Cities can be lovely and green homes for plants and animals. Many cities around the world want to make this come true. Let’s see how they do that!
Milan, Forest city
In the center of Milan, Italy, there are two tall buildings. Green plants cover them. They look like forests in the air. The “forests” have 800 trees, 15, 000 small plants and 5, 000 bushes. The area of these plants cover is the same as 30, 000 square meters of woodland. People plant them in big pots on large balconies. They attract 1, 600 kinds of birds and butterflies.
Cape Town, Cat city
Caracals (狞猫) live in Cape Town (开普敦) , South Africa. Cars cause 70 percent of their deaths. To save the big cats, people catch and mark cats. They also give the cats radio collars (电子项圈) . The collars tell people where the cats go. Then, people put signs at these places. Seeing the signs, cars can slow down and help take care of the cats.
Costa Rica, Sweet City
If bees could choose a place to live, they might want to live in Costa Rica (哥斯达黎加) . The city is doing its best to make bees feel at home. There, bees and other pollinators (传粉者) like butterflies, birds and bats are all seen as citizens. In the city, there’re flowers along every sidewalk so that bees and butterflies have food. Nowadays, we have kinds of technologies to protect us from different disasters. We even know where and when some disasters, like the typhoon, the flood. While most of the new technologies are far away from us, some around us can help people in disasters.
The drone (无人机) is one of them. It can be used to send food, water when a natural disaster happens. Very often the buildings are too dangerous for rescue (救援) teams to get in. They can make the drone fly into the buildings to search for those who are still alive first. They are also becoming a useful tool for firefighters, helping them find and fight wildfires. In some faraway places in the world, drones are the fastest way to send medicine to people who are in great need of it.
Social media is also a useful tool when it comes to natural disasters. With its help, people can know about the natural disasters before they hit. And some social media platforms allow people to mark themselves as safe after disasters, so others can know their situations.
Social media is also a place for up-to-date news, so people can learn what is going on in the disaster areas. Besides, many social media platforms allow people to donate money to help people in disaster areas. The money will help them get back to their normal life as soon as possible. Charlotte and Wilbur were alone. Wilbur lay resting after the excitement.
His medal still hung from his neck, by looking out of the corner of his eye he could see it.
“Charlotte.” said Wilbur after a while, “why are you so quiet?” “I like to sit still.” she said. “I’ve always been rather quiet.”
“Yes, but you seem special today. Do you feel all right?”
“A little tired, perhaps. But I feel peaceful. You will live and be safe, Wilbur. These auturnn days will shorten and grow cold. You will enjoy the beauty of the frozen world, winter will pass, and the ice will melt in the pond. All these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur—this lovely world...”
Charlotte stopped. A moment later tears came to Wilbur’s eye. “Oh, Charlotte,” he said. “To think that when I first met you I thought you were cruel and bloodthirsty!”
① He spoke again. “Why did you do all this for me?” he asked. “I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.”
“You have been my friend. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. We’re born, we live a little while, we die. A spider lives life with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to make my life meaningful.”

“Don’t be ridiculous (荒唐的) .” said Charlotte. “You can’t stay here.”
Wilbur was in a panic. He raced round and round the pen (猪圈) . Suddenly he thought of the five hundred little spiders that would hatch (孵化) in the spring. If Charlotte herself was unable to go home to the barn, at least he must take her children along.

My mother counted out the coins the Captain owed(欠)her. I picked up the papers wrapped in cloth. Then we heard a noise. It was the sound of the blind man’s stick-tap(轻敲), tap-tapping on the road outside the inn(小旅馆). It came nearer and nearer. Then it stopped. It started again, but this time it was moving away.
“He may not be able to see us,” I said, “but soon other men will come and find us. Black Dog perhaps. Or the man with one leg.”
“It’s only seven o’clock,” my mother said. “I haven’t finished counting my money.”
“There’s no time, Mother,” I said. “We must go before the men come.”
As we left the inn, I heard the sound of running feet. “They’re coming, Mother,” I said. “Run quickly.”
“I can’t, Jim,” my mother said. “I feel ill.”
There was a bridge just outside the inn. I pulled my mother under the bridge. We waited there as the men came nearer. There were seven or eight of them. Blind Pew was one of the men. The night was dark by now, but one of the men had a light.
“Break down the door,” he said.

Another man shouted, “The chest(大箱子)is open. Someone’s opened it. But there are coins inside.”
“We don’t want the coins,” the blind man shouted. “Where’s Captain Flint’s map?”

(2022·江苏淮安·统考一模)Do you still remember the lesson from China’s Tiangong space station last year? On March 23, astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu gave another one! It was live—streamed(直播)worldwide. What fun experiments(实验)did they do this time?
A bridge of water
How do you build a “bridge” with water? It’s hard to do it on Earth. But in the space station, with little gravity, it’s quite easy!
In the lesson, Wang Yaping first made two water balls on two plates, then let them touch each other. Next, Wang pulled the two plates away, and the water between them didn’t break. It became a “bridge”! This is because the surface tension(张力)of water is not disturbed(干扰)by gravity in space. The surface tension keeps the “skin” of the water strong so that the bridge doesn’t break.
Separate water and oil
If we mix oil and water in a bottle on Earth, we can separate them quickly because they have different densities(密度). Gravity brings the water down while the oil stays on top. However, if you do this in the space station, with no gravity, oil and water will mix together.
How can we separate them, then? In the lesson, Ye Guangfu rotated(旋转)the bottle to create centrifugal force(离心力). With this man—made gravity, the heavier water and the lighter oil are separated.
28.We can build a “bridge” with water easily because of ________ in space.
A.the surface of water B.the strong “skin” of water
C.little gravity D.much gravity
29.If we mix oil and water in a bottle in the space station, ________.
A.they will be separated B.they will mix together
C.the oil will go down D.the water will stay on the top
30.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The astronauts only gave one lesson from the space station.
B.The two experiments were live—streamed in China.
C.We can build a “bridge” with water on Earth easily.
D.On Earth, oil and water can be separated soon in a bottle.
(2022·江苏南通·统考一模)Modern organic(有机的)farming was developed as a response to the environmental harm caused by the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers(化肥)in conventional agriculture, and it has plenty of ecological benefits(生态效益). In other words, the idea behind organic farming is to use no chemicals. Farmers must use natural methods to make plants grow strong and protect them from insects. It is believed that without chemicals, these plants will make better food for humans. But the idea is bigger than that. Organic farming respects all plants and animals in the environment. This kind of farming should improve nature’s health.
Fertilizers are chemicals that give plants strength. If a farmer grows the same plant over and over in the same place, the soil will lose its ability to feed the plant. The farmer must add fertilize to help the soil. Organic farmers do not add fertilizer. They will rotate crops(轮作谷物)or use animal manure and plant compost(堆肥)to make the soil rich again. Compost is made from plant material that has broken down into soil. It has all the food a plant needs to grow.
Pesticides are also avoided. These are chemicals that kill pests like bad insects or animals. Organic farmers have other ways to deal with pests because pesticides kill good animals and insects that protect the plants. Foxes and snakes eat the mice. Some insects like ladybirds eat the bad insects. And of course, there are weeds(杂草). These are the plants that farmers do not want because they steal growing space from the good plants. To stop weeds, organic farmers can scrape(刮除)the soil several times. Eventually, the weeds will die.
Organic farming usually needs a lot of human labour to do the job of chemicals. This is one reason that organic food costs more. But when we think about the health of the earth, its plants, and its animals, perhaps it is worth it. In the end, a healthy planet means that we will be healthy as well.
31.From the passage we know that organic food may be ________ than inorganic food.
A.tastier B.cheaper C.more expensive D.more beautiful
32.The meaning of the underlined word “pesticides” in Paragraph l is ________.
A.a chemical used to kill insects
B.something to make soil rich again
C.the waste matter from animals
D.some materials to make plants grow
33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Organic farming can make us and our earth healthy.
B.Plants with chemicals make better food for humans.
C.Soil needs all kinds of fertilizers to keep plants growing.
D.It’s wise to grow the same plant again in the same place.
(2022·江苏南通·统考一模)Think about what is happening in many families: kids come home, throw away their schoolbags, jump onto the sofa, get lost in the world of the small screen and become couch potatoes. Kids are crazy about screens and games, suffer from shortsightedness and become lazy thinkers. Now, parents need to take responsibility for family education to help shape the future for their children.
On Jan l, the Law on Family Education Promotion(《家庭教育促进法》)), the first of its kind in China, came into effect. It was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on Oct 23, 2021. The law says that parents or other guardians of minors(未成年人的监护人)should be responsible for family education. They are encouraged to educate their children properly-- morally(道德上), physically and psychologically(心理上).
According to the law, parents and guardians mustn’t place too much pressure(压力)on their children. Parents and guardians should carefully organize time for minors to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure minors don’t become addicted to the Internet,
The law also says that parents or other guardians should not use violence(暴力) to control their children. They should not discriminate(歧视)against youth according to their gender or physical condition. For example, some parents might value boys more than girls or discriminate against disabled children.
The law also gives special mention to stay-at-home children in the countryside. They may be left alone while their parents go to work in cities. It asks local governments to keep a close eye on such families, and help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be responsible for their children’s education.
"Family education is very important for the future of the country, " says Sun Hongyan, head of youth and children research at the China Youth and Children Research Center. "Now, with the introduction of the new law, family education is no longer just a family matter but a state affair (事务). "
When parents fail to educate their children properly, they might be breaking the law. Although punishment and detention(拘留)for parents were dropped from the final version of the law, they will be given a warning.

(2022·江苏南通·统考一模)In China the Youth Community Volunteer Award is an only project that has planted the seeds (种子) of public service in the minds of many young people over the past six years. Their thoughts and actions not only represent the positive changes which China has brought to the global community, but will also encourage the younger men to contribute to China’s continuable development in the future.

Some take these boys to basketball games or on fishing trips. Others help the manager to clean, tidy up toys and rooms.
In most cities there are a number of clubs where boys and girls are taught to play games or to make crafts (手工艺品). Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, beaches, museums and other places of interest. Most of these clubs have students as volunteers.

They got some bread and meat, some string, some bags, and some candles. They borrowed a boat from somebody who wasn’t around. Then they went down the river to the hole where Tom had got out of the caves. The hole was covered in bushes, but Tom remembered exactly where it was.
“It’s a great hiding place,” said Hucklebery.
They went into the caves. Tom was soon back at the spring where he had stayed. Then he and Huckleberry went to where he had seen Injun Joe. He held up his candle, and they saw a big cross on the wall.
“Number two, under the cross!” said Tom. “That’s what he said.”
Huckleberry was afraid. “Tom, let’s get out. What if Injun Joe’s ghost comes?”
“No, ghosts don’t want money! Anyway, Injun Joe died five miles from here. It’s too far.” Huckleberry agreed. They got to the cross and began to look under it. It didn’t take long for them to find the wooden box with the money. It was very heavy. They couldn’t hoist it. They took the money out of the box and put it into the bags. The bags were easier to carry. They got out of the caves and went back into the boat.
“Haha, we are rich now.” Huckleberry laughed. “I can buy delicious food, new clothes and even anything I want. I won’t go to school any more.”
Soon they were back in St. Petersburg. When the Welshman saw them come back safely, he hugged them and made them go to Widow Douglas’s house. There were many people there. (2022·江苏·统考一模)My husband and I both grew up playing sports. So our little daughter, Kennedi showed early athletic promise. She could easily outrun other kids, while playing with them on the playground.
By the time Kennedi started primary school, we signed her up for track (径赛) training. Slowly but surely, track training took over our lives. We gave up taking vacations so our girl wouldn’t miss any practices. I even stopped Kennedi from swimming with her friends, for I thought she would waste the energy needed for competition. We didn't ask Kennedi if that was what she wanted. Of course she did! she kept winning, and every kid liked to win.
When Kennedi was 13 years old, at a national sports event, she suddenly fell down and ended up lying on the track, crying in pain. A doctor said, “She worked out too hard that her knee was hurt. She might not run as fast as before.” The doctor kept talking, but I had a hard time following the words. My feelings were mixed. Was I too strict with my daughter? Was I party to blame (责备) for her injury (受伤)? Then I realized that my kid needed a mom more than a coach.
To our relief (安慰), after a year-long’s strict medical examination, Kennedi almost recovered. She even joined the volleyball team at her high school. And we were gradually back to a busy family schedule. But not everything is the same. We seldom miss vacations any more, even if that means missing practice. (2022·江苏苏州·统考一模)Dr. Jane Goodall is one of the most famous primatologists (灵长类动物学家) in the world. Her love of animals and Africa began when she was little. At 26, Goodall travelled by boat to Tanzania, in Africa. While she was there, she made one of the greatest discoveries in the animal world.
During her time in the Tanzanian jungle (丛林), Goodall used a method different from that of other primatologists. Instead of numbering the chimpanzees (黑猩猩) she was studying, she gave them names and began to earn their trust, creating a connection and then being accepted by the animals as a member of the group. Not only did Goodall prove the idea that chimpanzees are vegetarians wrong—she saw them eating meat in 1961—but she also found that it’s not only humans who make and use tools. Gooddall watched as two chimps, named David Greybeard and Goliath, used sticks to fish for insects. She strongly believed, and finally proved, that chimpanzees have feelings and personalities—just like we do.
In 1977, she set up the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation. It’s a charity that works to protect chimpanzees. In 1991, Goodall and 16 Tanzanian students set up Roots & Shoots, which she describes as a “programme for young people in which they decide on projects to improve the world for people, animals and the environment.” Tens of thousands of young people across nearly 100 countries have been part of Roots & Shoots.

Participation in the Paralympics is at an all-time high at the Tokyo games. But they are relatively new to most people.
As early as 1888, some deaf athletes created their own sports clubs in Berlin, Germany. In 1948, on the same day as the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games in London, Guttmann organized the first contest for disabled athletes, which he named the International Wheelchair Games. Sixteen people in wheelchairs competed in archery (射箭) during the games. Then the games became an annual event. And in 1952, the Netherlands sent a team, making the competition international.
In 1960, the games officially became the Paralympic Games. That year, more than 400 athletes with disabilities from 23 countries got together at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. They competed in archery, basketball, swimming and other events. Since then, the Paralympics have been held at once after the Olympics in the same host city. (2022·江苏南通·统考一模)Peer pressure(同伴压力)is the direct influence on people by those of the same age, or when someone is encouraged to follow the peers by changing his own thoughts, values or behaviors to be accepted by the influencing person or group. Peer pressure can be seen throughout the society and most people would have been influenced. In some ways, it has positive(积极的)effects on us and produces good results. However, peer pressure can also bring some negative(消极的)influence on one’s life. For example, when someone dislikes a special idea, habit or lifestyle, his peers may force him to do something against his will. Nowadays, peer pressure has caused many teenagers to form some bad habits, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, and even taking drugs. These habits may lead to life-long problems. It is commonly believed that teenagers are easier to be changed by negative peer pressure, because they just wish to be accepted or popular in a group.
When following others, some teenagers may lose their own identity(身份). In order to follow the lifestyle of others, these teens no longer have the ability to develop their own identity and are forced to behave like sheep in a group. As a result, they will develop a low self-respect and can’t form their own personality.
In spite of the fact that peer pressure can be harmful, it can also produce some advantages, as it often encourages teens to learn something good from others. Some youths are not so active and need a push in the right direction. In times like these, they would thank the friends who help them do the right things. For example, students can join a study group before exams. It will make them feel less stressed and they can also receive good feedback from others.
Positive peer pressure can also help one to think about one’s actions. For example, when a hockey player realizes that his team players are practising hard to become better players, he will also devote his time to improving his performance in order to become a more valuable player like others.
Peer pressure has both negative and positive effects. One should choose his friends wisely and stay with people who help him grow healthily. He may often be encouraged to pick up healthy habits that would bring about good changes in life. All in all, positive peer pressure has the power to change a person completely and can actually drive him to reach for the stars.

The nursing home was just near where I lived. I went there from Monday to Friday, I started at 9:00 a.m. and finished at 4:00 p.m. I really enjoyed my voluntary work. I often chatted with these elderly people and this made them feel happy. And they had so much knowledge and experience to share with me.
There I really learned a lot from them. And I got along well with them, especially Helen. She was lovely and she had ever been a good history teacher. She missed her husband and talked about him a lot. He died six months ago and she felt lonely without him. He was a pilot in the air force in World War Ⅱ. She told me how difficult it was during the war when they had food rationing (配给). There was no chocolate! And no bananas!
Sometimes Helen reminded me of my grandmother. I also talked about my grandmother with her. My grandmother died six months ago and I missed her. She was my best friend. She helped and encouraged me. I nearly gave up studying when I was 16 because I did not get good GCSE grades, but she persuaded (劝服) me to get GCSEs again. She was so pleased when I passed my A-levels.
Helen couldn’t believe how the world had changed during her life. I told her I taught my grandmother to use the Internet and that she loved shopping on the Internet. “If you like, I will teach you how to use the Internet.” I told Helen. She said to me, “I will learn to use the Internet. And I like online shopping very much.”
Old people need our love and care, sometimes, you just need to sit quietly to be a listener. It doesn’t cost anything at all, but it’s the most precious (珍贵的) thing in the world.

(2022·江苏盐城·统考一模)Everyone can join the fight against COVID-19. Not sure what we should do? Here is some advice.
◆Stay away from the crowds and keep healthy
Don’t go to crowded places. If we have to, remember to wear a mask. Stay at least one meter away from others. COVID-19 can spread through mucus droplets (飞沫) . The droplets can fly one or two meters in the air before falling to the ground. We should reduce going out and persuade (劝说) relatives and friends not to have dinner together. When we stay indoors, open windows to let fresh air in. Do it three times a day for fifteen minutes to half an hour each time.
◆Wash hands more often
Remember to wash our hands before eating, after going to the bathroom, coming into contact with rubbish and touching animals. Don’t touch our eyes, nose and or mouth before washing hands. When we wash our hands, use running water and soap.
◆Choose proper masks
Wearing masks is a good way of stopping the virus from entering our mouth and nose. If we don’t wear a mask, we can get sick easily. And sick people should wear masks to make sure they won’t give the virus to others. But we must choose proper ones. Medical masks and N95 masks are the best choices. “N95”means the mask stops at least 95 percent of very tiny particles (分子).

Sam Draper, “The Bookman”, has the dream job for bookworms. He spends his time choosing books for people, matching their personalities with books. “I had been job-hunting for 6 months,” explains Sam. “I’m good at picking books for people and I love books. So I thought why not give it a try?”
How can Sam choose a book for somebody else? His service is offered over the phone or through an email, so the customers needn’t show their names. He is meeting strangers, so he needs to get to know the person a bit. He studies them and finds out what writers they’ve read—so he can avoid those—and what other books they might be interested in. In this way, people can receive books that are chosen just for them.
During the lockdown (疫情封锁), he offered free books to over 70 people who were staying at home and couldn’t go out. Sam wanted to do something that might make these people feel better and happier. By the end of that first lockdown, he’d given out 350 books. “I got a lot back from it myself—lots of thank-you cards and letters from people who were on their own and loved the company of a book.” Sam said.

(2022·江苏淮安·统考一模)As teenagers, we grow quickly. In just one or two years, a well-fitting set of uniforms may become too small for us. Many of our old uniforms, when we go to throw them away, are still actually (实际上) wearable. This is a big waste. If there is a program for us to share our old uniforms, we can cut down on (减少) that waste. This is very good for the environment. With a uniform sharing program, we can also save lots of money.
Some parents in Hangzhou have put this idea into practice. They have set up an online uniform sharing platform (平台). But I think we still need to solve a few problems before we start to set up more platforms like this. Firstly, not all old uniforms are suitable to be shared. Clothes like coats and sweaters can be easily cleaned up and shared. But in my opinion, I don’t support the idea of sharing summer clothes such as T-shirts. There should be a criterion (标准) for the types of clothes that can be shared. Secondly, students should be allowed to decide for themselves whether they wish to share or accept old uniforms. Perhaps we will form a uniform committee (委员会). Students who need old uniforms can post a message, and those who have suitable uniforms to share can contact them directly.
