in the ground. There is also a hopscotch (跳房子游戏) board that is painted bright blue. A wall painting with the words “Love” and “Peace” has taken shape on a back fence, dotted (点缀) with the students’ handprints. The rest of the fence (栅栏) was painted gray to cover plain wood.
The students said they painted the bench purple because they found that purple has a comforting effect on people. They thought kids could go there and sit together, socialize (交际) and stay out of trouble.
As for the hopscotch board, it was set up for a group of eight to 10 school-age kids who lived in the neighborhood but had nowhere to play.

In our busy society where food is readily available (可以得到的) from delivery services and fast food restaurants, almost one in three American adults is now considered to be obese.
Childhood obesity (肥胖) is also at an all-time high.
Obesity means being very overweight. If you are obese (肥胖的), you have too much body-fat. Doctors define (定义) obesity as having a body mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, and overweight as having a bmi of 25 to 30.
If you eat more food than your body can use, this will make you put on weight. Food that your body does not need as energy will be stored as fat by your body.

The chances of you being obese are greater if your parents are obese.
There are many psychological factors that cause people to eat too much. People who are stressed, unhappy or bored will often eat to make themselves feel better. This is known as comfort eating
Age is another factor, as you tend to be less active when you get older. The amount muscle (肌肉) in your body usually decreases as you get older and this causes the metabolism (新陈代谢) to slow down. as a result of these changes, you need to eat less, and if you do not eat less as you grow older, you will put on weight.
Obesity can cause many health disorders such as high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病), heart problems, cancer and many other serious medical conditions.

The speed, danger and excitement of motor racing have been with us for more than a century. For over a hundred years, drivers have pushed their machines to the limit. Everyone in motor racing has a simple dream: to go faster!
In the early days a small number of people raced each other driving unsafe machine on ordinary roads. Today, motor racing is a huge moneymaking industry. Thousands of people are involved. Drivers, mechanics, designers, engineers and technicians (技术员) work hard in the search for extra speed.
Cars race along twisting (弯曲的) roads or on round tracks. They race across ice and snow, as well as sandy deserts. Mud, dust, grass and steep (陡峭的) hills are all part of today’s range (赛场) of racing events. Hundreds of thousands of people turn up to watch races. Millions more people watch the events on television. Top drivers are celebrities and make huge amounts of money.

Ferrari prides itself on building the whole machine- the body as well as the engine. Some companies, such as Honda, only make engines for Formula 1 racing.
Motor racing is expensive. Racing teams need huge amounts of money to keep their cars on the racetrack. Sponsorship (赞助) is an important way of making money for racing teams. The logos (标志) of the sponsors (赞助者) are all over racing cars. The bigger the logo, the more the company will have to pay to the racing team.

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again.Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautlius had surfaced.I would go out and see the sunrise. Then I received a note from Captain Nemo.He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island.Ned was excited. He thought there he could find chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island.“I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the captain.“But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Cinseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men.We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it, and we were in the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us.Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colors of the shells, fish.and seaweed.Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area.We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later we were a hundred meters under the water. The suits worked very well, and it was easy to walk and breathe.
At one hundred meters deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical. We could not stop looking at them.Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.Small shrubs grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest.I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we walked further.

(2018·江苏无锡·校联考一模)What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say, "I wish I could help you but I'm short of money myself." In fact you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?
Professor Gerald Gullion of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a "white lie", such as a woman at a party telling another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liars hopes to profit or gain in some way.
Research has also been done into the changes of people’s behavior in a number of small, clearly unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒).
Another gesture which gives away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man Watching calls “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood, as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.
Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.
37.According to the passage, a “white lie” seems to be a lie _______.
A.that other people believe B.that other people don’t believe
C.told in order not to hurt someone’s feeling D.told in order to take advantage of someone
    38.Research suggests that women _______.
A.are better at telling lies than men do B.generally lie far more than men do
C.often make promises they intend to break D.lie at parties more often than men do
    39.The writer of the passage
A.hates lying B.enjoys lying C.often tells a lie D.tries to study about lying
40.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a sign of lying?
    A.Touching one’s love B.Rubbing the nose
    C.Moving in a chair D.Covering the mouth

Imagine this situation: You go out to your backyard, and you see a bear smelling your rubbish bin. Or you go into your garage to get your bike and find a bear there. What should you do?

It was one o'clock in the morning when I at last succeeded in creating life.
As I looked at the lifeless human being, I saw one eye slowly open. Then he began  to  breathe  and  move  his  arms.  At  first,  I  thought  he  would  be  a fine﹣looking man. He had yellow skin, black hair and very white teeth. Unluckily, his eyes were watery, and his lips were thin and colorless. I soon realized that there was nothing beautiful about him. I ran out of the room, disgusted (恶心) bythe creature I had created.
I tried to sleep, but for hours I could not. Then, when I did get to sleep, I had bad dreams. When I awoke the next morning, I did not want to return to my laboratory and the monster I had created. I went for a long walk until I came to an inn. There, to my pleasure and surprise, I found my friend, Henry Clerval. "Tell me about my family," I asked him. "And Elizabeth, How is she?"
"They are all well, Frankenstein," he said. "But you do not look well, my friend. Your eyes look as if you have not slept for many weeks."
I knew this was true. "I have been so busy," I explained, "that I have been working without rest."
Henry walked back with me to my department. I did not want him to, but I could not stop him. I was afraid that the creature I had left there might be alive and walking about. The creature had gone. I was so overcome by the feeling that I  fainted I was ill for many months.
During my illness, Henry was my only nurse. He heard me talking in my sleep about a monster. At first, he thought I was just having a bad dream, but then he realized that something very bad happened in my life. At last, I began to get better.

I held my breath, hoping Mrs. Parmele wouldn't notice the empty desk next to mine. She did, and pointed him in that direction. He looked over at me as he sat down, but I looked away.
By the end of his first week, John was at the bottom of our class's stair. I told my mother one evening at dinner. "He hardly even knows how to count."
As I ate lunch with him the next day and listened to him, however, I realized that it is pleasant to be with him. After lunch, I decided that I would be John's friend.
One night, as Mother came into my bedroom, I said, "Mom, tomorrow is John's birthday, and he's not going to get anything. Nobody even cares."
"Don't worry," Mom said as she kissed me goodnight. "I'm sure everything will be fine." I wished John a happy birthday in the morning, and his smile showed me that he was glad I had remembered.
By mid-afternoon I had almost decided that birthdays weren't that important. Then, as Mrs. Parmele was writing on the blackboard, I heard a familiar (熟悉的) voice singing the birthday song.
Moments later, Mother came through the door with a tray (托盘) of cakes. She was also taking a present in her hand.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track (追踪) your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.
The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. "It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis," says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. "We try to make it smart but also fun," Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said "yes," but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U.S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
66.Which is one of the feature of the Kolibree toothbrush?

(2019·江苏淮安·校联考一模)27 world records were broken during the 2016 Summer Olympics. They fell in swimming, running, weightlifting and a number of other sports. But how do athletes continue to get better, jump longer, run or swim faster? Although scientists say that athletes have reached their limits, records continue to fall. In almost every sport athletes have become better since the Olympic games began.
One reason is that more and more people than ever before have access to sports and exercise. They start at a younger age and can compete longer in their sport. In schools more and more natural talents can be discovered.
Besides, athletes can train full-time instead of training after work. As medicine improves, athletes can stay in competition for a longer time and overcome injuries(损伤) faster. Many top athletes achieve their best results later on in their careers. Technology has also helped improve scores.
One of the most important reasons, however, is the human mind. We always want to be better and faster than someone else. It can release(释放) great power in our body.
So where are the limits? One of the most difficult questions to answer is how fast a human being can run. Many years ago, nobody thought a person could even run under 10 seconds in the 100-meter race. But the record was broken at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.  At the moment Usain Bolt is the fastest man on Earth at 9.58 seconds. During the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, athletes from all over the world broke both personal and Olympic records. High-tech elements have been giving “wings” to these hard-working athletes, helping them become “faster, higher, stronger, together”.
The National Speed Skating Oval (the Ice Ribbon) saw 12 new Olympic records and one world record, including Chinese speed skater Gao Tingyu’s Olympic record of 34.32 seconds in the men’s 500 meters.
Known as “the fastest ice”, the 12,000-square-meter rink has received very good feedback (反馈) from the athletes. “It makes everyone skate faster,” Gao Tingyu said after he bagged the gold.
The secret behind is a new carbon dioxide ice-making technology. Speed-skating requires a very flat ice surface. If the ice surface temperature doesn’t change much, the ice stays flatter. Flat ice is easier to skate on. Liquid carbon dioxide was put under the ice for the first time. It cooled the ice and kept the temperature changes on the surface within just half of one degree.
In events like freestyle skiing and ski jumping, the direction and speed of the wind could largely affect athletes’ performance. A research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a wind measuring system using AI technology. “Some events only last a few seconds, and the wind is changing all the time. This system allows athletes and coaches to ‘see’ wind directly through real-time data on their pads, and decide when and where to jump,” the team leader Shao Yun told Beijing Daily.
There are many more high-tech elements that boost athletic performance, including drag-reducing sportswear, smart beds that massage athletes, and robots that cook. All these helped keep China’s promise to hold an “athlete-centered” Olympics, said Zhao Weidong, the spokesperson of the Beijing organizing committee.
89.The underlined “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to _________________.
A.the record B.the ice rink C.the gold medal D.the temperature
90.The system from the Chinese Academy of Sciences helps athletes _________________.
A.measure wind more correctly B.control the speed of the wind
C.change the direction of the wind D.record their jumps in real time
91.What do we know from the words of Zhao Weidong?
A.Other countries look at China with new eyes.
B.The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics were the best ever.
    C.The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics were athlete-centered.
D.China is expected to hold another Winter Olympics soon.

(2022·江苏盐城·统考一模)The World Consumer (消费者) Rights Day is on March 15. The 3.15 Gala, a yearly show produced by China Central Television pay attention to the protection of consumers’ rights. The gala exposes (揭露) cases which do anything against the consumer rights in various fields.
This year’s 3.15 gala exposed the inside story of the production of pickled (腌制的) cabbage (白菜).
Awful! The Hunan Chaqi Vegetable Limited Company produces plenty of pickled cabbage these years. But they have a terrible hygiene (卫生) problem.
The gala this year also exposed some live-streaming (直播) shows. They spread much false information or sell shoddy (劣质的) goods instead of genuine ones.
The gala told the public that there was an online jewellery store called Chengze, which invited jade suppliers to its live-streaming show who then promised buyers a lower price. However, the gala showed a secret interview with a Chengze worker who said that the jade suppliers were actually actors. He also said that the jewellery during the live programmes was genuine and valuable, but the jewellery that Chengze posted to consumers was shoddy.
In recent years, Internet safety is always a problem. This year, the 3.15 gala exposed a new kind of Internet safety case.
We sometimes need to download some softwares. If we see the “fast download” button on software download websites, we may click on it. In fact, it is often a trap. It does not lead to the software package that users want, but instead, to a “downloader” that plants unwanted software, or even malware (恶意软件), into users’ computers.
The gala took zol.com.cn as an example of such traps. On the software download page of the zol.com.cn website, a big green “fast download” button can be obviously seen. But clicking on the button will lead users to the malware trap. A member of a company that creates such traps told CCTV, “We may make 120 million yuan ($18.9 million) a year by planting extra softwares into users’ computers or mobile phones.”

    Ricky’s week started normally enough.
On Monday morning at breakfast time, while he was trying to read his computer game magazine, he had to listen to his sisters’ talk about boys.
“Steve is really good-looking,” said Jade.
“Good-looking? No, Hassa is good-looking...” said Sonia.
    “No way!”
“And Ryan,” said Sonia, “and Tyler and Sam.”
“Sam has lovely hair,” agreed Jade. “And Tyler wears cool clothes.”
“Yeah, and Ryan is a good dancer,” added Sonia.
“You should learn to dance, Ricky,” said Jade. “Then you might get a girlfriend.”
    Ricky blushed(脸红).
On Tuesday, Ricky spent the whole evening in his room working at his computer. He had his own website. On Tuesday his class always had maths homework and Ricky always helped out his schoolmates with their problems.
Ricky was always a bit of a hero on Wednesday. His friends went up to him and thanked him for his help with their homework.
“Hey, Ricky, you are brilliant.” said Josh.
“You are another Einstein!” said Alex.
Teachers liked Ricky, too, especially the maths and science ones. Whenever they asked questions, Ricky always seemed to know the answers.
Friday was a cold day. But everyone was happy as the weekend started.
Ricky turned up the collar(衣橱)of his jacket. It was only five o’clock, but it was already getting dark. He was walking home alone. It was strange. Ricky was popular with the boys in his class, but he wasn’t close friends with any of them.

China’s sportswear brands, like ANTA Sports, Li-Ning and XTEP, have reported big growth in recent years, said Xinhua. At the Beijing 2022 Games, more local brands and products got global attention. For example, Peak had the second-most delegations(代表团) wearing its products at the Beijing Winter Olympics. Delegations from seven countries including Iceland, Ukraine, Belgium and Romania wore Peak, reported the Paper.

Technology has done our world wonders: from development in medicine to our daily lives. It has undoubtedly changed the way our society works, and how we communicate with one another and ourselves. However, by welcoming technology as part of life, are we losing our ability to create?
Technology provides a new chance for creativity to exist(存在). Through technology, ideas can be set free and come to life. We have the necessary tools for greater possibilities and new solutions. For example, businesses now have the chance to improve themselves more creatively through websites, film advertisements, social media or radio.
However, when we look more closely, it’s easy to notice some disadvantages. For example, many of us depend so much on automated calculations(计算器) rather than taking the time to work it out for ourselves. Another situation is that a lot of people are spending too much time on screens. As a result, they are reducing the chances to come up with their own creations.
Is there a way to find a balance between technology and human creativity? I think so. It is simply a matter of making sure that creativity is not deterred by technology. The first way is to reduce our use of electronic products by setting limits on when, where, and how long we use them, turning off the notice on your phone. Once you become used to these, you will feel surprised how little you think about your phone.
Another wonderful way is to take daily walks in nature. It can help you refresh and keep going. In the long run, a daily walk can not only influence our creativity and imagination but further our physical and mental health. We can also develop our creativity by doing yoga, keeping a diary, or reading.
The actions you choose to take will help change the relationship between creativity and technology for the better. With the right balance, technology can be a good method of improving creativity.
111.Why does the writer ask the underlined question in the beginning?
A.To draw the reader’s attention to the topic. B.To show the writer likes technology.
C.To tell the reader the importance of technology. D.To prove creativity is more important.
    112.What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A.The importance of creativity.
    B.Good ways to develop technology.
C.The relationship between business and creativity.
D.The good influence that technology has on creativity.
113.The underlined word “deterred” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
    A.protected B.controlled C.attacked D.prevented
114.The structure of the passage may be ________.
    A. B. C. D.
115.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.limiting the use of our phones can help us develop creativity
B.turning off the notice on the phone will make people worried
C.spending time on screens is the easiest way to keep people happy
D.a daily walk does more good to physical health than to mental health

It’s hard to imagine that Dayme Delgado ever struggled (挣扎) in school. When the 18-year-old graduated from Mater Academy Charter High School in Miami, Florida, US, she already had a full scholarship (学问) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻理工学院). She plans to study math and aerospace (航空航天) engineering.
But when Dayme first started school, she felt frustrated (感到沮丧的) because she didn’t understand different subjects in English. As the daughter of two Cuban immigrants (移民), Dayme didn’t learn English until she got to kindergarten. The only thing that made sense to her was math. “Numbers are kind of their own language, so I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got this,’’’ she said.
Since her parents had poor English themselves, they weren’t able to help Dayme. So from an early age, she worked harder on her math skills instead. She has taken every math class at Mater academy and several at Miami Dade College.
Math came so naturally to Dayme that she usually didn’t have to take notes. She simply paid close attention and understood.
She has also encouraged other female (女性的) students to take math and science courses. She read research that shows girls are as interested in math and science as boys in elementary school. But when they get to high school, few girls see themselves pursuing (追求) careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
Dayme has founded a STEM group called SheSTEM. It works with local colleges to open after-school science courses for her peers and host events related to STEM.
“The most important thing is to realize that math is just like anything else,” Dayme said. “It is not dependent on your gender (性别) or your ethnicity (种族). Forget about what others think and just go for it.”

When I was not adding little things to my new home, I was busy learning about the animals and plants on the island, and about myself.
I discovered that the birds that lived in holes in the rocks were good to eat.
One day I found an old bag that I wanted to use to store things in. Some old corn fell out of this bag and made roots in the dirt. Soon green barley grew from the seeds. When I saw these plants, I cried. They reminded me of England. When I was young I wanted to leave England for a life of adventure at sea, but now that I was trapped alone. I only wanted to return.
One day, when I sitting by my little cave, I heard a terrible noise. The next moment much dirt came falling down the hill. There was so much of it that I was afraid it would swallow (吞没) me! I ran away and climbed over my fence using a ladder I had made. I realized that the island was being taken by a terrible earthquake.
The earthquake soon ended, but then a terrible storm began. The sea became black and violent (猛烈的) and full of huge waves that crashed onto the beach. Thunder roared and lightning hit the water. The storm lasted for three hours, but when it finished, it began to rain. This was not the gentle, calm rain of England, but a rain so hard and terrible that I had to cut a hole in my fence to let the water pour out. Otherwise, my house would have been drowned (淹没), and me with it!

(2019·江苏淮安·校联考一模)Is the world too crowded? Well, that's a hard question to answer. It's all a matter of perspective(视角). In Montana, you might drive for a mile in any direction and not see another human being. In Macao, 60,000 people live in every square mile!
What is true is that the world's population doesn't stay the same. It is increasing at a very fast rate(比例). That's in part because in each generation(代) there are more people who then have children than in the last generation.
Five hundred years ago, the population of the world was about 460 million. In 1900, the world's population was under 2 billion. Right now it is doubling every 40 years. That means, if this rate of growth continues, when you're a parent, there will be twice as many people on Earth as there are now. Wow! That's a whole lot of people! Now the world's population has reached 7 billion. Though there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on Earth equals(相当于) too many people. But everyone agrees that the more people there are, the more resources the world needs to feed, house and take care of all of them, and the more need there is to think carefully about how we live and use the Earth’s resources.

A black boy helped his father take care of barrels. Every morning he cleaned every barrel on the farm and then put them in order. He was angry because the wind blew the barrels here and there during the night.
The boy wrote a letter to the wind, “Please don’t blow down my barrels.” After seeing that, his father asked the boy, “Can the wind receive your letter?” The little boy said, “I don’t know, but I have no other choices.”
